Abstract:A meshless method for predicting cavity noise is developed by using the discrete vortex method and the vortex theory.Firstly, the discrete vortex sound method is used to calculate the flow field of the cavity under uniform grazing flow, and the key parameters such as the strength, position and velocity of the point vortices are obtained.Then, based on vortex sound theory, the sound pressure of point vortex in the free space is obtained, and the time-domain boundary element method is introduced to simulate the scattering effect of the cavity surface.In the end, the spectrum of the sound pressure is analysed.This meshless method has high computational efficiency, and can obtain the key characteristics of the flow field and sound field simultaneously.It can improve the basic understanding of the vortex sound mechanism of cavity noise.At the same time, it provides a reliable model method with satisfactory efficiency, which can be readily extended to the corresponding engineering applications.

Abstract:The flow past an in-line forced oscillating square cylinder at Reynolds number of 200 is studied using an in-house code, named constrained interpolation profile method developed in Zhejiang University (CIP-ZJU). The model is established in the Cartesian coordinate system using the CIP method to discretise the Navier-Stokes equations. The 'fluid-structure interaction is treated as a multiphase flow of the liquid and solid phases to be solved simultaneously. An immersed boundary method is used to deal with the boundary of the solid body. The CFD model is first applied to the computation of the flow past a fixed square cylinder for its validation. Computations are then performed for the flow past a square cylinder oscillating in the streamwise direction. Considerable attention is paid to the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes of the vortex shedding in the oscillating square cylinder wake. Various oscillation amplitudes and frequencies are simulated and their effects on the vortex shedding modes are analyzed via Lissajous patterns of the unsteady lift coefficient. The relationship among the lift coefficient, the drag coefficient and the lock-on range is also investigated quantitatively.

Abstract:To study the fluid-resonant acoustic oscillation phenomenon induced by the mean flow in a cross-junction deep cavity,the Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) is applied.The result indicates that the dynamic Smagorinsky-Lilly model and the wall-adapted local eddy-viscosity model both can predict the changing rule of oscillation frequency and pressure amplitude.But the latter gives smaller Reynolds stress.It is shown that a standing wave acoustic field forms in the branch tube,and the hydrodynamic mode and acoustic mode change with the mean flow velocity.On this basis,the mechanism of the fluid-resonant oscillation induced by the mean flow is revealed,showing that vortex shedding at the upstream edge of cavity and vortex movement locus are significantly influenced by the acoustic field.On the other hand,vortex structures transfer energy into the acoustic field as they move along the opening of the cavity,thus accomplishing the coupling between the mean flow and the acoustic field.

Abstract:In this paper, the volume of fluid (VOF) model in conjunction with continuum surface force (CSF) model is applied to numerically investigate the single bubble formation process in the bubble columns. Meanwhile, the hybrid method (large-eddy simulation (LES) and acoustic analogy method) is used for bubble acoustic prediction. Experimental results provide a reliable validation of the numerical results. Adaptive filtering technique and time-frequency analyses are adapted for the numerical acoustic data at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s. The spectrum and spectrogram approaches indicate that the numerical acoustic data covers two principal frequency components, in which, one is the bubble generation rate and the other is the natural frequency of volumetric bubble oscillation. By combining the studies of flow field and acoustic signals, volumetric bubble oscillation is found to be excited by an axial water jet up into the bubble, immediately following the bubble detachment. The results of this study lead to the proposition that numerical simulation method could be applied to well understanding of the physics behind the passive acoustic emission. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this paper a semi-analytical solution is proposed for modelling vibrations from a twin tunnel in a saturated poroelastic half-space. The twin tunnels are simulated as two hollow cylinders made of a viscoelastic material. The half-space containing the two circular cavities is described as a two-phase poroelastic material. The wave field in the half-space with two cylindrical cavities is taken as the combination of down-going plane waves from the ground surface and outgoing cylindrical waves from each tunnel. With the help of transformation and translation properties of the plane and cylindrical waves the boundary condition at each scattering surface can be expressed with the appropriate coordinates. Numerical results suggest that the reflection effect of the ground surface has limited influence on the response of the tunnels, but has a greater influence on the free-field response near the surface. Compared with the single tunnel solution, the wave field above the twin tunnels is greatly distorted.

Abstract:Tip vortex cavitation often occurs on ship propeller. This type of cavitation can cause significant noise compared to the wet flow. Aiming at predicting the inception of tip vortex cavitation, numerous researchers have investigated the detailed flow field around the tip. According to informed studies, the inception of tip vortex cavitation is affected by complicated factors, such as the minimum pressure in the vortex core, the turbulence fluctuation and the water quality. To understand the effect of water quality on cavitation inception, the motion of nuclei in the vortex flow is investigated. The vortex flow is given by the Ranking vortex model. The one-way coupled point-particle-tracking model (PTM) is employed to simulate the trajectory of nuclei. Meanwhile, the theoretical solution of motion of nuclei is obtained and compared to the numerical results.

Abstract:Acoustic resonance induced by vortex shedding from a flat plate in a flow duct has been widely concerned in a variety of engineering applications. However, the unsteady vortex sound interaction is still an open issue. A nonlinear physical model is established based on three meshless sub-models, including the discrete vortex method (DVM) for vortex shedding, the vortex sound theory for sound radiation and the time-domain boundary element method (TDBEM) for sound propagation within the duct. Then, the feedback effect of sound wave is considered by adding acoustic particle velocity onto the potential flow of vortex shedding, which makes the coupling process bidirectional. Both the flow field, sound field and their unsteady interaction are obtained simultaneously. The predicted resonant frequency and amplitude results are in accordance with the previous experiment data, especially, the lock-in phenomenon is reasonably captured. By comparing the numerical results with and without acoustic feedback, it reveals that the feedback sound plays a significant role in the onset of lock-in phenomenon, including enhancing the strength and modulating the frequency of vortex shedding. It helps to get a more detailed insight into the underlying physical process of vortex sound interaction for studying control strategy.

Abstract:Flow field of a circular cylinder oscillating in a uniform flow or in a wake was investigated using currently modified virtual boundary method. Results of a single cylinder show reasonable agreements with experiments. The forced system of two cylinders with small spacing is studied and fancy flow characteristics are observed. Vortex switch and change of vortex modes are well observed. Vorticity bands are formed and disappeared with increasing the excitation frequencies. In the case of large spacing, the upstream cylinder sheds vortex as no downstream one oscillating in the wake. No distinct lock-on response is found for the downstream cylinder.

Abstract:The detachment of bubbles from an underwater nozzle inevitably generates distinct acoustic signals. This work proposes numerical simulation models to investigate the effect of different nozzle wall configurations on bubble formation and acoustic characteristics. A combination of large eddy simulation (LES) model and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) equation is successfully applied to predict bubble acoustic pressures. The adaptive filtering techniques of signal processing are utilized in bubble acoustic analyses. In particular, transient spectrum based on time–frequency analyses can not only precisely count the bubbling period but also effectively measure the bubble sizes. The numerical results for bubble size are in good agreement with the theoretical data (less than 10% deviation). The main results of this research show that the structure of the nozzle wall plays a guiding role in vortex motion around bubbles. The bubble size also increases with the increase in exit-lip thickness, whereas the bubbling rate decreases.
Spinning behavior of flow-acoustic resonant fields inside a cavity: Vortex-shedding modes and diametral acoustic modes

Abstract:The spinning behavior of flow-acoustic resonant fields inside an axisymmetric cavity configuration was numerically investigated in four flow conditions containing different resonances between vortex-shedding modes and diametral acoustic modes. Zonal large-eddy simulations (ZLESs) were conducted to determine the aeroacoustic and aerodynamic fields simultaneously. In the ZLESs, a shear stress transport turbulence model was used to model the relatively steady flow field inside the inlet and outlet sections. Simultaneously, the wall-modeled LES formulation was used in the cavity section to resolve the highly complex flow-acoustic resonant fields. The ZLES results were well validated by the experimental results in the literature in terms of the frequency, amplitude, and spatial features of the acoustic pressure pulsations. Subsequently, the spinning behavior and mechanism of the excited diametral acoustic modes and the resonant vortex-shedding modes were comprehensively illustrated. The results showed that the excited diametral acoustic mode span anticlockwise along the cavity circumference, resulting in intense acoustic-pressure fluctuations several times greater than at the inlet dynamic-pressure head, together with longitudinal pressure propagations. Using proper orthogonal decomposition analysis, the spinning mechanism was found to be closely related to the interaction between the α-mode and the β-mode, which had fixed temporal and spatial phase lags. Thereafter, the first vortex-shedding mode gave rise to a strong spinning motion of the resonant flow field, while the second vortex-shedding mode created a slight spinning motion. The corresponding phase-dependent flow fields at consecutive planes along the cavity circumference revealed the spatiotemporal evolution of the velocity variations, surface streamlines, and vorticity variations of the shedding vortices. Large-scale helical vortex tubes were formed within the cavity volume due to the strong spinning behavior.

Abstract:In order to research the motion and evolution of a single bubble and two horizontally arranged bubbles in quiescent viscous liquid due to buoyancy, the VOF (volume of fluid) method was applied to track the interface, in which surface tension was taken into consideration. The two phase flow fields at different times coupled with principles of its wake velocity were studied. Afterwards, simulation results were made comparisons with the images taken in an experiment previously. It was indicated that the bottom of the bubble kept dimpling inwards, finally burst and diffused in water. Vortexes were clearly seen in the wake region. The two bubbles rose in a wobbly path, and didn't coalesce in the end. Results showed the good agreement between experiments and simulations. Thus, it offers a feasible simulation method for the advanced study of the two phase flow motion under water.
The Acoustics Of Cavitation In Spool Valve With U-Notches

Abstract:Spiral cavity produced by the swirling flow is observed in spool valve with U-notches. Individual bubbles with similar grown-up size appear in the wake of the fixed cavity. Consecutive bubble collapse produces frequency peak in the spectra, which decreases with the cavitation number. Vortex shedding occurs by the 'break-off' of the tail of the spiral cavity, the collapse of which affects significantly to those accompanied individual bubbles dynamics and acoustics. Rayleigh prediction to the bubble collapse time is taken, which is a bit smaller than the experimental result. The considerable viscidity effect of the oil medium is assumed as the predominant reason.

Abstract:A sink vortex is a common physical phenomenon in continuous casting, chemical extraction, water conservancy, and other industrial processes, and often causes damage and loss in production. Therefore, the real-time monitoring of the sink vortex state is important for improving industrial production efficiency. However, its suction-extraction phenomenon and shock vibration characteristics in the course of its formation are complex mechanical dynamic factors for flow field state monitoring. To address this issue, we set up a multi-physics model using the level set method (LSM) for a free sink vortex to study the two-phase interaction mechanism. Then, a fluid–solid coupling dynamic model was deduced to investigate the shock vibration characteristics and reveal the transition mechanism of the critical flow state. The numerical results show that the coupling energy shock induces a pressure oscillation phenomenon, which appears to be a transient enhancement of vibration at the vortex penetration state. The central part of the transient enhancement signal is a high-frequency signal. Based on the dynamic coupling model, an experimental observation platform was established to verify the accuracy of the numerical results. The water-model experiment results were accordant with the numerical results. The above results provide a reference for fluid state recognition and active vortex control for industrial monitoring systems, such as those in aerospace pipe transport, hydropower generation, and microfluidic devices.

Abstract:The two-dimensional natural convection of air in upper and a lower square cavities connected with a vertical vent is studied numerically and theoretically. At high Rayleigh numbers (Ra), it is revealed by the dynamicmode-decomposition method that the plumes yield to a new sway mode, where the plumes oscillate in the azimuthal direction around the vent ends. In particular, when Ra is high enough, a reversal convection occurs, i.e., the dominating large-scale circulation changes its flow direction quasiperiodically. A van der Pol-type model is developed based on the momentum and the energy equations, and the reversal phenomenon is explained in terms of the relaxation oscillation caused by the competition between the nonlinear advection and the thermal diffusion.

Abstract:In this paper, a semi-implicit immersed boundary body force model is derived from the compressible Navier–Stokes equations, to directly predict the viscous flow-induced sound from moving objects on a fixed Cartesian grid. To overcome the conflict of grid quality with efficiency in simulating moving-boundary problems with high-order computational aeroacoustics methods, a prediction–correction technique is utilized. This accurately satisfies no-slip wall boundary conditions at every time step without any feedback treatment. A particular contribution of the work is the introduction of a numerical model equation to analyze the body force convergence. This is useful to pre-evaluate the generated Cartesian and body-surface grids. Several benchmark aeroacoustic problems are simulated to validate the present model. Results show that the unsteady force and far-field sound directivity agree well with the previous direct numerical simulation results. The work further suggests that the developed body force model/CAA methods are capable of predicting interaction noise, especially those associated with oscillating multiple objects.

Abstract:Using the model of vortex patch, sound generation from the motion of two-dimensional vortex patches in square is studiedthrough Navier-Stokes equations. The results show that no matter how the initial distribution of vorticity with same revolving directionis, the final vorticity distribution is that of Burgers vortex with single cell, having stable structure. However, the vortex patches withopposite revolving direction have the stable structure with two cells amd their evolution is dependent on the initial condition.
Research on the Sound Radiation by Viscous Flow past the Vibrating Cylinder

Abstract:A numerical model of far-field sound pressure at low Mach number was established based on the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stockes equations and Lighthill acoustic analogy. As for computation of sound field, the sound radiated from fixed cylinder and elastically supported cylinder separately was considered. The contributions of the volume quadrupole, surface dipole and equivalent monopole terms to the sound radiation were analyzed. Furthermore, the relation between vibrating cylinder and sound generation was studied. The investigation shows that the displacement is locked when the vibrating frequency of the cylinder is same as the frequency of the vortex shedding behind the cylinder, i. e. it is in resonance. The terms induced by the velocity of cylinder and the acceleration of cylinder are the largest, whereas they only show regular rhythm at other high Reynolds numbers. There are distinctly different contributions to sound generation under the two situations. This new discovery is of great significance for the vortex induced noise control and development of the acoustic stealth theory.
The oscillating and vibrating cylinder: a benchmark to study low Mach number aeroacoustics

Abstract:Hydrodynamic and acoustic scales separate as the Mach number decreases, making the modelling of aeroacoustic phenomena singular in this flow regime. The benchmark of the flow developing around an oscillating and vibrating cylinder is one of the scarce configuration that is fully analytically tractable, and is thus precious in the validation of new theories or solvers. This work carefully derives the complete incompressible flow solution for this case, extending the axisymmetric results of the literature to more complex cylinder motion. High-order finite element method solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations provide a reference to validate the analytical formulae derived here. Both analytical and numerical investigations agree on an independence of the configuration to the Reynolds number. Up to the critical Reynolds number, found to lie above $10^4$, the hydrodynamic solution of this configuration is solely governed by the Stokes number. The exact expression of the sound radiated in the far field is computed by accounting for the cylinder scattering by means of tailored Green's functions.

Simulating time-harmonic acoustic wave effects induced by periodic holes/inclusions on surfaces

Abstract:This paper introduces the first attempt to employ a localized meshless method to analyze time-harmonic acoustic wave propagation on curved surfaces with periodic holes/inclusions. In particular, the generalized finite difference method is used as a localized meshless technique to discretize the surface gradient and Laplace-Beltrami operators defined extrinsically in the governing equations. An absorbing boundary condition is introduced to reduce reflections from boundaries and accurately simulate wave propagation on unclosed surfaces with periodic inclusions. Several benchmark examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method in simulating acoustic wave propagation on surfaces with diverse geometries, including complex shapes and periodic holes or inclusions.

Abstract:The characteristics of supersonic cavity flows were investigated using large eddy simulation together with the acoustic analogy method. A fifth-order hybrid compact-weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme was applied to calculate the convective flux, and a sixth-order compact scheme was used for the viscous flux. Farassat's Formula 1A was used to solve the Ffowcs William–Hawkings equations to obtain the far-field acoustic pressure fluctuations. The effects of cavity configuration and flow Mach number on the pressure waves generated by the interaction of shear vortices and cavity were compared. The ramped rear-step of the cavity can increase the more-organized level of flow coherent structures, and decrease the static pressure distribution on the cavity bottom-wall. The attenuation of the interactions between the shear layer vortex and the aft-ramped wall of the cavity can reduce the feedback of pressure waves upstream. The energy of the main frequency significantly decreases for the far-field acoustics in the upstream flow over the ramped rear-step cavity. Thus, the effectiveness of noise reduction by the rear-ramp is considerable for the area upstream of the cavity for the present conditions, but it is not the case opposite to and downstream of the cavity. The present conclusions are valuable for evaluating the performance of noise suppression by cavities embedded in supersonic inflows in engineering applications.
