Abstract:The oxygen isotopic microanalysis of calcite is essential for obtaining high spatial resolution data linked to microstructures, a challenge for conventional techniques. This analysis, however, relies heavily on matrix-matched reference materials, of which only a few calcite standards are available. In this study, an inorganically precipitated calcite vein sample (WS-1) was evaluated through 141 SIMS oxygen isotope analyses and was found to have a homogeneous isotopic composition, with an external reproducibility of 0.23‰ (1σ), suggesting its potential as a SIMS reference material. The precise δ18OVPDB value, determined via traditional gas-source IRMS, was –16.52 ± 0.13‰ (1SD). Matrix effects were assessed using various carbonates, including abiotic aragonite (VS001/1-A), three abiotic calcites (NBS18, Cal-1, WS-1), and a high-Mg calcite (gorgonian coral). The results revealed negligible matrix effects between abiotic aragonite and calcites but significant differences between calcite and high-Mg calcite, likely due to Mg content or differences in biogenic crystal morphology and trace organic composition. This study demonstrates the utility of in-situ oxygen isotopic microanalysis for calcite but emphasizes the need for caution when analyzing high-Mg calcitic skeletons.

Abstract:Oxygen is one of the most abundant elements in the universe and ubiquitously participates in geological and biological processes which play a critical role in shaping and maintaining habitability of the Earth. Its isotope composition is a key parameter to decode these geological and biological processes. For example, oxygen isotope composition of biogenic and abiogenic apatite are ideal proxies to reconstruct sea surface temperature and to tackle elemental cycling respectively, in which accurate and precise apatite oxygen isotope analysis is a basic requirement. Our robust evaluation demonstrates a lack of crystallographic orientation effects for Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) apatite oxygen isotope analysis (expressed as delta O-18). Apatite grains separated from the Qinghu monzonite were extensively analyzed by SIMS in the past decade in our laboratory, and 2041 individual delta O-18 measurements yield a two-standard-deviation of 0.47 parts per thousand (per mil, V-SMOW), or 0.16 parts per thousand when these measurements were integrated into 195 sessions. Homogenous oxygen isotope composition of Qinghu apatite (Qinghu-AP) at the micrometer level makes it a suitable reference material with a recommended delta O-18 value of 5.59 +/- 0.19 parts per thousand, as measured by Gas Source Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry with further validation from oxygen isotope thermometry. For seven randomly selected IGG (Institute of Geology and Geophysics)-Durango apatite crystals, our SIMS measurements suggest that they also have homogenous delta O-18 values (9.70 +/- 0.22 parts per thousand, 2 SD, n = 241, using Qinghu-AP as standard) without the presence of inter-grain and intra-grain heterogeneity. We documented a Y-coordinate related artificial effect, with measured delta O-18 values gradually increasing by similar to 1 parts per thousand from bottom to top of the mount over a distance of similar to 1.2 cm. This artifact is most likely caused by the presence of a slope (imperfect sample preparation and loading) or a gradient of accelerating voltage (conductivity of holder and sample) on the sample surface along the Y direction, which leads to an imperfect centering of the trajectory of the secondary ions. This effect can be reduced through applying a DTFA (dynamic transfer field aperture)-X correction. The presence of position-specific oxygen isotope fractionation could cause an artificial bias up to -6.7 parts per thousand when analyzing carbonated hydroxyapatite, and can reconcile the offset (e.g., -0.9 to 3.3 parts per thousand) between delta O-18 values of conodonts measured by SIMS and IRMS. When working on hydrous systems (e.g., ore deposits) and low temperature environment (e.g., conodonts), where apatite is known to be water-rich and could be carbonated, a rigorous evaluation on this artificial bias is warranted. Since position-specific oxygen isotope fractionation is a common phenomenon observed in a variety of minerals (e.g., goethite, tourmaline and muscovite), attention should be paid in future studies. Our study highlights that SIMS is capable of providing accurate and precise delta O-18 measurements at the similar to 0.2 parts per thousand level, but high-quality reference materials and rigorous evaluations of potential artificial effects (e.g., topography, position, matrix, orientation, sample holder and position-specific oxygen isotope fractionation) degrading analytical accuracy are prerequisites.

Abstract:Marine shells incorporate oxygen isotope signatures during growth, creating valuable records of seawater temperature and marine oxygen isotopic compositions. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measures these compositions in situ at finer length‐scales than traditional stable isotope analyses. However, determining oxygen isotope ratios in aragonite, the most common shell mineral, is hampered by a lack of ideal reference materials, limiting the accuracy of SIMS‐based seawater temperature reconstructions. Here, we tested the capability of SIMS to produce seawater temperature reconstructions despite the matrix calibration challenges associated with aragonite. We cultured Anadara trapezia bivalves at four controlled seawater temperatures (13–28°C) and used strontium labeling to mark the start of the temperature‐controlled shell increment, allowing for more spatially precise SIMS analysis. An improved matrix calibration was developed to ensure more accurate bio‐aragonite analyses that addressed matrix differences between the pure abiotic reference materials and the bio‐aragonite samples with intricate mineral‐organic architectures and distinct minor and trace element compositions. We regressed SIMS‐IRMS biases of abiotic and biogenic aragonites that account for their systematic differences in major, minor, and trace elements, allowing for more accurate SIMS analyses of the temperature‐controlled shell increment. The thorough matrix calibration allowed us to provide a SIMS‐based seawater‐corrected oxygen isotope thermometer of T(°C) = 23.05 ± 0.36 − 4.48 · (δ18Oaragonite [‰ VPDB] − δ18Oseawater [‰ VSMOW] ± 0.25) and 103lnαaragonite‐seawater = (17.78 ± 0.88) · 103/T (K) − (29.44 ± 2.40) that agrees with existing aragonitic IRMS‐based thermometer relationships and improves the applicability of SIMS‐based paleo‐environmental reconstructions of marine bio‐aragonites.

Abstract:Apatite is commonly used as a tracer in Earth and planetary sciences by leveraging its oxygen isotopes and volatile compositions to elucidate the derivation and evolution of magma and geological fluids. While secondary-ion mass spectrometry has proven effective in determining these compositions in apatite, the challenge lies in its relatively large spot size (>20 μm), and obtaining O isotope and volatile data from different grains or domains by the current method. In addition, the sequential analysis of volatiles is both time-consuming and constrained by limited data, leading to increased uncertainties in subsequent elemental analysis. This hinders robust interpretations of geological events and the determination of smaller-grained apatite. In this study, we propose a high lateral resolution (∼7 μm) method for the simultaneous analysis of the O isotope ratio and volatile (OH, F, Cl, and S) composition of apatite. The analysis of the eight apatite standards using this method yields results that are consistent with literature values, demonstrating its reliability and robustness. This innovative approach stands out not only for its high lateral resolution and time efficiency but also for its enhanced data robustness, laying a solid foundation for further scientific investigation and analysis.

Abstract:Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurement of oxygen isotopes in apatite has been employed more and more in petrogenetic, metallogenic, and climate change studies. Well‐characterised reference materials are needed due to the matrix effect, but they are yet to be well established. In this study, we conducted in‐situ oxygen isotopic and chemical analyses on six commonly used apatite reference materials (ie, Emerald, Kovdor, McClure, Mud Tank, Otter Lake, and Slyudyanka) and two in‐house apatite references (Qinghu and GEMS 203) to assess their oxygen isotope homogeneity and applicability for microbeam analyses. Our results show that all these apatite references are in general chemically homogeneous. In terms of oxygen isotopes, GEMS 203 (δ18O = 9.85 ± 0.40‰ [2SD], corrected by Durango 3), Kovdor (δ18O = 6.55 ± 0.38‰, 2SD), and McClure (δ18O = 5.94 ± 0.42‰, 2SD) are fairly homogeneous, whereas Emerald (δ18O = 10.37 ± 0.45‰, 2SD), Mud Tank (δ18O = 6.35 ± 0.46‰, 2SD), Otter Lake (δ18O = 9.71 ± 0.47‰, 2SD), Qinghu (δ18O = 5.44 ± 0.49‰, 2SD), and Slyudyanka (δ18O = 17.49 ± 0.43‰, 2SD) are less homogenous. This indicates that the former group represents better reference materials for in‐situ oxygen isotopic analyses, whilst the latter group can be used as secondary reference material for analytical quality control.

Abstract:High-quality oxygen isotope analysis of composition-variable minerals (e.g., ubiquitous carbonates) using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is extremely challenging. The classical off-line procedure, which requires additional electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) chemical compositions for calibrating instrumental mass fractionation (IMF), is inherently inaccurate and analytically inefficient. In this study, the first accurate and paired SIMS analysis of δ18O and Fe# [molar Fe/(Mg + Fe)] in dolomite is reported. Based on five newly developed dolomite O-isotopic standards with an Fe# range of 0.01-0.35 obtained by SIMS, a novel accurate and rapid online matrix effect calibration method for dolomite O-isotope analysis was developed using concurrent SIMS 18O-16O-56Fe16O-24Mg16O measurements without additional chemical electron probe microanalysis. A logistic equation was proposed as the best-fit curve to represent the δ18O matrix effect based on the 56Fe16O/24Mg16O ratios. For CTD-4 carbonatitic dolomite with variable Fe# but homogeneous oxygen isotopes, the off-line method exhibited highly variable apparent δ18O values in the range of 5.74-10.11‰. The online method yielded a homogeneous δ18O value of 7.94 ± 0.34‰ (2SD, n = 40), which is comparable with that of bulk analysis (7.94 ± 0.20‰; 2SD). Comprehensive analyses validated the online method as the best strategy for performing accurate δ18O analysis of samples with highly heterogeneous compositions. Based on its accuracy, simplicity, and economic feasibility, this method has potential applications in the analysis of composition-complex dolomites, detrital dolomites, and other precious terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials.

Abstract:RationaleHigh‐precision determination of silicon isotopes can be achieved by in situ multi‐collector secondary ion mass spectrometry (MS‐SIMS). The accuracy of the analyses is, however, sensitive to ion yields and instrumental mass fractionations (IMFs) induced by the analytical procedure. These effects vary from one instrument to another, with the analytical settings, and with the composition and nature of the sample. Because ion yields and IMF effects are not predictable and rely on empirical calibrations, high‐accuracy analyses require suitable sets of standards.MethodsHere, we document calibrations of ion yields and matrix effects in a set of 23 olivine standards and 3 low‐Ca pyroxene for silicon isotopic measurements in both polarities using Cameca IMS 1270 E7 and IMS 1280 HR2 ion probes set with the cesium (Cs) or radiofrequency (RF) source.ResultsSilicon ion yields show (i) strong variations with the chemical composition, and (ii) an opposite behavior between the secondary positive and negative polarities. The magnitude of IMF along the fayalite‐forsterite (olivine) series shows a complex behavior, increasing overall by ≈7‰ (secondary positive) and ≈15‰ (secondary negative) with increasing olivine Mg#. A drastic change in olivine IMF occurs at Mg# ≈ 70 in both polarities. The magnitude of IMF for low‐Ca pyroxene from Mg# = 70–100 is almost constant in both polarities, i.e. ≈0.1‰ in secondary positive and ≈0.15‰ in secondary negative. The analytical uncertainties on individual analyses were ± 0.05–0.15‰ (2 S.E.) with both sources, and the external errors for each standard material were ≈ ±0.05–0.5‰ (2 S.E.) with the Cs source and ≈ ±0.03–0.15‰ (2 S.E.) with the RF source.ConclusionsThe IMF effect of Si isotopes in silicates shows complex behaviors that vary with the chemistry and the settings of the instrument. We developed a suitable set of standards in order to perform high‐accuracy in situ measurements of Si isotopes in olivine and low‐Ca pyroxene characterized by varying chemical compositions by MC‐SIMS.

Abstract:Secondary ion mass spectrometry was used to test the δ 18 O and δ 34 S nanogram‐scale homogeneity of a suite of candidate sulfate minerals, ultimately selecting three barite, two anhydrite, and two gypsum samples from the Royal Ontario Museum that have repeatabilities for their SIMS measurements of better than ±0.39‰ and ±0.37‰ (1 s ) for oxygen and sulfur isotope ratios, respectively. Metrological splits of each of the seven materials were sent to multiple gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry laboratories in order to establish their absolute 18 O/ 16 O and 34 S/ 32 S ratios. The inter‐laboratory results of GS‐IRMS analyses yielded reasonably narrow ranges in δ 18 O VSMOW , whereas larger variations in δ 34 S VCDT values were found between the results from the gas source laboratories. All samples have good reproducibility within laboratories of GS‐IRMS 10 3 δ 18 O values of between ±0.24‰ and ±0.44‰ (1 s ). The reproducibility within laboratories of GS‐IRMS 10 3 δ 34 S values range from ±0.07‰ to ±0.99‰ (1 s ). Here we also discuss some of the current analytical limitations affecting these isotope‐mineral systems. A total of 256 metrological splits have been prepared from each of these seven materials; these aliquots will be made available to the global geochemical community.
Barite oxygen isotope reference materials for highly precise and accurate SIMS microanalysis

Abstract:Barite is an important record of marine sulfate evolution throughout geologic history. Variations in oxygen isotope compositions (δ 18 O) at the microscale are highly important for studying the evolution of marine sulfate. However, the application of this proxy has been hindered due to the lack of reference materials for secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) microanalysis. This study introduces two new potential reference materials, NJU-Ba-1 and FJ barite for microbeam oxygen isotope measurements. Detailed examinations of the texture and major elements revealed no internal zoning of ground fragments from the two barite reference materials. The recommended δ 18 O VSMOW values of NJU-Ba-1 and FJ were determined by gas-source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS-IRMS), with results of 7.94 ± 0.30‰ (2SD, N = 11) and 7.52 ± 0.34‰ (2SD, N = 8), respectively. SIMS instrumental stability was monitored by analyses of well characterized zircon references (Penglai and Qinghu), and the robustness of the SIMS barite δ 18 O measurements was further assessed by comparison with the values recommended by GS-IRMS. The effects of the crystallographic orientation, topography, and X – Y position on SIMS barite δ 18 O measurement were also examined. Multiple SIMS analyses suggest that both NJU-Ba-1 and FJ barite are homogeneous in oxygen isotope composition at the ∼20 μm level, with two standard deviations (2SD) of 0.36‰ ( N = 383) and 0.58‰ ( N = 325), respectively.

Abstract:Key Points Ninepotential chromite reference materials for SIMS oxygen isotope measurements. All these chromite samples exhibit good reproducibility in terms of oxygen isotopic composition. These chromites display varying instrumental mass fractionation, influenced by their end‐member compositions, notably the magnetite and spinel components. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurements of δ18O in nine chromite (Mg, Fe)(Al, Cr, Fe)2O4 samples (Cr# = 0.58–0.79, Mg# = 0.39–0.72) from chromitites and harzburgite have confirmed their intra‐ and inter‐grain isotopic homogeneity, making them suitable reference materials for in situ analysis. The SIMS measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition of these chromites exhibit a range of instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) as a function of the end‐member compositions of the chromite, particularly the magnetite (FeOFe2O3) and spinel (MgAl2O4) components. Functional relationships have been developed to correct for IMF over the compositional range XMag = 0.01 to 0.05, and XSpl = 0.14 to 0.22. We conclude that, to be accurate, SIMS measurements of δ18O must be combined with electron probe microanalyses of the individual analysed spots.

Abstract:Over 1400 electron probe and 700 ion probe microanalyses were performed on eleven mineral separates to evaluate their potential as reference materials for in situ Li isotopic determination. Our results suggest the homogenous distributions of major elements, Li and its isotopes for each sample. Hence, these samples are suitable to be used as reference materials for in situ measurements of Li abundance and Li isotopes by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) or laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS). These samples have the advantage of mitigating probable matrix effects during calibration owing to the wide range of compositions. The effect of composition on the δ7Li of olivine measured by SIMS is a linear function of composition, with δ7Li increasing by 1.0‰ for each mole per cent decrease in forsterite component.

Abstract:An online method using continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-IRMS) interfaced with a Gasbench II device was established to analyze carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions and to estimate the content of minor amounts of carbonate in silicate rocks. The mixtures of standard materials and high-purity quartz are firstly used to calibrate different quantities of carbonate in silicates. The results suggest that the accuracy and precision of the online analysis are both better than those obtained using an offline method. There is a positive correlation between the carbonate weight and the Mass44 ion beam intensity (or peak area). When the weight of carbonate in the mixtures is greater than 70 mu g (equal to similar to 1800 mV Mass44 ion beam intensity), the delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of samples usually have accuracy and precision of +/-0.1 parts per thousand and +/-0.2 parts per thousand (1 sigma), respectively. If the weight is less than 70 mu g, some limitations (e.g., not perfectly linear) are encountered that significantly reduce the accuracy and precision. The measured delta O-18 values are systematically lower than the true values by -0.3 to -0.7 parts per thousand; the lower the carbonate content, the lower the measured delta O-18 value. For samples with lower carbonate content, the required phosphoric acid doses are higher and more oxygen isotope exchanges with the water in the phosphoric acid. To guarantee accurate results with high precision, multiple analyses of in-house standards and an artificial MERCK sample with delta C-13 values from -35.58 to 1.61 parts per thousand and delta O-18 from 6.04 to 18.96 parts per thousand were analyzed simultaneously with the unknown sample. This enables correction of the measured raw data for the natural sample based on multiple-point normalization. Abstract:Carbon isotopes have been widely used in tracing a wide variety of geological and environmental processes. The carbon isotope composition of bulk rocks and minerals was conventionally analyzed by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), and, more recently, secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been widely used to determine carbon isotope composition of carbon-bearing solid materials with good spatial resolution. Here, we present a new method that couples a RESOlution S155 193 nm laser ablation system with a Nu Plasma II MC-ICP-MS, with the aim of measuring carbon isotopes in situ in carbonate minerals (i.e., calcite and aragonite). Under routine operating conditions for δ13C analysis, instrumental bias generally drifts by 0.8‰-2.0‰ in a typical analytical session of 2-3 h. Using a magmatic calcite as the standard, the carbon isotopic composition was determined for a suite of calcite samples with δ13C values in the range of -6.94‰ to 1.48‰. The obtained δ13C data are comparable to IRMS values. The combined standard uncertainty for magmatic calcite is <0.3‰ (1s). No significant matrix effects have been identified in calcite with the amplitude of chemical composition variation (i.e., MnO, SrO, MgO, or FeO) up to 2.5 wt %. Two modern corals were investigated using magmatic calcite as the calibration standard, and the average δ13C values for both corals are similar to the bulk IRMS values. Moreover, coral exhibits significant heterogeneity in carbon isotope compositions, with differences up to 4.85‰ within an individual coral. This study indicates that LA-MC-ICP-MS can serve as an appropriate method to analyze carbon isotopes of carbonate minerals in situ.
In Situ Oxygen Isotope Determination in Serpentine Minerals by Ion Microprobe: Reference Materials and Applications to Ultrahigh‐Pressure Serpentinites

Abstract:We present the first investigation of in situ oxygen isotopes in serpentine minerals by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP). Chemically homogeneous samples of antigorite (delta O-18 = 8.30 +/- 0.12 parts per thousand), chrysotile (delta O-18 = 4.37 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand) and lizardite (delta O-18 = 5.26 +/- 0.20 parts per thousand) analysed by laser fluorination are identified as potential reference materials. They were analysed by SHRIMP to assess their homogeneity compared with the San Carlos olivine, as well as for potential matrix bias and crystal orientation effects. The reproducibility achieved for all samples was +/- 0.30-0.55 parts per thousand (95% confidence level). Matrix bias between antigorite/olivine and antigorite/lizardite was up to similar to +3 parts per thousand and -1 parts per thousand, respectively. Crystal orientation effects were identified only in chrysotile, and no matrix bias was observed over the investigated compositional range within each serpentine mineral. The new reference materials were used to measure the oxygen isotope composition of serpentines in an ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt from Tianshan (China). By combining oxygen isotopes and trace element microanalyses, several stages of serpentinisation were recognised: (a) seafloor alteration, (b) recycling of internal metamorphic fluids during isothermal decompression and (c) shallow interaction with meteoric water during exhumation. No interaction with fluids derived from the surrounding metapelites during subduction was identified.
On the Coordination of Mg2+ in Aragonite: Ab-initio Absorption Spectroscopy and Isotope Fractionation Study

Abstract:Magnesium in biogenic aragonite skeletons is widely used to infer the geochemical conditions under which the minerals precipitated. However, because molecular speciation of Mg2+ in the aragonite crystal structure remains uncertain, questions are often posed about the reliability and utility of Mg as a paleoenvironment proxy. In this study, we investigated the Mg2+ coordination in abiogenic aragonite by applying first-principles density functional theory (DFT). We report for the first time a Mg2+-site disordered structure model of aragonite: substituted Mg2+ is five-fold coordinated and induces substantial disorder in the bond distances that depends on the relative positions of Mg2+ sites. Using the site disorder model, DFT qualitatively reproduces the key features of experimental Mg K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of aragonite. DFT also resolves a long-standing conflict between experimental and theoretical studies pertaining to the enrichment of 26 Mg in aragonite relative to calcite. The Boltzmann-averaged Mg-26/Mg-24 reduced partition function ratios were calculated in the order of aqueous Mg2+ > Mg-doped aragonite > Mg-doped calcite. The disorder structure model is likely applicable to the substitution of cations with radii smaller than the radius of Ca2+ ions in aragonite. Our study provides atomistic insight into metal substitution effects on the metal content and isotope fractionation in biogenic aragonite, which are critical for developing a reliable paleoenvironment proxy. In situ LA-ICPMS U–Pb dating of sulfates: applicability of carbonate reference materials as matrix-matched standards

Abstract:Abstract. Recent developments in analytical capabilities in the field of in situ laser ablation mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) have expanded the applications of U–Pb geochronometers in low-U minerals such as carbonates or garnets. The rapid evolution of the technique relies on well-characterized matrix-matched reference materials. In this article, we explore the suitability of using carbonate as an “almost-matrix-matched reference material” for in situ U–Pb dating of sulfates. For such purpose, we have used the astrochronologically dated gypsum and anhydrite samples deposited during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.97–5.33 Ma) and compared these dates with the U–Pb ages obtained by LA-ICPMS. Although the majority of the samples failed due to the elevated common Pb content and low 238U/204Pb ratios, five of the samples showed a higher dispersion on U/Pb ratios. The obtained dates in four of these samples are comparable with the expected ages, while another gave an unexpected younger age, each of them with 6 %–11 % of uncertainty. The pit depth of the spots showed that the sulfates ablate similar to carbonates, so the offset due to the crater geometry mismatch or downhole fractionation can be assumed to be negligible. To sum up, the bias between the U–Pb and expected cyclostratigraphic ages, if any, is included in the uncertainty, and thus the results obtained here suggest that carbonate reference material is currently the best option for standardization of in situ U–Pb sulfate analyses.
Addressing Molybdenite187 Re Parent- 187 Os Daughter Intra-Crystalline Decoupling In Light of Recent In-Situ Micro-Scale Observations

Abstract:Abstract Every so often, an analytical advancement or challenging geological occurrence necessitates re-evaluation of well-established geochronological methods. Rhenium-osmium (Re-Os) dating of sulfide minerals, especially molybdenite, by isotope dilution-negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-NTIMS) yields demonstrably accurate, robust ages. Difficulty in determining an age is caused by either 1) geological complexity including intra-crystalline heterogeneity or 2) inadequate analytical capabilities. Established, systematic methods overcome most of these difficulties, with exceptions. With respect to molybdenite, geological complexity is encountered as macro-scale polyphase overgrowths. Micro-scale complexity is observed as primary Re oscillatory zoning and secondary intra-granular 187Re parent-187Os daughter decoupling. Macro- and micro-scale geologic heterogeneities are overcome by systematic, targeted sampling protocols built upon careful hand sample and microscopic observations linking molybdenite crystallization to the host rock's geologic history.Advances in instrumentation permit more accurate and precise determination of elemental and isotopic compositions at the micro-scale, which ultimately reveals geological complexity and heterogeneity. Yet, newly produced high-resolution data must be carefully scrutinized and interpreted correctly. Two new micro-scale analytical techniques have been proposed: (1) to use NanoSIMS imaging to reveal heterogeneities that could preclude micro-scale geochronology (spot dating) methods, and (2) enable micro-scale geochronology using LA-ICP-MS/MS to distinguish the interfering masses of parent Re and daughter Os isotopes. We turn first to NIST Reference Material 8599, Henderson molybdenite, to compare its Re-Os characteristics and ID-NTIMS results with the newly published Re-Os molybdenite data. We identify the "best possible results" by quantifying the homogeneity of the NIST molybdenite, including model age variability, precision of ID-NTIMS analyses, and statistical treatment. Subsequently, we examine the limitations of the two newly proposed methods. We demonstrate that parent-daughter decoupling cannot be precluded by visual inspection of NanoSIMS isotopic maps. In addition, we prove mathematically that the quantifying the contribution of 187Os to the total measured mass 187 by LA-ICP-MS/MS is far too imprecise to achieve high-precision geochronology. Statistical data treatment and reporting can also result in misguided conclusions and applications.

Abstract:Rationale Micrometeorites are extraterrestrial particles smaller than ~2 mm in diameter, most of which melted during atmospheric entry and crystallised or quenched to form ‘cosmic spherules’. Their parentage among meteorite groups can be inferred from triple‐oxygen isotope compositions, for example, by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). This method uses sample efficiently, preserving spherules for other investigations. While SIMS precisions are improving steadily, application requires assumptions about instrumental mass fractionation, which is controlled by sample chemistry and mineralogy (matrix effects). Methods We have developed a generic SIMS method using sensitive high‐mass resolution ion micro probe‐stable isotope (SHRIMP‐SI) that can be applied to finely crystalline igneous textures as in cosmic spherules. We correct for oxygen isotope matrix effects using the bulk chemistry of samples obtained by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) and model bulk chemical compositions as three‐component mixtures of olivine, basaltic glass and Fe‐oxide (magnetite), finding a unique matrix correction for each target. Results Our first results for cosmic spherules from East Antarctica compare favourably with established micrometeorite groups defined by precise and accurate but consumptive bulk oxygen isotope methods. The Fe‐oxide content of each spherule is the main control on magnitude of oxygen isotope ratio bias, with effects on δ 18 O up to ~6‰. Our main peak in compositions closely coincides with so‐called ‘Group 1’ objects identified by consumptive methods. Conclusions The magnitude of SIMS matrix effects we find is similar to the previous intraspherule variations, which are now the limiting factor in understanding their compositions. The matrix effect for each spherule should be assessed quantitatively and individually, especially addressing Fe‐oxide content. We expect micrometeorite triple‐oxygen isotope compositions obtained by SIMS to converge on the main clusters (Groups 1 to 4) after correction firstly for magnetite content and secondarily for other phases (e.g., basaltic glass) in each target.
