Abstract:A procedure to obtain future local precipitation characteristics focused on extreme conditions has been developed based on a weather generator. The method involves six major steps: (1) the weather generator was calibrated using observed daily precipitation at 220 Swedish stations during 1961-2004; (2) present and future daily precipitation characteristics for the Swedish stations from two global climate models, namely ECHAM5 and HadCM3, were used to calculate weather generator parameters for the present and future climates at global climate model spatial scales; (3) the ratio of the weather generator parameters for the present climate simulated by the global climate models to those calculated for each station falling into the global climate model grid box were computed for all the stations; (4) these ratios were also assumed to be valid in the future climate, that way the future parameters for each station for the global climate model projected future climate could be calculated; (5) using the estimated future parameters of the weather generator, the future daily precipitation at each station could be simulated by the weather generator; (6) the simulated daily precipitation was used to compute eight indices describing mean and extreme precipitation climates. The future mean and extreme precipitation characteristics at the stations under the Second Report on Emission Scenarios A2 scenario were obtained and presented. An overall increasing trend for frequency and intensity of the indices are identified for the majority of the stations studied. The developed downscaling methodology is relatively simple but useful in deriving local precipitation changes, including changes in the precipitation extremes.
Evaluation of a Multi-Site Weather Generator in Simulating Precipitation in the Qiantang River Basin, East China

Abstract:Recent years have seen a surge in assessment of potential impacts of climate change. As one of the most important tools for generating synthetic hydrological model inputs, weather generators have played an important role in climate change impact analysis of water management. However, most weather generators like statistical downscaling model (SDSM) and long Ashton research station weather generator (LARS-WG) are designed for single site data generation. Considering the significance of spatial correlations of hydro-meteorological data, multi-site weather data generation becomes a necessity. In this study we aim to evaluate the performance of a new multi-site stochastic model, geo-spatial temporal weather generator (GiST), in simulating precipitation in the Qiantang River Basin, East China. The correlation matrix, precipitation amount and occurrence of observed and GiST-generated data are first compared for the evaluation process. Then we use the GiST model combined with the change factor method (CFM) to investigate future changes of precipitation (2071–2100) in the study area using one global climate model, Hadgem2_ES, and an extreme emission scenario RCP 8.5. The final results show that the simulated precipitation amount and occurrence by GiST matched their historical counterparts reasonably. The correlation coefficients between simulated and historical precipitations show good consistence as well. Compared with the baseline period (1961–1990), precipitation in the future time period (2071–2100) at high elevation stations will probably increase while at other stations decreases will occur. This study implies potential application of the GiST stochastic model in investigating the impact of climate change on hydrology and water resources.
Multi-Site Temperature And Precipitation Projections In Qiantang River Basin

Abstract:Assessment of potential impacts of climate change on water resources is becoming more important in recent decades. Weather generators, which can create synthetic daily weather data of long periods of time, are very common tools to deal with climate change issues. However, most weather generators like SDSM, normally ignore the spatial correlations of hydro-meteorological data. In this study, a stochastic model, GiST is used to generate daily rainfall and temperature for multiple sites in Qiantang River Basin, China. The main difference between GiST and other weather generators is the consideration of spatial correlations among sites. The historical climate data (1961-1990) is used to calibrate the correlation matrix, and change factors are calculated based on the baseline (1961-1990) climate and future (2011-2040) climate. Future daily weather data (temperature and precipitation) are then downscaled based on Scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 using Hadgem2-ES. The results show that historical climate closely matched its simulated counterpart. For both rainfall amounts and temperature, the correlation coefficients calculated from the observed pair-wise climate data and the ones from GiST-simulated synthetic data show good consistence. The outputs from the future period are compared with the historical climate data. In general, the following conclusions are drawn. First, the relative changes of mean monthly minimum temperature are higher than those of mean monthly maximum temperature. Mean temperature changes slightly except Tianmushan. Second, the future annual precipitation decreases slightly under the four scenarios at Hangzhou, Huangshan and Jinhua while a contrary trend can be observed at Tianmushan and Tunxi. At Shengxian, different patterns of change can be found under the four scenarios. Monthly precipitations at Hangzhou, Jinhua decrease under most conditions while it increases in summer and decreases in winter at Tianmushan and Tunxi.
Estimation of design storm in Han River basin with CCSM3 model

Abstract:This study applied a LARS-WG weather generator and a general circulation model CCSM3 to simulate synthetic weather data under the SRA1B, SRA2 and SRB1 scenarios from IPCC. Design storms of 100 years return period at 20 stations in the Han River basin for the period of 2020s were calculated using the P-Ⅲ curve and the L-moment approach, and the design storms of the whole basin were interpolated with Kriging method. Results show that the design storms in this basin tend to decrease from the downstream to upstream. Under SRA1B and SRA2, the largest design storms will occur at Wuhan station. Relative to the existing conditions, the largest design storms in 2020s will be greater in all the three scenarios. They will be increased by about 40mm under SRA1B and SRA2, while under SRA2 and SRB1 they will be decreased in the upstream.
Stochastic Generation of Daily Rainfall Events: A Single-Site Rainfall Model with Copula-based Joint Simulation of Rainfall Characteristics and Classification and Simulation of Rainfall Patterns

Abstract:Rainfall event simulation can be very useful in many hydrological and hydraulic practices such as darn design. The aim of this study is to propose a new single-site stochastic model for generating daily rainfall events. The model has two components: Copula-based joint simulation of rainfall characteristics and rainfall temporal pattern simulation. Compared with prevailing stochastic rainfall models, this new model can not only preserve the dependence relationship between rainfall duration and rainfall depth by using Copula functions, but also take different temporal rainfall patterns that can cause various hydrological responses of watersheds into consideration. Additionally, the internal clustering validation index is introduced in this study to objectively determine the number of representative rainfall patterns in this model. Lastly, a framework is designed to apply the developed stochastic model to 39 gauged meteorological stations in Zhejiang Province, East China and to extend its application to one ungauged site for validation. The final validation results were sound and indicated that the developed stochastic model is robust and can be applied at both gauged stations and ungauged sites for generating long rainfall records.

Abstract:This paper describes a new weather generator – the 10-state empirical model – that combines a 10-state, first-order Markov chain with a non-parametric precipitation amounts model. Using a doubly-stochastic transition-matrix results in a weather generator for which the overall precipitation distribution (including both wet and dry days) and the temporal-correlation can be modified independently for climate change studies. This paper assesses the ability of the 10-state empirical model to simulate daily area-average precipitation in the Torne River catchment in northern Sweden/western Finland in the context of 3 other models: a 10-state model with a parametric (Gamma) amounts model; a wet/dry chain with the empirical amounts model; and a wet/dry chain with the parametric amounts model. The ability to accurately simulate the distribution of multi-day precipitation in the catchment is the primary consideration. Results showed that the 10-state empirical model represented accumulated 2- to 14-day precipitation most realistically. Further, the distribution of precipitation on wet days in the catchment is related to the placement of a wet day within a wet-spell, and the 10-state models represented this realistically, while the wet/dry models did not. Although all four models accurately reproduced the annual and monthly averages in the training data, all models underestimated inter-annual and inter-seasonal variance. Even so, the 10-state empirical model performed best. We conclude that the multi-state model is a promising candidate for hydrological applications, as it simulates multi-day precipitation well, but that further development is required to improve the simulation of interannual variation.

Abstract:A classification of Swedish weather patterns (SWP) was developed by applying a multi-objective fuzzy-rule-based classification method (MOFRBC) to large-scale-circulation predictors in the context of statistical downscaling of daily precipitation at the station level. The predictor data was mean sea level pressure (MSLP) and geopotential heights at 850 (H850) and 700 hPa (H700) from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and from the HadAM3 GCM. The MOFRBC was used to evaluate effects of two future climate scenarios (A2 and B2) on precipitation patterns on two regions in south-central and northern Sweden. The precipitation series were generated with a stochastic, autoregressive model conditioned on SWP. H850 was found to be the optimum predictor for SWP, and SWP could be used instead of local classifications with little information lost. The results in the climate projection indicated an increase in maximum 5-day precipitation and precipitation amount on a wet day for the scenarios A2 and B2 for the period 2070–2100 compared to 1961–1990. The relative increase was largest in the northern region and could be attributed to an increase in the specific humidity rather than to changes in the circulation patterns.
Statistical downscaling and scenario construction of precipitation in Scania, southern Sweden

Abstract:Statistical downscaling models for precipitation in Scania, southern Sweden, have been developed and applied to calculate the changes in the future Scanian precipitation climate due to projected changes in the atmospheric composition. The models are based on multiple linear regression, linking large-scale predictors at monthly time resolution to regional statistics of daily precipitation on a monthly basis. To account for spatial precipitation variability within the area, the precipitation statistics were derived for different regions in Scania. The final downscaling models, developed for different regions and seasons, use atmospheric circulation, large-scale humidity and precipitation as predictors. Among the precipitation statistics examined, only the models for estimating the mean precipitation and the frequency of wet days were skilful. Based on the Canadian Global Circulation Model 1 (CGCM1), a future scenario of these two statistics was created. The downscaled scenario shows a significant increase of the annual mean precipitation by about 10% and a slight decrease in the frequency of wet days, indicating an increase in the precipitation amounts as well as in the precipitation intensity. The main increase of precipitation amounts and intensity occur during winter, while the summer precipitation amounts decrease slightly. The seasonal changes found in precipitation are likely attributed to changes in the westerly flow of the atmospheric circulation.

Abstract:A stochastic model for daily precipitation simulation in China was developed based on the framework of a ‘Richardson-type’ weather generator that is an important tool in studying impacts of weather/climate on a variety of systems including ecosystem and risk assessment. The purpose of this work is to develop a weather generator for applications in China. The focus is on precipitation simulation since determination of other weather variables such as temperature is dependent on precipitation simulation. A framework of first order Markov Chain with Gamma Distribution for daily precipitation is adopted in this work. Based on this framework, four parameters of precipitation simulation for each month at 672 stations all over China were determined using daily precipitation data from 1961 to 2000. Compared with previous works, our estimation for the parameters was made for more stations and longer observations, which makes the weather generator more applicable and reliable. Spatial distributions of the four parameters are analyzed in a regional climate context. The seasonal variations of these parameters at five stations representing regional differences are discussed. Based on the estimated monthly parameters at 672 stations, daily precipitations for any period can be simulated. A 30-year simulation was made and compared with observations during 1971–2000 in terms of annual and monthly statistics. The results are satisfactory, which demonstrates the usefulness of the weather generator.
Estimation of Design Storms under HadCM3 Model for Qiantangjiang River Basin

Abstract:Climate change affects the frequency and intensity of extreme hydrological events,e.g.extreme storm in a very direct way. Studying these effects caused by climate change will provide great support for disaster mitigation and engineering design.This paper applied the LARS-WG weather generator to simulate synthetic weather data under the A1B,A2 and B1 emission scenarios from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) using the results of General Circulation Model HadCM3.Based on the L-moments approach,design storms of different return periods were calculated for the Qiantangjiang River Basin in 2055s using the P-III distribution function.The final results show that the LARS-WG weather generator has good capability in simulating synthetic weather data in the Qiantang River Basin and the maximum bias between observed and simulated design storms of 200a return period is 8.52%,occurring at the Shengxian Station.The design storms of different return periods tend to increase under the A1B and B1 scenarios,while decline under the A2 scenarios at the most stations.And design storm of 100a return period at the Hangzhou Station will be 209.14mm under the A1B scenarios,11 percent larger than that in the baseline period.The biggest increase and decrease of the design storm of 100a return period is 39.54% and 42.79%,occurring at the Jinhua Station under the B1 scenarios and Tianmushan station under the A2 scenarios respectively.

Abstract:With global warming, hydrological regimes in the headwater basins of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) have significantly changed. Investigating the responses of hydrological processes to climate change in TP has become more and more important to make robust strategies for water resources management. However, using just a few GCMs may constrain the uncertainty in assessment of climate impacts. Therefore, a framework is proposed in this study to generate ensemble climate change scenarios and then investigate changes of hydrological processes under climate change in the upper reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River basin (UYZR) and Lancang River basin (ULR). Firstly, the Latin Hypercube Simulation (LHS) is used to generate an ensemble of future climate change scenarios by resampling change factors of meteorological variables from 18 GCMs under emission scenarios RCP2.6 and RCP8.5. The inherent dependence structures of change factors, i.e. the correlations of change factors among 12 months for different meteorological variables, are also considered in ensembles. Secondly, the HBV hydrological model coupled with a degree-day snowmen model is applied to explore the potential change of runoff in the future period 2041-2070. Results show that: 1) the resampling method is effective and can provide a wide ensemble of climate change scenarios. 2) Precipitation, temperature and potential evapotranspiration in the UYZR and ULR basins are expected to increase under the two scenarios, particularly under RCP8.5. 3) The total runoff also shows a moderately upward trend in two basins, both mainly due to increased precipitation. In the UYZR basin, fast runoff accounts for a larger proportion in total runoff than slow runoff, while in ULR, both almost play the same role in total runoff. Furthermore, snowmelt-induced runoff in both basins would be less and rainfall-induced runoff will probably become more important in the future. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Statistical Downscaling of Daily Precipitation from GCM Output : A Swedish Case Study

Abstract:A global climate change may have large impacts on water resources on regional and global scales. General circulation models (GCMs) are the most used tools to evaluate climate-change scenarios on a global scale. They are, however, insufficiently describing the effects at the local scale. This thesis evaluates different approaches of statistical downscaling of precipitation from large-scale circulation variables, both concerning the method performance and the optimum choice of predictor variables. The analogue downscaling method (AM) was found to work well as “benchmark” method in comparison to more complicated methods. AM was implemented using principal component analysis (PCA) and Teweles-Wobus Scores (TWS). Statistical properties of daily and monthly precipitation on a catchment in south-central Sweden, as well as daily precipitation in three catchments in China were acceptably downscaled.A regression method conditioning a weather generator (SDSM) as well as a fuzzy-rule based circulation-pattern classification method conditioning a stochastical precipitation model (MOFRBC) gave good results when applied on Swedish and Chinese catchments. Statistical downscaling with MOFRBC from GMC (HADAM3P) output improved the statistical properties as well as the intra-annual variation of precipitation.The studies show that temporal and areal settings of the predictor are important factors concerning the success of precipitation modelling. The MOFRCB and SDSM are generally performing better than the AM, and the best choice of method is depending on the purpose of the study. MOFRBC applied on output from a GCM future scenario indicates that the large-scale circulation will not be significantly affected. Adding humidity flux as predictor indicated an increased intensity both in extreme events and daily amounts in central and northern Sweden.
Potential future changes of the diurnal precipitation properties over Sweden

Abstract:In this study we investigate potential future changes of the diurnal rainfall cycle over Sweden in the summer season (AMJJAS). Rainfall extremes are one of the most significant natural hazards related to climate. Precipitation characteristics strongly influence crops, soil properties, run-off and erosion, as well as human infrastructure such as the drainage systems in urban areas. The investigation of sub-daily rainfall records makes it possible to get detailed information about the diurnal precipitation cycle. A high-quality 1-hourly precipitation database covering 13 years of observations from 93 stations is available. In previous studies it could be shown that there is a distinct temporal and spatial pattern of the diurnal rainfall cycle. The performance of the Rossby Centre regional climate model (RCA3) in terms of simulating the observed diurnal cycle was investigated and the simulations quite realistically captured the general characteristics of the diurnal cycle. The diurnal cycle can be characterized by the presence of a peak, its timing and its shape. A higher and narrower peak means higher rainfall intensity on a shorter timescale. In contrast, a flatter and wider peak reflects a smaller temporal diurnal variability and lower rainfall intensity.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method for modelling precipitation in Sweden. We consider a chain dependent stochastic model that consists of a component that models the probability of occurrence of precipitation at a weather station and a component that models the amount of precipitation at the station when precipitation does occur. For the first component, we show that for most of the weather stations in Sweden a Markov chain of an order higher than one is required. For the second component, which is a Gaussian process with transformed marginals, we use a composite of the empirical distribution of the amount of precipitation below a given threshold and the generalized Pareto distribution for the excesses in the amount of precipitation above the given threshold. The derived models are then used to compute different weather indices. The distribution of the modelled indices and the empirical ones show good agreement, which supports the choice of the model.
The Diurnal Precipitation Cycle over Sweden - Comparing Observations with Simulations from a High-Resolution Regional Climate Model (RCA3)

Abstract:It is known that climate models still have remarkable defficiencies in simulating precipitation characteristics observed on different temporal scales. This also applies for sub-daily scales, i.e. the diurnal precipitation cycle. Even if the large-scale circulation conditions are simluated fairly well and give the background conditions for regional rainfall characteristics, the mechanisms triggering timing and amount of rainfall are not understood completely. Precipitation characteristics show a relativey low spatial autocorrelation. Increasing the spatial resolution of climate models may be one way to improve the quality of climate simulations in terms of simulating local and regional precipitation climatology.
Estimation of Areal Precipitation for Runoff Modelling Using Wind Data: a Case Study in Sweden

Abstract:In mountainous regions, rainfall distribution is influenced by topography in combination with wind speed and direction. This has implications for estimates of catchment precipitation as input to hydrological models. The objective of this work was to investigate if wind information can be used to improve the accuracy of precipitation estimates, particularly for operational applications. A geo- strophic wind, computed from pressure observations, was assumed to represent the airflow at an altitude relevant for precipitation distribution. Interpolated values of precipitation (optimal inter- polation) were verified directly against point observations. In some mountainous catchments with low annual evapotranspiration, estimates of long-term mean areal precipitation could be verified through the water balance equation. The effects of the interpolations with and without wind informa- tion on the performance of a rainfall-runoff model were also investigated. There were 2 main factors in favour of using wind information in the interpolation: (1) a better description of the seasonal distribution; and (2) a lower sensitivity to reductions in the number of meteorological stations.
Improving subseasonal forecast of precipitation in Europe by combining a stochastic weather generator with dynamical models

Abstract:We show the capacity of a statistical system to improve the forecast skill of European precipitation using the analogues of subseasonal‐to‐seasonal dynamical models. Our results show the high potential of the circulation analogue method to improve ensemble forecasts of European precipitation compared with numerical models. We propose a forecasting tool for precipitation based on analogues of circulation defined from 5‐day hindcasts and a stochastic weather generator that we call "HC–SWG." In this study, we aim to improve the forecast of European precipitation for subseasonal lead times (from 2 to 4 weeks) using the HC–SWG. We designed the HC–SWG to generate an ensemble precipitation forecast from the European Centre of Medium‐range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Centre National de la Recherche Météorologique (CNRM) subseasonal‐to‐seasonal ensemble reforecasts. We define analogues from 5‐day ensemble reforecast of Z500 from the ECMWF (11 members) and CNRM (10 members) models. Then, we generate a 100‐member ensemble for precipitation over Europe. We evaluate the skill of the ensemble forecast using probabilistic skill scores such as the continuous ranked probability skill score (CRPSS) and receiver operating characteristic curve. We obtain reasonable forecast skill scores within 35 days for different locations in Europe. The CRPSS shows positive improvement with respect to climatology and persistence at the station level. The HC–SWG shows a capacity to distinguish between events and non‐events of precipitation within 15 days at the different stations. We compare the HC–SWG forecast with other precipitation forecasts to further confirm the benefits of our method. We found that the HC–SWG shows improvement against the ECMWF precipitation forecast until 25 days.

Abstract:Temperature increases are associated with an intensification of heavy sub‐daily extreme rainfall by approximately 7% per °C, in accordance with the Clausius‐Clapeyron (CC) relation. As a result of this intensification, there are concerns regarding the increased frequency and magnitude of floods in small to medium‐sized catchments. The high‐resolution two‐dimensional weather generator (WG), AWE‐GEN‐2d, offers an ideal tool to simulate the climate variables required to assess the catchment‐scale hydrological response at high resolution. However, it lacked an explicit representation of the relationship between temperature and precipitation that can mimic the CC relationship. Therefore, we introduce a newly revised version of the model, named AWE‐GEN‐2d‐CC, designed to mirror the observed CC scaling by conditioning the simulation of precipitation properties (intensity and area) on temperature. We demonstrate the model's efficacy in representing future extreme rainfall by simulating their potential impact on the hydrological response of a mountainous catchment in the Swiss Alps. Based on observations and future climate model projections, AWE‐GEN‐2d‐CC was used to generate large ensembles of present and end‐of‐century climate data at hourly and 2‐km resolutions, used subsequently as input to Topkapi‐ETH, a physically‐based, distributed hydrological model. The new version of the WG successfully mimics the CC scaling of heavy rainfall, leading to an intensification of short‐duration heavy rainfall in future climates, in contrast with the results obtained using the original model. This allows for a more realistic assessment of future rainfall impact on hydrological response, which, in the demonstration application, shows a modulated effect even for short durations.

Abstract:This study investigated the diurnal cycle of precipitation in Sweden using hourly ground observations for 1996–2008. General characteristics of phase and amplitude for the diurnal cycle of precipitation, both in amount and frequency, were identified. In the warm season (April—September), the ‘typical’ afternoon (14–16 LST) peaks are dominant over inland Sweden, whereas late night to early morning (04–06 LST) peaks with relatively weak amplitude are discernable in the east coast along the Baltic Sea. The diurnal variation is almost negligible in the cold season (October—March), due to the weak solar radiation at high latitudes. The variations of convective activity forced by solar heating and modulated by geographical characteristics were suggested as primarily factors to invoke the cycles and spatial variation identified. The observed cycle was compared with the cycle simulated by a regional climate model. The model fairly well captures the spatial pattern of the phase of the diurnal cycle. However, the warm season afternoon peak is simulated too early and too uniformly across the stations, associated with too frequent occurrences of convective rainfall events with relatively light intensity. These discrepancies point to the need to improve the convection parametrization and geographic representation of the model.

Abstract:Climate change poses additional risks for natural and human systems including the hydrological cycle, leading to altered temporal and spatial variation of hydroclimatic conditions. This work assessed the current understanding of the dryness and wetness conditions in Sweden over the last two millenniums based on proxy and instrumental data, as well as climate model simulations and projections until the end of the twenty-first century. The assessment represents a summary of the existing literature concerning analysis of four selected indices for dry/wet conditions relating to precipitation, potential evapotranspiration (PET), and soil moisture (SPEI, PDSI [including scPDSI], SPI, and AI). SPEI considers both precipitation and PET and can show hydroclimatic conditions at different time scales. Therefore, it was chosen to summarize the past and future changes. A focus is put on dry conditions, as drought has strong influences on groundwater which is an important freshwater resource for Sweden. The millennium historical perspective reveals that the current climate is relatively wet and the future would become even wetter as a general wetting trend started some 120 years ago. However, there have been and will be large variations of both dry and wet conditions on short time scales, especially on decadal and interannual time scales. Further, the changes since the 1950s show a regional pattern with most significant wetting in the north, a slightly overall wetting in the south but a drying in central-eastern part including the island of Gotland since 1981. This pattern is broadly consistent with climate model projections for the future.
