Abstract:A rapid, simple and sensitive method was proposed for low-polar acenaphthene analysis by coupling nebulization with dielectric barrier discharge ionization (N-DBDI). The sample solution was nebulized followed by heating and converted to be gas-phase analyte molecules prior to DBDI. This boosts the collision efficiency of analyte molecules with reactive species and thus the sensitivity, and the high-velocity gas from nebulization guides ions directed to the MS inlet without deflection. The dependence of sensitivity on the operation parameters was systematically investigated. The LOD and LOQ of acenaphthene were determined to be 0.61 ng/L and 2.05 ng/L, respectively, which were superior approximately 30 folds compared to those obtained by other methods. Pa-rameters, including accuracy, precision, reproducibility and utility, were tested to further evaluate the performance of N-DBDI. Real environmental samples, including river water, initial rainwater and mineral water, were analyzed with good accuracy (93.61-103.50%) and satisfactory precision (RSD <= 8.92%). These findings suggest that the N-DBDI allows the determination of non/low-polar species at sub-pg/mL possible, and would benefit for the non/low-polar species analysis in real environmental samples.
Detection of Water Contamination Events Using Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Alternating Trilinear Decomposition Algorithm

Abstract:The method based on conventional index and UV-vision has been widely applied in the field of water quality abnormality detection. This paper presents a qualitative analysis approach to detect the water contamination events with unknown pollutants. Fluorescence spectra were used as water quality monitoring tools, and the detection method of unknown contaminants in water based on alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) is proposed to analyze the excitation and emission spectra of the samples. The Delaunay triangulation interpolation method was used to make the pretreatment of three-dimensional fluorescence spectra data, in order to estimate the effect of Rayleigh and Raman scattering; ATLD model was applied to establish the model of normal water sample, and the residual matrix was obtained by subtracting the measured matrix from the model matrix; the residual sum of squares obtained from the residual matrix and threshold was used to make qualitative discrimination of test samples and distinguish drinking water samples and organic pollutant samples. The results of the study indicate that ATLD modeling with three-dimensional fluorescence spectra can provide a tool for detecting unknown organic pollutants in water qualitatively. The method based on fluorescence spectra can be complementary to the method based on conventional index and UV-vision.
Fluoranthene Determination Based on a Rapid and Sensitive Syringe Extraction and Solid-Phase Fluorescence Technique

Abstract:A rapid and sensitive strategy was proposed for the detection of fluoranthene (FL), which is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), in water samples. In this work, syringe solid-phase extraction (SPE) combined with solid-phase fluorescence spectrometry was used to determine FL in PAHs polluted environmental samples. The fluorescence signals were directly monitored on the membrane surface after FL was enriched by syringe SPE. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method showed a linear relationship in the concentration range 2-50 & mu;g/L with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.998, and the limit of detection was 0.143 & mu;g/L. The recoveries varied from 93.47% to 109.81% in the actual samples, with the relative standard deviations (n = 3) ranging from 2.06% to 6.32%. According to the results, the established method can be applied in the field of rapid detection as it is fast, simple, portable, and highly sensitive, and has strong anti-interference. In this work, a rapid detection method was established for the determination of FL in water samples using a syringe with solid-phase fluorescence spectrometry. EuNPs-MAb Fluorescent Probe Based Immunochromatographic Strip for Rapid and Sensitive Detection of Fluorene

Abstract:Fluorene is a priority pollutant in water listed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A fluorescent probe using Eu(III)-marked polystyrene nanoparticles (EuNPs) labelled with a monoclonal antibody (MAb) was synthesized and an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on the probe (EuNPs-MAb) was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of fluorene in water samples. The concentration of fluorene was inversely proportional to fluorescence intensity values of T-line in the range 0.98-62.50 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) for quantitative detection of fluorene was 0.09 ng/mL. Recoveries of fluorene in various water samples ranged from 81.50% to 103.00% and coefficients of variation (CVs) were below 13%, which were in a good agreement with those of traditional ELISA (R-2 = 0.99). The assay can be performed within 30 min. The integrated ICA strip gave higher sensitivity and reliable reproducibility. Abstract:Polluted air, indoors, and outdoors, that contains hazardous matters or contaminants creates a hazard to general health. Ion mobility spectrometry is a very promising method for the detection of air pollutants. In this work, the experimental parameters of corona discharge ion mobility spectrometer (CD-IMS), such as the discharge distance, the drift tube temperature and the drift gas flow rate, are discussed and determined in terms of stable ionization and better reactant ion peak quality. The optimal conditions of the CD-IMS are applied to the detection of toluene, methanol and formaldehyde with the detection limits of 7.8, 11.3, and 4.6 ppbv, respectively. This provides an alternative and sensitive method for detection of air pollutants.

Abstract:The abuse of illicit drugs poses serious threats to the physical and mental health of users, as well as to the overall safety and welfare of society. In this work, we present a newly developed technique for drug detection based on mass spectrometry. This technique combines Leidenfrost desorption with low-temperature arc plasma ionization mass spectrometry. This method is applicable for detecting furanyl fentanyl in complex matrices. Key advantages of this technique include minimal sample fragmentation and high sensitivity for detection. The Leidenfrost desorption plays a pivotal role in this methodology, as it spontaneously concentrated analyte molecules during the gradual evaporation of the solvent. Eventually, these concentrated molecules are redistributed at their highest concentrations, resulting in exceptionally high sensitivity. In the course of our investigation, we achieved a remarkable detection limit of 10 pg/mL for furanyl fentanyl in pure water. Moreover, the characteristic ion peaks of furanyl fentanyl can be distinctly identified within complex matrices such as wine, beverages, urine, and lake water. This innovative drug detection technology offers several advantages, including a simple setup, cost-effectiveness, rapid detection, high sensitivity, and minimal sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Given the strong hydration propensity of fluoride ions, it is difficult to detect fluoride, especially inorganic fluoride, in aqueous samples. Resolving the issue of fluoride detection in aqueous samples is a scientific undertaking of great practical significance. Herein, we propose a new method for the sensitive and selective detection of fluoride in aqueous samples without the addition of organic solvents. The method involves surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy using 1,4-diketo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) compounds and Ag nanoparticles. The method is based on a diketopyrrolopyrrole compound linked to 1-butyl iodide (DPP1), which can sense fluoride sensitively and selectively. When DPP1 was combined with Ag NPs and reacted with tetrabutylammonium fluoride or inorganic fluoride in aqueous samples, an obvious Raman enhancement was obtained at the excitation wavelength of 633nm. This response arises because the introduction of fluoride anions into the system changes the molecular orientation of DPP1 on the Ag NP substrate from horizontal to vertical, inducing a signal enhancement in the Raman spectrum. This system can detect inorganic fluoride at concentrations as low as 1.0μmolL−1 (0.018ppm), which is far below the public health service recommended levels for drinking water (0.7–1.2ppm). Furthermore, using the proposed method, a linear response for fluoride in the concentration range of 1.0 × 10−3–1.0 × 10−6molL−1 was obtained, which makes fluoride detection possible in practical samples, such as fluoride-containing toothpaste.

Abstract:A novel method for fast determination of fluoroacetamide, a kind of organic fluorine pesticide, in blood and urine samples was developed with acetamide as an internal standard using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) after solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique. The SPME was performed by immersing a PDMS fiber of 100 microm coating thickness in a sample solution for 25 min at 70 degrees C with (CH(3)CH(2))(4)NBr to improve the extraction efficiency. After a GC sample injection, the extracted fluoroacetamide was desorbed from the fiber for 4 min to perform the GC/MS detection with a HP-PLOT Q capillary column. The analytical conditions were optimized by examining systematically, the effects of experimental parameters on the ratio of characteristic ion peak areas of fluoroacetamide to acetamide. Under optimal conditions, the ratio was proportional to the concentration of fluoroacetamide ranging from 5.0 to 90 microg/ml with a detection limit of 1.0 microg/ml. The average recovery of fluoroacetamide in blood sample was 92.2%. The established method could be used for the fast and convenient measurement of fluoroacetamide in poisoned sample.

Abstract:The Tyndall Effect assay (TEA) has been applied into colorimetric metal ion detection since 2019. However, the TEA-based sensor for pesticide detection has never been reported till now. Herein, a facile fluorescent organic nanoparticle (FON)-based sensor is firstly developed for fluorine-containing pesticide detection through ratio-metric fluorescence assay (FLA) and TEA. For FLA, the intensity of the second-order Tyndall scattering peak (STS590nm) and the fluorescence peak of the FON-based sensor would increase and remain unchanged respectively when adding bifenthrin, flufenoxuron, and diflubenzuron. The detection limits were respectively 9.34, 6.91, and 3.60 mu g/kg. For TEA, the increased STS590nm intensity displayed a bright and visible light beam. An economical, simple, and portable device was then constructed to visually monitor the analytes. The sensor was successfully used to detect the analytes in teas through FLA and TEA with the recoveries and RSD ranging from 86.27-100.00 %, and 0.00-5.68 %, respectively.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have caused widespread environmental concern in recent years. Among them, the levels of perfluoroalkane sulfonyl fluorides (PFASFs) in the environment have rarely been reported due to the lack of sensitive analytical methods. Herein, a novel liquid chromatography-microwave plasma torch ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-MPTI-MS) technique was designed for the direct analysis of PFASFs in the environment. The collaborative action of reactive oxygen species (such as hydroxyl radicals) and the elevated temperature within the ambient MPTI environment results in the replacement of the fluorine atom in sulfonyl fluoride by oxygen, leading to the detection of perfluoroalkanesulfonic acid (PFSA) ions by MS. Concurrently, LC was employed to separate other PFSAs that are present in the environment. Three PFASFs exhibited good linearity within the range of 1-500 mu g/L with R-2 > 0.994. The limit of detections (LODs) and the limit of quantifications (LOQs) were measured at 39.32-87.87 and 131.07-292.90 ng/L, respectively. The method was utilized for the direct detection of spiked perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF) in wastewater with recoveries of 77.16 to 124.81%. Our approach circumvents the laborious process of chemical derivatization and is anticipated to serve as a robust tool for determining the levels and behaviors of PFASFs in the environment.

Abstract:A competitive fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA) was developed using rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RBITC) as the model fluorescent dye conjugate monoclonal antibody (McAb) for detection of Phe and its homolog (acenaphthene, fluorene, fluoranthene, pyrene and indeno [1,2,3-cd] pyrene) in water samples. The detection range of the assay for Phe was from 2.10 to 91.95 ng/mL. The limit of detection was 1.05 ng/mL, which was approximately 2-fold lower than that of traditional ic-ELISA. Compared with traditional ic-ELISA, more than 70 min was saved because of only one immunoreaction step was needed to accomplish the assay. The average recoveries of Phe and its homolog from domestic water, contaminated water and natural water were 100.7%, 100.8% and 101.2% respectively. The accuracy and precision of the developed FLISA were validated with GC-MS/MS. There were good correlation between the two methods from tap water, contaminated water and river water samples were 0.9994, 0.9935 and 0.9967, respectively. The results suggested that the proposed FLISA could be a potential alternative format for rapid, sensitive, and quantitative detection of Phe and its homolog in environmental water.

Abstract:Ambient ionization methods are an important research area in mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Under ambient conditions, the gas flow and atmospheric pressure significantly affect the transfer and focusing of ions. The design and implementation of air flow assisted ionization (AFAI) as a novel and effective, remote sampling method for ambient mass spectrometry are described herein. AFAI benefits from a high extracting air flow rate. A systematic investigation of the extracting air flow in the AFAI system has been carried out, and it has been demonstrated not only that it plays a role in the effective capture and remote transport of charged droplets, but also that it promotes desolvation and ion formation, and even prevents ion fragmentation during the ionization process. Moreover, the sensitivity of remote sampling ambient MS analysis was improved significantly by the AFAI method. Highly polar and nonpolar molecules, including dyes, pharmaceutical samples, explosives, drugs of abuse, protein and volatile compounds, have been successfully analyzed using AFAI-MS. The successful application of the technique to residue detection on fingers, large object analysis and remote monitoring in real time indicates its potential for the analysis of a variety of samples, especially large objects. The ability to couple this technique with most commercially available MS instruments with an API interface further enhances its broad applicability. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The threat from pesticide trifluralin residues to ecological environment and public health is becoming a growing problem. Thus, rapid and sensitive detection, particularly a simple and portable detected platform for trifluralin residues, are highly desired. Here, a small organic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecule (TPETPy) is facilely synthesized and applied to detect trifluralin both in lab and in actual water systems. Based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, the emissive peak of TPETPy located at 475 nm in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water mixture (integral w = 90 %) under the excitation of 340 nm, decreases dramatically upon trace trifluralin addition and exhibits ultra-fast response (3 s), high sensitivity and selectivity, and good anti-interference ability. The fluorescence sensing correlation with the concentration of trifluralin shows good linearity in the range of 20-90 mu g L-1 with the limit of detection of 6.28 mu g L-1. Moreover, a portable smartphone-integrated detected platform based on fluorescent pattern Red/Green/Blue (RGB) values is first employed to realize the real-time and on-site quantitative fluorescent detection of trifluralin in actual water sources, featuring good accuracy and reproducibility. Hereby, this work provides not only a highly efficient trifluralin residues fluorescent probe but also a portable and straightforward operating platform to detect trifluralin pesticides quantitatively.

Abstract:A method is reported for the sensitive, simultaneous determination of mono- (MFA), di- (DFA), and trifluoroacetates (TFA) by ion chromatography (IC). These species were separated using a Dionex AS17 anion-exchange column employed with a potassium hydroxide gradient (via a Dionex EG40 eluent generator) and suppressed conductivity detection. The fluoroacetates were successfully separated from a range of inorganic and organic species likely to be present in environmental samples, in a total analysis time of 35min (including re-equilibration of the column). Detection limits for mono-, di- and trifluoroacetate were 21, 38 and 36μg/l, respectively, determined using a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, and were obtained using a sample injection volume of 50μl. Precision was less than 0.83% relative standard deviation (RSD) for replicate injections performed over a period of 30 days. The method was applied to the determination of monofluoroacetate in river water samples and also in carrot baits.

Abstract:A PVA hydrogel‐based sensing material employing an aggregation‐induced emission strategy combined with a portable laser‐induced fluorescence spectroscopy device was developed for the direct detection and quantification of silver ions in water. This method achieved high sensitivity, with detection limits as low as 1 ppb, suitable for real‐time environmental analysis. The detection and quantification analysis of silver ions is important to protect human health and improve the level of wastewater treatment. In this work, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel‐based sensing material based on an aggregation‐induced emission strategy was developed and combined with a portable laser‐induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFs) device for the direct detection and quantification of silver ions in water. Considering the requirements of environmental water analysis regarding portability, reliability, and convenience, this fluorescence turn‐on strategy was optimized accordingly to ensure the accuracy and stability of the analysis in complex natural water environmental. This sensing method showed operational excellence and good sensitivity (down to 1 ppb) and may provide a stable and convenient strategy for the on‐site, real‐time analysis of environmental water samples.

Abstract:The current study reports on a direct mass spectrometry (MS) analysis method using in-capillary dicationic ionic liquid (DIL)-based in situ dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and sonic-spray ionization (SSI). The developed method merged extraction, enrichment, ionization, and detection of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in environmental water into a single step. A microliter-scale ternary fluidic system was designed and integrated into a disposable pulled capillary, in which an imidazolium-based germinal DIL reagent activated an in situ metathesis reaction. A penetrating slug-flow microextraction (SFME) process was subsequently initiated with significantly enhanced interfacial areas and mass transfer rates for the analytes of interest, the mechanism of which was revealed by simulations. An SSI assembly was in-house built, and it enabled a Venturi self-pumping using a stream of nitrogen gas flow coaxial to the capillary under atmospheric pressure to automatically spray at the tip of the capillary. The in situ formed DIL could bind with anionic PFC analytes to generate a positively charged complex, which benefits a signal increase of 1 to 2 orders in magnitude in the positive ion mode than in the negative ion mode for most analytes. The high sensitivity allowed the measure of sub-ppb (parts per billion) levels of PFCs in the environmental water samples. The developed method is a promising protocol for MS analysis because of unprecedented ease, significantly enhanced sensitivity, and potentially high sample throughput.
Use Of Ionic Liquid-Based Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction And High-Performance Liquid Chromatography To Detect Formaldehyde In Air, Water, And Soil Samples

Abstract:A simple method, based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with ionic liquid, (IL-DLLME) was applied for the first time to simultaneously detect formaldehyde in air, water, and soil samples. The ionic liquid 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8MIM][PF6]) was utilized as the extraction solvent, and formaldehyde was detected by IL-DLLME combined with high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The versatile derivatization agent, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH), was employed in IL-DLLME to react with formaldehyde before extraction. Aided by the disperser solvent (methanol), [C8MIM][PF6] was quickly dispersed into the sample solution to extract 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (HCHO-DNPH). Parameters affecting extraction efficiency, including extraction solvent types and volumes, disperser solvent types and volumes, and formic acid volumes and salt additions, were investigated and optimized by a step-by-step procedure. The derivatization conditions of formaldehyde were optimized using orthogonal array optimization (OAD). Under the optimized conditions, the enrichment factor was 355 and the calibration curve with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.01-0.09ngmL(-1). The proposed method was then applied to the analysis of formaldehyde in air, water, and soil samples, and the recoveries of the spiked samples were 71.6-103.5% and 76.8-102.7% at concentrations of 50ngmL(-1) and 100ngmL(-1), respectively.

Abstract:Multiphoton-excited fluorescence by diode laser of continuous wave was uniquely developed for capillary electrophoresis to determine aniline species metabolized from pesticides. To achieve 2-photon excitation fluorescence, derivatization procedure was performed using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). The concentration ratio of FITC to the analytes was discussed for quantitative analysis. Several parameters that influenced separation quality of capillary zone electrophoresis were investigated, such as applied voltage, buffer pH value and concentration, etc. Under the optimized conditions, four pesticide residues were completely separated and determined within 4min, with detection limit down to zepptomole level (calculated detection volume: 45.0aL). Quantitative analyses exhibited excellent linear dynamic relationship in the range of about two orders of magnitude. The established method was further validated by testing spiked lake water sample.
