Abstract:BiVO4 is widely used in the construction of photoanodes because of its narrow band gap, sufficient power for oxygen evolution at the valence band position and strong light absorption ability. It is a promising photoelectrochemical water splitting material. However, its electron migration ability is weak, the hole diffusion distance is short, and there is a serious charge recombination problem. Here, we report a composite photoanode with excellent photoelectric properties: Fe2O3/BiVO4, which was prepared by a simple doping method using BiVO4 photoanode as substrate. The formation of heterojunction between BiVO4 and Fe2O3 promotes carrier separation and transfer, and effectively increases carrier density. Simultaneously, Fe2O3 layer provides photocorrosion protection for BiVO4, which enhances the photoelectric performance and stability of BiVO4. In addition, at 1.23 V vs. RHE, the photocurrent density of the photoanode was 1.3 mA cm−2, 3.25 times that of the pure BiVO4 electrode, and the initial potential shifted negatively by 230 mV. Fe2O3/BiVO4 photoanode shows satisfactory photocurrent density, which provides a feasible scheme for the preparation of new heterogeneous photoanode.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising way to convert solar energy into hydrogen energy, but the efficiency is limited by severe charge recombination especially in photoanodes. Herein, to reduce the charge recombination in the bulk phase and at the surface of the BiVO4 photoanodes, oxygen vacancy introduction and cocatalyst loading were realized simultaneously by one-step photocathode deposition. A unique re-BiVO4/FeOOH photoanode was obtained by the photocathodic reduction of BiVO4 in an electrolyte containing Fe3+, where the oxygen vacancies were introduced during the reduction process and the deposition of the FeOOH cocatalyst on the surface was induced by the generated OH-. When used for PEC water oxidation, the obtained re-BiVO4/FeOOH photoanode achieved an excellent PEC performance with a photocurrent density of 5.35 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was considerably higher than those for the pristine BiVO4 photoanode (2.88 mA/cm2) and the re-BiVO4 photoanode obtained by photocathodic reduction without Fe3+ (4.32 mA/cm2). After further modification with a cobalt silicate (Co-Sil) cocatalyst, the resultant re-BiVO4/FeOOH/Co-Sil photoanode exhibited a photocurrent density as high as 6.10 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus RHE and a remarkable applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.25%. The outstanding performance of the re-BiVO4/FeOOH/Co-Sil photoanode could be attributed to the coexistence of plenty of oxygen vacancies in BiVO4 reducing recombination of photogenerated carriers, the FeOOH cocatalyst interlayer as a hole-transport layer, and the outer Co-Sil cocatalyst with a high activity toward oxygen evolution. This work may open a new avenue toward multifunctional modifications of photoanode systems for efficient solar conversion.
Facile Synthesis of a Micro–Nano-Structured FeOOH/BiVO4/WO3 Photoanode with Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance

Abstract:In the realm of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water splitting, the BiVO4/WO3 photoanode exhibits high electron–hole pair separation and transport capacity, rendering it a promising avenue for development. However, the charge transport and reaction kinetics at the heterojunction interface are suboptimal. This study uses the hydrothermal–electrodeposition–dip coating–calcination method to prepare a microcrystalline WO3 photoanode thin film as the substrate material and combines it with nanocrystalline BiVO4 to form a micro–nano-structured heterojunction photoanode to enhance the intrinsic and surface/interface charge transport properties of the photoanode. Under the condition of 1.23 V vs. RHE, the photoelectric current density reaches 1.09 mA cm−2, which is twice that of WO3. Furthermore, by using a simple impregnation–mineralization method to load the amorphous FeOOH catalyst, a noncrystalline–crystalline composite structure is formed to increase the number of active sites on the surface and reduce the overpotential of water oxidation, lowering the onset potential from 0.8 V to 0.6 V (vs. RHE). The photoelectric current density is further increased to 2.04 mA cm−2 (at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The micro–nano-structure and noncrystalline–crystalline composite structure proposed in this study will provide valuable insights for the design and synthesis of high-efficiency photoelectrocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, BiVO4 films are firstly synthesized, followed by electrodepositing of Cu2O to construct BiVO4/ Cu2O heterojunction electrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. By regulating the electrodeposi-tion potential, it is possible to control that Cu2O is deposited on the surface or inside of BiVO4, which enables them n-type or p-type semiconductivity behavior for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions, respectively. Due to the built-in electric field of p-n heterojunction and the Co-Pi co-catalyst layer, the anodic photocurrent density of optimized BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode reaches 1.97 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. In the meantime, the deposition of Cu2O inside BiVO4 has reversed the arrangement of the BiVO4/Cu2O heterogeneous structure. The cathodic photocurrent density of the fabricated BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode shows - 2.9 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the unbiased solar tandem cell is fabricated using BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode and BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode, which exhibits 0.1 mA cm-2 in the photoelectrochemical cell without applying any external voltage. Abstract:Efficient charge transport and separation is of prime significance to achieve high efficiency of photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar energy conversion. In this study, we designed a novel ternary nanostructured BiVO4/ FeOx/Co(OH)2 composite as photoelectrode for enhanced PEC water splitting. Compared with pristine BiVO4, the fabricated BiVO4/FeOx/Co(OH)2 photoelectrode produced a doubled increase in photocurrent (from 0.36 to 0.72 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus RHE) with a negative shift of 390 mV in the initial potential (from 0.72 to 0.33 V). In addition, the conversion efficiency and photostability for PEC water oxidation were also improved. The elevated PEC properties of ternary composite photoelectrode were originated from the synergy of heterojunction construction and 2D cocatalyst loading that provides effective pathway for promoting charge separation as well as sufficient sites for photoelectrochemical reaction. These findings could provide an exemplary PEC model for enhanced solar hydrogen evolution of BiVO4 photoanode.

Abstract:Fe-modifiedBiVO(4) represents a promising anode materialfor the photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution reaction in neuralelectrolytes, the bottleneck reaction in PEC water splitting. To revealthe catalytic role of Fe in this composite catalytic system, herewe utilize combined theoretical and experimental techniques to identifythe location and structure of FeO x phasesand optimize the catalytic performance. By using the machine-learninginterface search method, we screen out a coherent & epsilon;-FeOOH1.5(011)/BiVO4(001) interface from thousands oflikely interface candidates. The interface has a low formation energy(0.74 J/m(2)), a narrow band structure (& SIM;1.6 eV),and desirable catalytic activity (reaction barrier & SIM; 0.64 eV)when the & epsilon;-FeOOH1.5 overlayer is two atomic layersthick. Guided by the theoretical findings, our orthogonal PEC experimentsare performed to identify the optimal synthetic conditions. The bestPEC activity reaches 5.4 mA/cm(2) (1.23 V vs reversible hydrogenelectrode) when using FeSO4 as the precursor with the chemicalbath method at 40 & DEG;C for 4 h, which is & SIM;0.9 mV/ cm(2) higher compared to the previous experiment. By analyzingtransmission electron microscopy (TEM) pictures and performing TEMsimulations, we confirm that the grass-like FeO x structures grown on BiVO4 are & epsilon;-FeOOH crystalsas predicted by theory.
BiVO4 Photoanodes Modified with Synergetic Effects between Heterojunction Functionalized FeCoOx and Plasma Au Nanoparticles

Abstract:The design and development of high-performance photoanodes are the key to efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Based on the carrier transfer characteristics and localized surface plasmon resonance effect of noble metals, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been used to improve the performance of photoanodes. In this study, a novel efficient composite BiVO4/Au/FeCoOx photoanode is constructed, and the quantitative analysis of its performance is systematically conducted. The results reveal that the co-modification of AuNPs and FeCoOx plays a synergetic role in enhancing the absorption of ultraviolet and visible light of BiVO4, which is mainly attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect induced by AuNPs and the extended light absorption edge position induced by the BiVO4/FeCoOx heterojunction. The BiVO4/Au/FeCoOx photoanode exhibits a high photocurrent density of 4.11 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE at room temperature under AM 1.5 G illumination, which corresponds to a 299% increase compared to a pristine BiVO4 photoanode. These results provide practical support for the design and preparation of PEC photoanodes decorated with AuNPs and FeCoOx.

Serial Hole Transfer Layers For A Bivo4 Photoanode With Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:In this paper, a high-performance BiVO4 photoanode deposited with serial hole transfer layers was fabricated for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in order to overcome the shortcomings of pure BiVO4 electrodes in terms of poor charge transport properties and undesirable surface water oxidation kinetics. The hole transfer layer of Fe2O3 was first deposited on the surface of pure BiVO4 to promote the hole transfer from the bulk of the semiconductor to the electrode surface (bulk/surface transfer process), and then the hole transfer layer of NiOOH/FeOOH was deposited on the surface to improve the hole transfer from the electrode surface to the electrolyte (surface/electrolyte transfer process). The results showed a remarkable improvement in PEC water splitting performance for the NiOOH/FeOOH/Fe2O3/BiVO4 photoanode. The photocurrent was up to 2.24 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which was about 2.95 times that of the pristine BiVO4 photoanode. Meanwhile, the charge transport efficiencies in the bulk ((bulk)) and the surface ((surface)) were enhanced by 1.63 and 2.62 times compared to those of the BiVO4 photoanode at 1.23 V vs. RHE, respectively. In addition, the novel photoanode was assembled with a commercial silicon PVC for self-bias PEC water splitting, and a stable photocurrent density of approximate to 2.60 mA cm(-2), corresponding to a approximate to 3.2% STH conversion efficiency, was achieved spontaneously. Our study provided a more efficient serial hole transfer strategy for achieving a BiVO4 photoanode with enhanced PEC water splitting.
Enhanced bulk and interfacial charge transfer in Fe:VOPO4 modified Mo:BiVO4 photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, its performance is greatly hindered by poor bulk and interfacial charge transfer. Herein, to address this issue, iron doped vanadyl phosphate (Fe:VOPO4) was grafted on molybdenum doped BiVO4 (Mo:BiVO4) for significantly enhancing charge transfer and oxygen evolution kinetics simultaneously. Consequently, the resultant Fe:VOPO4/Mo:BVO4 photoanode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 6.59 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) under AM 1.5G illumination, over approximately 5.5 times as high as that of pristine BiVO4. Systematic studies have demonstrated that the hopping activation energy of small polarons is significantly reduced due to the Mo doping, resulting in accelerated bulk charge transfer. More importantly, the deposition of Fe:VOPO4 promotes the interfacial charge transfer between Mo:BiVO4 and Fe:VOPO4 via the construction of V−O−V and P−O bonds, in addition to facilitating water splitting kinetics. This work provides a general strategy for optimizing charge transfer process, especially at the interface between photoanodes and cocatalysts.
Modulating built-in electric field via Bi-VO4-Fe interfacial bridges to enhance charge separation for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting on semiconductor electrodes is considered to be one of the important ways to produce clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel, which is a great help in solving energy and environmental problems. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) as a promising photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting still suffers from poor charge separation efficiency and photo-induced self-corrosion. Herein, we develop heterojunction-rich photoanodes composed of BiVO4 and iron vanadate (FeVO4), coated with nickel iron oxide (NiFeOx/FeVO4/BiVO4). The formation of the interface between BiVO4 and FeVO4 (Bi-VO4-Fe bridges) enhances the interfacial interaction, resulting in improved performance. Meanwhile, high-conductivity FeVO4 and NiFeOx oxygen evolution co-catalysts effectively enhance bulk electron/hole separation, interface water's kinetics and photostability. Concurrently, the optimized NiFeOx/FeVO4/BiVO4 possesses a remarkable photocurrent density of 5.59 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) under AM 1.5G (Air Mass 1.5 Global) simulated sunlight, accompanied by superior stability without any decreased of its photocurrent density after 14 h. This work not only reveals the crucial role of built-in electric field in BiVO4-based photoanode during PEC water splitting, but also provides a new guide to the design of efficient photoanode for PEC.

Abstract:Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is introduced as a novel cocatalyst simply grafted on BiVO4 to construct an integrated photoanode, enhancing PEC performance. The formation of FeOCl/BiVO4 heterojunction can simultaneously promote the transfer of photogenerated electrons, and improve the separation efficiency and light absorption efficiency. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), as a promising photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, suffers from poor charge separation efficiency and light absorption efficiency. Herein, iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is introduced as a novel cocatalyst simply grafted on BiVO4 to construct an integrated photoanode, enhancing PEC performance. The optimized FeOCl/BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a superior photocurrent density value of 5.23 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under AM 1.5G illuminations. From experimental analysis, such high PEC performance is ascribed to the unique properties of FeOCl, facilitating charge transport, increasing light absorption efficiency, and promoting water oxidation kinetics. Density functional theory calculations further confirm that FeOCl optimizes the Gibbs free energy of H and O‐containing intermediates (OOH*) during PEC processes, boosting the catalytic kinetics of PEC water splitting. This work presents FeOCl as a promising catalyst for constructing high efficient PEC water‐splitting photoanodes.

Abstract:Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a potential photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but it suffers from poor electron-hole separation. Here, a reproducible chemical bath deposition method was employed to immobilize well-crystallized alpha-FeOOH on the BiVO4 photoanode, resulting in a nearly unity faradaic efficiency and more than 21-fold higher solar to fuel conversion efficiency compared with pure BiVO4 photoanode. The precursor containing Fe2+ ions has been identified to be crucial for preparation of this well-crystallized alpha-FeOOH cocatalyst. Systematic studies revealed that the high efficiency and excellent stability of the alpha-FeOOH(P-II)/BiVO4 photoanode were attributed to the well-crystallized alpha-FeOOH that facilitated the charge carrier separation and transfer for PEC water splitting. Our findings thus not only demonstrated a highly stable and efficient photoanode for PEC water splitting but also provided a promising strategy for the rational design of well-crystallized alpha-FeOOH.
FeOOH/rGO/BiVO4 Photoanode for Highly Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is regarded as a potential material in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but the photocurrent of BiVO4 photoanode is much lower than its theoretical value for the high recombination of photo-induced charges and slow water oxidation kinetics. Here, we constructed a FeOOH/rGO/BiVO4 photoanode, in which rGO could enhance the photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency by transporting holes and the FeOOH could greatly accelerate the water oxidation kinetics. This novel photoanode displayed excellent PEC performance with the photocurrent density of 3.25 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE, 3.28 times higher than BiVO4 photoanode (0.99 mA cm(-2)), and long-term stability with the Faraday efficiency of similar to 98 % for 3 hours, demonstrating its great potential for PEC water splitting. The photoanode also provided a novel insight into the role of rGO to transport holes rather than electrons in improving the carrier separation efficiency.
Ni doped amorphous FeOOH layer as ultrafast hole transfer channel for enhanced PEC performance of BiVO4

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), as the potential and prospective photocatalyst, has been limited by the issue of poor separation and transfer of charge carrier for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation. Here, a significant increase of surface injection efficiency for BiVO4 is realized by the rationally designed Ni doped FeOOH (Ni:FeOOH) layer growing on BiVO4 photoanode (Ni:FeOOH/BiVO4), in which doped Ni2+ can induce partial-charge of FeOOH to serve as ultrafast transfer channel for hole transfer and transportation at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. In addition, the Ni:FeOOH/BiVO4 shows the ηsurface value of 81.6 %, which is 3.28-fold and 1.47-fold of BiVO4 and FeOOH/BiVO4, respectively. The photocurrent density of Ni:FeOOH/BiVO4 is 4.21 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, with the onset potential cathodically shifting 237 mV over BiVO4 and a long-term stability for suppressing surface charge recombination. The UPS and UV-Vis spectra have confirmed the type-II band alignment between Ni:FeOOH and BiVO4 for promoting carrier transfer. This facile and effective spin-coating method could deposit oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) availably onto photoanodes with enhanced PEC water splitting.

Abstract:A bismuth vanadate photoanode was first fabricated by the metal-organic decomposition method and particles of calcium ferrite were electrophoretically deposited to construct a heterojunction photoanode. The characteristics of the photoanodes were investigated in photoelectrochemical water oxidation under simulated 1 sun (100 mW cm(-2)) irradiation. Relative to the pristine BiVO4 anode, the formation of the heterojunction structure of CaFe2O4/BiVO4 increased the photocurrent density by about 60%. The effect of heterojunction formation on the transfer of charge carriers was investigated using hydrogen peroxide as a hole scavenger. It was demonstrated that the heterojunction formation reduced the charge recombination on the electrode surface with little effect on bulk recombination. The modification with an oxygen evolving catalyst, cobalt phosphate (Co-Pi), was also beneficial for improving the efficiency of CaFe2O4/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode mainly by increasing the stability.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BVO) is regarded as an exceptional photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but it is restricted by the severe photocorrosion and slow water oxidation kinetics. Herein, a synergistic strategy combined with a Co3(HPO4)2(OH)2 (CoPH) cocatalyst and an Al2O3 (ALO) passivation layer was proposed for enhanced PEC performance. The CoPH/ALO/BVO photoanode exhibits an impressive photocurrent density of 4.9 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 1.47% at 0.76 VRHE. This outstanding PEC performance can be ascribed to the suppressed surface charge recombination, facilitated interfacial charge transfer, and accelerated water oxidation kinetics with the introduction of the CoPH cocatalyst and ALO passivation layer. This work provides a novel and synergistic approach to design an efficient and stable photoanode for PEC applications by combining an oxygen evolution cocatalyst and a passivation layer.
New BiVO4 Dual Photoanodes with Enriched Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Splitting

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ) is a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, owing to the short carrier diffusion length, the trade-off between sufficient light absorption and efficient charge separation often leads to poor PEC performance. Herein, a new electrodeposition process is developed to prepare bismuth oxide precursor films, which can be converted to transparent BiVO4 films with well-controlled oxygen vacancies via a mild thermal treatment process. The optimized BiVO4 film exhibits an excellent back illumination charge separation efficiency mainly due to the presence of enriched oxygen vacancies which act as shallow donors. By loading FeOOH/NiOOH as the cocatalysts, the BiVO4 dual photoanodes exhibit a remarkable and highly stable photocurrent density of 5.87 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode under AM 1.5 G illumination. An artificial leaf composed of the BiVO4 /FeOOH/NiOOH dual photoanodes and a single sealed perovskite solar cell delivers a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency as high as 6.5% for unbiased water splitting.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in a pH-neutral electrolyte has attracted more and more attention in the field of sustainable energy. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a highly promising photoanode material for PEC water splitting. Additionally, cobaltous phosphate (CoPi) is a material that can be synthesized from Earth's rich materials and operates stably in pH-neutral conditions. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the charge transport ability and improve PEC performance by electrodepositing the in situ synthesis of a CoPi layer on the BiVO4. With the CoPi co-catalyst, the water oxidation reaction can be accelerated and charge recombination centers are effectively passivated on BiVO4. The BiVO4/CoPi photoanode shows a significantly enhanced photocurrent density (Jph) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE), which are 1.8 and 3.2 times higher than those of a single BiVO4 layer, respectively. Finally, the FTO/BiVO4/CoPi photoanode displays a photocurrent density of 1.39 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, an onset potential (Von) of 0.30 VRHE, and an ABPE of 0.45%, paving a potential path for future hydrogen evolution by solar-driven water splitting.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is being widely identified as a leading n-type semiconductor material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Nevertheless, achieving efficient PEC water oxidation process through BiVO4 photoanode still faces serious challenge such as severe electron-hole recombination. In this case, PEC activity of BiVO4 photoanode was enhanced by decoration of three-dimensional CoMn-layered double hydroxide (CoMn-LDH) nanoflakes on the BiVO4 surface via a facile electrodeposition process. It was suggested that CoMn-LDH played a synergistic effect on broadening internal light absorption, which accelerated injection of holes carrier to electrolyte and alleviated the electron-hole recombination, resulting in expediting faster PEC water oxidation reaction kinetics. Consequently, the photocurrent density of BiVO4/CoMn-LDH photoanode achieved 2.69 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, 2.45 times higher than the pristine BiVO4. What's more, 220 mV negative-shift took place on onset potential that was further decreased to 0.31 VRHE. The vastly enhanced PEC performance was also prioritized to those of Co and Mn single relatives. This work demonstrated that the synergistic BiVO4/CoMn-LDH as a capable candidate material, can be utilized for effective PEC water splitting.
