Abstract:A simple sealing technique for medical hollow fibers to protect the inner surface from debris or water scattered from targets is proposed. Hollow fibers are sealed with a film of fluorocarbon polymer that was selected from other polymers due to the low absorption and high mechanical strength. The transmission loss of the 20 mm-thick sealing film was 0.2 dB for Er:YAG laser light and the maximum energy density that is capable for the film was 47 J/cm(2). We found no damage on the film after a continuous laser-delivery test and a radiation test in running water.

Abstract:We propose sealing techniques for medical hollow fibers to protect the inner surface of fibers from debris or water that scatters from targets. First, hollow fibers are sealed with a film of polymer that is easily formed by use of a dipping technique. The transmission loss of 20-mum-thick sealing film was 0.2 dB for Er:YAG laser light, and the maximum energy that is available for the film was 180 mJ. Second, a sealed glass cap was applied to the output end of hollow fiber. The silica-glass cap with a wall thickness of 400 mum shows a transmission loss of 0.5 dB and was not damaged by radiation of 400-mJ energy pulses. (C) 2002 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:By using a cyclic olefin polymer (COP) as a coating material inside a silver hollow glass tube, we have fabricated various fibers with special characteristic features. By changing the thickness of COP film, the red or green pilot beam has been transmitted with relatively small losses for fibers that transmit Er:YAG or CO, laser light simultaneously or independently with small losses. Sealing of input or output end of hollow fiber by the polymer COP has been conducted to make a special output device. The process of fabrication is simply made by using dipping and curing process. Power capability and output pattern of the sealed hollow fibers have been discussed experimentally.

Abstract:A rugged hollow glass fiber is fabricated by all-liquid phase technique. A silica glass capillary is used as the substrate and a polymer film is firstly coated on the inside of the capillary to protect the glass tube from moisture. This protective coating keeps the thin-wall glass tube away from damage due to the following silver plating process. On the protective coating, a silver film is deposited by a conventional mirror plating technique. Subsequently, a polymer film is coated again on the silver film. to reduce transmission loss by employing interference effect of the polymer film. The hollow fiber fabricated by the above process was tested for use in lithotripsy with Er:YAG laser light of 2.94 mum-wavelength. In the test, the fiber is sealed with a silica glass cap and calculi in salt water were radiated by laser light with the pulse energy of 200 mJ. The calculi were broken after laser radiation of 30 minutes when the repetition rate was 10 Hz.

Abstract:A sealing cap had been proposed as an output device for hollow optical fibers in delivering laser light underwater. Properties of sealing cap were experimentally discussed when used in ablation on soft tissue for Er:YAG laser. A self-cleaning effect of the sealing cap was observed when various targets were used for different laser light power. Debris from pork fat formed a uniform oil layer on the output surface of the cap, and the oil layer is relatively transparent in Er:YAG laser light wavelength band. When the target was pork muscle, almost no debris could attach on the surface of the cap. The self-cleaning effect was more obvious when ablation was conducted underwater because of the protection of the water film between the target and the cap's surface.

Abstract:Hollow fibers with the internal silver and polymer layers have been developed for delivery of high energy pulses of infrared lasers. We adopted a cyclic olefin polymer (COP) as the dielectric layer. Since this polymer exhibits no strong absorption in the Er:YAG (2.94 mu m) or Nd:YAG (1.06 mu m) wavelength region, it is appropriate for inner dielectric of hollow fibers. We fabricated the COP-coated hollow fibers by using a liquid-flow polymer coating technique. We report our recent results on transmission properties of the polymer-coated fibers for Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers.

Abstract:The techniques for fabricating a hollow optical fiber with an inner silver layer and a cyclic olefin polymer (COP) layer have been improved to reduce the surface roughness of these two layers. The loss spectrum was thereby drastically reduced over a wide wavelength range, from visible to near infrared. Optimization of the COP layer thickness resulted in low loss simultaneously at several key laser wavelengths. Infrared hollow fiber with low loss was developed for Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers. It can also deliver green and red pilot beams with low loss. Use of this fiber in therapeutic and pilot lasers should prove useful for research and development in laser medicine. Low-loss Pilot-Beam Delivery in Hollow Optical Fiber for High-Energy Infrared Laser Light

Abstract:New techniques were established in fabricating cyclic olefin polymer-coated silver (COP/Ag) hollow optical fiber. Low-loss properties in visible region were obtained owing to the smoother layers of silver and polymer. In silver layer plating, a SnCl2 solution pre-treatment was used to sensitize the inner surface of the glass capillary. A silver layer with an RMS surface roughness of 8 nm was obtained comparing with 18 nm RMS roughness without the pre-treatment. In the liquid-phase coating of the polymer layer, an ambient air of organic solvent was used in the whole process. A smoother polymer layer with RMS roughness of 10 nm was obtained comparing with 20 nm roughness when a normal nitrogen gas-flow was used. The straight and bending loss properties for the hollow fibers have been measured by using a CO2 laser and a red laser diode at the wavelengths of 10.6 mum and 0.63 mum. The straight losses were 0.4 dB and 1 dB for the hollow fiber (700 mumphi X 1 m) made by the new developed fabrication techniques.

Abstract:We report on low-loss multiwavelength laser delivery of hollow optical fiber in a wide wavelength region, from the visible to the infrared. Improved methods of liquid-phase coating were used to fabricate the hollow fiber with inner films of a silver and a cyclic olefin polymer (COP) layer. The surface roughness of the silver layer was reduced dramatically by pretreatment on the inner glass surface with an SnCl2 solution. The COP layer roughness was also decreased by using an ambient atmosphere of tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent during the COP layer formation. Owing to the smooth surfaces, hollow fiber with optimum COP film thickness for CO2 laser light simultaneously yields low losses for a Er:YAG laser and a red pilot beam. The power durability of CO2 and Er:YAG lasers, as well as the loss properties for the pilot beam, is demonstrated.

Abstract:Vitreous film based on the structural unit R2SiO, where R is an organic group, is newly used as the reflection layer in the hollow optical fiber for CO2 laser delivery. A smooth vitreous film is formed at room temperature by using the liquid-phase coating technique. The vitreous film-coated silver hollow optical fibers achieve low-loss property for lasers in the infrared regions by properly selecting fabrication conditions. A hollow fiber with thicker vitreous film designed for CO2 laser light showed acceptable loss as an output tip. It is shown that the hollow tip is of high durability to withstand several cycles of autoclave sterilization.
Fabrication of Shatter-Proof Metal Hollow-Core Optical Fibers for Endoscopic Mid-Infrared Laser Applications

Abstract:A method for fabricating robust and thin hollow-core optical fibers that carry mid-infrared light is proposed for use in endoscopic laser applications. The fiber is made of stainless steel tubing, eliminating the risk of scattering small glass fragments inside the body if the fiber breaks. To reduce the inner surface roughness of the tubing, a polymer base layer is formed prior to depositing silver and optical-polymer layers that confine light inside the hollow core. The surface roughness is greatly decreased by re-coating thin polymer base layers. Because of this smooth base layer surface, a uniform optical-polymer film can be formed around the core. As a result, clear interference peaks are observed in both the visible and mid-infrared regions. Transmission losses were also low for the carbon dioxide laser used for medical treatments as well as the visible laser diode used for an aiming beam. Measurements of bending losses for these lasers demonstrate the feasibility of the designed fiber for endoscopic applications.

Abstract:Extremely flexible hollow fibers with 50 mu m-bore size were developed for infrared laser light delivery. The hollow fiber was inner coated with silver and a dielectric layer to enhance the reflection rate at an objective wavelength band. The silver layer was inner-plated by using the conventional silver mirror-plating technique. Concerning the fabrication parameters used up to now for 320-mu m bore-sized fibers, the target flowing rate for plating solutions was 10 ml/min. Parallelly arranged bundles of silica capillary were used to increase the cross-sectional area. To achieve the target, bundles with 4800 pieces were used for the capillary with a length of 20 cm and inner diameters of 50 mu m. The loss for the 50 mu m bore size, 10 cm length silver hollow fiber was 6 dB at the wavelength of 1 mu m. Thin dielectric layer was formed by using liquid-phase coating method for low-loss transmission of Nd:YAG and Er: YAG laser light.

Abstract:The penetration depth in water was measured for Er:YAG laser light in a high density relevant to clinical applications. Various types of focusing elements were used to guide the light efficiently. We found that the transmission distance depended strongly on the beam shape in the water. When we used a plano-convex type of focusing cap, the penetration depth was larger than that when a dome- or ball-type cap were used.

Abstract:We developed hollow fibers with polycarbonate (PC) capillaries for use as a supporting tube. The PC capillaries were prepared by using a glass-drawing technique. Hollow PC fibers are safer and more flexible than hollow glass fibers because no fragments are released when the fibers are broken in various applications. Inner coating layers of silver and cyclic olefin polymer (COP) enhanced the reflection rate at the Er:YAG laser light wavelength. Using these fibers, we attained low loss for Er:YAG laser light transmission. By adjusting the drawing temperature in the fabrication of the PC capillaries, we created a smooth inner surface and uniform PC capillaries. Abstract:Hollow fibers for CO2 laser light have been fabricated with a cyclic olefin polymer as the inner dielectric. A film of cyclic olefin polymer was coated inside the glass capillary tubing by a simple liquid-flowing process. A polymer-coated fiber with a 700-mu m bore showed a loss of 0.06 dB/m for CO2 laser light because cyclic olefin polymer has low absorption at a 10.6-mu m wavelength. Abstract:For the last years, several types of hollow waveguides have been under development and, as proved, these waveguides can deliver radiation to the target with high transmittances. The problem appears in the case of the so-called "contact mode" when, in medical applications, the end of the waveguide is in contact with the soft or hard tissues. The irradiated substance is melted or ablated and a part of this material usually destroys the inner surface of the waveguide end. To overcome these problems, the end of the hollow waveguide must be sealed. In this paper, the results with two types of sealed hollow waveguides prepared for the delivery of Er:YAG laser radiation were investigated. Sealing was conducted by a cap of short Pyrex or fused silica glass tube whose inner diameter was just slightly larger than the outer diameter of the hollow waveguide to be sealed. The transmittance of the fused silica cap connected with the hollow glass waveguide was measured to be 94 %, Pyrex glass cap transmittance was found to be slightly smaller (78 %). The damage output energy threshold of the cap material was found 750 mJ. This value was sufficiently high for using this sealed waveguides in the ophthalmology application.
