Abstract:Oil-filled microcapsules of kraft lignin were synthesized by first creating an oil in water emulsion followed by a high-intensity, ultrasound-assisted cross-linking of lignin at the water/oil interface. The rationale behind our approach is based on promoting documented lignin hydrophobic interactions within the oil phase, followed by locking the resulting spherical microsystems by covalent cross-linking using a high intensity ultrasound treatment. As further evidence in support of our rationale, confocal and optical microscopies demonstrated the uniformly spherical morphology of the created lignin microparticles. The detailed elucidation of the cross-linking processes was carried out using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and quantitative (31)P NMR analyses. The ability of lignin microcapsules to incorporate and release Coumarin-6 was evaluated in detail. In vitro studies and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis were carried out to assess the internalization of capsules into Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. This part of our work demonstrated that the lignin microcapsules are not cytotoxic and readily incorporated in the CHO cells.

Abstract:Enzyme is an important class of catalyst. However, the efficiency of enzyme-catalyzed reactions is constrained by the limited contact between the enzyme and its substrate. In this study, to overcome this challenge, lipase-loaded microcapsules were prepared from natural shellac and nanoparticles using the emulsion template method. These microcapsules can perform dual roles as stabilizers and enzyme carriers to construct a water-in-oil Pickering interfacial biocatalytic system. The results showed that the hydrolytic conversion of the microcapsules could reach 90% within 20 min, which was significantly higher than that of the traditional biphasic system. The catalytic activity was influenced by the oil-to-water volume ratio and the microcapsule content. The microcapsules remained highly catalytic efficiency even after storage for three months or seven cycles of reuse. These microcapsules were prepared without the use of any cross-linkers or harsh solvents. This green and efficient catalytic system has great application prospects in the food industry.
Residual lignin in cellulose nanofibrils enhances the interfacial stabilization of Pickering emulsions

Abstract:<p>Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) were used to prepare oil-in-water Pickering emulsions and to assess the role residual lignin in interfacial stabilization. Two LCNF fractions of similar morphology (length ∼700 nm and width ∼8 nm) and structure (polymorphism and crystallinity) were obtained by microfluidization of fibers obtained by hydrothermal treatment of wood with a recyclable organic acid. The LCNF with higher residual lignin was less hydrophilic and, correspondingly, performed better as Pickering stabilizer, producing emulsions of smaller droplet size and higher resistance to creaming. Long-term emulsion stabilization (over 40 days) was achieved with LCNF at concentrations as low as 0.24 (w/v)% based on emulsion volume. We conclude that LCNF-stabilized Pickering emulsions can be finely tuned by varying the residual lignin content, providing a rationale for LCNF selection according to lignin type and concentration as variables affecting stabilization. Complementary considerations include the possible benefits of the residual lignin in LCNF, including antioxidant and UV absorption properties.</p>

Abstract:Pickering emulsion, stabilized by amphiphilic solid particles, is a highly functional and stable system that has attracted significant research interest. Lignin, an amphiphilic biomacromolecule found widely in nature, can be transformed into nanoparticles using modern nanotechnology with great potential for use in Pickering emulsions. Despite numerous studies exploring the function of colloidal lignin particles (CLPs) in producing Pickering emulsions, there are few systematic reviews on the state-of-the-art works related to CLP-stabilized Pickering emulsions. In this review, we summarize recent advances in synthesis processes, formation mechanisms, structural characteristics and surface properties of CLPs on the stability and functionality of Pickering emulsion systems. We also highlight advanced applications of CLP-stabilized Pickering emulsions at present and propose future development directions for improving their synthesis technology using lignin as a stabilizer to enhance their properties. Our hope is that this review will serve as a roadmap for scientists engaged in research on CLP-Pickering emulsions across different scientific fields to achieve optimal material performance goals.

Abstract:Lignin-based microcapsules are extremely attractive for their biodegradability and photolysis resistance. However, the water-soluble all-lignin shells were unsatisfactory in terms of rainfall and foliar retention, and lacked the test of agricultural production practices. Herein, a novel microcapsule based on a flexible skeleton formed by interfacial polymerization and absorbed with lignin particles (LPMCs) was prepared in this study. Further analysis demonstrated that the shell was formed by cross-linking the two materials in layers and showed excellent flexibility and photolysis resistance. The pesticide loaded LPMCs showed about 98.68 % and 73.00 % improvement in scour resistance and photolysis resistance, respectively, as compared to the bare active ingredient. The foliar retention performance of LPMCs was tested in peanut plantations during the rainy season. LPMCs loaded with pyraclostrobin (Pyr) and tebuconazole (Teb) exhibited the best foliar disease control and optimum plant architecture, resulting in an increase in yield of about 5.36 %. LPMCs have a promising application prospect in the efficient pesticide utilization, by controlling its deformation, adhesion and release, an effective strategy for controlling diseases and managing plant growth was developed.

Abstract:Gigaxonin mutations cause the fatal human neurodegenerative disorder giant axonal neuropathy (GAN). Broad deterioration of the nervous system in GAN patients is accompanied by massive disorganization of intermediate filaments (IFs) both in neurons and many non-neuronal cells. With newly developed antibodies, gigaxonin is now shown to be expressed at extremely low levels throughout the nervous system. In lymphoblast cell lines derived from severe and mild forms of GAN, mutations in gigaxonin are shown to yield highly unstable proteins, thereby permitting a rapid diagnostic test for the spectrum of GAN mutations as an alternative to invasive nerve biopsy or systematic sequencing of the GAN gene. Gigaxonin has been proposed as a substrate adaptor for an E3 ubiquitin ligase, which affects proteasome-dependent degradation of microtubule-related proteins including MAP1B, MAP8 and the tubulin folding chaperone TBCB. We demonstrate that, unlike its counterpart TBCE, TBCB only moderately destabilizes microtubules. Neither TBCB abundance nor microtubule organization or densities are altered in GAN mutant fibroblasts, thus demonstrating that altered TBCB levels are not primary determinants of IF disorganization in GAN. Characteristic GAN mutant-induced ovoid aggregates of vimentin are not produced in normal fibroblasts after disrupting microtubule assembly, either by TBCE overexpression or depolymerizing drugs. Thus, IF disorganization in GAN fibroblasts is independent of TBCB and microtubule loss and must be regulated by a yet unidentified mechanism.
Disease management practices of health plans.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate how health plans manage chronic diseases. STUDY DESIGN Health plan medical directors were surveyed regarding the disease management (DM) practices of their plans. METHODS We took a stratified random sample of 65 plans, all members of the American Association of Health Plans. Forty-five plans responded. Results were weighted to be representative of the industry (including nonmember plans). Medical directors were asked to consider that they had a DM program only if 2 things were true: (1) A majority of a plan's enrollees could not be ineligible for a DM program for non-clinical reasons (eg, geographic location); and (2) a DM program had to have at least 6 of the 8 components of a DM program as defined by the Disease Management Association of America. RESULTS The 3 diseases most likely to be the focus of DM programs were diabetes, asthma, and congestive heart failure. For each of these diseases, at least one quarter of Americans were enrolled in plans offering a DM program. Medical directors perceived their DM programs to be highly effective in reducing mortality and morbidity and in improving the functional status of patients, and perceived them to be effective in lowering cost. The greatest challenge in implementing DM programs involves information technology. These results yield insights into the future of treatment of chronic disease in the United States. CONCLUSION Health plans have made a significant investment in programs to improve care for chronic illness. The almost universality of DM programs highlight the need for scholarly evaluations of their effectiveness and cost effectiveness.

Abstract:Electrostatic attractions are essential in any complex formation between the nanofibrils of the opposite charge for a specific application, such as microcapsule production. Here, we used cationized cellulose nanofibril (CCNF)-stabilized Pickering emulsions (PEs) as templates, and the electrostatic interactions were induced by adding oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (OCNFs) at the oil–water interface to form microcapsules (MCs). The oppositely charged cellulose nanofibrils enhanced the solidity of interfaces, allowing the encapsulation of Nile red (NR) in sunflower oil droplets. Microcapsules exhibited a low and controlled release of NR at room temperature. Abstract:Expression of rpsO, the gene encoding the small ribosomal protein S15, is autoregulated at the translational level by S15, which binds to its mRNA in a region overlapping the ribosome‐binding site. By measuring the effect of mutations on the expression of a translational rpsO‐lacZ fusion and the S15 binding affinity for the translational operator, the formation of a pseudoknot in the operator site in vivo is fully demonstrated and appears to be a prerequisite for S15 binding. The mutational analysis suggests also that specific determinants for S15 binding are located in very limited regions of the structure formed by the pseudoknot. It is deduced that a specific pseudoknot conformation is a key element for autoregulation.

Abstract:A concept of interfacial competitive reaction between biomineralization and alginate gelation at an all-aqueous single-emulsion droplet interface to prepare robust coconut-like capsules (inner hard wall and outer soft wall) is developed. The concept is further applied for enzyme immobilization with high encapsulation efficiency, enzyme loading, mass transfer coefficient, and recyclability. The thickness and swelling properties of the shell are simply tunable by a competitive reaction. Our platform may open a green, facile, and efficient way to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid sustainable materials with tailored compositions and structures.

Abstract:The inherent complexity and large particle size of native-state lignin are the major factors limiting its performance in high value-added materials. To realize the high-value application of lignin, nanotechnology is a promising method. Therefore, we offer a nanomanufacturing approach to produce lignin nanoparticles with uniform size, regular shape and high yield using electrospray. They are efficient in stabilizing oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions that remain for one month. Lignin has the abilities to demonstrate broad-spectrum UV resistance and green antioxidant properties in advanced materials, taking advantage of its inherent chemical characteristics. In addition, lignin has high safety for topical products according to an in vitro cytotoxicity test. In addition, the nanoparticle concentrations used in the emulsion were as low as 0.1 mg/ml, which maintained UV-resistant ability and overcame traditional lignin-based materials with unfavorable dark colors. Overall, lignin nanoparticles not only act as stabilizers at the water-oil interface but also realize the high functionality of lignin.

Abstract:Renewable polymeric microcapsules hold promise for precisely controlled release of hydrophobic drugs (curcumin) in therapeutic treatment. However, there still remains challenges to stabilize the properties of microcapsules and to enhance encapsulation efficiencies of curcumin. By using an eco-friendly ternary deep eutectic solvent here, we successfully fabricated native cellulose nanofibrils, holocellulose nanofibrils, and lignocellulose nanofibrils containing both phytates and sulfate groups. In addition, a novel type of curcumin-loaded polymeric microcapsules with diameter of 10 to 20 μm were prepared by cellulose nanofibrils as stabilizing agents in Polylactide Pickering emulsion. The Pickering emulsions stabilized by P/N/S-containing cellulose nanofibrils, holocellulose nanofibrils, and lignocellulose nanofibrils are more stable than the unmodified cellulose nanofibrils-stabilized emulsion. The Pickering emulsion stabilized by 0.2 wt% P/N/S-containing lignocellulose nanofibrils exhibited the highest emulsion layer height and the zeta potential reached -39.74 ± 2.88 mV. Moreover, the highest encapsulation efficiency of curcumin can be up to 94.80%. Antimicrobial test revealed that curcumin in the polymeric microcapsules exhibited an excellent inhibitory effect on S. aureus and the antibacterial efficiency reached 98.66%. These results provided important information on the comparison of different cellulose nanofibrils-stabilized Pickering emulsions and the application of controlled release of curcumin incorporated polymeric microcapsules in drug delivery system.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have been shown to assemble at oil/water interface and act as Pickering emulsions stabilizers. Developing a simple approach to fabricate CNFs with tunable surface properties and elucidating the influence of the surface properties of the CNFs on their emulsifying performance are of great significance and highly demanded. Herein, a facile approach, namely FeCl 3 -catalyzed formic acid hydrolysis in combination with high pressure homogenization was reported to produce CNFs using industrial Kraft pulp as raw materials. The surface properties, especially the surface wettability of the CNFs could be easily adjusted by changing the hydrolysis time. Additionally, the emulsifying performance of the CNFs and the stability of CNF-stabilized Pickering emulsions were also evaluated. The obtained CNF-stabilized Pickering emulsions demonstrated great stability under various ionic strengths ranging from 0 to 1 M NaCl and high temperature of 80 °C. This work would greatly improve the possibility of sustainable production of CNFs for practical emulsions.

Abstract:Abstract Lignin is a natural macromolecular sun blocker and provides an ideal protection material for pesticides that have poor photostability. In this study, alkali lignin/prochloraz capsules (AL-P) were prepared via one-pot ultrasonic cavitation. The results demonstrated that the produced AL-P were uniform spheres with sizes of 170–375 nm. The prochloraz encapsulation efficiency (EE) and loading capacity (LC) reached as high as 91.8 and 98.5%, respectively. Adding a small of surfactant reduced the size of the capsules, but both EE and LC were decreased. AL-P exhibited excellent extended release performance. The cumulative release of AL-P in the first 45 h was 76.1% and continuous release was maintained after 96 h. The resulting AL-P have improved photostability under UV irradiation radiation. Finally, AL-P capsules were sprayed on the mango leaves and bananas to act as preservatives, AL-P capsules had stronger rain wash resistance and were better preserved demonstrating their industrial applicability. Together, organic solvent free AL-P capsules demonstrate a method to improve the efficiency of photosensitive pesticides.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacteria responsible for cutaneous infections. Its capacity to adapt has led to the selection of methicilline-resistant strains (MRSA). These strains create specific problems in their management in dermatology (mode of contamination, treatment, added costs, increased nosocomial risks). The objective of our study was to search for morbidity of MRSA in chronic cutaneous wounds in hospital settings and assess the need of systemic antibiotic therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS We have conducted a one-year prospective study. All the patients hospitalized in the department with leg ulcers or foot wounds were included. Following local sampling for bacteriological examination, three groups were constituted: methicilline-sensitive patients with staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methicilline-resistant staphylococcus aureus patients and patients in whom these bacteria were absent. Only the first two groups were compared after studying the past history, clinical description of the wound at the start of the study, results of the infectious bacteriology and of the clinical and bacteriological evolution of the wounds. RESULTS The two groups studied were similar in number, past history, clinical aspect and therapeutic management. Only malnutrition was more frequent in patients exhibiting MRSA. There was no difference with the evolution of the wounds. CONCLUSION Our study did not reveal any difference in the morbidity of staphylococcus aureus in the cutaneous wounds whether methicilline sensitive or resistant. Systematic antibiotherapy is not justified in the absence of signs of infection.
