Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsule is a kind of composite particle with special morphology,which synthesis techniques has become one of the research hotspots in the field of nanometer science.The approaches of self-assembly,template,dendrimer and miniemulsion polymerization and their recent developments are described in detail,as well as the prospects,advantages and disadvantages of each approach.Moreover,the approach of miniemulsion polymerization has big potentials and wide prospect for the industrialization of polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules as its simple,environment-friendly and efficient preparation technique.Especially,the interfacially confined reversible addition fragmentation transfer(RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization combines the living polymerization of RAFT polymerization with the droplet nucleation mechanism of miniemulsion polymerization,the structure(size,morphology and thickness of shell) and compose(polymeric shell and functional group) of the polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules sub-micro/nanocapsule can be exactly tuned by the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization,and the polymeric nano-shell with much higher crosslinking degree can be fabricated.

Abstract:Hollow permeable polysiloxane capsules with diameters between 180 and 210 nm were firstly fabricated by consecutively cocondensed methyltrimethoxysilane and dimethyldimethoxysilane monomers onto polydimethylsiloxane and subsequently removing the templated polydimethylsiloxane by exposure to solvents. The morphology of the polymer particles was demonstrated by transmission electron micrographs (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). One possible model was firstly proposed to gain the best illustration of the capsules. Indomethacin was originally encapsulated into the capsules using a solute-co-diffusion method.

Abstract:Size-controlled, low-dispersed calcium carbonate microparticles were synthesized in the presence of the amphiphilic block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) by modulating the concentration of block copolymer in the reactive system. This type of hybrid microparticles have acid-resistant properties. By investigating the aggregation behaviors of PS-b-PAA micelles by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the mechanism of hybrid calcium carbonate formation illustrated that the block copolymer served not only as "pseudonuclei" for the growth of calcium carbonate nanocrystals, but also forms the supramicelle congeries, a spherical framework, as templates for calcium carbonate nanocrystal growth into hybrid CaCO(3) particles. Moreover, this pilot study shows that the hybrid microparticle is a novel candidate as a template for fabricating multilayer polyelectrolyte capsules, in which the block copolymer is retained within the capsule interior after core removal under soft conditions. This not only facilitates the encapsulation of special materials, but also provides "micelles-enhanced" polyelectrolyte capsules.

Abstract:A self-templated approach has been developed for the synthesis of TiO2 microcapsules with tunable size and wall thickness by heating sol-gel derived TiO2 microspheres with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in a diethylene glycol (DEG) solution. PAA plays a crucial role in the formation of microcapsules by crosslinking the surface TiO2 nanoparticles and preventing them from dissolution by DEG. Hollow microcapsules form when DEG molecules penetrate the outer layer and remove the core materials by forming soluble titanium glycolate.

Abstract:Aside from smooth and spherical microcapsules, the concept of tailoring complex polymeric microstructures is being taken a step ahead due to their great demand in various applications and fundamental studies in the subjects of microfluidics and nanotechnology. Size, shape, and morphology are of paramount importance for their functional performance and various applications. However, simple, inexpensive, versatile, and high-throughput techniques for fabricating microcapsules with controlled morphology remain a bottleneck for discoveries in the subject of polymer colloids. In this paper, we directly fulfill this need by reporting a novel approach of Pickering emulsion-templated in situ polymerization for tailoring complex polymeric microstructures comprised of a composite shell of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2 NP)-embedded poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (polyMUF) and a core of hexadecane (HD, soft template). At first, we hydrophobize TiO2 NPs by chemisorbing long-chain biobased myristic acid via a bidentate chelating complex and precisely tune their wettability by varying the grafting density of myristic acid to obtain highly stable oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion. Thereafter, we employ the optimized TiO2 NPs in the intended encapsulation strategy that enables various microstructures and morphologies with the particle diameter ranging from 5 to 20 μm. Careful manipulation of reaction parameters and copolymer components leads to novel complex microstructures: smooth, raspberry-like, partially budded, hollow, filled, single-holed, and closed-cell-like microstructures. Particle properties such as morphology, size, shell thickness, and core content are governed by the TiO2 NP content, core-to-shell ratio, copolymer component, conversion, and pH value. Based on the results of a series of control experiments, novel mechanisms for the formation of various such microstructures are proposed.

Abstract:We developed a novel strategy for the near-monodispersed crosslinked polymeric nanocapsules with controllable structure via the 'self-templating' approach by the following four steps: (i) preparation of the PVAc lattices by the emulsion polymerization of VAc; (ii) surface hydrolysis of the PVAc lattices; (iii) crosslinking the PVA segments on the surface of the surface-hydrolyzed PVAc lattices and (iv) removal of the PVAc core of the core-shell structures by being dissolved by methanol. The strategy developed was confirmed with Fourier-transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques. In the strategy developed, the particle size, the thickness and the crosslinking degree of the nanocapsules could be controlled with the lattice's size, relative molecular weight of PVAc and the crosslinking degree of the crosslinked shell.

Abstract:Hollow polysiloxane micro capsules with diameter of 200 nm were synthesized by consecutively cocondensation of bifunctional dimethyldimethoxysilane and trifunctional methyltrimethoxysilane monomers onto emulsified polydimethylsiloxane and subsequently removing the surfactant and templated-core by exposure to certain solvents. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the formation of intact hollow capsules. AFM images indicate that the hollow polysiloxane micro capsules collapsed after dried and depositing onto the mica, which is consistent with their hollow nature.

Abstract:The design, preparation and properties mining of hollow colloids are the focus of current research. However, there is an urgent need for a facile, controllable, general strategy to synthesis hollow structures with tunable cavities and diverse shell properties, but this still remains a major challenge. Herein, we implement a universal method for the synthesis of hollow structures from microtumblers to hollow nanoparticles by the strategy of polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) self-assembly cavities forming. And the strategy includes self-assembly and diffusion-controlled silication procedures. The particle diameter, cavity shapes, cavity microenvironment, and shell properties are precisely adjusted by chain structure of polymers. The random copolymers are used to fabricate hollow microtumblers while the hollow nanoparticles are obtained due to the contribution of block copolymers. Based on this facile approach, one-pot encapsulation technology of active targets (e.g., Ag, Pt, Au nanoparticles, etc) has been successfully established accompanied by the polymers. In the course of the experiment, we found that these active targets which indicating their boundless prospects in micro/nano-containers, can be in situ self-assembled in hollow microtumblers. Thus, the hollow microtumblers present high-efficiency catalytic activity as a reactors. And the reactible nature of hollow structures also allows us to investigate the fasibility of seeded polymerization in the confined cavities. In this work, we demonstrates the potential of PGMA polymer strategy as an affordable and scalable cavity-manufacturing protocol to generally fabricate hollow structures, which is expected to greatly enlarge the synthetic toolbox. And it can further enrich the theoretical exploration and technical reference of hollow materials in energy, catalysis, biomedicine and other fields.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired nanocapsules have great potential in catalysis, separation, and biomedicine. However, controlled synthesis of mussel-inspired nanocapsules with tunable particle size, designable shell thickness, and uniform morphology under mild synthesis conditions remains a great challenge. Motivated by the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), we put forward a unique self-assembly process mediated by copolymerization of dopamine (DA) and N-nonanoyldopamine (NND) and successfully applied it to the preparation of P(NND-DA) capsules with tunable shell structure. The formation mechanism of capsules was confirmed by combining the experimental technologies and theoretical calculations. This strategy provides a new platform for the preparation of mussel-inspired nanoparticles with diverse morphologies that can be applied in various fields.

Biodegradable Polymer Microcapsules Fabrication Through A Template-Free Approach

Abstract:A detailed study on the direct synthesis of biocompatible polyesters (e.g., PIA, PLGA or PCL) microcapsules and multifunctional microcapsules, which does not require any template and core removal, is presented. The technique is based on the modified self-emulsification process within the emulsion droplets by simply adding sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT or AOT) as a cosurfactant to the initial polymer solution, followed by double emulsion formation due to the coalescence of the internal water droplets. Microcapsules with tunable sizes (ranging from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers) and morphologies were then obtained through solidification of droplet shell of the double emulsion via solvent removal. In this report, we have systematically investigated the effect of experimental parameters, such as polymer and AOT concentration, polymer molecular weight on the double emulsion formation process, and the final morphologies of the microcapsules. We demonstrate that the capsules can encapsulate either hydrophobic or hydrophilic dyes during solvent evaporation. Dye-release studies show a correlation between shell thickness, capsules size, and diffusive release rate, providing insights into the shell formation and shell thickness processing. Moreover, hydrophobic nanoparticles, such as oleic-acid coated Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles and quantum dots, can also be incorporated into the walls of the microcapsules. Such functional microcapsules might find applications in the fields of controlled release, bioimaging, diagnostics, and targeting.

Abstract:A facile method was developed for the fabrication of polymer nanocapsules with organic-inorganic hybrid walls and controllable morphologies from a cross-linkable polymer, poly[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PTMSPMA). With the combination of emulsion, hydrolysis, and condensation reaction as well as the internal phase separation, cross-linked PTMSPMA nanocapsules with classic hollow structures, collapsed hollow structures with Kippah, and multi-fold morphologies could be successfully obtained by simply mixing the toluene solution of PTMSPMA with water under vigorous stirring for 48 h at different temperatures. The hydrolysis and condensation of methoxysilyl groups resulted in the phase separation of PTMSPMA inside the toluene droplets and the migration of PTMSPMA to the interface of toluene and water. The cross-linking reaction of methoxysilyl groups further fixed the interfacial phase of PTMSPMA, leading the formation of PTMSPMA nanocapsules with robust cross-linked organic-inorganic hybrid walls. Such nanocapsules with robust cross-linking structures may find potential applications for the encapsulations of many functional species.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures are ubiquitous in biological organisms and inorganic systems. Although such structures have been replicated, designed, and fabricated, they are often inferior to naturally occurring analogues. Apart from the complexity and multiple functionalities developed by the biological systems, the controllable and scalable production of hierarchically porous structures and building blocks remains a technological challenge. Herein, a facile and scalable approach is developed to fabricate hierarchical hollow spheres with integrated micro-, meso-, and macropores ranging from 1 nm to 100 μm (spanning five orders of magnitude). (Macro)molecules, micro-rods (which play a key role for the creation of robust capsules), and emulsion droplets have been successfully employed as multiple length scale templates, allowing the creation of hierarchical porous macrospheres. Thanks to their specific mechanical strength, these hierarchical porous spheres could be incorporated and assembled as higher level building blocks in various novel materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) porous polymers have demonstrated great potential in gas capture and surface catalysis as well as energy storage and conversion. Current synthesis of 2D porous polymers strongly depends on the usage of templates or an additional exfoliation process. The resultant products have HCP NSs uncontrollable morphology and structure, low structure integrity, and relatively low yield. Herein, a facile and high-throughput solvent-induced polymerization strategy to prepare ultrathin freestanding 2D porous hyper-cross-linked polymer nanosheets with large surface area and high sulfur content by cross-linking steric hexakis(benzylthio)benzene and thiophene is reported. Using this approach, the morphologies (nanosheets and nanotubes) and specific surface areas (658-1150 m(2) g(-1)) of porous hyper-cross-linked polymers can be simply tailored by adjusting the cross-linking degree between monomers. The as-synthesized porous hyper-cross-linked polymer nanotubes exhibit promising iodine capture performance, including a superior iodine uptake capacity (270 wt %) and a rapid equilibrium adsorption (within 60 min). This method will pave a new avenue for the synthesis of advanced 2D porous polymers for various applications.

Abstract:Macroporous particles that combine the property features of spherical structures and porous materials are expected to find use over micro- and macroscopic length scales from miniaturized systems such as cell imaging, drug and gene delivery to industrial applications. However, the capacity for de novo design of such materials is still limited. Here, a spontaneous process to fabricate monodisperse multifunctional macroporous particles (MMMPs) by high internal phase emulsion templating is reported. An interesting physical phenomenon involving self-emulsification and synergistic effects between nanoparticles and amphiphilic diblock copolymers is observed in this process. These MMMPs, featured with tailor-made pore structures, pH responsiveness, and magnetic response, could be used as stimuli-responsive carriers for multiple functional molecules with a high loading and releasing efficiency. This new understanding regarding the underlying phenomena that control self-emulsification behavior and synergistic action in emulsion systems provides a unique outlook and a novel approach to the design of potentially multifunctional porous materials for controllable release and delivery processes.
Microfluidic Fabrication of Novel Polymeric Core‐shell Microcapsules for Storage of CO2 Solvents and Organic Chelating Agents

Abstract:Monodispersed polymeric microcapsules loaded with CO2 solvents or chelating agents were produced by capillary microfluidics by photopolymerisation of three different UV curable materials, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), Norland Optical Adhesive (NOA) 81, and Semicosil (R) 949 UV A/B (PDMS). Polymerization of HDDA and NOA 81 started after exposure to UVA light for 5 s and was completed within a minute, as confirmed by continuous FT-IR. Corrosive aqueous solutions of tetraethylenepentamine and diisopropyl iminodiacetic acid were encapsulated with 100% efficiency into poly(HDDA) and cured NOA81 shells without any leakage during prolonged storage. Poly(HDDA) shells were mechanically more stable than cured NOA81 and PDMS shells and resistant to drying-induced shell buckling. NOA81 and PDMS capsules underwent morphological changes during freeze drying leading to the formation of dimpled and crescent-moon-shaped particles, respectively. The storage stability in a hypotonic solution and buckling resistance of PDMS shells were significantly improved by embedding carbon-based nanomaterials into PDMS matrix. The incorporation of 0.5 wt% multi-walled carbon nanotubes into PDMS matrix led to an increase in a Shore A hardness from 1.6 to 2.3. A uniform distribution of MWCNTs in the polymer network was confirmed by XRD. All fabricated shells were thermally stable up to the temperature of 300 degrees C.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse microcapsules with controllable porous surface morphologies were prepared by the in situ polymerization of melamine and formaldehyde with a template of nonionic surfactant micelles above the cloud point, inside which normal alkanes can be either encapsulated as phase change material or removed to obtain porous hollow spheres. The experimental results indicate that both the size and density of the pores on the microcapsule surface are tunable by changing the amount of core material (normal alkane) or the ratio of the polymer shell material to core material. The formation mechanism of the surface porosity was investigated by considering the polymerization temperature and the concentration of nonionic surfactants, which were used as the emulsifiers of core material droplets. The thermal gravimetry analysis proved that the microcapsules are thermally stable, and the heat treatment provided a new approach to preparing porous hollow microspheres.

Abstract:Rattle-like polymer capsules with multicores in one shell are facilely fabricated by oil-in-water Pickering emulsion polymerization for the first time. The oil phase contains hydrophobic silica nanoparticles dispersed in polymerizable monomer, styrene, and unpolymerizable solvent, hexadecane. The multicore rattle-like capsules are facilely produced after the polymerization of monomers in the oil droplets. The key point of this one-pot method lies in the nucleation of hydrophobic silica and the phase separation between the resulting polystyrene and hexadecane. The influences of the contents of silica, hexadecane, cross-linker, and stabilizer on the structure and morphology of rattle-like capsules are systematically investigated. Moreover, functionalization of the rattle-like capsules can be developed easily by varying hydrophobic nucleation nanoparticles in the oil phase. This work opens up a new route to fabricate multilevel capsules or spheres.
