Abstract:Synthesizing ring structure aviation fuels from biomass-derived platform molecules is challenging,especially for bridged ring structure aviation fuels which are typically achieved from fossil-derived chemicals.Herein,we report the synthesis of a series of ring structure biofuels in two steps by a combination of a solvent-free Michael-cyclization reaction and a hydrodeoxygenation(HDO)reaction from lignocellulose-derived 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione.These biofuels are obtained with high overall yields up to 90％,which exhibit high densities of 0.81 g cm-3-0.88 g cm-3 and high volumetric neat heat of combustion(VNHOC)values of 36.0 MJ L-1-38.6 MJ L-1.More importantly,bridged-ring structure hydrocarbons can also be achieved in two steps by a combination of a Robinson annulation reaction and an HDO reaction to afford the final products at high overall yields up to 90％.The bridged-ring structure products have comparable high densities and high VNHOC values to the best artificial fuel JP-10(0.94 g cm-3 and 39.6 MJ L-1).The results demonstrate a promising way for the synthesis of high-density aviation fuels with different fuel properties at high yields.

Abstract:The production of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones by heterogeneous catalysis has been hindered by the low catalytic activity. Herein, a series of Cu-doped metal oxide catalysts were prepared for the conversion of biomass-derived ketones to aviation biofuel precursors. Solvent-free cyclopentanone conversion via aldol condensation reached 91.1 % over Cu/Al2O3 with 100 % selectivity toward dimer and trimer oxygenated species, all of which are aviation biofuel precursors. This catalyst primarily contains Cu2O and Cu nanoparticles which are uniformly dispersed across the Al2O3 surface. From in situ DRIFTS and DFT results, the incorporation of Cu species onto Al2O3 not only increased the diversity of Lewis acidic sites, but also changed the adsorption of C = O groups, which lead to the increased aldol condensation activity of Cu/Al2O3. This study provides insight on the design of heterogeneous catalysts suitable for the solvent-free synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones.

Abstract:High-density aviation fuels are a type of hydrocarbon which are synthesized to improve the flight performance of aerospace vehicles.They have the advantages of high density,high volumetric net heat of combustion value,and can effectively improve the flight performance of vehicles such as range,speed,load,etc.With the decrease of global fossil resources and the continuous deterioration of the ecological environment,the synthesis of high-density aviation fuels from biomass has become a research hotspot.In this review,the research progress in synthesis of multi-cyclic hydrocarbon high-density aviation fuels from platform molecules and derivatives in recent years is discussed.The common C-C bond coupling methods for constructing the multi-cyclic structure are introduced,including aldol condensation reaction,alkylation reaction,aldol-hydrodeoxygenation-alkylation reaction,Diels-Alder reaction,photoinduced 2+2 cycloaddition,rearrangement reaction.The new progress in synthesis of petroleum based high-density aviation fuels or multi-cyclic hydrocarbon mixed fuels from platform molecules is listed.The properties of a large number of multi-cyclic hydrocarbon high-density aviation fuels are summarized,and the influence of molecular structure and composition on fuel properties are discussed.Introduction of the appropriate substituent groups and synthesis of multi-component fuels are the main methods to improve the comprehensive properties of fuels.Synthesis of petroleum-based high-density fuels using platform molecules is another strategy to improve the properties of fuels.Finally,the development trend of synthesis of multi-cyclic hydrocarbon high-density aviation fuels using platform molecules from biomass is prospected.

Abstract:1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane, a renewable high-density fuel, was first produced in a high overall carbon yield (79.5%) with vanillin and cyclopentanone, which can be derived from biomass. The synthetic route used in this work contains two steps. In the first step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)cyclopentanone was synthesized by aldol condensation of vanillin and cyclopentanone under the catalysis of sulphuric acid. Over the optimized condensation, a high carbon yield (82.6%) of 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was achieved at 80 oC. In the second step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was hydrodeoxygenated over the Pd/HY catalyst in cyclohexane as solvent. High carbon yields of 1 1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane (96.2%) was obtained. The polycycloalkane mixture as obtained has a density of 0.943 g mL−1 and a freezing point of −35 °C. It can be blended into conventional high-density fuels (e.g., JP-10) for rockets and missile propulsion as a potential application.

Abstract:Cycloalkanes jet fuel with high-density derived from biomass are the ideal alternative to fossil fuel. The one-pot Mannich-Michael reaction of cyclopentanone and formaldehyde followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a prospective route for the synthesis of cyclic high-density jet fuel. The synergistic interaction of pyrrolidine with acetic acid exhibited high catalytic activity in the one-pot Mannich-Michael reaction under mild conditions (50 °C, 6 h). Additionally, solvents with appropriate polarity promote proton transfer to form Mannich bases, which are subsequently decomposed to produce 2-methylenecyclopentanone as the substrate for Michael addition. Thus, a high yield of condensed products (92.3%) with 93.3% conversion of cyclopentanone was obtained via an enamine catalytic pathway. The alkali-treated Hβ25-1 combined with Pd/C effectively catalyze the HDO of condensate products. The alkali-treated Hβ25-1 with larger mesoporous volume and sufficient acid sites lead to a high yield of dicyclopentylmethane (73.6%). The density and heating value of the HDO liquid products were 0.906 g/cm 3 and 40.5 MJ/L, respectively. This work provided a novel route for high-density jet-fuel from lignocellulosic platform compounds.

Abstract:Synthesizing high-density fuels from non-food biomass is of great interest in the field of biomass conversion because they can increase the loading capability and travel distance of vehicles and aircraft as compared to conventional low-density biofuels (<0.78 g/cm3). In this work, we reported a new and facile strategy for the synthesis of high-density biofuels with polycyclic structures from lignocellulose-derived 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione and different aldehyde derivatives in two steps under mild reaction conditions, including a developed tandem reaction and a hydrodeoxygenation reaction. Theoretical approaches were used to estimate the fuel properties, which indicate that the obtained biofuels have a high density of 0.78-0.88 g/cm3 and high net heat of combustion (NHOC) values of 44.0-46.0 MJ/kg. A representative biofuel 3c was measured to have a high NHOC of 43.4 MJ/kg, which matched well with the calculated NHOC value of 44.4 MJ/kg, indicating the high accuracy of the theoretical approaches. This work is expected to provide a green strategy for the synthesis of polycyclic high-density biofuels with platform chemicals.

Abstract:The continual growth in commercial aviation fuels and more strict environmental legislations have led to immense interest in developing green aviation fuels from biomass. This paper demonstrated a controllable transformation of lignin into jet and diesel fuel range hydrocarbons, involving directional production of C8-C15 aromatics by the catalytic depolymerization of lignin into C6-C8 low carbon aromatic monomers coupled with the alkylation of aromatics, and the directional production of C8-C15 cycloparaffins by the hydrogenation of aromatics. The key step, the production of the desired C8-C15 aromatics with the selectivity up to 94.3%, was achieved by the low temperature alkylation reactions of the lignin-derived monomers using ionic liquid. The synthetic biofuels basically met the main technical requirements of conventional jet fuels. The transformation potentially provides a useful way for the development of cycloparaffinic and aromatic components in jet fuels using renewable lignocellulose biomass. Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.
Synthesis of Sustainable Aviation Biofuels Via Catalytic Hydropyrolysis of Lignin

Abstract:The exploitation of bimetallic catalysts to lignin for sustainable aviation biofuels remains a daunting challenge due to the low selectivity of aviation biofuel-range hydrocarbons and inconsistent reaction mechanism. Herein, bimetallic supported on SiO2 catalysts were prepared and their hydrodeoxygenation reactivity during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis was explored. Approximately 100% selectivity toward aviation-range hydrocarbons were achieved using eugenol as model compound under relatively mild conditions with the presence of NiMo/SiO2. For lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and the selectivity of aviation-range hydrocarbons was 21.99wt% and 70.50%, respectively. High mass balance (89.66%) was verified by scale-up experiments in a continuous flow high-pressure reactor system. The reactivity of demethoxylation reaction, dehydroxylation reaction, and benzene ring hydrogenation reaction with the presence of bimetallic catalysts were analyzed. The density functional theory calculation and verification experiments revealed the evolution pathway of aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism can provide guidance for the regulation of aviation biofuel components from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis.
A high-performance liquid biofuel produced from biomass-derived 2-cyclopentenone as an intermediate

Abstract:The productive motivation of high-energy-density fuels from sustainable feedstocks has been prompted by environmental concerns and resource scarcities. To address this demand, here, the energy-rich C10 cycloalkanes were first afforded with biomass-derived 2-cyclopentenone (2CPE). Initially, bio-based 2CPE can be converted to tricyclo-diketones by (2 + 2) cycloaddition under UV irradiation or zeolite catalysis. The UV-light photocatalysis for dimerization of 2CPE to diketol-cycloadducts disclosed outstanding advantages of cost-effectiveness and feasibility than traditional zeolite-catalyzed manner, with a yield of 53.61 % at ambient temperature for 2 h. Despite the potential for high dimer yield (77.28 %) under thermo-catalysis of H-ZSM-5 zeolite, the reaction conditions (120 °C, 18 h) were found to be suboptimal. Subsequently, diketol-cycloadducts were selectively and efficiently hydrodeoxygenated to provide cyclopentane-based hydrocarbons using a Huang-Minlon methodology with a yield of 97.04 %, where the target components were directly distilled during the reaction. Specifically, the as-synthesized C10 cycloalkane mixture originated from 2CPE possess high density of 0.96 g mL −1 , large volumetric heat net of combustion (NHOC) of 40.02 MJ L −1 , along with low freezing point of −49 °C. These properties suggest that the bio-liquid cycloalkanes can be used as a standalone high-energy fuel or as a blending agent to enhance the performance of conventional jet fuels.

Abstract:A Cu-based catalyst was developed for one-step solvent-free synthesis of aviation biofuel from biomass-derived ketones, including acetone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, and 2-pentanone. In the optimal working condition, the conversion rate of acetone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and 2-pentanone can be 100% by using Cu/Al2O3. 79.7 c% maximum carbon yield of liquid hydrocarbons with 89.5% selectivity of aviation biofuel was obtained under 1.0 MPa H2, 280 °C temperature, and 2 h-1 WHSV. The effects of calcination temperature on acidity and basicity of catalyst, as well as the valence and dispersion of Cu species, were investigated. Based on DFT calculations and in-situ DRIFTS results, the preferred adsorption of carbonyl groups and efficient dissociation of hydrogen on Cu+ increased the local concentration of H and feedstock on the catalyst surface, accelerating the rate-determining step that predominated on Cu0. The synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu+ enhanced improved the formation of aviation biofuel.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of renewable biomass platform chemicals into high-quality fuels remains challenging. A one-pot catalytic approach has been developed to synthesize various structurally defined biofuels by using Hf(OTf)4 and Pd/C for selective tandem catalysis and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) as a renewable feedstock. 2-MF first undergoes Lewis acid-catalyzed hydroxyalkylation/alkylation (HAA) condensation with carbonyl compounds to afford intermediates containing the targeted carbon skeletons of hydrocarbon or ether products, and these intermediates then undergo hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation to afford the target products, catalyzed by metal triflate+Pd/C in the same pot. The present process can produce structurally defined alkanes and cyclic ethers under mild conditions.

Abstract:High-energy-density (HED) fuels (e.g. JP-10) are of great importance in safeguarding territorial air security, since they can increase the flight range and payload of military aircrafts. To reduce the reliance on limited petroleum source, the production of HED fuel with renewable biomass feedstocks is highly appealing. But currently, most of the synthetic biofuels, due to their intrinsic ring structure, are incapable of competing with JP-10 in terms of energy density and freezing point. By emulating the structural characteristic of JP-10, we herein design and prepare a special C 16 fused tetracyclic biofuel using renewable cyclopentanone and benzoquinone as feedstocks. Key to success depends on selective dehydration of vicinal diol (dimer of cyclopentanone) over Amberlyst-15 in [Hmim]Cl. The Amberlyst-15/[Hmim]Cl system effectively suppresses the dominant pinacol-type rearrangement pathway and also exhibits good reusability for the dehydration. The hydrogen-bonding interaction between vicinal diol and imidazolium ring, as well as electrostatic force between carbocation intermediate and chloride anion contribute to the high diene selectivity. The compact ring framework gives rise to a density of 0.966 g/mL, combustion heat of 43.1 MJ/L, freezing point of ‒67 °C, and kinematic viscosity of 12.4 cSt, which are comparable to the properties of JP-10. It is expected that this as-prepared HED biofuel may potentially serve as a renewable alternative to petroleum fuel JP-10. Abstract:The access to high-density hydrocarbon fuels from biomass for the reduction of dependence on fossil resources has been a research highlight in recent years. It is well known that cycloalkanes are the components of fuels with higher energy density than straight or branched alkanes. Herein, we developed a new catalytic pattern to synthesize dimethyltetradecahydroanthracenes (DMTHA), a kind of tricyclic alkane, from biomass-derived isoprene and p-benzoquinone via a cascade Diels-Alder reaction followed by a hydrodeoxygenation reaction. Vanadium supported on titanium dioxide (V-TiO2) was applied to catalyze the cascade Diels-Alder reaction and it was disclosed that V with appropriate V4+/V5+ ratio on the surface of TiO2 could activate quinones. Experimental tests showed that the heating value of final products was up to 45.7 MJ/kg. The development of new high-density fuel molecules is a long-term trend for the future renewable and sustainable fuel energy application.

Abstract:Developing bio-fuels provides a sustainable strategy to reduce the dependence on finite fossil fuels. But biomass-based fuel molecules usually lack strained structure, resulting in undesirable density and impulse for aerospace applications. Herein, the highly strained bio-fuels are synthesized from myrcene by photoinduced [2+2] cycloaddition and hydrogenation/cyclopropanation reactions. The triplet energy transfer mechanism is revealed through theoretical calculations, triplet quenching experiments and phosphorescent measurement. The reaction conditions of photocycloaddition reaction are optimized, including the photosensitizer type and amount, solvent effect, substrate concentration, reaction temperature and light intensity. Under the optimal conditions, the yield of target photocycloaddition products reaches ca. 82.61%, which are then hydrogenated and cyclopropanized to two kinds of bio-fuels, namely PC@HG and PC@CP, respectively, which have high density of 0.836 and 0.886 g·mL-1, high impulse of 326.71 and 329.42 s, superior cryogenic properties, and good combustion properties. This work provides a feasible pathway for the preparation of highly strained bio-fuels with high density and high impulse.
Development of Intermediates for High‐Energy Content New Biomass‐Derived Jet and Diesel Fuels with a Robust Rapid Green Reaction

Abstract:Biofuel, as a renewable energy, has gained much attention due to the threat of exhaustion of fossil sources and the enormous pressure of environmental pollution. However, biofuels often suffer from low densities and high volatilities, which limit their application in important liquid transportation fuels, for example, jet and diesel fuels. At present, the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass‐derived chemicals has become a promising approach to produce high‐density jet and diesel biofuels. Herein a rapid, green Michael addition reaction is developed for constructing intermediates of a series of new high‐density biofuels with volumetric neat heat of combustion (VNHOC) values. The reactions are performed under solvent‐free conditions with commercially cheap tetrabutylammonium bromide (0.05 eq) and K3PO4·3H2O (0.03 eq) as a catalyst and a base, respectively, to afford products with good to excellent yields of 89%–99%. The theoretical calculation indicates that the VNHOC values of the potential biofuels (up to 39.06 MJ L−1) are comparable to those of most state‐of‐the‐art biofuels and commercial jet fuels that are obtained from fossil sources. This method may pave a new way of investigating high‐density biofuels with accurate structures and high‐energy contents.
Synthesis of a high-density jet fuel with creosol and formaldehyde

Abstract:A new two-step process was developed for the synthesis of jet fuel range high-density bicycloalkanes with creosol and formaldehyde, two platform compounds that can be derived from lignocellulose. In the first step, C 17 oxygenate was obtained by the phenolic condensation of creosol and formaldehyde. Among the investigated catalysts, 40% HPW/SiO 2 (a SiO 2 -loaded phosphotungstic acid catalyst with a phosphotungstic acid weight percentage of 40%) exhibited the highest activity for this reaction. Over it, a high yield (64%) and good selectivity (92%) of C 17 oxygenate were achieved under mild reaction conditions (323 K, 6 h). In the second step, the C 17 oxygenate was hydrodeoxygenated to C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkanes over Ru-based bifunctional catalysts. Under the optimized conditions, a high total yield of C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkanes (89%) was achieved. According to our measurements, the C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkane mixture as obtained had a high density (0.90 g mL −1 ), low freezing point (246.5 K), and high heat value (46.2 MJ kg −1 or 41.6 MJ L −1 ). It has potential to be used as a fuel additive to improve the volumetric heat value of current bio-jet fuels.

Abstract:This work demonstrated that bio-jet fuels can be directionally prepared from bagasse (a typical lignocellulose biomass) by integrating bio- and chemical catalysis reaction processes. This controllable transformation started with the preparation of acetone/butanol/ethanol (ABE) intermediates through the enzymolysis and fermentation of bagasse. Pretreatment of bagasse by deep eutectic solvent (DES) promoted the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation because it destroyed the structure of biomass and remove lignin in lignocellulose. Subsequently, the selective catalytic conversion of sugarcane derived ABE broth to jet range fuels was achieved through an integrated process: ABE dehydration to light olefins over the HSAPO-34 catalyst and olefin polymerization to bio-jet fuels over the Ni/HBET catalyst. The dual catalyst bed synthesis mode improved the selectively of bio-jet fuels. High selectivity of jet range fuels (83.0 %) and high conversion of ABE (95.3 %) were obtained by the integrated process.

Abstract:Biofuels are important alternative for fossil-based fuel but they have either relatively low density or high freezing point and viscosity. Here we reported a simple and efficient route to synthesis biofuel with density comparable to widely used JP-10 fuel as well as good low-temperature properties. Substituted diphenyl methane was synthesized by acid catalytic alkylation of lignin-derived phenols (phenol, anisole, guaiacol) with benzyl ether or benzyl alcohols, and MMT-K10 exhibits better activity than HPW, Amberlyst-15, and Al-MCM-41, due to the modest acid strength and open lamellar structure. High selectivity along with good-to-excellent conversion was obtained under optimized conditions regardless of different reactant used. Then the alkylated product was subjected to hydrogenation with the presence of Pd/C and HZSM-5, and interestingly, intramolecular cyclization reaction occurred to produce a large amount of perhydrofluorene as well as dicyclohexylmethane. Subsequently, biofuel with density as high as 0.93g/mL and freezing point as low as −40.0°C was obtained, which surpasses the state-of-art of biofuel reported.
