Abstract:We herein report an atom-economic approach to produce aviation fuel range hydrocarbons and aromatics from oleic acid without an added hydrogen donor. The effects of catalyst loading, reactant loading, and reaction temperature on the conversion of oleic acid and the yields of hydrocarbons and aromatics were investigated. The conversion of oleic acid was 100%, and the yield of heptadecane (the main product) can reach 71% after 80 min at 350 degrees C. Moreover, an aromatics yield of 19% was determined, which is the critical composition of the aviation fuels due to their ability to maintain the swelling of fuel system elastomers, indicating that it is a complicated reaction system including in situ hydrogen transfer, aromatization, decarboxylation, and cracking. To probe the mechanism of the conversion of oleic acid without an added hydrogen donor, variations of the reactant and products as time elapsed at different temperatures and the reaction behavior of 1-heptadecene and stearic acid at 350 degrees C in the catalysis system were investigated. The main mechanism proposed was that oleic acid was decarboxylated to 8-heptadecene, followed by the dehydrogenation of 8-heptadecene to polyenes. Then, polyenes were cyclized to aromatics by an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction, which provided hydrogen to hydrogenate the unreacted oleic acid to stearic acid. Finally, stearic acid was decarboxylated to heptadecane.

Abstract:Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is essential to decrease the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. Although many strategies have been developed to provide the linear and branched aliphatic components of SAF, few viable strategies have been demonstrated to supply the aromatic and cycloalkane fraction of the SAF at the necessary scale from bio-based feedstocks. Lignin is the largest natural source of renewable aromatic compounds; however, major challenges in deoxygenation have prevented its use as a feedstock for SAFs. Here, we report a continuous, two-stage catalytic process using molybdenum carbide to deoxygenate lignin from poplar into aromatic hydrocarbons with 87.5% selectivity toward aromatic hydrocarbons at 86% of the theoretical carbon recovery. Tier α fuel property testing indicates that the SAF-range lignin-derived aromatic compounds are likely performance-advantaged across multiple properties relative to conventional jet fuel aromatic compounds. This work demonstrates an effective approach to convert lignin into aromatic SAF blendstocks.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis remains the core technology for producing non-petroleum-based fuels. The product selectivity of F-T synthesis has been restricted by the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution. New designs of F-T catalysts and reaction pathways that can break these selectivity limitations are extremely important. Notable developments in F-T applications for producing unconventional F-T products such as light olefins (C2-C4), gasoline (C5-C11), jet fuel (C8-C16) and oxygenated organic compounds have been made. Synthesis of these high-value hydrocarbons demands the design of new F-T catalysts that can effectively tune the product distribution beyond the limits of the ASF distribution. Several reaction pathways and high-efficiency F-T catalysts with exceptional catalytic performances have been proposed. This review describes significant advances in terms of rational design of catalysts, particularly for the F-T synthesis of high-demand hydrocarbons. Our perspectives regarding the key factors for enhancing catalytic performances are discussed to open new approaches for future projects.

Abstract:Aviation fuel range C12 high-density quadricyclanes were first produced with 2,5-hexanedione (HD), a hydrogenolysis product of cellulose. First, 3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one (MCP) was selectively synthesized from the intramolecular cyclization of 2,5-HD. Under a relatively mild reaction condition, satisfactory carbon yield (97%) of MCP was obtained under the catalysis of Na2CO3. Under ultraviolet irradiation, the MCP dimerized at room temperature without using any photosensitizers or photocatalysts, affording polycyclic C12 diketones. Subsequently, the polycyclic C12 diketones were converted to a mixture of C12 polycycloalkanes with quadricyclanes as the major components under the catalysis of acidic zeolite H–Y and commercial Ru/C. The as-obtained C12 polycycloalkane mixture has a high density of 0.910 g mL–1, high volumetric heat value of 39.3 MJ L–1 , and low freezing point of 220 K. As a prospective application, it can be utilized as an additive to enhance the payload and range of aircrafts.

Abstract:A new two-step process was developed for the synthesis of jet fuel range high-density bicycloalkanes with creosol and formaldehyde, two platform compounds that can be derived from lignocellulose. In the first step, C 17 oxygenate was obtained by the phenolic condensation of creosol and formaldehyde. Among the investigated catalysts, 40% HPW/SiO 2 (a SiO 2 -loaded phosphotungstic acid catalyst with a phosphotungstic acid weight percentage of 40%) exhibited the highest activity for this reaction. Over it, a high yield (64%) and good selectivity (92%) of C 17 oxygenate were achieved under mild reaction conditions (323 K, 6 h). In the second step, the C 17 oxygenate was hydrodeoxygenated to C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkanes over Ru-based bifunctional catalysts. Under the optimized conditions, a high total yield of C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkanes (89%) was achieved. According to our measurements, the C 14 and C 15 bicycloalkane mixture as obtained had a high density (0.90 g mL −1 ), low freezing point (246.5 K), and high heat value (46.2 MJ kg −1 or 41.6 MJ L −1 ). It has potential to be used as a fuel additive to improve the volumetric heat value of current bio-jet fuels.

Abstract:Cycloalkanes jet fuel with high-density derived from biomass are the ideal alternative to fossil fuel. The one-pot Mannich-Michael reaction of cyclopentanone and formaldehyde followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a prospective route for the synthesis of cyclic high-density jet fuel. The synergistic interaction of pyrrolidine with acetic acid exhibited high catalytic activity in the one-pot Mannich-Michael reaction under mild conditions (50 °C, 6 h). Additionally, solvents with appropriate polarity promote proton transfer to form Mannich bases, which are subsequently decomposed to produce 2-methylenecyclopentanone as the substrate for Michael addition. Thus, a high yield of condensed products (92.3%) with 93.3% conversion of cyclopentanone was obtained via an enamine catalytic pathway. The alkali-treated Hβ25-1 combined with Pd/C effectively catalyze the HDO of condensate products. The alkali-treated Hβ25-1 with larger mesoporous volume and sufficient acid sites lead to a high yield of dicyclopentylmethane (73.6%). The density and heating value of the HDO liquid products were 0.906 g/cm 3 and 40.5 MJ/L, respectively. This work provided a novel route for high-density jet-fuel from lignocellulosic platform compounds.

Abstract:The exploitation of bimetallic catalysts to lignin for sustainable aviation biofuels remains a daunting challenge due to the low selectivity of aviation biofuel-range hydrocarbons and inconsistent reaction mechanism. Herein, bimetallic supported on SiO2 catalysts were prepared and their hydrodeoxygenation reactivity during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis was explored. Approximately 100% selectivity toward aviation-range hydrocarbons were achieved using eugenol as model compound under relatively mild conditions with the presence of NiMo/SiO2. For lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and the selectivity of aviation-range hydrocarbons was 21.99wt% and 70.50%, respectively. High mass balance (89.66%) was verified by scale-up experiments in a continuous flow high-pressure reactor system. The reactivity of demethoxylation reaction, dehydroxylation reaction, and benzene ring hydrogenation reaction with the presence of bimetallic catalysts were analyzed. The density functional theory calculation and verification experiments revealed the evolution pathway of aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism can provide guidance for the regulation of aviation biofuel components from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis.

Abstract:The production of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones by heterogeneous catalysis has been hindered by the low catalytic activity. Herein, a series of Cu-doped metal oxide catalysts were prepared for the conversion of biomass-derived ketones to aviation biofuel precursors. Solvent-free cyclopentanone conversion via aldol condensation reached 91.1 % over Cu/Al2O3 with 100 % selectivity toward dimer and trimer oxygenated species, all of which are aviation biofuel precursors. This catalyst primarily contains Cu2O and Cu nanoparticles which are uniformly dispersed across the Al2O3 surface. From in situ DRIFTS and DFT results, the incorporation of Cu species onto Al2O3 not only increased the diversity of Lewis acidic sites, but also changed the adsorption of C = O groups, which lead to the increased aldol condensation activity of Cu/Al2O3. This study provides insight on the design of heterogeneous catalysts suitable for the solvent-free synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones.

Abstract:1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane, a renewable high-density fuel, was first produced in a high overall carbon yield (79.5%) with vanillin and cyclopentanone, which can be derived from biomass. The synthetic route used in this work contains two steps. In the first step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)cyclopentanone was synthesized by aldol condensation of vanillin and cyclopentanone under the catalysis of sulphuric acid. Over the optimized condensation, a high carbon yield (82.6%) of 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was achieved at 80 oC. In the second step, 2,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone was hydrodeoxygenated over the Pd/HY catalyst in cyclohexane as solvent. High carbon yields of 1 1,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)cyclopentane (96.2%) was obtained. The polycycloalkane mixture as obtained has a density of 0.943 g mL−1 and a freezing point of −35 °C. It can be blended into conventional high-density fuels (e.g., JP-10) for rockets and missile propulsion as a potential application.

Ni/HZSM-5 Catalysts for Hydrodeoxygenation of Polycarbonate Plastic Wastes into Cycloalkanes for Sustainable Aviation Fuels

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods for upcycling polycarbonate (PC) plastic waste, but the development of low-cost, high-performance HDO catalysts still faces great challenges. In this work, we report that a bifunctional Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst can directly upgrade PC plastic wastes into sustainable aviation fuel ranged cycloalkanes in high yields (99.3%) with 81.2% yield of C 15 dicycloalkane under mild reaction conditions (190 Â°C, 4Â MPa H 2 ). Controlled reactions of PC and probe molecules demonstrated the conversion of PC into C 15 dicycloalkanes involves PC depolymerization by direct cleavage of C-O bonds adjacent to benzene ring and ester group, forming C 15 aromatics and C 15 monophenols at the metal sites, followed by hydrogenation of C 15 aromatics rings on metallic Ni sites and HDO of C 15 monophenols on metal-acid dual sites parallel to generate C 15 dicycloalkane. The C-C cracking mainly occurred on the tertiary carbon adjacent to the benzene ring on acidic sites of HZSM-5, thus forming C 6 ~C 9 monocyclic alkanes. The realization of this process can be attributed to the cooperation between metal sites and acid centers on Ni/HZSM-5. Besides, the metal-acid balance (MAB) in Ni/HZSM-5 significantly affected the HDO activity and product distribution. 20Ni/HZSM-5(200) with suitable MAB showed good HDO activity and excellent selectivity to C 15 dicycloalkane. In addition, the obtained catalyst was also capable of converting common real PC plastics wastes (CD disk, DVD disk and PC sheet) into cycloalkanes with the yield up to 98% and exhibited excellent stability. This approach to construct inexpensive bifunctional catalysts highlights an efficient and reliable route for HDO of PC to sustainable aviation fuel, providing a new avenue towards a circular economy.

Abstract:The extensive emission of CO2 into the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels has urged many countries to move toward decarbonized energy. Based on the concept of carbon neutrality, the European Union Emissions Trading System implemented the aviation carbon tax (ACT), which stimulated the rapid transformation in aviation fuels. To cope with the ACT and mitigate the CO2 emissions from the aviation industry, here, we present a promising route for the synthesis of precursors such as aromatics, alkyl benzenes, and naphthenes, which account for 40-50 vol % fraction of the kerosene-based aviation fuel, from waste CO2 or biomass-derived syngas. The ultra-high selectivity of single-ring aromatics (precursors for the kerosene-based aviation fuel) with a selective range of carbon chain numbers (C-8-C-12) was achieved (>80% in hydrocarbons at a reaction temperature of 275 degrees C) via the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 or CO over a bifunctional catalyst (nano-sized ZnCr2O4/Sbx-H-ZSM-5). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and reaction analysis revealed that the product distribution was controlled by thermodynamics and the formation of the aromatics followed an "aldol-aromatic" mechanism. The high selectivity of aromatics at the low reaction temperature (i.e., 275 degrees C) was attributed to the catalyst topology, the closed carbon chain aromatization reaction, and the presence of highly active oxygenated species in the hydrocarbon pool. For the first time, an asymmetric desorption behavior between the active oxygenate species and aromatic hydrocarbons over the ZnCr2O4/Sbx-H-ZSM-5 catalyst is reported with the help of integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy, which made the reaction highly selective toward aromatics. This strategy gives a carbon-neutral route for the synthesis of kerosene-based aviation fuel precursors and will reduce the burden of the carbon tax on the aviation industry.

Abstract:Biofuels are important alternative for fossil-based fuel but they have either relatively low density or high freezing point and viscosity. Here we reported a simple and efficient route to synthesis biofuel with density comparable to widely used JP-10 fuel as well as good low-temperature properties. Substituted diphenyl methane was synthesized by acid catalytic alkylation of lignin-derived phenols (phenol, anisole, guaiacol) with benzyl ether or benzyl alcohols, and MMT-K10 exhibits better activity than HPW, Amberlyst-15, and Al-MCM-41, due to the modest acid strength and open lamellar structure. High selectivity along with good-to-excellent conversion was obtained under optimized conditions regardless of different reactant used. Then the alkylated product was subjected to hydrogenation with the presence of Pd/C and HZSM-5, and interestingly, intramolecular cyclization reaction occurred to produce a large amount of perhydrofluorene as well as dicyclohexylmethane. Subsequently, biofuel with density as high as 0.93g/mL and freezing point as low as −40.0°C was obtained, which surpasses the state-of-art of biofuel reported.

Abstract:Fixing carbon dioxide (CO2) into polymeric materials is a subject of enduring interest but limited to very few efficient polymerizations. In this work, a facile Pd(OAc)(2)/(LiOBu)-Bu-t-catalyzed one-pot, three-component polymerization of CO2, bis(propargylic alcohol)s, and aryl dihalides under atmospheric pressure is developed. Linear and hyperbranched multifunctional five-membered cyclic carbonate (5CC)-based polymers with welldefined structures, high weight-average molecular weights (M-w up to 42500), and versatile properties such as aggregation-induced emission as well as chiral and porous properties are successfully produced in excellent yields (up to 96%). The reaction mechanism was well investigated via the density functional theory calculation and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, both indicating that there is synergistic reaction effect among CO2, bis(propargylic alcohols, and aryl dihalides. The polymers could be postfunctionalized by amines via catalyst-free regioselective ring-opening reaction with 100% grafting ratio. Thus, this work not only develops a new way to directly fix CO2 into polymeric materials but also provides the 5CC-based polymers with versatile properties, showing great potentials in diverse areas.

Abstract:Given a volume-fixed oil-tank, the advanced fuels with high energy density will increase the payload and range of the aircraft. Herein, we synthesized the high-energy–density liquid fuel via catalytic dimerization of norbornene by the acidic zeolites. Importantly, we reveal the relationship between the structural properties (i.e., B/L acid site ratio and porous structure) of acidic zeolites and the conversion and selectivity of dimerization, and demonstrate the mechanism and kinetics of isomerization-dimerization two-step process. Among the investigated catalysts, Hβ-25 exhibits the best activity with high norbornene conversion and acceptable dimers selectivity, which is attributed to the synergy effect of appropriate B/L acid site ratio and suitable pore size. After hydrogenation, the obtained fuel has high density (0.978 g/cm3) and high volumetric neat heat of combustion (41.49 MJ/L), which are much higher than those of widely used JP-10 fuel. This work provides a promising route to produce high-energy–density fuel for practical application.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of renewable biomass platform chemicals into high-quality fuels remains challenging. A one-pot catalytic approach has been developed to synthesize various structurally defined biofuels by using Hf(OTf)4 and Pd/C for selective tandem catalysis and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) as a renewable feedstock. 2-MF first undergoes Lewis acid-catalyzed hydroxyalkylation/alkylation (HAA) condensation with carbonyl compounds to afford intermediates containing the targeted carbon skeletons of hydrocarbon or ether products, and these intermediates then undergo hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation to afford the target products, catalyzed by metal triflate+Pd/C in the same pot. The present process can produce structurally defined alkanes and cyclic ethers under mild conditions.
