Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. The strategy provided in our study is expected to be a precious guideline for designing an ideal electrode for energy storage devices. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Tin dioxide(SnO2) nanoparticles were successfully filled into the cavity of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) by using a novel molten salt filling method at a low temperature,and the mass fraction of SnO2 is up to 60%.The SnO2@CNTs showed higher lithium ions storage capacity and better charge-discharge cycling performance than SnO2 nanoparticles,which is attributed to the unique structure of SnO2@CNTs: the CNTs buffer the destroy coming from the volume charge during the charge-discharge process,provide more space for the storage of lithium ions and enhance the conductivity of composite material.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:A hierarchical nanosheet-constructed yolk-shell TiO2 (NYTiO2) porous microsphere is synthesized through a well-designed, one-pot, template-free solvothermal alcoholysis process using tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) as the structure directing reagent. Such a yolk-shell structure with a highly porous shell and dense mesoporous core is quite advantageous as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The outer, 2D nanosheet-based porous (15 nm) shell and the nanocrystal-based inner mesoporous (3 nm) core provide a stable, porous framework, effective grain boundaries and a short diffusion pathway for Li+ and electron transport, facilitating lithium insertion/extraction. The voids between the core and the shell can not only store the electrolyte due to capillary and facilitate charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface but also buffer the volume change during the Li+ insertion/extraction. As a result, NYTiO2 demonstrates excellent Li+ capacity with outstanding cycle performance and superior rate capability at different rates for >700 cycles, retaining a 225 mA h g(-1) reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 1 C. In particular, the reversible capacity can still be maintained at 113 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 10 C. We also observe the formation of homogeneously distributed 5-10 nm Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites on the surface of the nanosheets during the discharge-charge process. The synergy of the yolk-shell structure with dual mesopores in the shell and core and the Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites endow the hierarchical NYTiO2 with high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and outstanding cycle performance.

Abstract:This paper reports the large-scale synthesis of carbon-coated tin (Sn–C) nanorods through a facile solvothermal carbonization approach by using Sn nanorods as templates and ethanol as a solvent. The as-synthesized Sn–C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The Sn–C anode, which exhibits relatively higher initial Coulombic efficiency and lithium storage capacities, is more attractive than the previously reported tin oxide or sulfide anodes. The superior performance of the Sn–C nanorods makes it a promising anode material in high-energy density batteries.

Abstract:While SnO2 is regarded as a good material for Li ion storage because of its high theoretical capacity, its microstructured powder form cannot be directly used as battery electrode because of a drastic pulverization problem and thus poor cyclic performance. Nanostructuring offers opportunities to circumvent this drawback. We report the construction of SnO2 nanoflake branches onto robust TiO2 nanotube stems. This core-branch nanostructured electrode demonstrate evidently improved Li ion storage properties compared to powders, with more stable cycling processes and higher rate capability. In this design, the TiO2 nanotube stems are realized by atomic layer deposition and offer a low-mass scaffold for the SnO2 nanoflakes and also a charge conductive path.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) has attracted extensive attention as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity, however, it suffers from the severe volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation cycling, thus leading to fast capacity fading. To overcome the drawbacks, we herein report a facile one-pot self-templating fabrication of Ti-doped SnO 2 @carbon nanotubes (Ti-SnO 2 @CNTs), via annealing the electrospun precursor nanofibers of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and stannous chloride (SnCl 2 ). Interestingly, the introduction of TBT or not can lead to the controlled fabrication of the tubular or solid fibrous structure. During the annealing process, the chemical reaction between PVDF, TEOS, and TBT in-situ leads to the formation of tubular structure, while the SnCl 2 converts into ultrafine SnO 2 nanoparticles, embedding into the PVP-derived N-doped carbon nanotubes. When employed as anode materials for LIBs, the Ti-SnO 2 @CNTs deliver high reversible capacities of 868.6/495.9 mAh g −1 at 0.2/1.0 A g −1 after 200/500 cycles, higher than those for the fibrous SnO 2 @CNFs counterpart (654.9/391.08 mAh g −1 ). The better lithium storage performance is related to the unique carbon nanotube structure and the Ti-doping, which bring improved electrical conductivity, enhanced structural stability, and shortened ion diffusion path. More importantly, we demonstrate the facile electrospinning fabrication of tubular nanostructured hybrid electrodes for high-performance energy storage applications.

Abstract:SnO 2 nanoparticle-modified Ti 3 C 2 MXene (SnO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 ) nanocomposites have been synthesized via hydrothermal method and subsequently used as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with enhanced electrochemical performance. The results of the microstructure analysis indicate that the introduction of SnO 2 nanoparticles enlarged the d-spacing of Ti 3 C 2 layers and increased the Li + storage. Meanwhile, SnO 2 nanoparticles improve the electrochemical performance based on the alloying mechanism. Electrochemical results reveal that SnO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites can greatly improve the reversible capacity compared with pure Ti 3 C 2 T x particles. Remarkably, SnO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites show outstanding initial capacity of 1030.1 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , and the capacity can remain about 360 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. The SnO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites demonstrate a stable cycle performance and high reversible capacity for lithium storage.

Abstract:Robust and fast lithium energy storage with a high capacity is much desired to promote the popularity of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Although metallic Sn exhibits attractive theoretical capacity as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), its cycle stability is restricted by severe volumetric expansion during lithiation/delithiation. Herein, a facile strategy of sequential coating and shell-to-core evolution has been proposed to synthesize a yolk-shelled Sn@void@TiO2-x composite. The optimized void space in the yolk-shelled composite exactly accommodates the volume expansion of the Sn core while not sacrifice the volumetric energy density. The solid TiO2-x outer shell can stabilize the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer during cycling and the oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ species in TiO2-x can effectively improve the electrical conductivity of the composite. As a result, the yolk-shelled Sn@void@TiO2-x electrode demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance, achieving long stable cycling performance of 785 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1C and a high-rate capacity of 480 mAh g−1 at 5C (1C = 1000 mA g−1). We believe that the facile yolk-shelled structure design strategy in this work can be extended to prepare other low melting point metals (Bi, Pb, In, Ge, etc.) for their functional applications.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) is a promising alternative material to graphite anode, but the large volume change induced electrode pulverization issue has limited its application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In contrast, titanium dioxide (TiO2) anode shows high structure stability upon lithium insertion/extraction, but with low specific capacity. To overcome their inherent disadvantages, combination of SnO2 with TiO2 and highly conductive carbon material is an effective way. Herein, we report a facile fabrication method of carbon-coated SnO2/TiO2 nanowires (SnO2/TiO2@C) using tin titanate nanowires as precursor, which are prepared by reacting SnCl2·2H2O with layered sodium titanate (Na2Ti3O7) nanowires in the aqueous solution though the ion exchange between Sn2+ and Na+. After annealing under argon atmosphere, the hydrothermally carbon-coated tin-titanate nanowires decompose, forming a unique hybrid structure, where ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded within the TiO2 substrate with carbon coating. Consequently, the SnO2/TiO2@C nanowires demonstrate excellent lithium storage capacity with high pseudocapacitance contribution, excellent reversible capacity, and long-term cycling stability (673.7/510.5 mAh/g at 0.5/1.0 A/g after 250/800 cycles), owing to the unique hybrid structure, as the well-dispersion of ultra-small SnO2 within TiO2 nanowire substrate with simultaneous carbon coating efficiently suppresses the volume changes of SnO2, provides abundant reactive sites for lithium storage, and enhances the electrical conductivity with shortened ion transport distance.

Abstract:Nanostructured SnO2/TiO2 hybrid materials can be promising anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). We herein report a novel and energy-saving photodeposition approach to fabricate SnO2/TiO2 composite nanotubes. In the photodeposition process, Sn2+ ions are oxidized to SnO2 by the photogenerated holes, thus SnO2 nanoparticles are deposited onto both the inner and outer walls of TiO2 nanotubes. This results in the formation of the SnO2/TiO2 composite nanotubes with a hierarchically porous architecture. The existence of the positive bias can enhance the photooxidation of Sn2+ ions by decreasing the hole-electron recombination, leading to the deposition of more SnO2 nanoparticles on the walls of TiO2 nanotubes. The SnO2/TiO2 composite film electrode fabricated by the photodeposition at the positive bias shows much higher lithium storage capacity than the corresponding controllable electrodes during the electrochemical cycling at a current density of 100 mu A cm(-2). The specific capacity of SnO2 in the composite film electrode photodeposited at the positive bias is estimated to be 766 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mu A cm(-2), demonstrating its prominent lithium storage performance. The as-constructed facile and energy-saving photodeposition method can be used as an efficient route to prepare other composite materials with controlled morphologies and dimensions. One-Step Synthesis of Carbon-Coated Tin Dioxide Nanoparticles for High Lithium Storage

Abstract:Carbon-coated SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal treatment. During the hydrothermal process, SnO2 was formed by the hydrolysis of fin(l) dichloride dihydrate (SnCl2 center dot 2H(2)O) in alkali solution, while sucrose was used as the carbon source to form the coated polysaccharide shell on the SnO2 nanoparticles. In the obtained carbon-coated SnO2 nanoparticles, SnO2 nanocrystals with a diameter of 4 nm were observed to be homogeneously dispersed in the particles. After calcination, the product exhibited improved lithium storage properties, as compared to pure SnO2 nanoparticles. The carbon-coated SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit 430 mAh g(-1) reversible capacities after 100 cycles and an average capacity fading of 0.2% per cycle after the 20th cycle. The good electrochemical performances of the carbon-coated SnO2 nanoparticles indicate that the obtained carbon shell can effectively increase the stability of the active materials and improve the cycling performance of oxide-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin oxide, characterized by its exceptional theoretical capacity, emerges as a highly promising alternative anode in the pursuit of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, inherent limitations in conductivity and structural integrity impede the fulfillment of its energy storage potential. Herein, sophisticated SnO2-carbon nanorods (SnO2/C NRs) derived from a tin-based metal-organic framework are developed for superior lithium storage. The ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals are embedded within a hollow and porous rod-like architecture, ensuring fast multidirectional charge transfer and well-accommodated volume variation during the lithiation/delithiation process. Moreover, the integration of the carbon matrix further promotes electron conduction and reinforces the structural integrity towards fast, efficient, and durable electrochemistry. As a result, the SnO2/C NRs electrodes demonstrate excellent long-term cyclability with a minimal capacity fading rate of 0.089 % per cycle over 500 cycles, and a commendable rate capability with a highly reversible capacity of 922.1 mAh g−1 at 3 C. This work establishes a unique and insightful paradigm for designing advanced electrode materials towards energy-dense next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Tin is a good anode material for lithium storage because of its high theoretical capacity and good conductivity, but large volume changes during the charging/discharging process lead to poor rate performance and cycling stability. In this work, by assembling ZIF-67 nanosheets on SnO2@PDA nanotubes and following a calcination process, heterostructured Sn/CoSn x (x = 1, 2) alloy anchored N-doped porous carbon nanotubes with high lithium storage performance were rationally designed and successfully prepared (Sn/CoSn x @C). The Co incorporated in CoSn x intermetallic can buffer the internal stress, and combined with the porous structure, the large volume expansion can be effectively alleviated. Besides, coating the ultrafine Sn/CoSn x crystals within one-dimensional N-doped carbon can inhibit particle agglomeration, thus enhancing cyclic stability. Moreover, benefiting from the porous tubular structure that can shorten the mass/charge transport distance, the generated abundant heterointerfaces can promote reaction kinetics, achieving improved rate capacity. Therefore, the tubular structured Sn/CoSn x @C anode shows a high reversible specific capacity of 1713.2 mAh g–1 at a current density of 100 mA g–1, a high rate performance of 1394.1 mAh g–1 at 1.0 A g–1 and 1051.3 mAh g–1 at 5.0 A g–1, and an excellent cycling stability of 444.3 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1 over 5000 cycles. These results demonstrate an effective strategy for developing high-performance metal alloy-based electrodes in the energy storage system.

Abstract:One of the major challenges in creating devices with core-shell nanotubular heterostructures has been the coating of conformal nanolayers inside the open volume of a nanoporous template. Here we show two facile assembly strategies developed, utilizing either electrochemical or solvothermal methodology, for the successful synthesis of novel SnO2@TiO2 coaxial nanotube arrays (SnO2@TNTs). Remarkably enhanced Li+ ion storage performance of the prepared nanohybrids with favorable and well-defined tubular structures is demonstrated to be derived from the synergistic effect with improved electronic conductivity and dual lithium storage mechanism, which highlights their potential as a new alternative material for electrochemical energy storage.
Facile Synthesis of CTAB Assisted Hierarchical-Structure TiO2@SnO2 for Lithium Storage

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) with high specific capacity and excellent safety performance has become potential candidate for next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the practical application of SnO2 is hindered by large volume change and particle aggregation. Herein, a type of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous titanium-based microclews composed of one-dimensional (1D) titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoribbons and SnO2 nanoparicles, is synthesized for the first time with the assistance of cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromidewere (CTAB). SnO2 nanoparticles distribute uniformly on the nanoribbons, and CTAB as growth controller plays a key role in the formation of the uniform and stable hierarchical-structure. The as-synthesized CTAB assisted hierarchical-structure TiO2@SnO2 microclews (CA-TiO2@SnO2 MCs) elelctrode demonstrates outstanding ionic conductivity due to the structure assisting efficient contact between electrode and electrolyte, with a remarkable discharge capacity of 448.3 mAh g(-)(1) after cycling for 500 times at a current density of 500 mA g(-)(1), and a capacity retention of 558.8 mAh g(-)(1) at 200 mA g(-)(1) after 400 cycles in LIBs.

Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. To improve lithium storage performances of tin-based oxide electrodes, i.e. SnO2 microspheres reinforced by Al2O3and CNTs (SnO2 -Al2O3 /CNT) are constructed using a convenient microwave-assisted method. The findings indicate that the SnO2 -Al2O3/CNT composite predominantly consisted of the rutile structure phase, with a minor presence of the orthorhombic phase. SnO2 -Al2O3/CNT electrodes demonstrate greater capacity, significantly enhanced cyclability and improved rate performance when compared to the electrodes based on SnO2 -Al2O3 and SnO2. Specifically, a sable specific capacity of 745.34 mAh/g can be maintained at 1.0 A/g, while a large specific capacity of 617.36 mAh/g can still be demonstrated at a high current density of 4.0 A/g after 100 cycles. The improved Li-storage performances may be attributed to by the significant synergistic effect among SnO2, Al2O3, CNTs, and the morphology as well.
