Abstract:Si‐based anodes with a stiff diamond structure usually suffer from sluggish lithiation/delithiation reaction due to low Li‐ion and electronic conductivity. Here, a novel ternary compound ZnSi2P3 with a cation‐disordered sphalerite structure, prepared by a facile mechanochemical method, is reported, demonstrating faster Li‐ion and electron transport and greater tolerance to volume change during cycling than the existing Si‐based anodes. A composite electrode consisting of ZnSi2P3 and carbon achieves a high initial Coulombic efficiency (92%) and excellent rate capability (950 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1) while maintaining superior cycling stability (1955 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 300 mA g−1), surpassing the performance of most Si‐ and P‐based anodes ever reported. The remarkable electrochemical performance is attributed to the sphalerite structure that allows fast ion and electron transport and the reversible Li‐storage mechanism involving intercalation and conversion reactions. Moreover, the cation‐disordered sphalerite structure is flexible to ionic substitutions, allowing extension to a family of Zn(Cu)Si2+xP3 solid solution anodes (x = 0, 2, 5, 10) with large capacity, high initial Coulombic efficiency, and tunable working potentials, representing attractive anode candidates for next‐generation, high‐performance, and low‐cost Li‐ion batteries.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of Zn2GeO4 nanorods using a simple hydrothermal process. After the coating of a carbon layer by the thermal decomposition of acetylene gas, the Zn2GeO4@C core-shell nanorods were obtained. The as-synthesized Zn2GeO4@C core-shell nanorods were used as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries, which showed good cycling and rate performance. A highly reversible specific capacity of 718 mAhg(-1) after 400 cycles was achieved at a current density of 400 mAg(-1). The core-shell nanostructures and partially amorphous and porous nanostructures helped to alleviate the volume change and enhance the conductivity during the charge/discharge process, which may be responsible for the good performance.

Abstract:The development of cathodes is critical for achieving high-performance aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs). To date, it remains a great challenge to find cathode materials with high operating potential, excellent electrochemical activity, and good structural stability. Layered transition metal compounds have received extensive attention for widespread applications in energy storage and conversion owing to their two-dimensional ion diffusion channels, superior mechanical flexibility, and highly adjustable layered structure. However, a critical bottleneck that hinders their application in aqueous ZIBs is the sluggish reaction kinetics due to the slow desolvation process at the cathode/electrolyte interface and the strong electrostatic interaction between the anion sublattice of host materials and divalent Zn2+. In this review, we comprehensively scrutinize the latest progresses and encountered challenges in the development of layered transition metal compounds as cathodes for aqueous ZIBs. Some dichalcogenides, carbides and nitrides, phosphates, and vanadates are also introduced, and their energy storage mechanisms are clarified. Much efforts and progress regarding the interlayer, defect and composite engineering to achieve high electrical conductivity, fast ion diffusion kinetics and stable structure of layered transition metal compounds are summarized.
A Composite Structure of Cu3 Ge/Ge/C Anode Promise Better Rate Property for Lithium Battery.

Abstract:Much effort has been made to search for high energy and high power density electrode materials for lithium ion batteries. Here, a composite structure among Ge, C and Cu3Ge in Cu3Ge/Ge/C materials with a high rate performance of lithium batteries has been reported. Such Cu3Ge/Ge/C composite is synthesized through the in-situ formation of Ge, C and Cu3Ge by one-pot reaction. Density function theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) suggest a higher electron mobility of the hibrid Cu3Ge/Ge/C composites through the in-situ preparation. As a result, remarkable charge rate over 300 C (fast delithiated capability) and outstanding cycling stability (≈0.02% capacity decay per cycle for 500 cycles at 0.5 C) are achieved for the Cu3Ge/Ge/C composites anode. These Cu3Ge/Ge/C composites demonstrate another perspective to explore the energy storage materials and should provide a new pathway for the design of advanced electrode materials.

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Multicomponent transition metal compounds (TMCs) composed of many cations and anions have aroused widespread concern on account of their excellent electrochemical properties. Herein, the ZnOHF nanorod anchored to honeycomb-like N-doped porous carbon composite was successfully prepared through a hydrothermal method and used as a novel anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for the first time. The specific structure can effectively improve the electronic conductivity, promote electrolyte penetration and accelerate lithium-ion diffusion. Therefore, the ZnOHF/N-C composite exhibits excellent initial discharge capacity (946.8 mAh g−1), high initial coulombic efficiency (ICE, 87.3%) and excellent cyclability (1050.2 mAh g−1 after 430 cycles). What's more, due to the high capacitance contribution of ZnOHF/N-C electrode, it has outstanding rate capability. This study provides a novel idea for the design of multi-component transition metal compound anode materials for LIBs.

One-step method synthesis of cobalt-doped GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle for enhanced lithium-ion storage performance

Abstract:The exploration of alternative anode materials to obtain the satisfactory lithium-ion storage performance is crucial for next-generation energy storage devices. Herein, the rational design of a completely new anode material is reported by a simple solid state reaction method, which follows an insertion-type lithiation mechanism, cobalt-doped GeZn1.7ON1.8 (Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8). The introduced cobalt increases the achievable capacity by more than 100%, originating from the additional space for the lithium-ion insertion. The Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle anode delivered high capacity (861.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 200 cycles) and ultralong cycling stability (2000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1 with a maintained capacity of 435 mAh g−1), which represents outstanding comprehensive electrochemical performance. Electrochemical kinetic results confirms the existence of the pseudocapacitive and the reduced lithium-ion diffusion barrier in the Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle anode. Furthermore, ex-situ XRD and XPS analyses corroborate the reversible intercalation electrochemical reaction mechanism of the Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 anode. This study offers a new vision toward designing high-performance quaternary metallic oxynitrides-based materials for large-scale energy storage applications.

Yolk-shell Structured CuSi2P3@Graphene Nanocomposite Anode for Long-Life and High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon-based anode materials enable the development of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with higher gravimetric energy densities than are currently available. However, the inherently low electronic and ionic conductivity as well as large volume expansion upon lithiation of Si hinder their use in practical applications. Here we report a cation-disordered CuSi2P3 material, synthesized using high-energy ball milling, that shows improved stability, larger capacity, and higher ionic and electronic conductivity than pure Si. When used as an anode for LIBs, CuSi2P3 demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 2069 mA h g(-1) with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 91% and a suitable working potential of 0.5 V (vs. Li+/Li). Further, after a two-step ball milling of CuSi2P3 with graphite, a yolk-shell structured carbon-coated CuSi2P3@graphene nanocomposite is formed that shows enhanced long-term cycling stability (1394 mA h g(-1) after 1500 cycles at 2 A g(-1); 1804 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles at 200 mA g(-1)) and rate capability (530 mA h g(-1) at 50 A g(-1)), surpassing those for other Cu-Si, Cu-P, and Si-P compounds or single-component Si- and P-based composites. When coupled with a LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM) cathode in a full cell, the NCM//CuSi2P3 @graphene battery exhibits a high capacity of 140 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles, demonstrating the potential of CuSi2P3 anodes for the next-generation high-performance LIBs.
In Situ Coating of Li 7 P 3 S 11 Electrolyte on CuCo 2 S 4 /Graphene Nanocomposite as a High-Performance Cathode for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:A cathode material, CuCo2S4/%Li7P3S11, is reported for all-solid-state lithium batteries with high performance. The electrical conductivity of CuCo2S4 is improved by compounding with graphene. Meanwhile, Li7P3S11 electrolyte is coated on the surface of CuCo2S4/graphene nanosheets to build an intimate contact interface between the solid electrolyte and the electrode effectively, facilitating lithium-ion conduction. Benefitting from the balanced and efficient electronic and ionic conductions, all-solid-state lithium batteries using CuCo2S4/%Li7P3S11 composite as cathode materials demonstrate superior cycling stability and rate capabilities, exhibiting an initial discharge specific capacity of 1102.25 mAh g–1 at 50 mA g–1 and reversible capacity of 556.41 mAh g–1 at a high current density of 500 mA g–1 after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that the CuCo2S4/%Li7P3S11 nanocomposite is a promising active material for all-solid-state lithium batteries with superior performances.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:CuO anode modified with intermetallic compounds is conducive to improve its electrochemical performance by enhancing conductivity and structure stability. Herein, CuO modified with Cu5Zn8 and Cu10Sn3 intermetallic compounds, denoted as ZnSn/CuO, was synthesized by etching bronze powder with ammonia solution, and its morphology can be easily controlled by adjusting the content of ammonia solution. The obtained hollow wool-ball-like ZnSn/CuO constructed with nanosheets has a high reversible capacity of 846.9 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g−1. ZnSn/CuO achieves excellent rate performance and cycling stability due to the improved conductivity and buffered volume expansion, benefiting from the existence of intermetallic compounds and unique nano-structure mechanism. Therefore, the outstanding electrochemical property and this novel synthesis route make ZnSn/CuO become a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A promising anode material consisting of bimetallic thiophosphate Znx Co1- x PS3 and CoS2 with 2D/3D heterostructure is designed and prepared by an effective chemical transformation. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the Zn2+ can effectively modulate the electrical ordering of Znx Co1- x PS3 on the nanoscale: the reduced charge distribution emerging around the Zn ions can enhance the local built-in electric field, which will accelerate the ions migration rate by Coulomb forces and provide tempting opportunities for manipulating Li+ storage behavior. Moreover, the merits of the large planar size enable Znx Co1- x PS3 to provide abundant anchoring sites for metallic CoS2 nanocubes, generating a 2D/3D heterostructure with a strong electric field. The resultant Znx Co1- x PS3 /CoS2 can offer the combined advantages of bimetallic alloying and heterostructure in lithium storage applications, leading to outstanding performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Consequently, a high capacity of 794 mA h g-1 can be retained after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 . Even at 3.0 A g-1 , a satisfactory capacity of 465 mA h g-1 can be delivered. The appealing alloying-heterostructure and electrochemical performance of this bimetallic thiophosphate demonstrate its great promise for applications in practical rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries are emerging as the next generation of high-density electrochemical energy storage systems because of the ultra-high specific capacity and ultra-low electrochemical potential of the Li metal anode. However, the uneven Li deposition on commercial Cu current collectors result in low Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) and poor cycle life. In this research, we proposed the modification of ZnFx(OH)y on Cu foils to expand the lifespan. As-generated ZnLi alloy and LiF could promote uniform Li nucleation and deposition, thus resulting in an improved Li plating/stripping CE and extended cycle life. The Li-S battery with sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathode and Li-ZnFx(OH)y@Cu anode (N/P ratio of 1.5:1) maintains 95% capacity after 60 cycles, proving the feasibility of ZnFx(OH)y@Cu for practical applications.

Abstract:The high theoretical capacity of germanium (Ge) is considerably restricted in practical applications due to the low conductivity and large volume variation range. The complex preparation process will further hinder the development of Ge anodes in lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the Ge/Cu3Ge/GeO2 composites with a continuous channel structure are composed of conductive Cu3Ge and high-capacity GeO2 dispersed in a Ge matrix, which were prepared by melt spinning, de-alloying, and oxidation in easy massive production. The optimized sample of D-Cu2Ge8-600 showed excellent cycling performance with a specific capacity of 875.7 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g–1. D-Cu2Ge8-600 also presents outstanding electrochemical performance in a full cell composed of commercial LiCoO2. The high lithium storage performance is inextricably attributed to that Cu3Ge and GeO2 allow Ge nanoparticles to be uniformly dispersed in a continuous channel structure providing volume space. Among them, the Cu3Ge phase acts as a conductive network. Concurrently, GeO2 improves the specific capacity of the whole electrode material. The easily prepared composites on a large scale could provide a novel route for future practical applications of Si- and Ge-based anode materials.

Meanwhile, Li7P3S11 electrolyte is coated on the surface of CuCo2S4/graphene nanosheets to build an intimate contact interface between the solid electrolyte and the electrode effectively, facilitating lithium-ion conduction. Benefitting from the balanced and efficient electronic and ionic conductions, all-solid-state lithium batteries using CuCo2S4/graphene@10%Li7P3S11 composite as cathode materials demonstrate superior cycling stability and rate capabilities, exhibiting an initial discharge specific capacity of 1102.25 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) and reversible capacity of 556.41 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 500 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that the CuCo2S4/graphene@10%Li7P3S11 nanocomposite is a promising active material for all-solid-state lithium batteries with superior performances.
