Abstract:In this study, centrifuge model tests were carried out to investigate the lateral response of single pile in coral sand foundation. The load–displacement relationships, pile deflections, bending moments, the changes in horizontal soil pressure, the predicted particle crushing behaviors, and p-y curves were compared and discussed in detail to study the influence of pile diameter and vertical load. Test results show that increasing diameter is the most direct and effective method to improve the horizontal bearing capacity of pile; the presence of vertical load would lead to an increase of bending moment and lateral displacement of the pile due to P -Δ effect and an improvement in soil resistance due to the vertical compression effect; the influence of particle breakage behavior of coral sand was not significant. In addition, the applicability of the existing p-y models for the coral sand foundation was systematically evaluated. According to the comprehensive analysis of the stress state of sand around pile, the evolution of soil resistance with depth was determined, which can be simulated by a power function. Based on the centrifuge test results, a modified p-y model for coral sand was proposed, and its rationality and applicability in predicting pile–soil responses were validated systematically.

Abstract:The bearing behaviors of piles in coral sand are critical for project safety due to the unique physical and mechanical properties of coral sand, such as high void ratio, high compressibility, high friction angle and easy to break. A series of model experiments were carried out in this study to evaluate the vertical behavior of single pile in coral sand foundation under cyclic dynamic load with the consideration of the influence of the amplitude of cyclic load, the static biased load and the number of cyclic. Load-settlement relationships, settlement-cyclic number relationships, pile tip and pile side resistances have been thoroughly investigated. Results showed that the load in coral sand foundation will transfer to the pile tip more obviously compared with the pile foundation in quartz sand. Therefore, the pile side resistance will be reduced while the corresponding pile tip resistance will be increased. Particularly, the weakening of side resistance mainly occurs in the first 500 cycles. The development of cyclic cumulative settlement is affected by the combination of the magnitude of static biased load and cyclic amplitude. The existence of static biased load is conducive to restrain the cyclic cumulative settlement when the amplitude of cyclic load is less than static load.

Abstract:Reviewing literature revealed that the studies on the bearing characteristics of pile foundations mainly focuses on clay, ordinary sand, loess, saline soil, and other areas. However, few studies on the bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in calcareous sand were conducted. Besides, existing traditional studies ignored the variation of soil compression modulus with depth, and the effect of void ratio on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area were not well understood. In response of these problems, this study conducted a theoretical investigation on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area. The transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation were derived based on the Pasternak foundation model and the Winkler foundation model, incorporating the heterogeneous distribution of compressive modulus with buried depth. The calculation results of the Pasternak foundation model are closer to the observed results than the Winkler foundation model. Therefore, the following research on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in the calcareous sand area adopts the Pasternak foundation model. Then, the effects of the pile length, pile diameter, pile elastic modulus, horizontal load, bending moment, and void ratio on the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area were thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, the difference between the transverse bearing characteristics of the pile foundation in a calcareous sand area and a quartz sand area was discussed. Results show that the horizontal displacement of the pile top in a calcareous sand area is greater than the quartz sand area under the same conditions.

Abstract:This paper addresses the effect of particle gradation on the lateral response of pile in coral sand foundation through numerical method. Firstly, the parameters of Hypoplastic (HP) constitutive model were calibrated by a series of laboratory tests and show obvious difference in value between fine and coarse coral sand. Subsequently, a 50 g centrifuge test and 1g model pile test were carried out to verify the numerical model and calibrated parameters. Afterward, numerical analyses were systematically conducted to investigate the influence of particle gradation, buried depth, and relative density on the lateral response of pile. The lateral load–displacement response, deflection and bending moment of pile, and soil resistance were analyzed and discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the bearing capacity of pile and soil resistance in coarse sand are greater than those in fine coral sand when the relative density is 25 % or 50 %. However, when the relative density is 75 %, the bearing capacity of pile and soil resistance in fine sand present significantly greater values than those in coarse sand under higher lateral displacement level. Moreover, the difference in lateral response of pile between coarse and fine coral sand is more significant in looser sand or shorter pile.

Model Test Study of Bearing Behavior of Small Prefabricated Piles in Soft Soil Area

Abstract:To study the horizontal and vertical bearing behavior of small prefabricated single piles and pile groups under different loads,an indoor test program for the pile models,including the horizontal static,the uplift static and the compression load test,is designed. The bearing behaviors of small prefabricated piles in soft soil area are simulated by the tests with the principle of similarity. The results show that for the 2 by 2 pile group,the horizontal,uplift and compression efficiency coefficient are 0.75,0.66 and 1.12 respectively,and for the 3 by 3 pile group,the coefficients are 0.52,0.62 and 1.06 respectively. The measured group effect coefficients are in agreement with,but slightly larger than the theoretical values. These findings indicate that the comprehensive coefficient method of pile group effect coefficient formula is applicable but relatively conservative. The results provide a reference to the engineering design for small prefabricated piles in soft soil area.

Abstract:Cast-in-place tubular pile technology is introduced. Based on the in-situ test data, the engineering property of single pile and composite foundation are specially analyzed. It is found that the cast-in-place tubular pile gives prominence to its vertical bearing capacity. At the same time, the pile can have large diameter which induced thin-shell effect that enable the pile with high horizontal resistance. Finally, the tubular composite pile foundation test indicates that it not only well meet engineering requirement in settlement and bearing capacity, but also has the advantages of good quality, low cost etc..

Abstract:A series of consolidated drained (CD) triaxial compression tests on sand with dilatancy is conducted to obtain mechanical parameters. The behaviors of large diameter monopile foundation in offshore under horizontal loading are analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element model with the finite element software ABAQUS. A lot of parameters, like stress path, friction angle, dilatancy angle and the characteristics of soil-pile surface, are taken into consideration to study the soil structure behavior, which is verified with the centrifuge modeling. Then, a reasonable finite element computational model of large diameter monopile foundation under horizontal loading including the parameter selection method of this model is established. Besides, the deformation is proposed as the control criterion to determine the horizontal bearing capacity of monopile foundation for the offshore wind turbine. With that, the pros and cons of existing methods for analyzing horizontal bearing capacity and deformation of pile foundation are discussed. Finally, it is suggested to determine the critical embedded length of monopile foundation by numerical analysis.
Comparative Study on Seismic Response of Pile Group Foundation in Coral Sand and Fujian Sand

Abstract:The physical and mechanical properties of coral sand are quite different from those of common terrestrial sands due to the special marine biogenesis. Shaking table tests of three-story structures with nine-pile foundation in coral sand and Fujian sand were carried out in order to study the dynamic response characteristics of pile-soil-structure system in coral sand under earthquake. The influence of shaking intensity on the dynamic response of the system was taken into consideration. The results indicated that the peak value of the excess pore pressure ratio of coral sand was smaller than that of Fujian sand under two kinds of shaking intensities; moreover, the development speed of excess pore pressure ratio of coral sand was smaller than that of Fujian sand. The liquefaction of coral sand was more difficult than Fujian sand under the same relative density and similar grain-size distribution. The horizontal displacement, settlement, column bending moment, and pile bending moment of coral sand were smaller than those of Fujian sand, respectively. The magnification effect of column bending moment of buildings in coral sand was less than that in Fujian sand with increasing shaking intensity. This study can provide some supports for the seismic design of coral reef projects.

Abstract:Mono-pile foundations have been widely used for offshore wind turbines principally due to their convenient construction and cost-effective nature. So far, little attention has been paid to large diameter "semi-rigid" piles that have distinct behaviours from flexible or ideally rigid piles. This paper presents a series of centrifuge model tests to study the deforming and bearing characteristics of a 5.9 dia. semi-rigid pile under lateral loadings in kaolin clay. For monotonic loading, a modified p-y curve analysis model considering rotational soil flow near the rotation centre of pile was proposed, highlighting the limitation of classic plane-strain based plasticity models to evaluate the ultimate lateral pile-soil resistance. For cyclic loading, a strong correlation between the degree of soil degradation and cyclic load amplitude was identified. Besides, a degradation factor model, accounting for various cyclic stress levels and soil depths, was proposed, which can be used to assess the accumulative displacement of semi-rigid piles under cyclic loadings in soft clay.

Abstract:Abstract The bearing characteristics of single steel pipe pile in calcareous sands foundation and quartz sands foundation with different relative compactness are compared and analyzed by the model tests of single steel pipe pile in two kinds of soil media in laboratory. The test results show that the bearing behavior of single steel pipe pile is quite different between calcareous sands and quartz sands. Pile end forms of single steel pipe pile have little influence on the bearing capacity, especially in the sands foundation with high relative compactness. Increasing the relative compactness of foundation soil has obvious effect on improving the bearing capacity of single steel pipe pile. But the bearing capacity of single steel pipe pile in calcareous sands is much lower than that in quartz sands in the same relative compactness. The lateral friction resistance of single steel pipe pile in quartz sands is much larger than that of calcareous sands. The lateral friction resistance of single steel pipe pile in calcareous sands does not increase significantly with the increase of relative compactness; But the lateral friction resistance of single steel pipe pile in quartz sands increases significantly with the increase of relative compactness. In calcareous sands foundation, the ratio of load sharing on the side of single steel pipe pile is small, and the load on the pile top is mainly borne by the soil at the pile end, and it is manifested as friction end bearing pile. In the quartz sands foundation, the axial force of the pile decreases rapidly along the pile. And the faster the axial force of the single pile of the steel pipe is decayed with the smaller compactness of the quartz sands..

Abstract:The construction of islands and reef engineering structures in marine environments has been a hot topic in recent years, and calcareous sand, which possesses unique physical properties, is widely distributed on islands and reefs. Due to the properties of calcareous sand, engineering problems such as pile slipping while driving and a low bearing capacity during service can occur. To address the key problem of pile‒soil interactions in calcareous sand foundations, laboratory model and in situ tests were conducted, accounting for factors such as impact energy, relative density, pile-forming method, and pile aspect ratio. First, the penetration mechanism of hammered piles in calcareous sand was studied. Then, the differences in vertical bearing characteristics between hammered and pre-embedded piles under different conditions were explored. The pile driving test results showed that a higher impact energy and lower relative density are more conducive to pile sinking. Moreover, as the number of hammer drops and dynamic penetration resistance increase with increasing burial depth, the pile tip resistance is the main factor limiting pile penetration in calcareous sand. The vertical static loading test revealed that particle breakage accelerates soil redistribution around the pile and that compaction enhances the bearing capacity of the pile. The pile aspect ratio, relative density and pile-forming method also play major roles in the vertical bearing capacity of piles in calcareous sand. In addition, the skin friction of a pile rapidly increases to the ultimate value along a multisegment trend of polyline functions. Similarly, the pile tip resistance rapidly increases at the initial loading stage, exhibiting the behavior of an end-bearing pile. The in situ test results indicated that the pile penetration depth in coral calcareous sand is an important factor affecting the bearing capacity.

Bearing Behavior of Cast-in-Place Expansive Concrete Pile in Coral Sand under Vertical Loading

Abstract:The low side friction of piles in coral sand results in the low bearing capacity of foundations. In this paper, expansive concrete pile is utilized to improve the bearing capacity of pile foundations in coral sand. Both model tests and numerical simulation are performed to reveal the bearing mechanism of expansive concrete pile in coral sand. Results showed that the lateral earth pressure near pile increases obviously and the side friction of piles is improved, after adding expansion agent to the concrete. The horizontal linear expansion is 1.11% and the bearing capacity increased 41% for the pile, when 25% expansion agent is added. Results in finite element numerical simulation also show that ultimate bearing capacity increases with the increase of the linear expansion ratio. Besides, the area for obvious increase in side friction is below the surface of soil about three times the pile diameter, and the expansion leads to a high side friction sharing of the pile. Therefore, the cast-in-place expansive concrete pile is effective in improving the bearing capacity of piles in coral sand.

Abstract:Coral sand foundation formed by hydraulic fill often faces the problem of poor bearing capacity. This paper proposed for the first time to apply CFG pile composite foundation to coral sand sites to verify the feasibility of this scheme and understand its mechanical characteristics. Firstly, taking on-site coral sand as the research object, a pile sand interface shear test was conducted to clarify the mechanism of pile side friction. At the same time, the ultimate bearing capacity of CFG pile and its composite foundation was measured through in-situ static load tests. Then, based on the strength parameters of the pile sand interface revealed by indoor tests, numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the bearing characteristics of CFG piles and their composite foundations. Finally, a method for calculating the vertical bearing capacity of rigid piles in composite foundation considering interface parameters was proposed. The results showed that the bearing capacity characteristic values of single pile and composite foundation meet the design requirements; The interface friction angle and cohesion together increased the ultimate side friction by 64.41%; The load is mainly borne by the pile tip resistance, and the increase of the interface friction angle will make the proportion of the side friction load first increase and then decrease more obviously; The pile soil stress ratio first increased and then tended to stabilize as the interface strength increased. Compared with the field static load test results, the rationality of the calculation method for composite foundation rigid piles was verified. This study may have reference significance for the design and construction of coral sand foundation treatment in offshore island and reef projects.

Behavior of Sand Filled Nodular Piles under Compression in Soft Soil Areas

Abstract:The geological properties of the soil are poor in soft soil areas, and the ultimate skin friction and tip resistance provided by the foundation soil are also limited in these areas. The material strength of the precast pile shaft can't be fully mobilized in soft soil areas. Filling sand into the foundation soil in precast pile construction process can improve the properties of the foundation soil and promote the frictional capacity of the pile-soil interface as well. The compressive bearing capacity of pile foundation can then also be enhanced. A group of field tests as well as ABAQUS simulation are used to investigate the bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile. The following conclusions can be gained based on the measured and simulation results: the compressive bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile is obviously better than the compressive bearing capacity of the conventional pipe pile in soft soil areas; the axial force of the sand filled nodular pile decreases sharply at the nodes along the nodular pile, and the nodes along the nodular pile can promote the shaft bearing capacity of the pile foundation; the shaft bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile is much better than that of the conventional pipe pile in soft soil areas, and the enlarged shaft resistance coefficient is about 1.15-1.40.

Abstract:<p>For the pile foundation subjected to both horizontal and vertical loads, the horizontal and vertical bearing capacities are often calculated separately according to existing methods, and the influence of the vertical loads on the horizontal bearing capacity of the pile is not considered. Several model tests were carried out for the horizontal loaded pile to study the horizontal bearing behavior of pile under the action of existing vertical load in sandy foundation. In order to avoid imposing additional constraints on the pile top under vertical loads, the self-designed test loading device was developed for vertical loading, and the thin film pressure sensor was used to accurately measure the horizontal soil resistance. The test results show that: in sandy soil foundation, vertical loads applied in advance reduces the horizontal displacement and bending moment of horizontal loaded pile in some segments. The maximum value of horizontal soil resistance first increases and then decreases with the increase of existing vertical load. The horizontal bearing behavior of the small-diameter preformed pile can be improved by the vertical load in sandy soil foundation when the horizontal displacement is small.</p>

Abstract:A series of small-scale 1 g model tests were conducted using a self-designed pile driving loading model test system to investigate the effect of relative density and cross-section geometry on the development of soil stress around the pile during the penetration of X-section Cast-in-place Concrete (XCC) pile in sand. It is found that the variations of the radial stress Δ σ' r / σ' v0 in the surrounding soil presented a significant “ h / R effect” during the penetration of the XCC pile, indicating that the “ h / R effect”, which was found for circular pile during the penetration of piles, was also observed for the XCC pile. The radial stress distribution along the axial direction of the pile could be divided into three zones, i.e., the pile body region, the pile tip region, and the soil region below the pile tip. The development trend of the radial stress along with soil depth is different in each region. Additionally, the peaks of the radial stresses in the pile tip region were very sensitive to the variations of the relative density of the surrounding soils and the cross-section geometry of the piles, which increased significantly with increasing the relative density and cross-section geometry. The radial stresses Δ σ' r / σ' v0 decreased exponentially as the radial distance r/R increased. The decay rates decreased with increasing the relative densities of the surrounding soils, while increased with decreasing the cross-section geometry parameter of the piles.
Study on the pullout bearing characteristics of root piles in coral sand foundations under different water content states

Abstract:Offshore wind energy will become one of the important sources of energy in the future, and root piles with good pullout bearing characteristics can be used for the foundation of offshore wind power generation facilities. Through the model test, the pullout bearing characteristics of root piles with different water content states in coral sand foundation are comparatively analyzed, and the pullout bearing deformation law and pile body force transmission characteristic law of root piles is revealed. The results show that when the coral sand foundation is saturated and the water level rises and falls, compared with the dry sand foundation, the pullout bearing capacity of the root pile decreases, and the ability to control the displacement is sharply weakened. The axial force curve at the root is in the shape of a step; after the foundation is affected by water, the maximum value of lateral friction resistance first appears at the bottom root, and the lateral friction resistance at the lower root is always greater than that at the upper root; the water level rise and fall leads to a decrease in the lateral friction resistance in the area of the pile without a root, and the lateral friction resistance in the area of the root is increased. Under saturated and water level rise and fall condition, the total bearing ratio of the root pile section increases, and the bearing ratio of the lower root pile section is always larger than that of the upper root. After loading, the soil in the upper part of the pile is compacted, and the soil in the lower part is loosened; the maximum value of soil pressure in the compacted area of the dry sand condition gradually moves downward, and the maximum value of soil pressure in the saturated and water level rise and fall condition is always located in the lowermost part of the compacted area; the pore water pressure in the saturated and water level rise and fall condition is basically equal with the hydrostatic pressure, and there is no obvious super pore water pressure generated. The research results provide scientific basis for the application of root piles in coral sand foundation.

Abstract:To study the pile-forming mechanism and bearing deformation characteristics of continuous flight auger (CFA) piles, a series of procedures, including helical drilling, pulling up/grouting, and inserting cage/pile forming, were simulated in clay-sand double-layer foundations by a homemade model drilling machine system in laboratory model tests. The effects of two different pile-forming methods on the load transfer and bearing characteristics of the piles were investigated by performing a model test comparison of CFA piles and bored piles. The experimental results show that there exist a soil improvement effect around the pile and a diameter expansion effect during the drilling process and grouting process for the CFA pile, which can effectively improve the lateral friction resistance of the pile. Compared with the bored pile, the pile diameter in the middle of the CFA pile increased by 19%, and the total lateral friction resistance of the CFA pile increased by 9.1% at a high load (1500 N). The comparative results of the model tests show that the bearing capacity of a single CFA pile increased by 50.0% and that the total settlement decreased by 40.5%. The results of the in situ test piles show that the load-settlement curves of the two pile types are similar under low-medium loads and that the lateral friction resistance of the CFA pile under high loads is better developed, which is relatively consistent with the model test results.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of the cemented soil around the pile on the lateral bearing capacity of pile foundation, a group of fields of the bored piles and the pre-bored grouting planted piles were conducted. The test results showed that: when the applied lateral load is relatively small, the lateral bearing capacity of the bored pile is better than the lateral bearing capacity of the pre-bored grouting planted pile, and the cemented soil around the pile does not have much influence on the lateral bearing capacity; the function of the cemented soil is gradually mobilized with the applied lateral load increasing, and the cemented soil can help increase the lateral critical bearing capacity and restrict the lateral displacement as well, moreover, the cemented soil can also prevent the pile foundation from abrupt failure; the properties (strength and elastic modulus) of the cemented soil is between the concrete pile and the surrounding soil, and it can virtually improve the lateral bearing capacity of pile foundation.

Abstract:The large-diameter monopiles are the most preferred foundation used in offshore wind farms. However, the influence of pile diameter and aspect ratio on the lateral bearing behavior of monopiles in sand with different relative densities has not been systematically studied. This study presents a series of well-calibrated finite-element (FE) analyses using an advanced state dependent constitutive model. The FE model was first validated against the centrifuge tests on the large-diameter monopiles. Parametric studies were performed on rigid piles with different diameters (D = 4–10 m) and aspect ratios (L/D = 3–7.5) under a wide range of loading heights (e = 5–100 m) in sands with different relative densities (Dr = 40%, 65%, 80%). The API and PISA p-y models were systematically compared and evaluated against the FE simulation results. The numerical results revealed a rigid rotation failure mechanism of the rigid pile, which is independent of pile diameter and aspect ratio. The computed soil pressure coefficient (K = p/Dσ′v) of different diameter piles at same rotation is a function of z/L (z is depth) rather than z/D. The force–moment diagrams at different deflections were quantified in sands of different relative density. Based on the observed pile–soil interaction mechanism, a simple design model was proposed to calculate the combined capacity of rigid piles.
