Abstract:The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon (YTGC) region is one of China's vital gene banks of mountain biological species resources. It is also an experimental site for biologists worldwide to study how organisms differentiate in the exceptional environment of the plateau. Evaluating the importance of the ecological value and identifying extremely important regions to national parks to implement the strictest conservation is significant to protecting and preserving global biodiversity. YTGC as the study area, and a comprehensive evaluation model conformed to ecological value attributes was established: (i) evaluation of ecosystem service function, including water retention, soil and water conservation and biodiversity maintenance; (ii) evaluation of ecological vulnerability, including soil erosion and geological disasters; (iii) evaluation of ecological conservation, including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), Global 200 Ecoregions (G200), Biodiversity Hotspots (BH), Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs) and Priority Areas for Biodiversity Conservation in China (PABCC). Identifying as extremely important, important, and general important regions, then mosaicked with the maximum value. The results show: first, the extremely important regions of ecosystem service are about 30,242.90 km 2 (45.64%), distributed in most regions flowing southwest along the Yarlung Zangbo River. Second, the ecological vulnerability regions are about 26,561.65 km 2 (40.06%), concentrated and contiguously distributed in the valley regions along the Yarlung Zangbo River and the high-altitude glacier-covered regions. Third, the extremely important regions for ecological conservation are mainly distributed in Milin County (39.86%) and Medog County (36.33%), which also presents a clustered distribution in the highly high mountains with apparent differentiation along the Yarlung Zangbo River valley in Milin County and the vertical natural belt centered on the Namjagbarwa and the Galabai Leifeng. Finally, we proposed that the integrated extremely important regions of ecological value should be divided into national parks for strict conservation; at the same time, it is also a reference for considering the construction of biodiversity conservation corridors when roads pass through the extremely important regions. This study presents a reliable and integrative method for effectively identifying conservation priority areas at small-medium scales, which can be applied to other PAs planning and management.

Abstract:At the leaders' summit of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) on 12 October 2021, China's President Xi Jinping declared that China has officially designated its first group of national parks-the Three-River-Source National Park, the Giant Panda National Park, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, the Hainan Tropical Forests National Park, and the Wuyishan National Park. The five national parks cover a total area of ∼230 000 square kilometers and protect nearly 30% of the key terrestrial wildlife species found in China. Since the establishment of the United States' Yellowstone National Park in 1872, national parks have been founded in many countries, and some of them have become distinctive 'national signatures' and important ecological security shelters. As a large country with rich biodiversity, China now begins to establish its first five national parks, with a total of about 50 planned for the future, and to form a national-park-centric protected-area system. How will national parks change the landscape of China's ecological conservation? Is China well prepared to scientifically establish and administrate national parks? In this panel discussion, six Chinese ecological conservationists introduce the background, plans and challenges of China's national park system, and provide their scientific perspectives. Abstract:The Yarlung Zangbo Daxiagu (Grand Canyon) is the largest canyon in the world and is located at the easternmost of the Himalayas in Tibet, China. This area remains in its natural and original environment because of scarcy population sparseness and harsh terrains. This paper evaluates the hydrologic features and water environment of the Canyon based on the background data obtained during the 1998's scientific expedition to this area. Some suggestions for conservation are also discussed.

Abstract:National parks in China play a vital role in preserving biodiversity, protecting endangered species, maintaining ecological balance, and promoting sustainable development amid global biodiversity decline. Boundary delimitation and functional zoning within these parks are crucial for preserving ecosystem integrity and species diversity. In the case study of Kunlun Mountains National Park (KMNP, Qinghai section), an extensive wildlife background survey yielded 4,523 occurrence records (3,921 after optimization) for 16 nationally protected wildlife species. Using the ecological niche model, this study aimed to explore the boundary range, functional zoning, and protection gap areas within KMNP by simulating the suitable spatial distribution of wildlife species, taking into account their protection and endangered statuses. The findings indicated that the primary habitat for key protected species in KMNP mainly occupied meadow and steppe in terms of vegetation types, along with grassland and unused land in terms of land use types, with average annual precipitation from 200 mm to 400 mm, elevations ranging from 4,100 m to 4,700 m, and average annual temperatures from −4.5°C to −2°C. The suitable distribution of different wildlife species in the Kunlun Mountains area showed variations, mainly concentrated in the southwestern, central, and southeastern regions. The optimized KMNP covered around 49,800 km 2 , a 16.3 % reduction from the selected area, with the core protection zone at 16,300 km 2 and the general control zone at 33,200 km 2 . The suitability of 93.75 % (15/16) species within the core protection area of KMNP was higher comparing to the optimized area, selected area, and Mangya-Golmud-Dulan area, indicating that the boundary delimitation and functional zoning of KMNP were highly rational. The boundary range and functional zoning method developed in this study provide a crucial scientific foundation for KMNP's conservation and management, and valuable guidance for national park construction, ecosystem preservation, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of key species' reproduction and survival on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with promising future applications.

Abstract:<span>The targets of China's national park construction are to protect the authenticity and integrity of the ecosystems, and to achieve the harmonious development between humans and nature. Because of the high intensity of human activities, the authenticity of ecosystems has deviated over the past few decades. It is time to rewild the wildlife and restore the authenticity of these ecosystems. The status of rewilding wildlife in Sanjiangyuan National Park, indicating that the wildlife population, diversity and wildness have increased within the National Park. The wildlife population in the national park has been restored, with about 60,000 Tibetan antelope, 60,000 Tibetan gazelle, 36,000 Tibetan wild ass, 10,000 wild yak, and 10,000 white-lipped deer up to 2017. However, overgrazing existed on the alpine grassland with population increasing both of ungulates and livestock.</span>

But far too little attention has been paid to the synergistic work concerning the habitat quality (HQ) dynamics of all five national parks. Here, the InVEST model, combined with a satellite-derived land use and land cover product and a hot spot analysis (HSA) method, was used to investigate the HQ dynamics at the park- and pixel-scale within the CFGNPs. Our results demonstrate that the past ecological conservation practices within national parks have been unpromising, especially in Giant Panda National Park, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park (NCTL), and Wuyi Mountain National Park (WYM), where HQ as a whole showed a significant decline. Furthermore, more than half of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park (87.2%), WYM (77.4%), and NCTL (52.9%) showed significant HQ degradation from 1980 to 2019. Besides, increasing trends in the area shares of HQ degraded pixels were observed in all five national parks from 1980-1999 to 2000-2019. The HSA implied that the hot spots of high HQ degradation rates tend to occur in areas closer to urban settlements or on the edge of national parks, where human activities are intensive. Despite these disappointing findings, we highlighted from the observed local successes and the HQ plateau that the construction of CFGNPs is expected to reverse the deteriorating HQ trends. Thus, we concluded our paper by proposing an HSA-based regulatory zoning scheme that includes five subzones to guide the future construction of China's national park system.

Abstract:China's rapid economic growth has been accompanied by environmental destruction and degradation of nature reserves. In order to safeguard Sanjiangyuan, China's second largest national nature reserve, China must develop a solid understanding of the region, a respect of the local culture, and develop flexible natural resource management practices. Policy and administrative innovations are needed to replace "one size fits all" solutions to ensure long-term effectiveness in ecological protection. In November 2011, the Qinghai Sanjiangyuan National Ecological Comprehensive Experimental Zone was approved by the State Council. With such principles as "respecting local cultures," "protecting ecological environments," and "protecting the livelihood of local people," the experiment aims to highlight the role of local pastoralists and farmers, invite NGO participation, and innovate an administrative framework. These top-down policies, coupled with bottom-up, community-based experiments in mobilizing the local people since 2000, offer new hope for protecting Sanjiangyuan.

Evaluation of the Carbon Sink Capacity of the Proposed Kunlun Mountain National Park

Abstract:National parks, as an important type of nature protected areas, are the cornerstone that can effectively maintain biodiversity and mitigate global climate change. At present, China is making every effort to build a nature-protection system, with national parks as the main body, and this approach considers China's urgent goals of obtaining carbon neutrality and mitigating climate change. It is of great significance to the national carbon-neutralization strategy to accurately predict the carbon sink capacity of national park ecosystems under the background of global change. To evaluate and predict the dynamics of the carbon sink capacity of national parks under climate change and different management measures, we combined remote-sensing observations, model simulations and scenario analyses to simulate the change in the carbon sink capacity of the proposed Kunlun Mountain National Park ecosystem over the past two decades (2000-2020) and the change in the carbon sink capacity under different zoning controls and various climate change scenarios from 2020 to 2060. Our results show that the carbon sink capacity of the proposed Kunlun Mountain National Park area is increasing. Simultaneously, the carbon sink capacity will be improved with the implementation of park management and control measures; which will be increased by 2.04% to 2.13% by 2060 in the research area under multiple climate change scenarios. The research results provide a scientific basis for the establishment and final boundary determination of the proposed Kunlun Mountain National Park.

China’s National Park Construction Contributes to Carbon Peaking and Neutrality Goals

Abstract:The official establishment of China’s national parks marks a new stage in the construction of China’s ecological civilization system. National parks systematically protect the areas with the richest biodiversity and the most complete ecosystem processes in China. This is beneficial not only for China’s natural conservation work, but also for the world’s response to environmental issues, such as climate change. Based on remote sensing images of land use in the four periods 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, this study calculated the land use changes in each national park during the corresponding period. Using the Plus model LEAS module, the driving factors of land use change in the national parks were studied and explored. In addition, the study used the InVEST model carbon storage module, using remote sensing images from different periods and the corresponding carbon pools of each national park as the basic data for model operation, to obtain the carbon storage changes in each national park over the past 30 years. Based on the hotspot analysis function, the hotspot areas of carbon storage changes in the national parks in the past 30 years were determined. Consequently, based on the CARS module of the PLUS model, the carbon storage in Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park in 2030 was estimated under different scenarios. Research suggested that, except for Sanjiangyuan National Park where grassland is the main land use type, the other four national parks are all dominated by forests, and the expansion and changes in the main land use types were due to human activities. In the past 30 years, the carbon storage in China’s national park ecosystem has mainly shown a trend of first increasing and then gradually decreasing. Based on the changes in carbon storage in the national park, restoration scenarios were simulated for the core protected and generally controlled areas of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park. Under the ideal scenario, the highest value of carbon storage would be achieved by 2030, which would be 7,468,250 t higher than that in 2020. The present study provides a reference for the regional management of China’s national parks and further confirms that the implementation of the national park system can enhance China’s ability to achieve carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

Abstract:In this paper, the author first reviews the developing course of traditional sacred mountains, then further analyzes the cultural background and architecture ideas of the primary forces that participate in the construction of Chinese sacred mountains—Monarch, Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. From it the author concludes that the ultimate principle to design the traditional architecture on Chinese sacred mountains is to adequately embody the requirement of the numinous communication between the people and the nature and its cultural actions, furthest materialize its principal status of the natural environment from the design as a whole to the management from the macroscopic degree to the microcosmic degree, and perfectly inosculate the nature and the architecture. As a significant component of Chinese sacred mountains, the culture of the rich and generous Chinese classical landscape architecture would be the academic mine of Chinese national parks construction in the new century.

Abstract:This article conducts a comparative analysis of national park legislation, focusing on insights from the US National Park System to inform the development of China's emerging national park framework. Against the backdrop of a global conservation movement, the US system serves as a valuable model for China, which initiated its own national park system in 2017. On October 12, 2021, China has formally established its inaugural set of national parks, comprising the Three-River-Source National Park, the Giant Panda National Park, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, the Hainan Tropical Forests National Park, and the Wuyishan National Park. Encompassing approximately 230,000 square kilometres, these five national parks safeguard nearly 30% of China's crucial terrestrial wildlife species. As China endeavours to enact comprehensive legislation for its national parks, this research aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts by addressing key questions such as the efficacy of the US's "One National Park, One Law" model, the governance dynamics between federal, state, and local entities, and strategies for balancing conservation with diverse land uses. The analysis spans five sections, exploring the historical evolution of the US National Park System, its legal framework, challenges faced by US national parks, and policy recommendations for China. The US experience highlights the importance of establishing clear legal authorities, fostering robust public participation mechanisms, and harmonizing relationships with Indigenous communities. The findings presented in this study aspire to facilitate a nuanced understanding of national park legislation, promoting international collaboration between the US and China for the sustainable management of natural lands and the protection of global biodiversity.

Abstract:China's national park system has become an important part of the world national park system from pilot to official establishment. Preliminary progress has been made in the scene construction of digital technology, but there is still theoretical discussion and practical application in the construction of national parks, the relationship between digital technology and the protection and utilization of national parks, and the development path of digital national parks. Starting from the dilemma of China's national park system construction, this paper puts forward exploratory research plans for the new development path of national park development, so as to achieve great significance to protect the rich biodiversity of national parks, inherit precious natural resources and excellent human resources, and promote the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
