Abstract:CsPbI3 inorganic perovskites with ideal bandgap and much enhanced thermal stability compared with organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, have attracted much interest in the field of solar cells. The performances of solar cells highly depend on the quality of perovskite films, yet the research on fabrication methods of inorganic perovskites is far below that of organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts. Antisolvent engineering is a widely used method in controlling the morphology and crystallinity of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. Its effect varies with parameters such as the physicochemical properties of antisolvents and the compositions of perovskite precursors. Specially, there lacks a comprehensive study comparing different antisolvents used in low-temperature processed CsPbI3 from dimethylammonium-based precursors. In this work, we used three different antisolvents to control the growth of CsPbI3 films in a low-temperature (<200 degrees C) processed procedure and systematically compared the properties of resultant films. The green antisolvent ethyl acetate (EA) engineered CsPbI3 films exhibit improved morphology and crystallinity as well as reduced defects, compared with the counterparts processed without antisolvent or those with widely employed toxic antisolvents toluene and chlorobenzene. The EA antisolvent engineering results in efficient CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells with a champion power conversion efficiency of 8.8%. Our work thus provides a green and viable way to prepare high quality CsPbI3 perovskite films for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Toxic organic solvents are widely used in fabricating perovskite solar cells, which pose a potential threat to human health and the environment. Here, we try to prepare high-quality all-inorganic perovskite films from all aqueous solutions using a traditional two-step method. A continuous PbBr2 precursor film is first prepared from a HBr/H2O solution added with a certain amount of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The PEG plays important roles in adjusting the viscosity of the aqueous solution and affecting the growth of the PbBr2 precursor crystals. A high concentration of the CsBr/H2O solution is then spin-coated on the PbBr2 precursor film followed by annealing to form a high-quality CsPbBr3 film. The CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells prepared from the aqueous solutions show an efficiency of 7.19%, which is higher than those prepared from the organic solvents in the same conditions. It is a facile and green method to eliminate the solvent toxicity derived from organic solvents in fabricating perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:All-brominated inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 has received much attention in the field of optoelectronic applications owing to its superb stability and ease of manufacture under the ambient condition. However, the tedious process and toxic solvent are two major challenges for fabrication of CsPbBr3 films via a multi-step deposition method. Here, we demonstrate a sustainable bi-solvent system for preparing high-quality CsPbBr3 films in a triple-step solution-processed route, where the bi-solvent system comprises of green solvent water and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) in place of the noxious methanol for CsBr solution. By adjusting the temperature of heat treatment and spin-coating speed, the pinhole-free, ultra-smooth and high crystallinity of CsPbBr3 films were obtained. As a result, the CsPbBr3 PSC prepared from the green bi-solvent system demonstrates an optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.55%, which is one of the highest efficiencies for planar carbon-based PSCs without hole transport layer. Moreover, the all-inorganic unpacked PSCs exhibit excellent humidity stability under ambient environment for 34 days. Our result not only offers a facile and simple way to fabricate the pure-phase CsPbBr3 films, but also alleviates the solvent toxicity during the preparation of CsPbBr3 PSCs.

Replacing those toxic solvents with green solvents is very important for both ecological environment safety and the health of operators working in manufactory and labs. CsPbBr3‐based solar cells have attracted increasing attention due to its high stability. Herein, high‐quality CsPbBr3 films are prepared using all green solvents based on a two‐step spin‐coating method. In the first step, a green solvent system of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with the addition of γ‐butyrolactone is used for preparing PbBr2 solutions by matching the Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) between PbBr2 and the mixed solvent system. By optimizing the HSPs and viscosity, a new complex of PbBr2·(PEG) is formed by spin‐coating from the PbBr2 solution, followed by acetic acid dropping while spinning. In the second step, green water is used to dissolve CsBr to prepare a high concentration CsBr/H2O solution. High‐quality CsPbBr3 films with full coverage are obtained by spin‐coating CsBr/H2O solution onto the PbBr2·(PEG) films after annealing. As a result, a solar cell with configuration of fluorine‐doped tin oxide/TiO2/CsPbBr3/carbon exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 8.11% due to its high‐quality harvest layer.

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 is a material used for fabricating highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells. In this work, a two-step infiltration-spinning method is proposed to obtain CsPbBr3 films with pure phase. Phase transformations between CsPb2Br5, CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 are investigated by controlling the contact time between the CsBr solution and the PbBr2 substrate. CsPbBr3 films with large grain sizes are obtained after high temperature post-treatment. The CsPbBr3-based solar cells show a high efficiency (approximately 7%) with a short-circuit current density of 6.68 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 1.47 V and a fill factor of 70.9% under standard solar illumination.

Abstract:Toxic solvents used in the fabrication of perovskite films are a non-ignorable obstacle for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). CsPbBr3 based solar cells have attracted increasing attention due to their high stability in ambient air. Usually, a traditional sequential deposition route is employed to fabricate CsPbBr3 films, in which toxic DMF and methanol are separately used to dissolve PbBr2 and CsBr. In order to eliminate the solvent toxicity during the fabrication of CsPbBr3 films, we develop an anomalous sequential deposition route to prepare CsPbBr3 films. In this new route, a green solvent system composed of water with the addition of appropriate ethanol and ethylene glycol (EG) is developed to prepare the CsBr solution, and a green solvent, triethyl phosphate (TEP), is used to prepare the PbBr2 solution. Different from those obtained by the traditional sequential deposition route, CsBr films are firstly prepared from their solution, then reacted with PbBr2 through a dynamic spin-coating process, and subsequently transformed to CsPbBr3 films via annealing treatment. As a result, solar cells based on the device configuration of FTO/TiO2/CsPbBr3/carbon exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 6.86%, which is comparable to that of the PSCs prepared through the traditional sequential deposition route using toxic solvents. This work provides an environment-friendly route to prepare CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells without efficiency loss.

Abstract:CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their excellent long-term stability and easy fabrication in humid air. The preparation of the light-absorbing layer is crucial for achieving high efficiency in CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells. In this study, methylammonium iodide (CH 3 NH 3 I, MAI) was introduced into the PbBr 2 precursor solution to improve the quality of perovskite films and the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. The spin-coating method was employed to prepare CsPbBr 3 films in ambient air. Firstly, a layer of PbBr 2 film was spin-coated, followed by two spin-coatings of CsBr solution on top of it. By adjusting the content of MAI additives, a PbBr 2 film with a microporous structure was obtained. These porous structures acted as channels for CsBr molecules, enabling them to react fully with PbBr 2 and more favorable for the crystallization of CsPbBr 3 . As a result, we achieved the high-purity, high-crystallinity, and continuous CsPbBr 3 films. Furthermore, we utilized CsPbBr 3 films as the light-absorbing layer in PSCs with a structure of FTO/c-TiO 2 /m-TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 /carbon, a champion power conversion efficiency of 8.02% was achieved, and the unencapsulated device showed excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:All-inorganic halide perovskites hold promise for emerging thin-film photovoltaics due to their excellent thermal stability. Unfortunately, it has been challenging to achieve high-quality films over large areas using scalable methods under realistic ambient conditions. Herein, we investigated the coupling between the fluid dynamics and the structural evolution during controlled film formation for ambient scalable fabrication of CsPbl(2)Br perovskite films using blade coating. We simultaneously overcame the negative influences of moisture attack and the Benard-Marangoni instability in the drying ink and achieved an ideal sequential crystallization with changing halide composition during the film formation. As a result, we produced highly crystalline, uniform, and pinhole-free CsPbl(2)Br films with superior photophysical and transport properties. High-performance solar cells are fabricated to achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 14.7% for small-aperture-area (0.03 cm(2)) devices and 12.5% for the large-aperture-area (1.0 cm(2)) ones, the highest PCE reported to date for large-area all-inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Water has been labeled as a devil in fabrication and stability of perovskite solar cells. The inherent cognition impels researchers to prepare perovskite films in water-controlled conditions. Herein, water is used as a green solvent to prepare CsPbBr3 films through a two-step spin-coating method. Due to the high solubility of CsBr but low solubility of PbBr2 in water, it provides a possibility to deposit CsBr onto PbBr2 from water solution without destroying the film. Here, high-quality CsPbBr3 films are fabricated by spin-coating concentrated CsBr/H2O solution onto the PbBr2 film followed by annealing. As a result, the solar cells basing on a configuration of FTO/TiO2/CsPbBr3/Carbon exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 6.12%. This work provides a simple and easy way to prepare high-quality CsPbBr3 films for efficient solar cells. It makes a solid step toward reducing the solvent toxicity in the fabrication process of perovskite solar cells. It also breaks the forbidden zone for fabricating perovskite films from water and updates the inherent understanding of water in the research study of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Fabrication of efficient Pb reduced inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PSC) are an important part of environment-friendly perovskite technology. In this work, 10% Pb reduction in CsPb0.9Zn0.1I2Br promotes the efficiency of PSCs to 13.6% (AM1.5, 1sun), much higher than the 11.8% of the pure CsPbI2Br solar cell. Zn2+ has stronger interaction with the anions to manipulate crystal growth, resulting in size-enlarged crystallite with enhanced growth orientation. Moreover, the grain boundaries (GBs) are passivated by the Cs-Zn-I/Br compound. The high quality CsPb0.9Zn0.1I2Br greatly diminishes the GB trap states and facilitates the charge transport. Furthermore, the Zn4s-I5p states slightly reduce the energy bandgap, accounting for the wider solar spectrum absorption. Both the crystalline morphology and energy state change benefit the device performance. This work highlights a nontoxic and stable Pb reduction method to achieve efficient inorganic PSCs.
Improvement of Colloidal Characteristics in a Precursor Solution by a PbI2-(DMSO)2 Complex for Efficient Nonstoichiometrically Prepared CsPbI2.8Br0.2 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The optoelectronic properties of all-inorganic perovskite solar cells are greatly affected by the quality characteristics of films, such as the defect concentration, crystal growth orientation, crystallinity, and morphology. In this study, a PbI2-(DMSO)2 complex is adopted to partially replace PbI2 as the lead source in the preparation of perovskite precursor solutions. Due to the rapid dispersion of the PbI2-(DMSO)2 complex in a solvent, raw materials can rapidly react to form perovskite colloids with a narrow size distribution. Such uniform colloidal particles are found to be beneficial for achieving films with improved quality and highly orientated growth along the [001] direction. The optimized film exhibits a clearly improved crystallinity and a decrease in defect concentration from 4.29 × 1015 cm-3 to 3.20 × 1015 cm-3. The device based on the obtained all-inorganic CsPbI2.8Br0.2 perovskite finally achieves an increase in photovoltaic power conversion efficiency from 10.5 to 14.15%. In addition, the environmental stability of the device also benefits from the improved film quality. After 480 h of storage in air, the device can still maintain nearly 80% of its initial performance.
Thiourea-Assisted Facile Fabrication of High-Quality CsPbBr3 Perovskite Films for High-Performance Solar Cells

Abstract:Inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells have attracted widespread attention recently because of their decent efficiency and good ambient stability. Nevertheless, the fabrication of high-quality CsPbBr3 perovskite via the conventional solution-processing strategy still faces great challenges because the solubility of CsBr in the conventional solvent is poor. Here, we develop a facile thiourea-assisted two-step spin-coating process to fabricate a CsPbBr3 perovskite film with high phase purity and crystallinity and enlarged crystal grains. Thiourea is introduced into the PbBr2 layer during the first-step spin-coating process, which promotes the wettability of the PbBr2 layer and produces the space for growing large perovskite grains. The green high-concentration CsBr/H2O solution is adopted at the second-step spin-coating process, enabling enough CsBr to be deposited by a facile one-step process. By optimizing the content of thiourea, a compact CsPbBr3 perovskite film with a smooth surface, large grains, and high phase purity and crystallinity is formed. Consequently, the fabricated perovskite solar cell with the architecture of FTO/TiO2/CsPbBr3 film/carbon exhibits a superior performance with a high efficiency of 9.11%. In addition, the unencapsulated device preserves over 90% of its initial efficiency after storage at ambient conditions for 45 days.
Solution mediated halide exchange engineering for the fabrication of a thick CsPbCl3 film and its application in photovoltaics with outstanding performance

Abstract:It is a big challenge to prepare thick CsPbCl3 films using traditional solution processed approaches owing to the low solubility of precursors of PbCl2 and CsCl in common solvents. Here, we propose an indirect solution process to prepare thick CsPbCl3 films. In this new approach, a mother film of CsPbBr3 is first prepared through a solution process, and then it is dipped into a diluted HCl/methanol solution. During the dipping process, it triggers a halide exchange reaction between Br- and Cl-, and it eventually produces a thick CsPbCl3 film (∼400 nm) with high quality and purity. Afterwards, a carbon based hole transportation layer (HTL) free solar cell with a configuration of FTO/TiO2/CsPbCl3/carbon is constructed, and it delivers an average PCE of 1.23% and an outstanding PCE of 1.39% in a batch of PSCs. Meanwhile, the solar cell maintains its 82% initial PCE after storage in open air for 31 days. This work overcomes the obstacle of the traditional solution approach for the preparation of CsPbCl3 films, which makes it promising for preparing various CsPbCl3 film-based devices via a solution process.

Abstract:All inorganic perovskite of CsPbBr3 based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasingly attentions in the hot topics for research of PSCs owing to their high stability in air. Fabrication of columnar CsPbBr3 grains spanning the whole films is strongly desired for fabrication of highly efficient solar cells. Here, we introduce a polymer of polyethylene oxide (PEO) into PbBr2 solution as a ligand to modify the formation of CsPbBr3 films, and then promote the microstructure of CsPbBr3 films, which evolves from small grains to equiaxed large grains with preferred crystallographic orientation. The improved quality of CsPbBr3 films contributes to low defect density and prolonged life time of carriers. As a result, the efficiency of carbon-based hole transportation layer (HTL) free solar cell boosts from 5.92 % to 8.12 % by optimizing the volume fraction of PEO in PbBr2 solution.

The performance of PSCs is significantly affected by their morphology and crystallinity induced by compositional ratio, solvent/anti-solvent engineering and post thermal annealing. In this study, the compositional ratio effect of two precursors, PbI2 and CsBr, on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a device with ITO/SnO2/CsPbI2Br/Spiro-MeOTAD/Au structure was investigated. With the assistance of anti-solvent chlorobenzene, perovskite with a PbI2 : CsBr ratio of 1.05 : 1 showed a high quality thin film with higher crystallinity and larger grain size. In addition, the molar ratio of precursors PbI2 and CsBr improved the PCE of the PSCs, and the PSCs fabricated using the perovskite with an optimal ratio of PbI2 and CsBr exhibited a PCE of 13.34%.

Abstract:In the process of preparing CsPbBr3 films by two-step or multi-step methods, due to the low solubility of CsBr in organic solvents, the prepared perovskite films often have a large number of holes, which is definitely not conducive to the performance of CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In response to this problem, this article proposed a method of introducing InBr3 into the PbBr2 precursor to prepare a porous PbBr2 film to increase the reaction efficiency between CsBr and PbBr2 and achieve the purpose of In (III) incorporation, which not only optimized the morphology of the produced CsPbBr3 film but also enhanced the charge extraction and transport capabilities, which was ascribed to the reduction of the trap state density and impurity phases in the perovskite films, improving the performance of CsPbBr3 PSCs. At the optimal InBr3 concentration of 0.21 M, the InBr3:CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cell exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 6.48%, which was significantly higher than that of the pristine device.

Abstract:All inorganic perovskite of CsPbBr 3 based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasingly attentions in the hot topics for research of PSCs owing to their high stability in air. Fabrication of columnar CsPbBr 3 grains spanning the whole films is strongly desired for fabrication of highly efficient solar cells. Here, we introduce a polymer of polyethylene oxide (PEO) into PbBr 2 solution as a ligand to modify the formation of CsPbBr 3 films, and then promote the microstructure of CsPbBr 3 films, which evolves from small grains to equiaxed large grains with preferred crystallographic orientation. The improved quality of CsPbBr 3 films contributes to low defect density and prolonged life time of carriers. As a result, the efficiency of carbon-based hole transportation layer (HTL) free solar cell boosts from 5.92 % to 8.12 % by optimizing the volume fraction of PEO in PbBr 2 solution.
