Abstract:Graphene aerogels (GAs) with attractive properties have shown tremendous potentials in energy- and environment-related applications. Unfortunately, current assembly methods for GAs such as sol-gel and freeze-casting processes must be conducted in enclosed spaces with unconventional conditions, thus being literally inoperative for in situ and continuous productions. Herein, a direct slurry-casting method at open ambient conditions is established to arbitrarily prepare three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene oxide (GO) bulks without macroscopic dimension limits on a wide range of solid surfaces by retarding Ostwald ripening of 3D liquid GO foams when being dried in air. A subsequent fast thermal reduction (FTR) of GO foams leads to the formation of graphene aerogels (denoted as FTR-GAs) with hierarchical closed-cellular graphene structures. The FTR-GAs show outstanding high-temperature thermal insulation (70% decrease for 400 °C), as well as superelasticity (>1000 compression-recovery cycles at 50% strain), ultralow density (10-28 mg cm-3), large specific surface area (BET, 206.8 m2 g-1), and high conductivity (ca. 100 S m-1). This work provides a viable method to achieve in situ preparations of high-performance GAs as multifunctional structural materials in aircrafts, high-speed trains, or even buildings for the targets of energy efficiency, comfort, and safety.

Abstract:Chitosan, a semi-crystalline biomolecule, has attracted wide attention due to its high synthesis flexibility. In this study, to improve the mechanical properties of chitosan aerogels (CSAs), graphene oxide (GO) was extracted and introduced into chitosan aerogels as fillers. The porous CSAs/GO composite aerogels were fabricated by an environmentally friendly freeze-drying process with different GO contents (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, wt.%). The characteristics of the CSAs/GO were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical measurements and mercury porosimeter. The crystallinity of samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanism of the effect of graphene oxide on chitosan was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the microstructure of the samples is developed in the network structure. The porosity of CSAs/GO aerogels is as high as 87.6%, and the tensile strength of the films increased from 6.60 MPa to 10.56 MPa with the recombination of graphene oxide. The crystallinity (CrI) of composite aerogels increased from 27% to 81%, which indicates that graphene oxide improves the mechanical properties of chitosan by chemical crosslinking.
Three-dimensional graphene-based aerogels prepared by a self-assembly process and its excellent catalytic and absorbing performance

Abstract:A simple one-step method for fabricating graphene-based hydrogels (GHs) with interconnected 3D networks using Cu nanoparticles was developed. During this process, graphene oxide (GO) was reduced by Cu nanoparticles to form reduced GO (rGO) which then self-assembled to form GHs. Meanwhile, the Cu nanoparticles were oxidized to form copper(I) oxide which deposited onto the rGO sheets and became imbedded in the GHs. The GHs were transformed to graphene-based aerogels (GAs) by a green freeze-drying method. The composition of the GAs can be easily adjusted by simply changing the initial amount of Cu nanoparticles or the concentration of the GO suspension. The GAs not only possess good catalytic performance for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange but also have excellent capacities for removing various oils and dyes from water.

Abstract:The inherently formed liquid crystals (LCs) of graphene oxide (GO) in aqueous dispersions severely restrict the fabrication of large-size and structure-intact graphene aerogel bulk by an industry-applicable method. Herein, by developing a surfactant-foaming sol-gel method to effectively disrupt and reconstruct the inherent GO LCs via microbubbles as templates, we achieve the large-size and structure-intact graphene hydrogel bulk (GHB). After simple freezing and air-drying, the resulting graphene aerogel bulk (GAB) with a structure-intact size of about 1 m2 exhibits a superelasticity of up to 99% compressive strain, ultralow density of 2.8 mg cm-3, and quick solar-thermal conversion ability. The modified GAB (GABTP) shows a high decomposition temperature ( Tmax) of 735 °C in air and a low heat storage capacity. These excellent performances make the GABs suitable for many practical applications, as proven in this work, including as high compressive force absorbers, high absorption materials for oils or dangerous solvents, superior solar-thermal management materials for rapid heater or controlled shelter, and high-efficiency fire-resistant and thermal insulation materials. The whole preparation process is easily scalable and cost-effective for mass production of structure-intact multifunctional graphene aerogel bulk toward practical applications.
Biomimetic Architectured Graphene Aerogel with Exceptional Strength and Resilience.

Abstract:Materials combining lightweight, robust mechanical performances, and multifunctionality are highly desirable for engineering applications. Graphene aerogels have emerged as attractive candidates. Despite recent progresses, the bottleneck remains how to simultaneously achieve both strength and resilience. While multiscale architecture designs may offer a possible route, the difficulty lies in the lack of design guidelines and how to experimentally achieve the necessary structure control over multiple length scales. The latter is even more challenging when manufacturing scalability is taken into account. The Thalia dealbata stem is a naturally porous material that is lightweight, strong, and resilient, owing to its architecture with three-dimensional (3D) interconnected lamellar layers. Inspired by such, we assemble graphene oxide (GO) sheets into a similar architecture using a bidirectional freezing technique. Subsequent freeze-drying and thermal reduction results in graphene aerogels with highly tunable 3D architectures, consequently an unusual combination of strength and resilience. With their additional electrical conductivity, these graphene aerogels are potentially useful for mechanically switchable electronics. Beyond such, our study establishes bidirectional freezing as a general method to achieve multiscale architectural control in a scalable manner that can be extended to many other material systems.

Abstract:Robust superhydrophobic and exceptionally thermostable graphene aerogels exhibiting a three-dimensional macro- and mesoporous structure have been synthesized through a (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane-assisted two-step route with natural drying. The facile synthetic process not only guarantees their excellent performance but also greatly improves their practical production rate. The prepared graphene aerogels hold excellent superhydrophobicity, for which water contact angle exceeded 160 degrees, even after 20 ethanol washing–drying cycles. Furthermore, the self-assembly functionalized-graphene sheets enhance the thermal stability of the nanocomposites, due to the good dispersion of functionalized-graphene sheets and the strong bonding between graphene sheets and polymer chains within the aerogels. The study implies a novel and practical methodology to efficiently fabricate three-dimensional composite materials with enhanced performances.

Abstract:Multifunctional silica-based aerogels are an emerging material due to their unique properties and wide applications. However, their large-scale production and application are limited due to the high cost and cumbersome preparation process. Herein, we prepare graphene oxide (GO)/silica-based composite aerogels via a simple in situ sol-gel reaction. GO nanosheets (GOs) are functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) successively. After a cohydrolysis and condensation of trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS) and dimethoxydimethylsilane (DMDMS) in the presence of GOs and a convenient ambient-pressure drying process, the composite aerogels are obtained. In addition to the normal cross-linking of MTMS and DMDMS, the GOs also behave as cross-linking points to significantly enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the network of the composite aerogels. The pore structure of the aerogels is tailored by varying the GO loads as well as its surface modification. The Young's modulus of a composite aerogel with a GO load of 0.5 wt % is about 5 times that for a neat polysiloxane aerogel, and the maximum degradation rate temperature is increased to over 90 °C. Compared with pure polysiloxane aerogel, the thermal insulation and flame resistance are also improved by a small addition of GOs. Moreover, GO/silica-based composite aerogels show stable piezo-resistive behavior. With the excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and multifunctionality, GO/silica-based composite aerogels show promising applications under some harsh and extreme conditions.
Graphene/nanofiber Aerogels: Performance Regulation Towards Multiple Applications in Dye Adsorption and Oil/water Separation

Abstract:The fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels is challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the structures and properties to satisfy various demands. Herein, we develop a versatile graphene oxide/nanofiber aerogel (GNA), in which cellulose acetate nanofibers are introduced in graphene aerogels for the first time to prevent the sheets from over-stacking and enhance connectivity of cell walls. This GNA exhibits excellent underwater stability and high adsorption capacity (> 800 mg/g) towards cationic dyes. Its density, pore structure and mechanical properties are easily tuned by varying the composition as well as compression deformation. The reshaping ability of GNA combined with co-deposition of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine makes it a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and shape-stable material to quickly separate oil-in-water emulsions with an extremely high flux (> 19,000 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)). On the other hand, after chemical modification and crosslinking via vapor deposition of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, GNA turns to be a superhydrophobic and superelastic material that can adsorb organic liquids with an adsorption capacity of 230-734 g/g, being superior to most of known adsorbents. The materials are mass-producible and combine mechanical robustness and easy regeneration, providing a simple strategy for fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels satisfying various applications in water treatment.
Intrinsically Microstructured Graphene Aerogel Exhibiting Excellent Mechanical Performance and Super-High Adsorption Capacity

Abstract:Highly porous graphene aerogels (GAs) demonstrate extensive applications in damping blocks, thermal insulation, sensors, catalyst carriers and energy storage because of their ultralow density, superelasticity and functional versatility. These properties have been regulated by topological structural design and composite of materials, but the effect of the structural unit on the properties of GA has not been reported. Herein, highly porous GAs with excellent mechanical performances and improved adsorption capacities have been prepared by a freezing-drying process. Ultra-flyweight (rho < 1 mg cm(-3) ), superelastic (low energy loss factor) and high-strength (i.e., high Young' modulus) aerogels can be obtained by integrating different wall thicknesses and pore sizes. And it has been found that the grain refinement of ice crystals has a positive impact on the strength and modulus of as-prepared GAs during freezing-drying, which is similar to typical Hall-Petch strengthening in fine crystal metal materials. The as-prepared GA with the thinnest wall thickness exhibits the highest adsorption properties with respect to the oil solvents, and the adsorption capacity is 1272 times of its own weight. This study enriches our understanding of the structure and performance of GAs and indicates a practical methodology to ensure precise structural control of high-performance GAs for various applications. Self-assembly of graphene oxide aerogels by layered double hydroxides cross-linking and their application in water purification

Abstract:Self-assembly based on graphene building blocks are an important strategy for three-dimensional (3D) architectures, but their fabrication and application in water purification remain challenging. Here, we report a facile one-step approach to prepare 3D graphene oxide (GO) hydrogels and aerogels containing nanoscaled layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The LDHs acted as cross-linking agent molecules ("buttons") to join GO nanosheets into a 3D network via charge-assisted hydrogen bonds and lattice-lattice cation-pi interactions. The resultant aerogels exhibited high hydrophilicity and excellent structural stability/plasticity in water environments, which guarantee the availability of their effective active sites in aqueous solution and overcome the utilization restrictions of neat GO aerogels due to their fragile morphology. The obtained LDH + GO aerogels showed a high capability for removal of dye (methylene blue) and heavy metal (Cd2+) pollutants from water. The addition of LDH nanoparticles assisted the aerogels in maintaining their 3D monoliths and made it easy for separation and collection after use, and improved the adsorption capacities for environmental pollutants via reducing the stacking of GO sheets and exposing more active adsorption sites. Thus the obtained LDH + GO aerogels have a great potential for water purification as highly efficient and stable adsorbents.
Ice Crystal Growth Mechanism and Structure-activity Relationships of Graphene Oxide/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Aerogels

Abstract:Aerogels are special porous materials with low thermal conductivity, light weight, high energy absorption rate and large surface area, which have been applied in many fields. However, controlling the aerogel microstructure remains an academic challenge. Herein, by employing graphene oxide (GO) as the aerogel skeleton and utilizing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to regulate the ice crystal growth, we elucidate the relationships between the physicochemical properties of GO/PVA aerogel precursors and the nucleation and growth of ice crystals by using an ice-templating method. We demonstrate that due to the hydrogen bond formed between PVA and water molecules, resulting in the initial crystallization temperature being reduced from −12.60 °C (GO/PVA-0.01) to −16.21 °C (GO/PVA-0.1). Meanwhile, the strong hydrogen bond between PVA and GO limits the diffusion of water molecules, thereby inhibiting the growth of ice crystals, decreasing the pore size of the GO/PVA aerogel from 9.96 nm (GO/PVA-0.01) to 7.19 nm (GO/PVA-0.3), and thus the compressive strength of the aerogel increases from 0.045 MPa to 0.13 MPa. Overall, the finding of this study can be extended to other aerogel precursors, and exhibit important scientific value and practical significance for the preparation of aerogel materials with highly controllable structures and performances.

Covalently Cross-Linked Graphene Oxide Aerogel with Stable Structure for High-Efficiency Water Purification

Abstract:Porous graphene-based aerogels (GAs) hold great promise for water purification due to their fascinating properties. However, weak connections between the graphene oxide nanosheets cause instability and incompressibility in GAs during practical applications. Herein, the small organic molecule of cysteamine was selected as a covalent cross-linker to fabricate GAs through a facile one-step synthesis method. The porosity and mechanical stability of GAs were simultaneously improved due to strong covalent cross-linking between the graphene oxide nanosheets via cysteamine as the linkage. The resultant graphene/cysteamine aerogels (GCAs) were compressible with excellent structural stability under different acid, base, and organic solution conditions. The maximum oil absorption capacity of the GCAs reached as high as 251 g/g and did not obviously decrease even after regeneration by squeezing. In addition, the GCAs exhibited a high adsorption capacity for common dyes, such as methylene blue (207.8 mg/g) and methyl orange (70.2 mg/g). As expected, the as-prepared aerogels with high adsorption capacities, structural stability and excellent compressibility, have great potential as recyclable and durable materials for water purification.

Abstract:Resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) and graphene oxide (GO) aerogels have found a variety of applications owing to their excellent properties and remarkable flexibility. However, the macroscopic and controllable synthesis of their composite gels is still a great challenge. By using GO sheets as template skeletons and metal ions (Co(2+), Ni(2+), or Ca(2+)) as catalysts and linkers, the first low-temperature scalable strategy for the synthesis of a new kind of RF-GO composite gel with tunable densities and mechanical properties was developed. The aerogels can tolerate a strain as high as 80% and quickly recover their original morphology after the compression has been released. Owing to their high compressibility, the gels might find applications in various areas, for example, as adsorbents for the removal of dye pollutants and in oil-spill cleanup.

Abstract:Design of graphene composite aerogel with intriguing attributes usually complicates the preparation process. It is still challenging to achieve high-performance graphene aerogel in a feasible way. Herein, graphene@cellulose nanocrystals/EPDM composite aerogel (rGCA/EPDM) with well-ordered lamellar porous structure and interconnected networks was prepared through a facile strategy of chemical reduction and self-assembly under natural drying condition. Interfacial bonding formed in the composite aerogel, and CNCs acted as reinforcing skeleton and EPDM chains provided crosslinking elastic network in the composite aerogel, which endowed rGCA/EPDM with superior compressibility and recoverability (up to 90% strain), excellent mechanical flexibility, enhanced EMI SE and effective adsorption performance for oil/water separation. The hydrophobic rGCA/EPDM could adsorb various oils and organic solvents from water phase, meanwhile the absorbed solvents could be recovered by continuous adsorption-desorption process and the adsorption capacity only slightly reduced after 10 adsorption-squeezing or adsorption-volatilization cycles, revealing the good structural stability and recyclable adsorption performance due to its hydrophobicity and robust hierarchical porous structure. Moreover, the composite aerogel could realize real-time adsorption of organic solvent from water surface by pumping force. Such an effective strategy obtaining the composite aerogel exhibits a promising potential in oil cleanup and pollution remediation field.
Fabrication of super-elastic graphene aerogels by ambient pressure drying and application to adsorption of oils

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene-based aerogels have promising applications in oil adsorption and environmental restoration. However, current research of graphene-based aerogels is often hindered by high preparation cost, poor mechanical properties and low recycling efficiency. Here, super-elastic graphene aerogel (SGA) was prepared through one-step freezing and twice hydrothermal reduction followed by drying under ambient pressure. The simple atmospheric drying provides a possibility for large-scale preparation of high performance graphene-based aerogels. The prepared SGA not only has the ability of highly repeatable compression rebound, but also exhibits excellent oil adsorption performance. And the overall performance of SGA is better than most of graphene-based aerogels prepared by freeze drying. After the SGA was cyclically compressed with 70% strain for 300 times, it can return to the original shape and height substantially. SGA retained about 90% of the initial adsorption capacity after 50 cycles of adsorption and compression regeneration for cyclohexane.

Abstract:In order to improve structural stability of aerogel, supported N-doped reduced graphene oxide aerogels are prepared by introducing fiber materials (biomass cellulose and carbon fibers) via self-assembly method. Thereinto, N-doped carbon fibers/reduced graphene oxide aerogel exhibits ultra-light density (7.19 mg/cm(3)), high specific surface area (329.6 m(2)/g), excellent superhydrophobicity, high adsorption capacity (206.38 g/g), which is superior to most reported cellulose aerogels. Moreover, regardless of multiple heating or squeezing cycles, adsorption capacity of this aerogel is also more than 90 %. In addition, N-doped carbon fibers/reduced graphene oxide aerogel shows good mechanical compressive property and thermal stability, which contributes to high-valued utilization in practice.

Abstract:In order to solve the environmental problems caused by greenhouse gas emissions, cellulosenanofiber (CNF)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO) aerogel was obtained by step-by-step heating, tert-butanol replacement, freeze-drying, and high-temperature activation in this paper. The micromorphology, specific surface area, pore size distribution, and thermal stability of the prepared aerogels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, automatic surface area and porosity analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The interaction state and adsorption mechanism of CO2 and aerogel physical adsorption were described by Materials Studio simulation. The results showed that the adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. After carbonization, the thermal stability of the aerogel was good (mass loss rate <1%). With the increase of GO content, its specific surface area increased (392.41 m2/g) and CO2 adsorption capacity increased (432.76 cm3/g at 273 K). The simulation results show that hydrogen bond energy and van der Waals adsorption are the main factors that help in adsorption of CO2 on the surface aerogel, and electrostatic adsorption is the secondary adsorption factor. The application of green material carbon-based aerogels is also in line with the concept of sustainable development.
