Abstract:Acidity plays a vital role in methane conversion by co-feeding method, which is one of the best strategies to improve the utilization and gentle the reaction conditions of methane. In this work, Zn, Ni, Mo, La, Ga, Fe and Co-impregnated ZSM-5 zeolites have been prepared with the same substitutions to variate the acidities and tested in co-aromatization of methanol with methane. It is demonstrated that the new medium-strong acid sites formed by metal and strong acid sites are the key role to activate methane in co-reaction. Zn-modified ZSM-5 catalyst is preferred to exhibit the best methane conversion of 12%, whose aromatic selectivity increases from 27.2% to 52.2% compared with that of HZSM-5. Besides, the addition of methane further improves the production of high-valued aromatics compared with methanol to aromatics (MTA) reaction.

Abstract:The Cover Feature illustrates a highly selective catalyst system of ZIF‐8‐encapsulated mononuclear Fe species for the direct functionalization of methane into value‐added formic acid under mild conditions, which is one of the Holy Grails in chemistry and pivotal for methane valorization and H2 production. In their Research Article, W. Luo and co‐workers developed an in‐situ synthesis approach for encapsulating mononuclear Fe sites inside the voids of ZIF‐8. The as‐obtained Fe‐ZIF‐8 could afford a formic acid selectivity of ∼97%, reflecting one of the state‐of‐the‐art performances for heterogeneous catalysts in the mild oxidation of methane with H2O2 as the oxidant at 323 K. The confined mononuclear Fe species within a porous metal‐organic framework material are identified as the intrinsic active sites, providing an enzyme‐like selectivity for efficient methane oxidation under mild conditions. Abstract:Production of value-added chemicals from oriented methane conversion under mild conditions is of great significance for utilization of the energy resources, which, however, remains a great challenge due to its difficulty in the selective activation of C–H bond. Herein, we report a highly selective and efficient methane conversion to formic acid on atomically dispersed Fe sites confined in the nano-channels of ZSM-5. The turnover frequency for producing C1 liquid oxygenates reaches 84,200 h−1 with a high selectivity of 91% to formic acid at 80 °C, which outperforms all previously reported catalysts. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the ZSM-5-confined Fe-O active centers can facilely dissociate the C–H bonds and catalyze successive oxidation of methane to formic acid via free radical mechanisms under mild conditions. This study opens a new path of engineering the microenvironment of confined Fe sites within nano-channels toward highly selective methane conversion with low energy input.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane into methanol is of paramount importance but poses significant challenges in achieving high methanol productivity and selectivity, especially under mild reaction conditions. We show that a Cu-modified monomeric Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst is a highly efficient material for the direct conversion of methane into methanol in the liquid phase using H2O2 as an oxidant at low temperatures, which exhibits an excellent methanol productivity of 431 molMeOH·mol–1Fe·h–1 (with a methanol selectivity of ∼80% over the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst). Combining the control experiments and comprehensive characterization results by among others, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance as well as density functional theory calculations, we found that Cu species in the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst play a pivotal role in facilitating the formation of •OH radicals, which quickly react with •CH3 radicals to form CH3OH. Abstract:Direct oxidation of methane into value-added liquid chemicalsisa promising route for wide applications. However, the efficient conversionof methane with high selectivity under mild conditions is still challenging.Herein, the catalysts of rhodium dispersed on ZSM-5 were synthesizedfor the methane conversion utilizing molecular O-2 as theoxidant together with CO and H2O under a total pressureof 40 bar at <100 & DEG;C. Moreover, the conversion of methaneand the selectivity of formic acid could be improved by increasingacidity over the Rh/ZSM-5 catalysts. Promoted by H+, theactivities of methane oxidation can reach 3.56 mol(HCOOH)/mol(Rh)/h and 23.96 mol(HCOOH)/mol(Rh)/h at 50 and 90 & DEG;C over the 5.0Rh/H-ZSM-5 catalyst, and theselectivity of HCOOH of 98.48% to all organic oxygenates can be acquiredat 90 & DEG;C. Dramatically, the activation of the C-H bondcan even happen at room temperature. Electron paramagnetic resonanceresults showed that acidity can promote the generation of & BULL;OHwith CO, H2O, and O-2 as the reactants, resultingin high catalytic activity under mild conditions.

Abstract:Direct oxidation of methane into value‐added C1 oxygenated products, such as methanol, is essential and remains a significant challenge in the field of catalysis. In this work, we have prepared Fe/ZSM‐5 materials via three different methods and investigated the influence of various preparation methods on the composition and catalytic performance of Fe/ZSM‐5 for the low‐temperature oxidation of methane. Through a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet‐visible diffuse reflectance and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, we have found that the highest proportion of monomeric Fe species of 71% could be achieved in the ZSM‐5 zeolite by the solid‐state ion‐exchange method, affording an excellent C1 oxygenates yield of 120 mol/molFe with a C1 oxygenates selectivity of 96% at 50 °C for 30 min in the aqueous solution of H2O2.

Abstract:Direct catalytic conversion of methane under mild conditions is beneficial but challenging. Herein, we report a direct co-conversion of methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen peroxide into acetic acid, catalyzed by Fe/ZSM-5 (0.25) zeolite under mild conditions. The highest reported acetic acid space-time yield of ∼12.01 mmol g cat −1 h −1 with an optimal selectivity of 63.2% is achieved at 50 °C. This relatively high yield is ascribed to the mononuclear Fe 3+ species. 13 C-Tracking experiments revealed that the methyl and carbonyl groups of acetic acid originate from methane and carbon monoxide, respectively. Spin-trapping experiments indicated that ∙OH and ∙CH 3 radicals are involved in the reaction. In situ Raman analysis suggested that –Fe–OCH 3 species is the possible intermediate. Overall, our method is greener, and our catalyst is more economical than those currently used in the industrial process. Therefore, we expect a pilot-scale test to determine the possibility as an industrial alternative.

Abstract:Direct nonoxidative conversion of methane to ethylene, aromatics and hydrogen has been recognized as an attractive utilization of natural gas, but qualified catalyst faces huge challenges. Most catalysts reported for this reaction are deactivated fast by carbon deposition. Herein, we demonstrated an active, selective and stable molten tungsten-indium bimetal catalyst entrapped in a silica gel, offering 11% methane conversion in single pass, with C-2/C-3-C-5/aromatics hydrocarbon distributions of 36%/4%/54% at 950 ?. A little carbon was formed during reaction, but spontaneously floated onto tungsten-indium liquid surface and moved onto silica surface thereby leaving the tungsten-indium liquid surface clean. No deactivation was thus observed even after 120-hour testing. Theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that methane is converted into ethane on indium clusters, followed by gas-phase thermal cracking to ethylene and tandem aromatization on tungsten clusters to aromatics. The high stability and controllable hydrocarbon distribution promise our catalyst great potential of practical applications.

Abstract:Oxidative methane (CH4) carbonylation promises a direct route to the synthesis of value-added oxygenates such as acetic acid (CH3COOH). Here, we report a strategy to realize oxidative CH4 carbonylation through immobilized Ir complexes on an oxide support. Our immobilization approach not only enables direct CH4 activation but also allows for easy separation and reutilization of the catalyst. Furthermore, we show that a key step, methyl migration, that forms a C-C bond, is sensitive to the electrophilicity of carbonyl, which can be tuned by a gentle reduction to the Ir centers. While the as-prepared catalyst that mainly featured Ir(IV) preferred CH3COOH production, a reduced catalyst featuring predominantly Ir(III) led to a significant increase of CH3OH production at the expense of the reduced yield of CH3COOH.

Abstract:The selective conversion of methane is a significant but difficult challenge. We reported a CuFe bimetallic catalyst supported by g-C3N4 for the catalytic oxidation of methane to oxygenated C1 products. Using H2O2 as the oxidant, Cu0.4Fe0.3-C3N4 catalyst had a C1 yield of 8231 mu mol center dot gcat almost all of the liquid phase products were target C1 products. The methanol selectivity on CuFe-C3N4 was 44.5 %, comparing with 20.2 % methanol selectivity on Cu-C3N4. The formation of a Cu-O-Fe site on the CuFe-C3N4 was confirmed by in situ DRIFTS and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. This Cu-O-Fe site was responsible for the improved catalyst performance. DFT calculations illustrated that at the Cu-O-Fe site, H2O2 dissociated into two center dot OH radicals instead of center dot H and center dot OOH radicals as it did at the Cu-O-Cu site. The center dot OH radicals combined with the center dot CH3 radicals from the CH4 molecules to form methanol. These findings provided valuable insights into the rational design of active sites on carbon nitride materials.

Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.

Abstract:The production of acetic acid, an important industrial chemical traditionally obtained through the carbonylation of methanol using noble metal‐based homogeneous catalysts, encounters challenges arising from high equipment costs and sustainability concerns. The direct liquid‐phase oxidative carbonylation of methane emerges as a promising alternative, capitalizing on abundant natural gas resources and featuring a potentially mild and straightforward process. However, most catalysts proposed for this process suffer from low acetic acid yields due to the scarcity of active sites and the swift generation of C1 oxygenates, posing difficulties for subsequent carbonylation and impeding their industrial feasibility. Herein, we report a highly efficient 0.1Cu/Fe‐HZ5‐TF catalyst featuring exclusively mononuclear Fe and Cu anchored in the ZSM‐5 channels. Under optimized conditions, the catalyst achieved an unprecedented acetic acid yield of 40.5 mmol gcat‐1 h‐1 at 50 °C, surpassing the previous maximum (12.0 mmol gcat‐1h‐1) by more than threefold. Comprehensive characterization, isotope‐labeled experiments and DFT calculations reveal that the homogeneous mononuclear Fe sites are responsible for the activation and oxidation of methane, while the neighboring Cu sites play a key role in retarding the oxidation process. This synergistic action promotes C‐C coupling, resulting in the efficient synthesis of acetic acid.

Theoretical Insights into the Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol on Single-Atom Alloy Catalysts

Abstract:The direct conversion of methane into value-added fuels and chemicals such as methanol has attracted increasing interest, but remains a great challenge due to the chemical inertness of methane. Herein, twelve single-atom alloys (SAAs) were designed for the activation of methane initially, and then the ones owning superior catalytic activity for C-H bond dissociation were screened out for further investigation of selective oxidation of methane to methanol by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic modeling. The results indicate that doping of Ir metal-atom into inert coinage hosts (Ag, Au and Cu) leads to a higher activity for methane dissociation, primarily deriving from the interaction between the C-H bond of methane and the unique projected d-band density of states of the Ir atom. With the introduction of molecular oxygen, three possible reaction mechanisms for selective oxidation of methane to methanol were proposed. Through DFT calculations, the complete reaction networks of three pathways were determined, and microkinetics revealed the changes of surface coverage of reactive species on each SAA under actual reaction conditions. The sophisticated analysis showed oxidation reactions were in favor on Ir 1 /Ag surface over all temperature ranges while favorable for Ir 1 /Au and Ir 1 /Cu within a limited interval, indicating that Ir 1 /Ag SAA is the most efficient for selective oxidation of methane to methanol. The insights in this work provide important guidelines for the design of highly active and efficient catalysts for direct conversion of methane in future.

Abstract:Iron and copper containing ZSM-5 catalysts are effective for the partial oxidation of ethane with hydrogen peroxide giving combined oxygenate selectivities and productivities of up to 95.2% and 65 mol kgcat(-1) h(-1), respectively. High conversion of ethane (ca. 56%) to acetic acid (ca. 70% selectivity) can be observed. Detailed studies of this catalytic system reveal a complex reaction network in which the oxidation of ethane gives a range of C2 oxygenates, with sequential C-C bond cleavage generating C1 products. We demonstrate that ethene is also formed and can be subsequently oxidized. Ethanol can be directly produced from ethane, and does not originate from the decomposition of its corresponding alkylperoxy species, ethyl hydroperoxide. In contrast to our previously proposed mechanism for methane oxidation over similar zeolite catalysts, the mechanism of ethane oxidation involves carbon-based radicals, which lead to the high conversions we observe.

Abstract:Several ceria‐zirconia supported mono and bi‐metallic transition metal oxide clusters containing Fe, Cu, and Ni are synthesized by dry impregnation. Through XRD, H 2 ‐TPR, NH 3 ‐TPD, pyridine adsorption followed by FTIR spectroscopy and XAS, the well‐dispersed nature of the transition metal oxide clusters is revealed, and the Lewis acidity of the catalysts is assessed. In‐situ FTIR spectroscopy is used to monitor the methane activation on catalyst surfaces. All catalysts activate methane at 250 °C forming methyl, alkyl, and methoxy species on the catalyst surface. By co‐feeding steam and oxygen together with methane, continuous direct oxidation of methane to methanol can be achieved, with the complete oxidation to CO 2 as the other reaction path. Methoxy species are found to be a key intermediate for methanol production. Lowering the methane conversion improves the methanol selectivity. By extrapolation, it is estimated that methanol selectivity close to unity can be achieved below a threshold of methane conversion at about 0.002%. The formation of CuO and NiO mixed metal oxides produces stronger Lewis acid sites and yields higher methanol selectivity.

Abstract:Cr1–O4 as an active site in the Cr1/ZSM-5 SAC can catalyze the DOM to form value-added C1 oxygenated products with a productivity of 21 100 μmol gcat−1 h−1 and a selectivity of 99.8% at 50 °C within 30 min, which outperforms most state-of-the-art catalysts.
Single-Step Oxidation of Low-Concentration Methane to Methanol in the Gaseous Phase Using Ceria-Based Iridium-Copper Catalysts

Abstract:Single-step conversion of methane to methanol in the gaseous phase is required for high value added application of methane and environmental protection, but it is challenging. Here, direct oxidation of methane to methanol under gaseous condition on iridium promoted Cu/CeO2 catalyst, prepared using a sol-gel method, is investigated. The addition of iridium can effectively upgrade the redox properties and oxygen storage capacity due to intense metal interaction, stimulating a prominent catalytic performance for methane conversion to methanol on Cu-Ir@CeO2 catalyst. Approximately 26.2 mu mol/g(cat) methanol yield and 68 % methanol selectivity are achieved on the trimetallic 5Cu0.5Ir@CeO2 catalyst at 550 degrees C in 2 h. Consequences of the analysis of XRD, SEM, HRTEM, Raman, FI-IR and XPS demonstrate that highly-dispersed Ir and Cu species are uniformly distributed on CeO2 surface, and partial Cu or Ir atoms replace Ce4+ in CeO2 lattice due to the metal interaction in the colloidal structure, which can impact the catalyst's electronic properties. H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and CH4 temperature-programmed desorption (CH4-TPD) results disclose that the unique ternary surface exhibits excellent redox properties and strong adsorption capacity for methane, which can activate the first C-H bond of methane to methyl species, and then react with OH- to form methanol. The good stability in cyclic operation is an additional attribute, rendering this type of catalyst a "front-runner" in future catalyst development for direct methane-to-methanol. This composite catalyst design provides hope for developing ternary metal-oxide catalysts for functionalization of methane.
