Abstract:The current research status of carbon material and the future development tendency in the energy storage and conversion fields are reviewed.Carbon demonstrates many excellent physical and chemical properties owing to its unique structures and morphology.It has been widely used in energy storage and conversion devices.Carbon is a key material of catalyst supports,bipolar plates and gas diffusion layers in fuel cells,transparent conductive films and as a core material to form the carbon-silicon or all carbon p-n heterojunctions in solar cells.Carbon is also a significantly important electrode material in lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors.Moreover,Carbon has wide applications in the fields of heat storage,gas storage,nuclear energy,wind energy,and so on.It is suggested that carbon might be developed to be nano-structured and ordered in composites so that its performance in energy storage and conversion can be improved by functionalization and controlled synthesis.

Abstract:Inorganic, organic, and hybrid two-dimensional (2D) materials are being developed for ever-expanding numbers of applications, though energy and catalysis remain the main drivers of their development. We present overviews of bottom-up and top-down synthetic strategies of such materials and examine manufacturing scalability issues. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties and their modulation are highlighted because they are fundamental to the above-mentioned drivers. The burgeoning importance of heterostructures in such materials, particularly for catalysis and electrode design and function is stressed. Detailed attention is given to applications of 2D materials to the electrocatalysis reactions: oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction. Water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction by photocatalysis are also examined. A perspective of expected advances in the expansion of applications and types of 2D materials, with a focus on heterostructure development, is presented in the conclusion.

Abstract:About a decade after the energy transformation (Energiewende) started in Germany, it is now clear that the vision about a national all-electric energy system based upon solar and bio-based energy is not realistic. Such a hypothetical system cannot replace the function of a fossil-based system augmented with local renewable energy resources (RES) stemming from solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectricity. Over the last few years, the vision grew globally that a combination of local RES and a global trade system for RES via hydrogen and its derivatives will be the functional solution for defossilizing the energy supply systems. The core element for this vision is the interconversion between free electrons and electrons bound in chemical bonds. This is impossible without catalysis becoming the central family of technologies for creating renewable molecular energy carriers. They combine high storage capacities with compatibility to the fossil liquid and gaseous energy carriers for which we have global technologies already in place. The interconversion of free electrons into bound electrons allows the transport of RES and solves the large-scale storage issue introduced by the volatility of local RES alone. Energy storage and chemical energy conversion become two fundamental capabilities of future energy systems resting both on the command and mega-scale realization of catalytic processes. The investigation of model systems for heterogeneous catalysts catching some of the complexity of real catalyst systems may add substantially to an attempt to rationally design catalysts and catalytic materials to effectively harvest and store energy. Five case studies discuss an approach to model disperse metal catalysts and its use in thermal and photo chemical processes.

Abstract:<p>Oxygen electrocatalysis is of great significance in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Many strategies have been adopted for developing advanced oxygen electrocatalysts to promote these technologies. In this invited contribution, recent progress in understanding the oxygen electrochemistry from theoretical and experimental aspects is summarized. The major categories of oxygen electrocatalysts, namely, noble‐metal‐based compounds, transition‐metal‐based composites, and nanocarbons, are successively discussed for oxygen reduction and evolution. Design strategies of various oxygen electrocatalysts and their relationship on the structure–activity–performance are comprehensively addressed with the perspectives. Finally, the challenge and outlook for advanced oxygen electrocatalysts are discussed toward energy conversion and storage technologies.</p>

Abstract:The development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices (e.g., fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting) offers new opportunities to address global energy challenges; however, development is limited by the lack of suitable electrocatalysts to drive electrode reactions. To overcome this limitation, much effort has been devoted to advancing both fundamental understanding and practical application of electrocatalysis-related reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, etc. This Perspective covers the state-of-the-art technologies in the research and development of multifunctional electrocatalysts with a special emphasis on novel design strategies and a deeper discussion of the structure-activity-performance correlations. Future challenges as well as new opportunities in this exciting field are also discussed. The Perspective offers scientific ideas and sheds new light on multifunctional nanomaterial design and energy device performance optimization leading to efficient electrochemical energy conversion as power sources.

Abstract:Energy production and storage is one of the foremost challenges of the 21st century. Rising energy demands coupled with increasing materials scarcity have motivated the search for new materials for energy technology development. Nanomaterials are an excellent class of materials to drive this innovation due to their emergent properties at the nanoscale. In recent years, two dimensional (2D) layered materials have shown promise in a variety of energy related applications due to van der Waals interlayer bonding, large surface area, and the ability to engineer material properties through heterostructure formation. Despite notable results, their development has largely followed a guess and check approach. To realize the full potential of 2D materials, more efforts must be made towards achieving a mechanistic understanding of the processes that make these 2D systems promising. In this perspective, we bring attention to a series of techniques used to probe fundamental energy related processes in 2D materials, focusing on electrochemical catalysis and energy storage. We highlight studies that have advanced development due to mechanistic insights they uncovered. In doing so, we hope to provide a pathway for advancing our mechanistic understanding of 2D energy materials for further research.

Abstract:To meet the growing energy demands in a low-carbon economy, the development of new materials that improve the efficiency of energy conversion and storage systems is essential. Mesoporous materials offer opportunities in energy conversion and storage applications owing to their extraordinarily high surface areas and large pore volumes. These properties may improve the performance of materials in terms of energy and power density, lifetime and stability. In this Review, we summarize the primary methods for preparing mesoporous materials and discuss their applications as electrodes and/or catalysts in solar cells, solar fuel production, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. Finally, we outline the research and development challenges of mesoporous materials that need to be overcome to increase their contribution in renewable energy applications.

Abstract:This review is focused on integrating transition metal–based nanomaterials to form hybrid catalysts with heterointerfaces. Such heterointerfaces can help in manipulating the functionalities of the hybrid catalysts to enhance the performance of targeted energy conversion processes. Abstract:The discovery of durable, active, and affordable electrocatalysts for energy-related catalytic applications plays a crucial role in the advancement of energy conversion and storage technologies to achieve a sustainable energy future. Transition metal borides (TMBs), with variable compositions and structures, present a number of interesting features including coordinated electronic structures, high conductivity, abundant natural reserves, and configurable physicochemical properties. Therefore, TMBs provide a wide range of opportunities for the development of multifunctional catalysts with high performance and long durability. This review first summarizes the typical structural and electronic features of TMBs. Subsequently, the various synthetic methods used thus far to prepare nanostructured TMBs are listed. Furthermore, advances in emerging TMB-catalyzed reactions (both theoretical and experimental) are highlighted, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction, the oxygen reduction reaction, the carbon dioxide reduction reaction, the nitrogen reduction reaction, the methanol oxidation reaction, and the formic acid oxidation reaction. Finally, challenges facing the development of TMB electrocatalysts are discussed, with focus on synthesis and energy-related catalytic applications, and some potential strategies/perspectives are suggested as well, which will profit the design of more efficient TMB materials for application in future energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:The technological implementation of electrochemical energy conversion and storage necessitates the acquisition of high-performance electrocatalysts and electrodes. Carbon encapsulated nanoparticles have emerged as an exciting option owing to their unique advantages that strike a high-level activity–stability balance. Ever-growing attention to this unique type of material is partly attributed to the straightforward rationale of carbonizing ubiquitous organic species under energetic conditions. In addition, on-demand precursors pave the way for not only introducing dopants and surface functional groups into the carbon shell but also generating diverse metal-based nanoparticle cores. By controlling the synthetic parameters, both the carbon shell and the metallic core are facilely engineered in terms of structure, composition, and dimensions. Apart from multiple easy-to-understand superiorities, such as improved agglomeration, corrosion, oxidation, and pulverization resistance and charge conduction, afforded by the carbon encapsulation, potential core–shell synergistic interactions lead to the fine-tuning of the electronic structures of both components. These features collectively contribute to the emerging energy applications of these nanostructures as novel electrocatalysts and electrodes. Thus, a systematic and comprehensive review is urgently needed to summarize recent advancements and stimulate further efforts in this rapidly evolving research field.

Abstract:Continuous worldwide demands for more clean energy urge researchers and engineers to seek various energy applications, including electrocatalytic processes. Traditional energy-active materials, when combined with conducting materials and non-active polymeric materials, inadvertently leading to reduced interaction between their active and conducting components. This results in a drop in active catalytic sites, sluggish kinetics, and compromised mass and electronic transport properties. Furthermore, interaction between these materials could increase degradation products, impeding the efficiency of the catalytic process. Gels appears to be promising candidates to solve these challenges due to their larger specific surface area, three-dimensional hierarchical accommodative porous frameworks for active particles, self-catalytic properties, tunable electronic and electrochemical properties, as well as their inherent stability and cost-effectiveness. This review delves into the strategic design of catalytic gel materials, focusing on their potential in advanced energy conversion and storage technologies. Specific attention is given to catalytic gel material design strategies, exploring fundamental catalytic approaches for energy conversion processes such as the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and more. This comprehensive review not only addresses current developments but also outlines future research strategies and challenges in the field. Moreover, it provides guidance on overcoming these challenges, ensuring a holistic understanding of catalytic gel materials and their role in advancing energy conversion and storage technologies.
