Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.
A Robust Strategy of Solvent Choice to Synthesize Optimal Nanostructured Carbon for Efficient Energy Storage

Abstract:Despite great advances in carbon synthesis through solution chemistry, a long-standing question is how to choose solvents effectively. Herein, we establish a systematical strategy to answer this question, guided by both the difference of total Hansen solubility parameter and the relative energy difference between the solvent and the precursor. This approach can quickly and accurately screen out the “excellent” solvent or solvent mixture from a lot of possible candidates including single, binary and multicomponent systems to synthesize carbon materials with optimal nanostructure and high surface area. We further find it is convenient to get a series of “excellent” solvents by mixing different grades of solvents (“poor”, “fair”, and “good”). This finding gives more opportunities for solvent choice to fabricate well-designed carbons, and also provides an economic and eco-friendly synthetic route by selecting cheap, low- or non-toxic solvents. The robust strategy, which has been applied to different carbon precursors, has already succeeded as a proof of concept. As-synthesized carbons feature sphere-like superstructure and high surface area, delivering fast electrochemical kinetics, ultrahigh energy density and excellent high-rate lifespan in energy storage applications.

Abstract:Highly porous carbon cryogels with tunable pore structure and chemical composition were synthesized through controlled hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions using different chemicals as precursors and either NaOH or hexamine (C6N12N4) as catalysts. Gelation was followed with freeze drying to preserve the highly porous structure during solvent removal and controlled pyrolysis of the organic hydrogels and subsequent optional activation was performed. In addition, two different approaches were taken to modify the surface chemistry of porous carbon to introduce nitrogen or nitrogen-boron, leading to different porous structures and surface chemistry, as well as electrochemical properties. These carbon cryogels have been characterized and studied for energy storage applications. Specifically, they have been investigated as electrodes for electric double layer supercapacitors, high energy and high power density lithium-ion batteries with vanadium pentoxide deposited inside the pores, porous media for natural gas (methane) storage at reduced pressure, and scaffolds for hydride nanocomposites for greatly improved hydrogen storage. The relationship between processing conditions, chemical composition, pore structure, and energy storage properties are discussed.

Abstract:Fuel cells, supercapacitors and lithium-sulphur batteries are the typical energy conversion and storage devices of great significance in which carbon-based nanostructures could play irreplaceable role. The functionalized carbon-based nanostructures could be applied to fuel cells to lower Pt loading by highly dispersing and immobilizing Pt-based nanoparticles, or to totally get rid of Pt with the metal-free electrocatalytic ability themselves. The abundant nanostructures and morphologies, tunable compositions, high surface area, good conductivity, small volume expansion, as well as the low cost and environmental benignity make the carbon-based nanostructures have great potential as electrode materials of supercapacitors and lithium-sulphur batteries. In this talk I will give a brief introduction to the progressive advancements in our group about the synthesis [1,2], performance [3-9] and mechanism [8-10] of the carbon-based nanostructures, especially the nanocages, for this kind of energy conversion and storage. Special attention will be paid to the materials design by doping the carbon-based nanostructures with electron-rich N [3-5,8], electron-deficient B [9], and the both [10] to elucidate the correlation of the performance with the doping microstructures, which is a general interesting issue in developing the advanced carbon-based energy materials.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have been regarded as promising non-noble metal catalysts for renewable energy conversion system (e.g., fuel cells and metal-air batteries). In general, graphitic skeleton and porous structure are both critical for the performances of carbon-based catalysts. However, the pursuit of high surface area while maintaining high graphitization degree remains an arduous challenge because of the trade-off relationship between these two key characteristics. Herein, a simple yet efficient approach is demonstrated to fabricate a class of 2D N-doped graphitized porous carbon nanosheets (GPCNSs) featuring both high crystallinity and high specific surface area by utilizing amine aromatic organoalkoxysilane as an all-in-one precursor and FeCl3 ·6H2 O as an active salt template. The highly porous structure of the as-obtained GPCNSs is mainly attributed to the alkoxysilane-derived SiOx nanodomains that function as micro/mesopore templates; meanwhile, the highly crystalline graphitic skeleton is synergistically contributed by the aromatic nucleus of the precursor and FeCl3 ·6H2 O. The unusual integration of graphitic skeleton with porous structure endows GPCNSs with superior catalytic activity and long-term stability when used as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction and Zn-air batteries. These findings will shed new light on the facile fabrication of highly porous carbon materials with desired graphitic structure for numerous applications.

Abstract:The current research status of carbon material and the future development tendency in the energy storage and conversion fields are reviewed.Carbon demonstrates many excellent physical and chemical properties owing to its unique structures and morphology.It has been widely used in energy storage and conversion devices.Carbon is a key material of catalyst supports,bipolar plates and gas diffusion layers in fuel cells,transparent conductive films and as a core material to form the carbon-silicon or all carbon p-n heterojunctions in solar cells.Carbon is also a significantly important electrode material in lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors.Moreover,Carbon has wide applications in the fields of heat storage,gas storage,nuclear energy,wind energy,and so on.It is suggested that carbon might be developed to be nano-structured and ordered in composites so that its performance in energy storage and conversion can be improved by functionalization and controlled synthesis.
A lignin-derived N-doped carbon-supported iron-based nanocomposite as high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst

Abstract:Fuel cells are a promising renewable energy technology that depend heavily on noble metal Pt-based catalysts, particularly for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The discovery of new, efficient non-precious metal ORR catalysts is critical for the continued development of cost-effective, high-performance fuel cells. The synthesized carbon material showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the ORR, with half-wave potential (E1/2) and limiting current density (JL) of 0.88 V and 5.10 mA·cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. The material has a Tafel slope of (65 mV dec-1), which is close to commercial Pt/C catalysts (60 mV dec-1). Moreover, the prepared materials exhibited excellent performance when assembled as cathodes for zinc-air batteries. The power density reached 110.02 mW cm-2 and the theoretical specific capacity was 801.21 mAh g-1, which was higher than that of the Pt/C catalyst (751.19 mAh g-1). In this study, with the assistance of Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O, we introduce an innovative approach to synthesize advanced carbon materials, achieving precise control over the material's structure and properties. This research bridges a crucial gap in material science, with potential applications in renewable energy technologies, particularly in enhancing catalysts for fuel cells.

Abstract:Functionalized carbon materials are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis due to their unique properties such as adjustable surface properties, excellent thermal conductivity, high surface areas, tunable porosity, and moderate interactions with guest metals. The transformation of syngas into hydrocarbons (known as the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis) or oxygenates is an exothermic reaction and is typically catalyzed by transition metals dispersed on functionalized supports. Various carbon materials have been employed in syngas conversions not only for improving the performance or decreasing the dosage of expensive active metals but also for building model catalysts for fundamental research. This article provides a critical review on recent advances in the utilization of carbon materials, in particular the recently developed functionalized nanocarbon materials, for syngas conversions to either hydrocarbons or oxygenates. The unique features of carbon materials in dispersing metal nanoparticles, heteroatom doping, surface modification, and building special nanoarchitectures are highlighted. The key factors that control the reaction course and the reaction mechanism are discussed to gain insights for the rational design of efficient carbon-supported catalysts for syngas conversions. The challenges and future opportunities in developing functionalized carbon materials for syngas conversions are briefly analyzed.

Abstract:Driven by the serious ecological problems, it is urgent to explore high-efficiency sustainable energy technologies. Oxygen electrocatalysis acts as important half-reactions in the emerging electrochemical energy techniques including electrolysis and batteries. Gel composites exhibit the merits of rich porous, superior hydrophilic, and large specific surface area, which can significantly improve the electrolyte penetration and boost the kinetics process of oxygen electrocatalysis. In this invited contribution, the advances and challenges of a novel gel materials for oxygen electrocatalysis are summarized. Starting from the structure—activity—performance relationship of gel materials, synthetic routes of nanostructured gel materials, namely, radical polymerization, sol-gel method, hydrothermal/solvothermal reactions, and ligand-substitution method, are introduced. Afterward, the gel composites are divided into polymer-based, metal-based, and carbon-based materials in turn, and their applications in oxygen electrocatalysis are discussed respectively. At the end, the perspective and challenges for advanced gel oxygen electrocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:Carbon materials have been playing a significant role in the development of alternative clean and sustainable energy technologies. This review article summarizes the recent research progress on the synthesis of nanostructured carbon and its application in energy storage and conversion. In particular, we will systematically discuss the synthesis and applications of nanoporous carbon as electrodes for supercapacitors and electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, and the development of nanoporous media for methane gas storage, coherent nanocomposites for hydrogen storage, electrocatalysts and catalyst supports for fuel cells, new porous carbon for lithium–sulfur batteries, and porous carbon for lithium–oxygen batteries. The common challenges in developing simple, scalable, and environmentally friendly synthetic and manufacturing processes, in controlling the nanoscale and high level structures and functions, and in integrating such materials with suitable device architectures are reviewed. Possible new directions to overcome the current limitations on the performance are discussed.

Abstract:Biomass-based carbon materials have been considered as promising catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction due to their abundant heteroatom, renewability, and low cost. However, their practical electrocatalytic applications face a series of challenges, including insufficient pore structure, active site density, and their uneven distribution. Herein, we report an ingenious strategy to fabricate the biomass-derived carbon materials with hierarchical structures and high nitrogen doping. More specifically, microbial fermentation was used to achieve efficient and homogeneous nitrogen introduction by degrading the compact structure of lignocellulosic biomass. In addition, the precise regulation of the pore structure for carbon material was achieved by further introduction of appropriate oxygen during the pyrolysis process. The carbon catalyst prepared by the cascading treatment exhibited better performance. Notably, the C 5 exhibited the highest surface area (858.17 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant nitrogen-containing active sites, and high graphitization degree, thus, the C 5 demonstrates an outstanding oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance in a wide pH range (e.g., E onset : 0.85 V vs. RHE in neutral pH) and microbial fuel cells performance (maximum power density of 741.6 mWm −2 ). This study provides new ideas for the activity regulation of carbon electrocatalysts derived from biomass and will open the door to its large-scale application.

Abstract:Sustainable and cost-effective energy generation has become crucial for fulfilling present energy requirements. For this purpose, the development of cheap, scalable, efficient, and reliable catalysts is essential. Carbon-based heteroatom-doped, 3D, and mesoporous electrodes are very promising as catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Various carbon allotropes doped with a variety of heteroatoms can be utilized for cost-effective mass production of electrode materials. 3D porous carbon electrodes provide multiple advantages, such as large surface area, maximized exposure to active sites, 3D conductive pathways for efficient electron transport, and porous channels to facilitate electrolyte diffusion. However, it is challenging to synthesize and functionalize isotropic 3D carbon structures. Here, various synthesis processes of 3D porous carbon materials are summarized to understand how their physical and chemical properties together with heteroatom doping dictate the electrochemical catalytic performance. Prospects of attractive 3D carbon structural materials for energy conversion and efficient integrated energy systems are also discussed.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbon nanomaterials with well-defined architecture can afford a promising platform for effectively addressing energy and environmental concerns. Herein, a totally green and straightforward synthesis strategy for the fabrication of hierarchically porous carbon nanotubes (HPCNTs) by a simple carbonization treatment without any assistance of soft/hard templates and activation procedures is demonstrated. A high specific surface area of 1419 m(2) g(-1) and hierarchical micro-/meso-/macroporosity can be achieved for the HPCNTs. The unique porous architecture enables the HPCNTs serving as excellent electrode/host materials for high-performance supercapacitors and Li-sulfur batteries. The design strategy may pave a new avenue for the rational synthesis of hierarchically porous carbon nanostructures for high-efficient energy storage applications.

Abstract:Seeking sustainable and cost‐effective energy sources is one of the significant challenges for the sustainable development of modern society. To date, considerable expectations have been held for technologies, such as fuel cells and electrolyzers, where the performance strongly depends on electrochemical conversion processes that can generate and store chemical energy through the breaking or formation of chemical bonds. However, those advanced technologies are severely limited by the efficiency, selectivity, and durability of electrocatalysis. Thanks to their hierarchically porous architecture, compositional and structural tunability, and ease of functionalization, the family of gel materials opens exciting opportunities for advanced energy technologies. Unique advances in gel materials based on controllable compositions and functions enable gel electrocatalysts to potentially break the limitations of current materials, enhancing the device performance of electrochemical energy. Here, recent developments and challenges for nanostructured gel‐based materials for electrocatalysis applications are summarized. Future possibilities and challenges for gel electrocatalysts in terms of synthesis and applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most advanced crystal materials assembled by organic ligands as linkers and metal ions as center ions, which can be used as excellent materials for batteries and supercapacitors due to their high adjustable pore sizes, controllable structures, and specific surface areas. Carbon-based functional materials (e.g., graphene, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes) have excellent electrochemical properties, thermal stability and electrical conductivity. The controllable integration of MOFs and carbon-based functional materials can further enhance the electrochemical stability and electrical conductivity of pristine MOFs. The assembled MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites possess superior rate, cycling properties and high reversibility, enabling the obtained MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites to be applied in wider fields. This review summarizes the recent research progress of MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites in the field of batteries and supercapacitors. In addition, the difficulties and challenges encountered by MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites are put forward. Finally, the future development of MOF/carbon-based functional material composites in electrochemical energy storage devices is prospected.

Abstract:With the emerging requirement for clean renewable energy and storage system, the advancement of ecofriendly, low-cost, highly active electrode materials has expanded. Biomass, as a natural abundant, renewable source with diverse structure and rich heteroatoms serves as an alternative sustainable source. Recent studies demonstrated that various application of biomass-derived carbon materials is currently prevailing in electrocatalysis and energy storage and conversion system due to their tunable structure, multiple porosity and rich surface chemistry. Here, in this review, we primarily focus on the principal synthetic strategies of biomass-derived carbon, including pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, chemical vapor deposition, molten salt carbonization, template method along with the assist of microwave and ultrasonication approach. Then, this review strives to highlight the recent development of various dimensions of biomass-derived carbon nanostructure ranging from zero-dimensional carbon dots, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes/fibers/wires, two-dimensional carbon nanosheets to three-dimensional hierarchical carbon in view of pore size and surface area. We also summarize the primary application of biomass-based carbon nanostructure in versatile electrocatalysis, various kinds of secondary batteries, supercapacitors, and other energy related storage fields. Finally, current challenges in the development of biomass-based carbon and the large-scale production in industrial fields are addressed.

Abstract:Design of efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts still remains challenge in sustainable energy storage and conversion devices. To achieve sustainable development, it is of importance to prepare high-quality carbon-derived ORR catalysts from biomass. Herein, Fe 5 C 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were facilely entrapped in Mn, N, S-codoped carbon nanotubes (Fe 5 C 2 /Mn, N, S-CNTs) by a one-step pyrolysis of the mixed lignin, metal precursors and dicyandiamide. The resulting Fe 5 C 2 /Mn, N, S-CNTs had open and tubular structures, which exhibited positive shifts in the onset potential ( E onset = 1.04 V) and high half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.85 V), showing excellent ORR characteristics. Further, the typical catalyst-assembled Zn-air battery showed a high power density (153.19 mW cm −2 ) and good cycling performance as well as obvious cost advantage. The research provides some valuable insights for rational construction of low-cost and environmentally sustainable ORR catalysts in clean energy field, coupled by offering some valuable insights for reusing biomass wastes.

Abstract:The urgent need for sustainable energy development depends on the progress of green technologies, which have steered hot research areas into environmentally benign approaches via inexpensive precursors and abundant resources obtained directly from nature for energy devices such as fuel cells and supercapacitors. By using fermented rice as starting materials, we herein demonstrate a facile, green and scalable approach to synthesize porous N-doped carbon spheres characterised by high specific surface areas (2105.9 m(2) g(-1)) and high porosity (1.14 cm(3) g(-1)), which exhibit not only excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction with long-term stability for fuel cells, but also have excellent resistance to crossover effects and CO poisoning superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, the naturally derived porous N-doped carbon spheres, used as the active electrode materials, present superior performance for capacitors with a capacitance of 219 F g(-1) at a high discharge current density of 15 A g(-1) and good cycling stability for over 4400 cycles. This work shows a good example for taking advantage of the abundant resources provided by nature, and opening the door for the creation of functional materials with promising applications in high-performance renewable devices related to energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:A unique three-dimensional zanthoxylum leaves-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon frameworks (ZLPC) with hollow nanostructures have been developed by one-step carbonization and mixed metal salts-assisted co-activation process. Compared with the traditional template carbonization or two-step carbonization strategy, the presented method can combine carbonization, activation and heteroatom doping to improve the synthesis efficiency. Based on the unique three-dimensional framework structure, large specific surface area, high graphitization degree and effective nitrogen doping, the ZLPC exhibits satisfactory electrochemical performance. In particular, the symmetric supercapacitor based on ZLPC electrode material possesses high specific energy of 18.68 Wh kg−1 at a specific power of 225 W kg−1 operated in the voltage of 1.8 V in Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte and excellent cycle stability (92% after 20,000 charge cycle). These results provide a clear, simple and feasible synthesis strategy for large-scale converting sustainable biomass waste to porous carbon materials for energy storage and conversion applications.
