Abstract:In this paper, a stabilizing control algorithm for a class of discrete linear systems with delayed control is presentedbased on staged design idea. A timedelay transformation with past control information is introduced to transform a time-delay system into a linear delay-free system. The stabilizing controller to the primitive time-delay system is derived via a staged design method. The simulation study shows the effectiveness of the presented design method for an industrial electric heater example.

Abstract:A method is proposed for performance assessment of PID control loops subject to time-varying disturbance dynamics, which is often observed in industrial processes. The proposed method optimizes overall performance of the processes and presents a PID tradeoff curve which provides a useful lower bound on the achievable performance of the PID controller in terms of both the most significant disturbance rejection and the representative disturbance rejection. One can choose an optional benchmark to assess the PID control performance according to the tradeoff curve. The developed performance assessment technique is illustrated by simulation and industrial examples.

Abstract:A PID controller design procedure is developed in this paper for the control of processes with integrator and time delay. First, an optimal performance index is defined based on robust control theory. Second, two methods are proposed in the light of the characteristics of the system loop transfer function. A type 2 filter is introduced to meet the requirement of trajectory asymptoticall tracking. And a PID controller is obtained analytically. The feature of the controller is that the nominal performance can be evaluated quantitatively and the robustness can be adjusted conveniently.

Abstract:This paper presents an auto disturbance rejection PID controller and a parameter tuning method for time-delay systems to improve conventional PID controller performance.The model uses a two-order observer to compensate for the dynamics of unknown factors in the model and disturbances due to the difficulties in measuring higher-order differentials of time-delay system outputs. The auto disturbance rejection PID controller had four free parameters obtained using classical feedback theories,with three of the parameters derived from the Z-N tuning rule and the last free parameter chosen to ensure satisfactory dynamic performance.Simulations demonstrate that the controller provides excellent dynamic performance,adaptability,and robustness for time-delay systems.

Abstract:AbstractA new robust digital PI controller for a class of typical systems with uncertain time delays is developed for use in process industry. Using this Controller the satisfactory locations of poles of the closed‐loop systems will change slowly with the varied time delays, and the robust stability is guaranteed for the time varied time‐delay on a large scale. Simulation results show that the robust controller also works for the systems in the presence of unmodelled dynamics.

Abstract:A discrete-time optimal control method for linear systems with time-delay is proposed, in which a numerical algorithm for control implementation is presented. The controller is designed in terms of two cases that the time delay is respectively integer and non-integer times of the sampling period. The motion equation of system with time delay is transformed into standard discrete form that contains no time delay. Then, the optimal controller is designed by using the classical optimal control theory. The discrete quadratic function is used as objective function in design of the controller to guarantee good control efficiency on sampling points. In every step of computation of the deduced controller, it contains not only current step of state feedback but also linear combination of some former steps of control. Since the optimal controller is obtained directly from the time-delay differential equation, the control method proposed is prone to guarantee stability of the controlled structures. Instability in responses might occur if the system with time delay is controlled by the optimal controller designed with no consideration of time delay. Furthermore, the control method presented is available for the case of large time delay. Simulation results demonstrate that the continuous time performance index is superior to that of discrete-time and the control method presented ensures the stability of the controlled structures as well as the desired reduction in the maximum responses. The performance of the proposed control method under different sampling periods is investigated numerically to illustrate the feasibility for application to seismically excited linear systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a robust control method is proposed for rejecting the periodic disturbance. Cooperating with predictive function control (PFC), iterative learning (IL) is used to deal with the period mismatch, that is, iterative learning control (ILC) is used to handle the periodic errors while PFC doing its job of system process control Simulation results shows that the IL-PFC algorithm achieves significant improvement in rejecting periodic disturbance over the repetitive control scheme.

Abstract:Based on the H∞ frequency domain optimal control theory PID controllers were designed for open loop unstable processes with time delay. The design procedure is divided into two steps. First, the sufficient and necessary conditions that guarantee the internal stability of the closed loop systems are investigated. Second, an optimal performance index is defined, rational approximation for time delay is introduced, and explicit formulas of the PID controller are derived. The new method was compared with previous methods in simulation.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a PID tuning method which can simultaneously guarantee desired closed-loop time response and stability margin. For systems without time-delay, dominant pole placement method is used to guarantee the desired closed-loop time response and generalized-frequency method is adopted to give systems the desired stability margin. For systems with time-delay, however, the desired closed-loop time response and the stability margin are obtained through dominant pole placement method and gain-phase margin test method respectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness and confirm the validity of the proposed methodology, examples are provided for illustration.

First, the conditions that guarantee the stability of closed-loop system are investigated. Then an optimization method using H∞ performance criterion is developed for deriving the controller. Abstract:Two new two-degree-of-freedom control structures were proposed for doubly integrating plants with time delay, in one of which the setpoint tracking controller is designed by using the H2 optimal performance specification and a conventional derivative controller is utilized for the setpoint tracking. Both of them adopt the same closed-loop for disturbance rejection between the plant input and output. By proposing the desired closed-loop complementary sensitivity function the disturbance observer is inversely derived, and meanwhile the sufficient and necessary conditions for holding the closed-loop robust stability are provided. The proposed method can be directly employed to reject the slope type load disturbances for industrial processes with one integrator and time delay. The simulation examples demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over recent other approaches.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the H∞ fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control problem for delayed Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems in the discrete-time setting. Based on the current and historical measurement data, a novel T-S fuzzy PID controller is developed with which the integral-loop is generated based on a fixed number of past measurements for the purpose of reducing the computational burden, where a special augmentation scheme is adopted to simplify the closed-loop system. The aim of this paper is to design the PID controller parameters such that the closed-loop T-S fuzzy system is exponentially stable and the prescribed H∞ disturbance attenuation performance is achieved. By adopting the Lyapunov stability theory and the linear matrix inequality technology, sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of the desired fuzzy PID controllers. In addition, an iterative optimization procedure is proposed to design the controller parameters according to the cone complementarity linearization algorithm. Finally, a numerical simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of our proposed design scheme.

Abstract:The analytical proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, the tuning of which depends on simple formulas with one adjustable parameter, have been developed for processes with time delay. In this paper, using a simple method called dual-locus diagram, the solutions to the problems of stabilizing stable, integrating and unstable processes with time delay using analytical PID controllers are presented, respectively. For the stable and integrating process, the stabilizing range of the adjustable parameter is only related to the delay of the plant, while, for the unstable process, it depends on both the time constant of the plant and the ratio of the delay to the time constant. With the available stabilizing solution, the time-consuming stability check can be avoided in the controller application. Copyright © 2005 IFAC

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient method for designing proportional-integra-derivative (PID) controllers for runaway processes with time delay. The method is developed based on the H(infinity) control theory in frequency domain. The constraints imposed by the internal stability and asymptotic properties of the closed-loop system are first investigated, a new procedure is then developed for analytically designing the controller, and simple design formulas are obtained. It is shown that the new controller can be designed to meet specified time domain performances. Typical design examples are provided to illustrate the proposed method.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 1857-1883, June 2024. In this paper, we are concerned with the tracking performance and antidisturbance ability of the widely used proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers in practice. Towards this end, we consider a basic class of second-order nonlinear stochastic control systems subject to model uncertainties and external disturbances, and focus on the ability of the classical PID controller to track time-varying reference signals. First, under some suitable conditions on the system nonlinear functions, reference signals, and external disturbances, we show that such control systems can be stabilized in the mean square sense, provided that the three PID gains are selected from a stability region constructed in the paper. Besides, it is shown that the steady-state tracking error has an upper bound proportional to the sum of the varying rates of reference signals, the varying rates of external disturbances, and the intensity of random noises. Meanwhile, its proportional coefficient depends on the selection of PID gains, which can be made arbitrarily small by choosing suitably large PID gains. Finally, by introducing a desired transient process which is shaped from the reference signal, a new PID tuning rule is presented, which can guarantee both the expected steady state and transient tracking performance.

Abstract:This paper proposes an effective control method aimed at the linear system with time-varying delay. We address the problem by means of switching among a finite family of candidate controllers. Our control method is based on semi-discretization method and hysteresis-based switching algorithms, where the former is introduced to design the candidate controller under one fixed time delay and the latter acts as the principal law of the switching. We prove the stability of our switching delay system and conclude that three factors, the size of the candidate controller set, the value of the switching coefficient, the changing rate of the delay, affect the system's stability, which can also be demonstrated by several groups of experiments. Simulation results show the correctness of our design.
