Abstract:A novel decentralised sewage treatment reactor (DSTR) for treating domestic sewage in rural areas was designed and investigated. The reactor was started aerobically after inoculation with biomass; the amount of initial mixed liquid suspended solids was 1.5 g/L. Oxygen was supplied to the reactor and the dissolved oxygen concentration was maintained at 1.3 +/- 0.2mg/L. The pollutant removal performance was investigated, and the average removal efficiencies of total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), NH4+-N, suspended solids, and turbidity were 76%, 77.15%, 84.17%, and 83.93%, respectively. The DSTR exhibited good performance compared with the traditional activated sludge (AS) reactor. The resistance to impact load of the DSTR was superior to that of the AS reactor during surface load experiments. During the 120 days of operation, no sludge bulking was observed. The DSTR effluent NH4+-N and TCOD levels were a little higher than those for the AS reactor, but the disparity was not major.

Abstract:Model experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of a siphon sediment cleansing set (SSCS) for preventing sediment deposition on the combined sewer overflow (CSO) chamber bottom. The results confirmed the effectiveness of siphon suction in sediment removal in the chamber. The sediment scour test revealed that the equilibrium scour depth correlated significantly with the siphon-lift capacity of the SSCS, which was a function of the initial siphon head and the cross-sectional area ratio between the CSO chamber and the siphon.
Experimental study on inhibition effect of chemical conditioning on low permeability sewage sludge layer under conditions of vacuum preloading

Abstract:Due to the low permeability layers formed around drainage plates under conditions of sew-age sludge vacuum preloading can decrease the dewatering efficiency,vacuum filtration installations and tests are used to simulate and study the inhibition effects on the low permeability layers, taking two methods of adding different chemical conditioners into the sludge above the filter ( 0 to 5 cm ) and changing pore-opening size of geotexiles. During the filtration process, cumulative amount of filtration(CAF),filtration rate(FR), and solid content(SC) are calculated;after the test, sludge re-sidual water content( SRWC) is obtained by slicing the sludge samples at different heights. The re-sults indicate that the enlargement of geotexile pore size can not improve the dewatering efficiency, and the low permeability layer are formed in 1 h after the test. The utilization of ferric chloride, lime , and fly ash at vicinity area of filter shows the best dewatering efficiency and inhibits the forma-tion of low permeability layer, getting a water content of 200% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . And the conditioners of ferric chloride with cationic polyacrylamide or chitosan obtain a water content of 250% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . In actual engineering, the combination of ferric chloride, lime, and fly ash can be used efficiently.

Abstract:A good inner component in a biological fluidized bed reactor can significantly change bubble behaviors(inhibiting bubble growth,breaking bubble into pieces,etc.),improve the fluidization quality of fluid,enhance the mass transfer and reaction among different phases,keep a high concentration of activated sludge,reduce sludge yield,etc.The improvement of inner components in biological fluidized bed reactors is reviewed in this paper.The main structure characteristics and functions of three different types of inner components,including horizontal and vertical inner components,and biofilm-packing material,are analyzed.The spiral inner component invented by our lab is also presented.Some problems on inner component are posed for future research.

Abstract:The wide utilization of the activated sludge process for treating domestic wastewater has resulted in the huge production of excess sludge, posing a serious disposal problem. In the present study, a humic-activated sludge-anoxic-oxic-settling-anaerobic (HS-A-OSA) process was used to study the function of humic activated sludge on the efficiency of sludge reduction. For this purpose, two-anoxic-oxic-settling-anaerobic (A-OSA) experimental devices were fabricated. Between the two devices, one device with the composite humic biological filler served as the HS-A-OSA process and the other device served as the comparison. The processes were operated with a mixed liquor suspended solids concentration of 3,000 mg/L for a period of 60 days. The sludge internal recycling was 100% from the sedimentation basin to the anaerobic sludge reaction basin, followed by the anoxic basin. The return sludge residence time was 5.5 h with both devices. During the operation period, 23.2% of excess sludge reduction was observed. The chemical oxygen demand and total nitrogen removal efficiencies improved in the HS-A-OSA process. Based on the variations in polysaccharide, protein, humic acid and extracellular polymeric substances concentrations in different basins, the main reason for improved sludge reduction was that the sludge disintegration velocity of the HS-A-OSA process was higher than the A-OSA process.

Abstract:The new design of internal flotation components and the use of biogas were employed to develop a novel anaerobic self-flotation (ASF) reactor. Compared with the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, the removal efficiencies of total chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS) of the ASF reactor were higher than 90% under high SS concentration and high volumetric organic loading rate (OLR). The biogas flotation, sludge bed retention, and effluent washout accounted for 60%, 30%, and 10% of SS mass, respectively, proving that the biogas flotation was the main mechanism of SS removal in the ASF reactor. Extracellular polymer substance, mainly consisting of polysaccharide (PS) and protein (PN), was found to promote the SS removal by biogas flotation via the scum formation at the ratio of 294.12 g-VS/g-PS and 103.09 g-VS/g-PN. The EPS yield was determined as 2.3 ± 0.6 g-PS/g-COD and 11.5 ± 2.6 g-PN/g-COD at the OLR of 60 kg/(m3 day). The biogas production was revealed to enhance the SS removal by providing flotation driving force and by decreasing the scum density. A model was established to describe the quantitative relationship between flotation scum and OLR. This work would shed light on the high SS wastewater treatment challenge of high-rate anaerobic processes by using biogas flotation.
A Comparative Study Of Conventional Coagulation And Sludge Recycling Enhanced Coagulation For Low-Turbidity Source Water: The Effect And Applicability

Abstract:Low coagulation efficiency and high consumption of coagulant are two challenges for low turbidity source water treatment, and sludge recycling enhanced coagulation is generally considered as an effective solution. The effect and applicability of coagulation with sludge recycling was investigated, compared with conventional treatment. In conventional coagulation, the removal efficiency of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) was better than poly aluminum sulfate (PAS) and poly ferric aluminum chloride (PFAC). The economic dosage was 15 mg/L, and the corresponding removal efficiencies of turbidity, CODMn and UV254 were 62.0%, 31.7%, 32.9%, respectively. Recycling sludge could improve the removal efficiency. When 10 mg/L of PAC and sludge with recycle ratio of 6% were added in order, the turbidity, CODMn and UV254 removal efficiencies were 78.8%, 41.6% and 35.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, recycling sludge process increased the system's abilities to resist acid, alkali and turbidity fluctuations. When the initial turbidities were 2NTU and 4NTU, the optimal recycle ratios were both 6%. The floc structures formed from recycling sludge process were tighter and more regular, indicating a better sedimentation property.

Abstract:Sludge from wastewater treatment processes with high water content and large volume has become an inevitable issue in environmental management. Due to the challenging dewatering properties of sludge, current mechanical dewatering methods are no longer sufficient to meet the escalating water content standards of sludge. This paper summarizes the characteristics of various sludge and raises reasons for the their dewaterability differences. Affected by extracellular polymeric substances , biological sludge is hydrophilic and negatively charged, which limits the dewatering degree. The rheological properties, flocs, ionic composition , and solid phase concentration of the sludge also influence the dewatering to some extent. For these factors, the chemical conditioning measures with simple operation and excellent effect improve its dewaterability, which mainly include flocculation/coagulation, acid/alkali treatment, advanced oxidation, surfactant treatment and combined treatment. There is a growing necessity to explore the development of new chemical conditioning agents, even though traditional agents continue to remain widely used. However, the development of these new agents should prioritize finding a balance between various factors such as efficiency, effectiveness, ease of operation, environmental safety, and cost-effectiveness. Electrochemical dewatering enhances solid-liquid separation, and its coupling with chemical conditioning is also an excellent means to further reduce water content. In addition, the improvement of press filter is an effective way, which is influenced by pressure, processing time, sludge cake thickness and pore structure, filter media etc. In general, it is essential to develop new conditioning agents and enhance mechanical filtration press technology based on a thorough understanding of various sludge properties. Concurrently, an in-depth study of the principles of mechanical pressure filtration will contribute to establishing a theoretical foundation for effective deep sludge dewatering and propel further advancements in this field.

Abstract:Two SBBR systems, designated FSCSBBR (floating spherical carrier) and SCSBBR (multi-faceted polyethylene suspension carrier), were constructed for in-situ sludge reduction. The effects of the operating temperature (T), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on in-situ sludge reduction in the two SBBR systems were investigated, and the optimum carrier and operating parameters were determined. The results showed that an FSC carrier exhibited a better in-situ sludge reduction efficiency and contaminant removal efficiency than an SC carrier. The optimal operating parameters were a temperature of 25°C, HRT of 12 h and DO concentration of 4–5 mg/L, and the observed sludge yield was 0.21 ± 0.10 g MLSS/g COD. The analysis of biofilm samples showed that FSCSBBR biofilms were richer in microbial species and exhibited higher diversity than SCSBBR biofilms. Biofilm sludge hydrolysis and cytolysis promoted in-situ sludge reduction.

Abstract:Solidification/stabilization(S/S)is an effective technique to disposal sewage sludge.It adds solidifying materials to the sludge.The solidifying materials and sludge occurs a series of physical and chemical reactions.It improves the mechanical strength and stabilizes the heavy metal pollutants in the sludge and can achieve the purpose of the safe disposal of sludge and resource utilization.It is therefore of significance to develop new technology for the treatment and disposal of sludge.This paper is based on the achievements at home and abroad for the recent years in this field and summarizes the advances of several important aspects on this topic.They include the types of sludge,species of solidifying agent,main measures of solidified sludge effect,factors that affects the solidified effect and solidifying/stabilizing mechanisms.The following important knowledge can be drawn:Sludge can be classified into river/lake sludge,municipal sludge and industrial sludge by the source.Due to the big differences of the sludge composition,the corresponding disposal methods are also different.For the widely used S/S technique,the most commonly used solidification agent can be divided into two categories:inorganic and organic agents.The dominant inorganic solidifying agent includes cement,lime,and uses some industrial slag,clay as auxiliary material.the two important indexes are the unconfined compressive strength and leaching toxicity in terms of main measure indexes.The initial moisture content,curing time,and the species of solidifying agent and ratio and the pH and Eh values are the main types of factors which affects the solidifying/stabilizing effect. Solidifying agent and its products form the skeleton in the sludge.The sludge particle is cemented and its pore is filled by the physical and chemical reactions,to achieve treatment effect.Harmful substances will be enclosed in the curing body by physical package,precipitation and absorption between solidifying agent and its products,to achieve the purpose of harmless and stabilization.Finally,based on the above understanding and current research shortages in this topic,some important research topics that should be well investigated in future are proposed.They include increasing the permeability coefficient of sludge,understanding the deformation properties of the cured body,development of new technology for multiple heavy metal ions stabilization,models for simulating and predicting the dissolution and migration of heavy metal ions and development of new solidifying agent.

Abstract:Although non-mechanical valves have been extensively used in circulating fluidized bed boilers to transfer circulating ash against a pressure barrier and to provide pressure seal so as to avoid gas reflux, their control mechanisms have not yet been well known. In this paper, a new fluid-bed recycle device is introduced in detail. The effects of aeration locations on solids circulating flow rate were discussed. The experimental results showed that the recycle device can well control solids flow rate.

Abstract:To improve the defects of low electroosmosis efficiency in the later stage and high energy consumption of conventional vacuum preloading combined with electroosmosis, the vacuum preloading-stepped electroosmosis method (VP-SEO) with prefabricated horizontal drain (PHD) was proposed for dredged sludge in this paper. In the test, waste concrete fine aggregate was used as the horizontal drainage cushion to alleviate the clogging of the PHD. The results showed that compared to vacuum preloading combined with electroosmosis (VP-EO), more drainage channels throughout the soil were produced after VP-SEO treatment, and VP-SEO could maintain a higher drainage efficiency in the later stage of treatment with improved final drainage and consolidation. The sludge treated by VP-SEO showed a significant increase in vane shear strength and a reduction in water content. Furthermore, the water loss and shrinkage of the soil surface after VP-SEO treatment were more uniform than that of VP-EO treatment, and the electroosmotic energy consumption and anode erosion were also lower. This study provides an effective improvement scheme for solidifying sludge with a high water content by conventional vacuum preloading combined with electroosmosis method.

Abstract:Decentralized treatment of wastewater in rural areas usually has several challenges, which include large fluctuations in pollutant concentration and water quantity, complicated operation and maintenance of conventional biochemical treatment equipment, resulting in poor stability and a low compliance rate of the wastewater treatment process. In order to solve the above problems, a new integration reactor is designed, which uses gravity and aeration tail gas self-reflux technology to realize the reflux of sludge and the nitrification liquid, respectively. The feasibility and operation characteristics of its application for decentralized wastewater treatment in rural areas are explored. The results demonstrated that, under constant influent, the device showed strong tolerance to the shock of pollutant load. The chemical oxygen demand, NH4+-N, total nitrogen and total phosphorus fluctuated in the ranges of 95-715 mg/L, 7.6-38.5 mg/L, 9.32-40.3 mg/L and 0.84-4.9 mg/L, respectively. The corresponding effluent compliance rates were 82.1%, 92.8%, 96.4% and 96.3%, respectively. When the wastewater discharge was non-constant and the maximum single-day Qmax/Qmin reached 5, all indicators of the effluent met the relevant discharge standard. The integrated device also demonstrated high phosphorus enrichment levels in its anaerobic zone; the concentration of phosphorus reached a maximum of 26.9 mg/L, which created a good environment for phosphorus removal. The microbial community analysis showed that sludge digestion, denitrification, and phosphorus-accumulating bacteria all played an important role in pollutant treatment.

Abstract:An advanced treatment experiment was made on secondary effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant by utilizing densadeg.Removal efficiency of SS,TP and COD under different sludge reflux ratio and characteristics of sludge settling were studied.Experimental results showed that different sludge reflux ratio plays an influential role in contaminant removal and sludge settling.When the reflux ratio was 50%,the effluent SS,TP and COD were 10 mg/L,0.48 mg/L and 49 mg/L,respectively.Effluent water satisfied standard of Class One level A(GB18918—2002),and settling performance of the sludge was good.The removal effect of suspended particles by using densadeg was obvious,suspended substances whose particle diameters were more than 3 μm could be removed effectively;those whose particle diameters were more than 12 μm could be completely removed.

Abstract:This study developed a new type of micro-pressure swirl reactor (MPSR) for treating rural domestic sewage with variable water volume in northern China. The transformation of a traditional aeration tank to MPSR was mainly divided into three steps. Firstly, the aeration device was installed on one side of the aeration tank. Secondly, most of the top cover plate was sealed. Finally, the liquid level-lifting zone was set to achieve micro-pressure. The study measured the flow velocity and dissolved oxygen (DO) distribution in the main reaction zone of MPSR, studied the effects of MPSR sewage treatment in continuous operation mode and sequential batch operation mode, and analyzed the main microbial species. The experimental results showed that a stable circular circle flow and a spatial DO gradient in MPSR were formed when the aeration rate of MPSR was 0.2 m3/h. Through the MPSR sewage treatment experiment in two operation modes, it could meet the current requirements of rural environmental pollution controlled in China. Analysis of the types of microorganisms showed that microorganisms with different functions gathered in different zones of the MPSR due to the different dissolved oxygen environment and water flow environment, which further improved the ability of MPSR to simultaneously remove nitrogen and phosphorus.

Abstract:Activated sludge process with anaerobic side-stream reactors (SR) in the sludge recirculation line can achieve insitu sludge reduction. But sludge reduction efficiency (SRE) is limited with low cell lysis and particle organic matter hydrolysis rates under short hydraulic retention time of SR for practical application. This study firstly inserted alternating micro-aerobic/anaerobic conditions (AMAC) and packing carriers into SR with low hydraulic retention time for improving SRE. The effects of AMAC and packing carriers on sludge rheology properties, molecular characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial communities were investigated. Results showed that AMAC coupled packing carriers achieved SRE by 51.09% with efficient effluent pollutant removal. AMAC specialized inactive particle organic matter hydrolysis and active cell lysis in the micro-aerobic and anaerobic SR, respectively. Packing carriers intensified this function division effect. This effect weakened colloidal entanglement of flocs. It intensified the cell lysis in mainstream aerobic tank, causing the accumulation of refractory lignins in DOM. The higher utilization of released bioavailable DOM decreased microbial activity. Overall, the improved SRE favored the declined DOM bioavailability by inserting AMAC and packing carriers in SR. The sludge reduction-related bacteria like slow growing (Dechloromonas), predatory (Norank_Saprospiraceae), and hydrolytic/fermentative bacteria (Chelatococcus, Pseudomonas, Tolumonas, and Unclassified_Bacteroidia) were involved in decreasing DOM bioavailability. This study advanced our knowledge about the effects of AMAC and packing carriers on in-situ sludge reduction systems. This research also showed how AMAC and packing carriers enhanced the sludge lysis/hydrolysis for sludge reduction.

Abstract:Excess sludge is the product of sewage treatment plants. With continuous perfection of municipal sewage treatment facilities in China, sludge output increases as a result of the growth of sewage treatment plants. Excess sludge has complicated compositions, including heavy metals, PPCPs, persistent organic pollutants. It owns high contents of organic matters and water. High-efficiency and low-cost dehydration of sludge is the key of sludge disposal. How to improve sludge dehydration efficiency is the research hotspot in the world. In this study, effects of hydrogen peroxide content and pH on sludge dehydration were discussed by chemical disintegration technique. The optimal hydrogen peroxide content and pH were discussed, aiming to search a high-efficiency sludge conditioner.

Abstract:Ultrasonic was applied in the SBR unit to reduce the amount of excess sludge. When the reflux ratio was 2/14 with ultrasound condition 25 kHz,1.6 W/mL,15 min,the daily sludge generation declined to 82.4 mg/(L·d),which was nearly 58.8% decrease than that of untreated sludge in the SBR.And the reduction of sludge didn't deteriorate the setting characteristic of SBR system. The effuent COD_ Cr had met the Class Ⅱ of Discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant. The effluent phosphorous was a little high because the ultrasound irradiation enhanced the phosphorous release ability.When the reflux ratio was 3/14 with ultrasound condition 25 kHz,1 W/mL,10 min,there was nearly no excess sludge discharged.
