Abstract:This study proposed a multi-scale, object-based classification analysis of SPOT-5 imagery to map Moso bamboo forest. A three-level hierarchical network of image objects was developed through multi-scale segmentation. By combining spectral and textural properties, both the classification tree and nearest neighbour classifiers were used to classify the image objects at Level 2 in the three-level object hierarchy. The feature selection results showed that most of the object features were related to the spectral properties for both the classification tree and nearest neighbour classifiers. Contextual information characterized by the composition of classified image objects using the class-related features assisted the detection of shadow areas at Levels 1 and 3. Better classification results were achieved using the nearest neighbour algorithm, with both the producer’s and user’s accuracy higher than 90% for Moso bamboo and an overall accuracy of over 85%. The object-based approach toward incorporating textural and contextual information in classification sequence at various scales shows promise in the analysis of forest ecosystems of a complex nature.
Mangrove Classification from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Hyperspectral Images Using Object-Oriented Methods Based on Feature Combination and Optimization

Abstract:Accurate and timely acquisition of the spatial distribution of mangrove species is essential for conserving ecological diversity. Hyperspectral imaging sensors are recognized as effective tools for monitoring mangroves. However, the spatial complexity of mangrove forests and the spectral redundancy of hyperspectral images pose challenges to fine classification. Moreover, finely classifying mangrove species using only spectral information is difficult due to spectral similarities among species. To address these issues, this study proposes an object-oriented multi-feature combination method for fine classification. Specifically, hyperspectral images were segmented using multi-scale segmentation techniques to obtain different species of objects. Then, a variety of features were extracted, including spectral, vegetation indices, fractional order differential, texture, and geometric features, and a genetic algorithm was used for feature selection. Additionally, ten feature combination schemes were designed to compare the effects on mangrove species classification. In terms of classification algorithms, the classification capabilities of four machine learning classifiers were evaluated, including K-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), random forests (RF), and artificial neural networks (ANN) methods. The results indicate that SVM based on texture features achieved the highest classification accuracy among single-feature variables, with an overall accuracy of 97.04%. Among feature combination variables, ANN based on raw spectra, first-order differential spectra, texture features, vegetation indices, and geometric features achieved the highest classification accuracy, with an overall accuracy of 98.03%. Texture features and fractional order differentiation are identified as important variables, while vegetation index and geometric features can further improve classification accuracy. Object-based classification, compared to pixel-based classification, can avoid the salt-and-pepper phenomenon and significantly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of mangrove species classification. Overall, the multi-feature combination method and object-based classification strategy proposed in this study provide strong technical support for the fine classification of mangrove species and are expected to play an important role in mangrove restoration and management.

Abstract:IKONOS 1-m panchromatic and 4-m multispectral images were used to map mangroves in a study site located at Punta Galeta on the Caribbean coast of Panama. We hypothesized that spectral separability among mangrove species would be enhanced by taking the object as the basic spatial unit as opposed to the pixel. Three different classification methods were investigated: maximum likelihood classification (MLC) at the pixel level, nearest neighbour (NN) classification at the object level, and a hybrid classification that integrates the pixel and object-based methods (MLCNN). Specifically for object segmentation, which is the key step in object-based classification, we developed a new method to choose the optimal scale parameter with the aid of Bhattacharya Distance (BD), a well-known index of class separability in traditional pixel-based classification. A comparison of BD values at the pixel level and a series of larger scales not only supported our initial hypothesis, but also helped us to determine an optimal scale at which the segmented objects have the potential to achieve the best classification accuracy. Among the three classification methods, MLCNN achieved the best average accuracy of 91.4%. The merits and restrictions of pixel-based and object-based classification methods are discussed.

Abstract:Classification of mangrove species is very important for monitoring and protecting the coastal ecosystem. In this paper, we present a new spectral-spatial classifier that uses multi-spectral image captured by the ZY-3 satellite to distinguish seven mangrove species in the Beihai ecological monitoring area, Guangxi, China. In order to extract the spatial information, a correlative filter is designed to incorporate neighborhood correlative information before classification. Moreover, a feature optimization algorithm based on dictionary learning is applied to reduce the noise and improve the discrimination of sample features. Finally, a classification method using joint sparse representation is proposed to extract the mangrove region and recognize seven mangrove species. The classification results show that the major species in the study area are Aegiceras cornicu-latum and Avicenna marina that conform to field investigations. The overall accuracy reaches 95.62% and the kappa coefficient achieves the value of 0.9380. Hence, the accuracy and efficiency of our proposed method are demonstrated in mangrove species classification.

Abstract:Mangroves are one of the important components of Earth's carbon sinks. The current problems of base-model composition strategy of ensemble learning and image features combination are still major challenges in mangrove species classification. This paper constructed two novel adaptive ensemble learning frameworks (AME-EL and AOS-EL) to explored the effect of combing different spatial-resolution optical and SAR images on classification performance, and evaluated the ability in mangrove species classification between dual-polarization and full-polarization SAR images. Finally, we used the SHAP method to explore the effects of different feature interactions on mangrove species classification. The results indicated that: (1) AME-EL and AOS-EL achieve the fine classification of mangrove species with overall accuracies between 77.50% and 94.77%. (2) Combination of Gaofen-7 multispectral and Gaofen-3 SAR improved the classification accuracy for Kandelia candel , with the F1 score increasing from 26.4% to 40.2%. (3) The VV/VH polarization performed better in the classification, with the F1 scores for Aegiceras corniculatum and Kandelia candel were higher than those of HH/HV and AHV polarization by 7%−16.1% and 5.9%−16.1%, respectively. (4) SAR features interacted well with other spectral features, which made a strong contribution to the classification accuracy of mangrove species, and effectively affect the prediction results.

Abstract:Airbone hyperspectral Images acquired by HyMap hyperspectral remote sensor were used to classify mangrove types at Futian national mangrove forest reservation, Shenzhen, China. The objective of the Study is to obtain distribution and area of different types of the mangrove forest from the hyperspectral images. Airborne hyperspectral images have the characteristics of clear outline, color enrichment, distinct gradation by choosing the right bands and properly processes. Differences among mangrove, beach, small rivers and sea area were very clear. Moreover, the differences among different types of mangrove appeared. A whole image processing approaches of the airborne hyperspectral images aimed at mangrove inner structure mapping had been carried out, including data preparation, mangrove forest selection, mangrove type classification and post-classification processes. The area and distribution of major types of mangrove in Futian reservation were gained through the approaches.
Object-oriented Classification for Satellite Remote Sensing of Wetlands:A Case Study in Southern Hangzhou Bay Area

Abstract:Based on data of Landsat TM imagery and the Feature Extraction module of ENVI EX software,object-oriented method was applied to the remote sensing image classification of wetlands in southern Hangzhou Bay area.And analytical comparisons of object-oriented classification and traditional pixel-based methods(maximum likelihood method,artificial neural net method and support vector machines method) were conducted on the basis of the classification results in order to systematically assess the utility of object-oriented classification of wetlands with medium and low resolution satellite imagery.The research showed that compared with the traditional classification methods which only consider the spectral characteristics of the targets,object-oriented classification comprehensively utilizes more detailed information of the remote sensing imagery(e.g.,spectral characteristics,texture feature,spatial relationship,color space,band ration).Thus,it gains a better discriminability for some specific wetland landscapes(e.g.,intertidal mud,lake wetlands,river wetlands),which involve complex forms,fuzzy boundaries,and severe spectral and pixel mixed problems,and yields higher classification accuracy(an overall accuracy of 88.80% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.876 5 were achieved in this study).Object-oriented method extracts the so called 'object' which consists of some homogeneous pixels in the process of classification,and the objects show a low degree of fragmentation through a reasonable level of image segmentation.Therefore,this method significantly reduces the disturbance of salt-and-pepper noise in the classification results and generates more accurate results.In contrast,the landscapes extracted by pixel-based methods are made up of discrete pixels,fall short of representing the shapes and boundaries of the targets clearly,and also fail to block out the noise phenomena.It is found that image segmentation plays an essential role in the process of object-oriented classification,and 60% is a proper parameter of segmentation and merger scale for the object-oriented classification of medium and low resolution satellite imagery.Furthermore,the Feature Extraction module of ENVI EX enables a preview of the results of image segmentation real-time as a good approach for image segmentation,one that is more convenient and effective than other comparable softwares.Some important scientific issues existing in the process of object-oriented classification,e.g.,the evaluation of image segmentation precision,the identification of optimal segmentation scale,the optimization of feature space,entail further research.
Classification of Mangroves by Data Fusion and Neural Networks

Abstract:Guangdong in south China has the largest area of mangrove wetlands in the country.However,the mangrove wetlands have been rapidly diminishing because of the fast urbanization.Remote sensing can be used to obtain the information about mangrove wetlands,such as the monitoring of mangrove changes and classification of mangrove types.The information is very important for wetland conservation in rapid growing areas.It is very important to obtain the information about the changes of mangroves and the distribution of mangrove types,which is required for decision-making.In this study,SAR and TM images are used to classify the mangrove using unsupervised,supervised,neural networks and data fusion methods.And three types of data fusion such as IHS,Wavelet and PCA are used in mangrove classification.The study demonstrates that radar remote sensing can provide useful information for mangrove study.It is able to produce more accurate classification because of its excellent capability of penetration than optical remote sensing.This study indicates that the PCA fusion of SAR images with TM images can provide better classification of mangrove than other common methods.
Fine-Scale Mangrove Species Classification Based on UAV Multispectral and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Using Machine Learning

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems play an irreplaceable role in coastal environments by providing essential ecosystem services. Diverse mangrove species have different functions due to their morphological and physiological characteristics. A precise spatial distribution map of mangrove species is therefore crucial for biodiversity maintenance and environmental conservation of coastal ecosystems. Traditional satellite data are limited in fine-scale mangrove species classification due to low spatial resolution and less spectral information. This study employed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to acquire high-resolution multispectral and hyperspectral mangrove forest imagery in Guangxi, China. We leveraged advanced algorithms, including RFE-RF for feature selection and machine learning models (Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Random Forest (RF), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM)), to achieve mangrove species mapping with high classification accuracy. The study assessed the classification performance of these four machine learning models for two types of image data (UAV multispectral and hyperspectral imagery), respectively. The results demonstrated that hyperspectral imagery had superiority over multispectral data by offering enhanced noise reduction and classification performance. Hyperspectral imagery produced mangrove species classification with overall accuracy (OA) higher than 91% across the four machine learning models. LightGBM achieved the highest OA of 97.15% and kappa coefficient (Kappa) of 0.97 based on hyperspectral imagery. Dimensionality reduction and feature extraction techniques were effectively applied to the UAV data, with vegetation indices proving to be particularly valuable for species classification. The present research underscored the effectiveness of UAV hyperspectral images using machine learning models for fine-scale mangrove species classification. This approach has the potential to significantly improve ecological management and conservation strategies, providing a robust framework for monitoring and safeguarding these essential coastal habitats.

Mapping Mangroves from High-Resolution Multispectral Imagery: Using Beilun Estuary, Guangxi, China As A Case Study

Abstract:This paper presents an unsuccessful attempt to identify different mangrove species from the DigitalGlobe's QuickBird high-resolution multispectral image data for a coastal estuary located in the north of South China Sea. A conventional supervised classification was conducted with 102 signatures trained for five cover classes, with 32 of the signatures being used to separate up to live mangrove species. The results indicated that spectral characteristics alone as provided by the QuickBird's four spectral bands were not sufficient for the discrimination among mangrove species, other information such as textual and structural characteristics of mangrove species would be needed to enhance the discrimination power. In addition, the confusion between upland forests and mangroves render a removal of uplands from the classification process. Finally, the shadow effect within the mangrove patches suggested the use of NDVI in the future classification attempts.
Detecting Urban Vegetation Categories Based on Object-Oriented Method from IKONOS Data

Abstract:Based on urban vegetation characteristics of spectrum,texture,geometry and location,the object-oriented method was used to identify urban vegetation categories from IKONOS imagery.Firstly,vegetated area and non-vegetated area were separated by the threshold of NDVI and digital number(DN)value of blue band,and further,region growing method was adopted to segment the vegetated area into objects,which represent the aggregation of pixels adjacent in location and in DN value.Secondly,9 features of form index,bright,maximum spectral difference of green band,mean spectral value of red band,ratio of near-infrared band,the standard deviation of near-infrared band,x,y and Homogeneity,were selected to construct feature space.Thirdly,objects were classified into five vegetation categories using maximum likelihood methods and expert knowledge,within the feature space.The overall accuracy of 87.37% and the Kappa coefficient of 0.8267 of the classification results showed the object-oriented method is useful to classify urban vegetation.
Mangrove Canopy Species Discrimination Based on Spectral Features of Geoeye-1 Imagery

Abstract:Based on Geoeye-1 high spatial resolution images and field canopy hyperspectral reflectance of five mangrove communities located at Beibu Gulf, this paper verified the capability of Geoeye-1 imagery for mangrove canopy species identification by utilizing spectral information. The research investigated that: (1) in the spectrum range between 350 and 1 100 nm, the mangrove canopy reflectance exhibited optimum separability in six wavebands (435, 469, 523, 677, 751 and 761 nm); (2) three mangrove species could be effectively identified through the pixel-based spectrum operation, while the Bruguiera acquired the highest producer accuracy up to 93.03%; (3) species end member of Bruguiera extracted directly from the combined imagery conducted on hyperspectral hypothesis performed higher precision than the field training samples behaved. The spectrum significance of the high spatial resolution image was approved, and reference and basis were also illustrated for the further mangrove species distinguishing from the object-oriented perspective.

Abstract:Mangrove species classification is of particular importance for coastal conservation and restoration. However, it is challenging to distinguish species-level differences with limited training data. In this letter, we propose an object-oriented classification method for mangrove forests by using the hyperspectral image (HSI) and the 3-D Siamese residual network. First, superpixel segmentation is utilized to obtain objects with various shapes and scales. Second, 3-D patches of each object are extracted from the original HSI, and those patches containing training samples are adopted to pairwise train the network. The 3-D spatial pyramid pooling (3-D-SPP) is added in the network to extract features in multiple scales. Finally, the abstract features of test samples are learned by the trained network, and the labels are determined by the nearest neighbor classifier within the metric space. Experiments on real mangrove hyperspectral data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in species classification of mangroves.

Performance Evaluation of Mangrove Species Classification Based on Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data Using Extremely Randomized Trees in Fucheng Town, Leizhou City, Guangdong Province

Abstract:Mangroves are an important source of blue carbon that grow in coastal areas. The study of mangrove species distribution is the basis of carbon storage research. In this study, we explored the potential of combining optical (Gaofen-1, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-9) and fully polarized synthetic aperture radar data from different periods (Gaofen-3) to distinguish mangrove species in the Fucheng town of Leizhou, Guangdong Province. The Gaofen-1 data were fused with Sentinel-2 and Landsat-9 satellite data, respectively. The new data after fusion had both high spatial and spectral resolution. The backscattering coefficient and polarization decomposition parameters of the fully polarized SAR data which could characterize the canopy structure of mangroves were extracted. Ten different feature combinations were designed by combining the two types of data. The extremely randomized trees algorithm (ERT) was used to classify the species, and the optimal feature subset was selected by the feature selection algorithm on the basis of the ERT, and the importance of the features was sorted. Studies show the following: (1) When controlling a single variable, the higher the spatial resolution of the multi-spectral data, the higher the interspecific classification accuracy. (2) The coupled Sentinel-2 and Landsat-9 data with a 2 m resolution will have higher classification accuracy than a single data source. (3) The selected feature subset contains all types of features in the optical data and the polarization decomposition features of the SAR data from different periods: multi-spectral band > texture feature > polarization decomposition parameter > vegetation index. Among the optimized feature combinations, the classification accuracy of mangrove species was the highest, the overall classification accuracy was 90.13%, and Kappa was 0.84, indicating that multi-source and SAR data from different periods coupling could improve the discrimination of mangrove species. (4) The ERT classification algorithm is suitable for the study of mangrove species classification, and the classification accuracy of extremely random trees in this paper is higher than that of random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and Bayesian (Bayes). The results can provide technical guidance and data support for mangrove species monitoring based on multi-source satellite data.

Improved Spectral Angle Mapper applications for mangrove classification using SPOT5 imagery

Abstract:Abstract. The traditional Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) is an image classification method that uses image endmember spectra. Image spatial structure information may be neglected, especially in mangrove classification research where there is greater spectral similarity between species. This study combined object-oriented classification to improve the accuracy of the method in mangrove ecosystems. A mangrove area in Guangxi's coastal zone was chosen as the study site, and spectral feature analysis and ground investigations were carried out, combining pixel purification, training sample set optimization, and watershed image segmentation algorithm to improve the SAM. The improved SAM was used to classify SPOT5 remote sensing image data for a mangrove ecosystem and then classification accuracy was assessed. The results showed that the improved SAM had better classification accuracy for SPOT5 imagery. Accuracy for each mangrove species was greater than 80 % and overall accuracy was greater than 90 %, which showed that SAM was applicable for mangrove remote sensing. This application potential for classification and information extraction lays the foundation for commercialized remote sensing monitoring of mangrove ecosystems.
Measuring Mangrove Biomass Via Remote Sensing Subpixel Analysis

Abstract:The method of "subpixel analysis" is explored to decompose mixed pixels of mangrove for biomass quantification. The basic idea is to treat the non-mangrove spectra of a mixed pixel as the background noise and iteratively remove them from further processing, so that the residual radiance can be matched to the characteristics of, and labeled as, the sampled mangrove spectra. This method requires spectral training only on the targeted cover type (i.e. mangrove in this study), thus it may drastically reduce the amount of human interference and minimize subjective bias in the analytic process. In addition, it can deal with complex and diverse spectra of the same target for better results. A DigitalGlobe's Quickbird multispectral image of Beilun Estuary was used as a test dataset to demonstrate this approach, with mangrove cover of the region being quantified into eight standardized biomass levels. The verification of the model results was performed using Quickbird panchromatic data from the same acquisition. An overall accuracy of 86.1% (Kappa=0.844) was reached, demonstrating the application potential of the subpixel analysis method in the forest ecosystem research and management.

Abstract:Mangrove forests, mostly found in the intertidal zone, are among the highest-productivity ecosystems and have great ecological and economic value. The accurate mapping of mangrove forests is essential for the scientific management and restoration of mangrove ecosystems. However, it is still challenging to perform the rapid and accurate information mapping of mangrove forests due to the complexity of mangrove forests themselves and their environments. Utilizing multi-source remote sensing data is an effective approach to address this challenge. Feature extraction and selection, as well as the selection of classification models, are crucial for accurate mangrove mapping using multi-source remote sensing data. This study constructs multi-source feature sets based on optical (Sentinel-2) and SAR (synthetic aperture radar) (C-band: Sentinel-1; L-band: ALOS-2) remote sensing data, aiming to compare the impact of three feature selection methods (RFS, random forest; ERT, extremely randomized tree; MIC, maximal information coefficient) and four machine learning algorithms (DT, decision tree; RF, random forest; XGBoost, extreme gradient boosting; LightGBM, light gradient-boosting machine) on classification accuracy, identify sensitive feature variables that contribute to mangrove mapping, and formulate a classification framework for accurately recognizing mangrove forests. The experimental results demonstrated that using the feature combination selected via the ERT method could obtain higher accuracy with fewer features compared to other methods. Among the feature combinations, the visible bands, shortwave infrared bands, and the vegetation indices constructed from these bands contributed the greatest to the classification accuracy. The classification performance of optical data was significantly better than SAR data in terms of data sources. The combination of optical and SAR data could improve the accuracy of mangrove mapping to a certain extent (0.33% to 4.67%), which is essential for the research of mangrove mapping in a larger area. The XGBoost classification model performed optimally in mangrove mapping, with the highest overall accuracy of 95.00% among all the classification models. The results of the study show that combining optical and SAR remote sensing data with the ERT feature selection method and XGBoost classification model has great potential for accurate mangrove mapping at a regional scale, which is important for mangrove restoration and protection and provides a reliable database for mangrove scientific management.

Abstract:High resolution image can be used to distinguish the small difference of the ground things. Texture information can avoid the matter of same spectral from different objective and different spectral with same objective which must be faced when making classification with only spectral information. The main objective of this research was to determine the capacity of high spatial resolution satellite image data to discriminate vegetation in urban area. A high spatial resolution IKONOS image, coincident field data covering the urban area of linping scenic region in Yuhang town, Zhejiang province in china, was used in this analysis. The vegetation of test region was classified as tea garden, masson pine, fir, broadleaves, and shrub/herb based on the field data. Semi-variograms were calculated to differentiate vegetation classes and assess which window sizes were most appropriate for calculation of grey-level co-occurrence texture measures. The texture analysis showed that co-occurrence mean, variance, contrast, and correlation texture measures provided the most significant statistical differentiation between vegetation classes. Subsequently, a decision tree classification was applied to spectral and textural transformations of the IKONOS image data to classify the vegetation. Using both spectral and textural image bands yielded the good classification accuracy (overall accuracy=81.72%). The results showed that it has the higher accuracy to extract the urban green space from IKONOS imagery with the spectral and texture information, as well as the vegetation index.
The Methods Research of Deriving Bamboo Information Based on IKONOS Image

Abstract:Bamboo is an important forest resource at sub-tropical regions in China, which continuous expansion has taken place in China during the last 20 years. Monitoring its distribution has important significance. It provide a possibility that we can extract accurate information among vegetation types as result of detailed texture features, patterns, optical information can be obtained from IKONOS image. In this paper, Anji Country in Zhejiang province was selected, deriving bamboo information from IKONOS image by using Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique(ISODATA) classify method, Decision Tree method based on NDVI and texture and Object-oriented classification algorithm based on texture and spectral bands were discussed. The results showed that Decision Tree method based on NDVI and texture demonstrated high accuracy (Kappa=0.7428). Additional, Object-oriented classification algorithm based on texture and spectral bands suggested the highest user's accuracy 93% and producer's 78% at deriving bamboo information, which can be adapted to deriving bamboo information from IKONOS image at subtropical regions in China.
