Abstract:This is a comprehensive paper on the subject of ontology.It introduces the concept,the theory research of ontology,including modeling primitive,classification,demonstration languages,construction rules,and the authoritative agencies that engage in the ontology research recently.The ontology-related concepts are also presented in this paper.It separately probes into the relationships between ontology and semantic network,ontology and semantic web,and ontology and thesaurus as well.Finally what unfolds is the application of ontology on the information research and other fields.
A Comparative Study on Three Ontology Mapping Methods in the Integration of Product Knowledge

Abstract:With the growing access to heterogeneous and independent product data repositories, the treatment of differences in the structure and semantics of the data plays a major role in product knowledge systems. Recent research has used ontology as the knowledge base that describes concepts. For the great variation both in the level of detail and logic of different ontology representations, an integration process is needed. Comparing conception is a basic operation in the process. This paper has introduced three individual mapping methods on conception compare - Affix, Edit Distance and Synonym (WordNet). To evaluate their actual effects, a product ontology mapping task has applied these methods. Comparative study on the experiment results shows that each method has some disadvantages and can not complete the mapping task independently. To achieve better effect, it is necessary to improve the performance of the individual methods and combine their mapping results.

Abstract:The existing definitions of ontology cannot meet the needs of the present researches and applications and even cumber people to understand ontology correctly.This paper firstly analyzes the distinctions and the relations between traditional ontology and ontology engineering beginning with the origin of ontology;then,proposes a new definition of ontology on the basis of the definitions of ontology presented in literatures for convenience in creating,reusing,and sharing it,and discusses the limitations of the formal definitions of ontology;thirdly,observes ontology in its life cycle from dynamic perspective;Fourth,analyzes the relations between ontology and knowledge base;Finally,sets forth a new classification method of ontology based on the preceding work.

Abstract:Ontology evaluation tools can detect the problems and errors in the phase of programming,constructing,applying and maintaining the ontology.The paper analyzes the system architecture of ODEval,OntoQA,Core and OntoManager,and then compares these ontology evaluation tools from the five aspects of the evaluation methods they use,the evaluation mechanisms,the users,the functional scope,the operability and the validity.All these can define the respective focus and the difference so as to help the ontology developers and end users to choose the suitable ontology evaluation tools which is widely used at the international level and promising.

It simplifies ontologies building and applications by providing a mechanism for querying ontologies and an easy-to-use programming interface to ontologies and instances. OMSs are powerful tools to create ontologies and extend their applications and scope. This paper explains the basic design principles of an OMS and designs a general framework of OMSs. It devotes to promoting systematically research and development of OMSs.

Abstract:Ontology is an important tool for knowledge sharing,and it is also the pillars of the Semantic Web. With the development of the Semantic Web,a large number of ontologies are emerging on the Internet. At the same time,more and more applications need ontology to realize know ledge sharing and reusing to improve the abilities of system communication,interoperability and automatic processing. Since the construction of ontology is a time-consuming labor process,it is an efficient solution to search and reuse suitable ontology from the Web. For this purpose,some researchers developed ontology search engines and prototype systems w hich provide searching and ranking service of ontologies. This paper gives an overview of ontology search tools and related research achievements in the recent years. It involves ontology collection,processing,user interface,searching and ranking mechanism. The design theories and implementation technologies used in each tool are analyzed in detail. The limitations of current methods are also pointed out from the aspects of user interface query and ranking mechanisms. At last,the paper proposes the challenges and future research directions of ontology searching and ranking.

Abstract:With the increasing application fields of domain ontology models, how to develop the ontology model for a specific domain has become an urgent problem to solve. This paper presents and summaries three comparatively mature ontology engineering methodologies proposed respectively by Uschold & King, Grüninger & Fox and Methontology against the standard of IEEE1074-1995. Then the paper analyses the shortcomings of the three methodologies in the processes of meta-data model development and makes the proposition that the converse development method for domain ontology model is a beneficial supplement for traditional positive development method.

Abstract:Ontology is made up of meta ontology, upper ontology, domain ontology, task ontology and application ontology. Among them, the upper ontology is used to express the basic concept of common knowledge. The designers of domain ontology usually construct the domain concepts based on the defined concepts and relations among concepts of upper ontology in order to reuse and integrate ontologies. This paper gives an analysis of the construction system of SUMO, OpenCyc and DOLCE and makes a comparison of the 3 relatively mature upper ontologies in order to help designers choose well-developed and widely used ontology.
