Abstract:In order to improve the interoperation of spatial information,a new solution to implementation of discovery and retrieval for spatial information web services based on the ontology technology was proposed.After the knowledge expression of web services capacity using web ontology language for services(OWL-S)was introduced,an architecture for spatial information interaction was constructed,and a semantic matchmaker based on ontology was added into the traditional service registry center in the architecture.An actualized process of service request under the frame of spatial information web services was given on the frame of the standard open GIS consortium(OGC) web services.The results show that the ontology technology can extend the semantic of web services,re-use the same or similar web services,and improve the efficiency of reasoning.
A Comparative Study on Three Ontology Mapping Methods in the Integration of Product Knowledge

Abstract:With the growing access to heterogeneous and independent product data repositories, the treatment of differences in the structure and semantics of the data plays a major role in product knowledge systems. Recent research has used ontology as the knowledge base that describes concepts. For the great variation both in the level of detail and logic of different ontology representations, an integration process is needed. Comparing conception is a basic operation in the process. This paper has introduced three individual mapping methods on conception compare - Affix, Edit Distance and Synonym (WordNet). To evaluate their actual effects, a product ontology mapping task has applied these methods. Comparative study on the experiment results shows that each method has some disadvantages and can not complete the mapping task independently. To achieve better effect, it is necessary to improve the performance of the individual methods and combine their mapping results.

Abstract:Image interpretation is a major topic in the remote sensing community. With the increasing acquisition of high spatial resolution (HSR) remotely sensed images, incorporating geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) is becoming an important sub-discipline for improving remote sensing applications. The idea of integrating the human ability to understand images inspires research related to introducing expert knowledge into image object-based interpretation. The relevant work involved three parts: (1) identification and formalization of domain knowledge; (2) image segmentation and feature extraction; and (3) matching image objects with geographic concepts. This paper presents a novel way that combines multi-scaled segmented image objects with geographic concepts to express context in an ontology-guided image interpretation. Spectral features and geometric features of a single object are extracted after segmentation and topological relationships are also used in the interpretation. Web ontology language-query language (OWL-QL) formalize domain knowledge. Then the interpretation matching procedure is implemented by the OWL-QL query-answering. Compared with a supervised classification, which does not consider context, the proposed method validates two HSR images of coastal areas in China. Both the number of interpreted classes increased (19 classes over 10 classes in Case 1 and 12 classes over seven in Case 2), and the overall accuracy improved (0.77 over 0.55 in Case 1 and 0.86 over 0.65 in Case 2). The additional context of the image objects improved accuracy during image classification. The proposed approach shows the pivotal role of ontology for knowledge-guided interpretation.

Abstract:One of the important problems in the development of techniques for the semantic Web is the mapping of ontologies. Indeed,the Web is constituted by a variety of information sources,each expressed over a certain ontology-In order to share the information among such sources, their semantic mapping is required- In this paper, first we discuss the three integration architectures. Then we refer to the taxonomy which is presented by E- Ramh.and apply to summarize various major ontology mapping approaches. At last. we compare four typical mapping approaches following the criteria,and conclude that the combination of the individual matchers is a promising direction.

Abstract:Ontology design for complex applications is quite a challenge. The quality of an ontology is highly dependent upon the capabilities of designers, and the collaborative design process is hampered by the difficulty of balancing the viewpoints of different designers. In this paper, we present a granular view of ontology: ontologies are granular, ontologies are granular approximations of conceptualizations and conceptual-relation granules of an ontology are ordered tuples. We then propose a corresponding granular ontology design approach. In our granular ontology design approach, the unified granular cognition level and hierarchies of sub-concepts are initialized before ontological terms are designed in detail, which reduces the subjective effects of the capabilities of designers. Our approach also introduces the idea of optimization to choose an optimal subset, which can best approximate the real concept domain, from the knowledge rule set presented by different domain experts. The optimal subset is chosen on the basis of the principle of granular ontology knowledge structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ontology is the branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature of being. Ontology is currently used by philosophers, information scientists and psychologists. A sharing ontology is required for communicating between the communicating participants. And the formal description of ontology is fundamental to data exchange standards. In recent years, ontology has been used by geographers. Many researchers have recognized the importance of geographic categories, and the relationships and interactions between geographic categories. Geographic objects are intrinsically tied to space and exist at some time. In the geographic realm, cognitive categories expose certain special features of geographic objects at surveyable scale. And that these features denote the specific ontological characteristics of geographical objects. At the same time, there has been an increasing awareness of the importance of time, and time has been an integral part of geographical information science. Thus, the research of geographic ontology must involve a fully spatio- temporal view of our world, in other words, it is about spatial temporal geographic ontology. In this paper, firstly, it reviews the recently research of geographic ontology of many experts. And it mainly explores that what is the geographic ontology and what are the research contents of geographic ontology, and how to construct an geographic ontology? The domain of geographic ontology contains objects, relations, boundaries, events, processes, qualities, and quantities of all sorts. Geographic objects are typically complex, and they will in every case have parts. An adequate ontology of geographic objects must therefore contain a theory of part and whole, or mereology. And that an adequate ontology of geographic objects must contain also a topology, a theory of boundaries and interiors, of connectedness and separation, that is integrated with a mereological theory of parts and wholes. Secondly, the paper investigates the three levels- of reality: the spatial reality, the cognitive reality and geographic reality. Then it considers that geographic cognition is the key factor of geographic category. Geographic categories are related to natural, cultural, and fiat element, et al. Thirdly, in this section, the research is about an spatial temporal geographic ontology that contains space and time. The paper discusses the spatial classification and the temporal categories of geographic phenomena. Spatial objects based on object or field, which are continuants or discrete, must be represented suitably by geographic ontology. Temporal analogue of objects: there are events and processes of various kinds. Processes and events are the key elements that describe dynamic action of spatial temporal geographic objects. With the introduction of time, the requirement to take heed of the manifold interconnections between the spatial and the temporal must be proposed. The geographic phenomena can be represented as spatial or temporal, and as continuants or discrete, and as events or processes. These categories are not exist in isolation from one another. Spatial and temporal are restricted each other and represent the dynamic geographical phenomena all together. Lastly, the paper concludes that spatial temporal geographic ontology must take heed of the manifold interconnections between the spatial and the temporal and in the future a technical infrastructure be needed to provide a basis for GIS.

Abstract:Data modeling is a baffling problem in 3DGIS, no satisfied solution has been provided until today, reason come from various sides. In this paper, a new solution named "Ontology method" is proposed. GIS traditional modeling method mainly focus on geometrical modeling, i.e., try to abstract geometry primitives for objects representation, this kind modeling method show it's awkward in 3DGIS modeling process. Ontology method begins modeling from establishing a set of ontology with different levels. The essential difference of this method is to swap the position of 'spatial data' and 'attribute data' in 2DGIS modeling process for 3DGIS modeling. Ontology method has great advantages in many sides, a system based on ontology is easy to realize interoperation for communication and data mining for knowledge deduction, in addition has many other advantages.

Abstract:Geo-ontology is a newly risen research field in geospatial science. It was regarded as one of the most important research area in geospatial information science and digital earth. As the formal representation of geography cognition model or geography conceptual model, geo-ontology can support the description of geography concepts and semantic relationship of concept system well. Getting started with the abstraction of real geography world and geography cognition process, the concept and logical structure of geo-ontology was researched as well as formal expression, the geo-ontology model was built based on the theory of description logic. Finally, applications research in the field of land use was explored though the use of geo-ontology.

Abstract:A natural language interface can make a geographic information system (GIS) easy to use. It allows one to use the natural language quickly and conveniently to operate in such as digital city management system or traffic guidance system. This paper discusses the method of nature language understanding in GIS based on ontology. Natural language understanding is general apply in computer or artificial intelligence research area, yet in GIS the natural language understanding is mainly concerned about spatial information. In order to implement the natural language understanding for spatial information perfectly we use the ontology model. First we put forward a generally process of natural language understanding in GIS, defined the conception of the ontology, next set up the ontology structure, ontology-based understanding model, also indicate the mechanism of natural language understanding based on ontology. Finally are a case study and a prototype, a discussion about the research deficiency and the development forecast of my research.

Abstract:Semantic similarity plays a critical role in geospatial cognition, semantic interoperability, information integration and information retrieval and reasoning in geographic information science. Although some computational models for semantic similarity measurement have been proposed in literature, these models overlook spatial distribution characteristics or geometric features and pay little attention to the types and ranges of properties. This paper presents a novel semantic similarity measurement approach that employs a richer structured semantic description containing properties as well as relations. This approach captures the geo-semantic similarity more accurately and effectively by evaluating the contributions for ontological properties, measuring the effect of the relative position in the ontology hierarchy structure and computing the geometric feature similarity for geospatial entities. A water body ontology is used to illustrate the approach in a case study. A human-subject experiment was carried out and the experiment results shows that this proposed approach has a good performance based on the high correlation between its computed similarity results and human's judgements of similarity.

Abstract:Lack of semantic interoperability in geographical information systems has been identified as the main obstacle for data sharing and database integration. The new method should be found to overcome the problems of semantic heterogeneity. Ontologies are considered to be one approach to support geographic information sharing. This paper presents an ontology-driven integration approach to help in detecting and possibly resolving semantic conflicts. Its originality is that each data source participating in the integration process contains an ontology that defines the meaning of its own data. This approach ensures the automation of the integration through regulation of semantic integration algorithm. Finally, land classification in field GIS is described as the example.

Abstract:The variety and complexity of spatial data models and geographic information systems (GIS) together with the popularity of WWW have led to an increasing number of heterogeneous and autonomous geo-referenced information sources that spread over the Internet. This paper proposes a framework for integrating distributed spatial information based on GML schema matching by using ontology. GML is adopted as the common format for spatial information wrapping and mediation, and ontology is used to overcome the heterogeneity when matching different GML schemas. A prototype is also implemented based on the proposed framework.

Abstract:Geographic objects usually change their locations, shape and characteristics over time. Change in one object can trigger a series of changes in the adjacent objects and their topological relationships. The spatio-temporal topological relations analysis of geographic objects is an important issue in the development of a more temporally aware geographical information science. Research on, and applications of spatial topology are mature, yet the methods to exploit spatio-temporal topology are still far from the reach of GIS users. Such research has probed the definition of time, and explored the formalization of spatio-temporal topology from different perspectives. However, almost all methods and representations are mathematical or logical methods represented in qualitative ways. Conformal geometric algebra (CGA) is a new tool for unified multidimensional representation and geometric computation, from a unified perspective of multidimensional space-time. In this research, we pursue a logic based on the concept of a unified representational model based on CGA for spatio-temporal objects and their spatio-temporal topological relations formally expressed by a multi-branch decision tree, which is not only qualitative but also quantitative. The research provides theoretical and methodological support for expressing and computing the spatio-temporal topological relations among any set of geographic objects. This ability effectively promotes the expression of spatio-temporal topological relationships and enhances the analytical capabilities of GIS for dealing with both space and time.

Abstract:Ontology building and mapping technology is mainly for the elimination of the semantic heterogeneity of heterogeneous data sources and is the foundation to realize the heterogeneous data semantic analytical.Based on the existing research results of bus framework for enterprise information integration and aiming at the existing problems of ontology building process,this paper puts forward global ontology building technology based on the sharing glossary and local ontology building technology based on UML,which makes the relationship of constructing ontology element become more accurate,complete and with good consistency.Also it simplifies the process of building ontology workload.And the ontology mapping strategies based on comprehensive similarity is proposed,the integrated similarity is calculated from four aspects:concept name,structure,property,instance,which greatly improves the ontology mapping precision.

Abstract:Geographic ontology model is the conceptual model of geographic knowledge graph and the logical basis for constructing the pattern layer of geographic knowledge graph. In the classification of geographic ontology research, geographic ontology model is in the category of domain ontology. It is a set of abstract structures to express ontology according to the spatial location, attribute characteristics and relational characteristics of geographic data. This paper discussed the logical components and architecture of geographic ontology, designed the geographic ontology model reference to GML, described the model using OWL language, and constructed the geographic ontology model based on GML. The geographic ontology model comprises three sub-models: element model, geometric model and spatial relation model. Finally, based on Protg ontology construction tool, this paper designed the semantic description of geographic entity and realized the construction of geographic ontology system.

Abstract:GML is an XML encoding for the modeling, transport and storage of geographic information, which has been making a significant influential on the ability of organizations to share geographic information among their Web based GIS applications. Ontology has been acknowledged to be the kernel methodology for capturing and sharing semantics of spatial information. This paper proposes a framework for integrating spatial information based on GML schema matching by using ontology technologies, in which GML is adopted as the common format for spatial information wrapping and mediation, and ontology is used to overcome the heterogeneity when matching different GML schemas. A prototype is also implemented based on the proposed framework.

Abstract:This paper proposed a solution for intelligent geographic search engine.By analyzing the disadvantages of general search engine on dealing with geographic semantic,the technology of ontology and natural language were used to solve the problem of geographic retrieval.The framework of intelligent geographic search engine was established,Ontolo-gy library and pattern library for analysing natural language were built,and geographic retrieval solution based on natural language was given.At last,one intelligent geographic search engine prototype system was designed and implemented.

Abstract:It is necessary to integrate the theories and methods of commonsense geographical cognition with the data model and data organization of GIS in order to fully dig the potentials of analysis and decision-supporting of GIS in different fields. It helps to make the description and organization of geographical entity more acceptable, understandable and suitable for people's commonsense thinking methods and habits. In this paper, the commonsense cognition activities related to data model and organization of GIS is divided into three specific parts, categorization hierarchies, entity hierarchies and the detailed descriptions of geographical entities by way of analysis of geographical cognition process. On the basis of further analysis for relevant cognition activities, we create GIS Data Meta-model to guide the conceptual modeling and computational implementation. The GIS Data Meta-model not only overcomes the attribute-based defining semantics disadvantage of traditional GIS, but also realizes the semantic representation of geographical data of different levels and the representation of semantic relationships among different data through the mapping between Categorization tree and descriptions of geographical entities. It is feasible to extract the information effectively for the application of different scale' analysis and decision-support based on the inclusion relationship of entities between upper and lower levels and the combination relationship of same level entities.

Abstract:To solve the disadvantages of high difficulty and complexity in studying the spatial topological relation method on different resolution remote sensing images, this paper proposes a spatial topological relationship model based on GeoSOT, which is one of the global subdivision grids. To express spatial objects on different resolution remote sensing images, this paper introduces the spatial objects subdivision location identification. Then, the model calculates spatial topological relation by comparing location identifications in combined table. At last, test shows that it is feasible to analyze the spatial objects topological relations based on GeoSOT and it has high efficiency operation significantly, especially for complicated spatial objects.
