The Effect of Remittances of Rural Migrants on Family Expenditure of Their Households in Western China Mountainous Areas

Abstract:Based on the relating theoretical assumption of New Economics of Labor Migration,this paper modifies the family expenditure of poor households,and analyses the direct and indirect impacts of the remittances received from the migration family members on rural household expenditure by use of the on-site investigation data in Qinling mountainous areas of Shaanxi province.The results manifest that in the expenditure system of the rural households,food consumption and production investment are simultaneously affected by the remittances,the health care and education expenditure are subjected to direct impacts,and the direct impacts exerted by the remittances on food consumption and productive investment are greater than indirect impacts with their affecting direction opposite.As cash incomes,more remittances are used for food consumption instead of productive investment.However,along with the increase in household income,the expenditure share of food consumption is decreasing,while the productive investment is increasing.The findings of this paper may offer some enlightenment in formulating and analyzing relevant policies.
