The Impacts of Labor Migration on Farm Households' Agricultural Production: Literature Review andFuture Issues

Abstract:The massive out flow of labor has exerted complicated impacts on farm households' agricultural production.Recent literatures on this topic were reviewed in this paper from four aspects of the impacts on agricultural income,agricultural investment,agricultural productivity and agricultural structure.Most recent studies find that farmers' agricultural income drop sharply because of the loss of rural labor force while migrant's remittances compensate for this drop indirectly by stimulating agricultural production.And the negative effect of the loss of rural labor force is dominant,which leads to a decrease of agricultural productivity and technical efficiency.Moreover,the agricultural technique adoption degree of households whose family members flow out is different from non-migrant households'.Farmers cut down the investment on agriculture as family members flow out to the city,which may influence agricultural production negatively in the long term.Furthermore,all previous studies consistently suggest that migrant households have adjusted their agricultural structure,whereas the direction of the adjustment depends on research samples.
