Abstract:Theory on Three Schools is the important result of Mu Zongsan's Confucian thought.The thesis introduces the basic standpoint of the research in this aspect,and points out that Theory on Three Schools has an important theoretic meaning.However,there also exist serious theoretical problems.

Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.
Querying Mou Zongsan’s Doctrine of Xing Zhu

Abstract:The doctrine of Xin Zhu (形著说),though one of the constituent parts of Mou Zongsan’ Confucianist thoughts, has been seldom studied in a systematic way so far. The present paper is, therefore, meant to query this well-known point of view so as to usher in a new phase in Mou Zongsan studies. And the conclusion is that this doctrine is meanwhile of important theoretical significances, yet it fails to adopt a valid approach at the very beginning. As a result, not only it cannot crack the hard nuts in theory, but also involves itself in redundancy and repetition.

Abstract:In order to construct his ethic existentialism, Mu Zongsan gave an incorrect interpretation of some Confucian classics of the pre-Qin period and concluded that there had existed such a concept then. From a historical perspective, the pre-Qin Confucians did not form such a concept and Mu Zongsan's theory has evident defects.

Abstract:The research on “schools of future” not only contains the reflection on and the criticism of many problems in today’s schools, but also shows a proactive planning for a better educational ideal and school pattern for the future. In this area, a consensus has been formed concerning the space reconstruction, technological empowerment, and personalized orientation of the development of future schools. However, there are still many controversies over such issues as how to face the uncertainty of the future, whether to move toward “de-discipline” or to reconstruct the disciplines based on the disciplinary logic, and whether to promote the retreat of “teaching” or to further strengthen the power of “teaching” in the sense of transformation. In order to guide the construction of future schools in a more rational way, the research on “schools of future” should avoid falling into such traps as “technological determinism”, “undifferentiated reform”, and social atomization.

Abstract:One of the features of Mou Zongsan’s Confucianism is to divide Confucianism in Song and Ming Dynastiy into two systems, i.e., vertical and horizontal ones according to the theory of being. But such a division has a great theoretical defect, because the two systems have only a difference in the theory of being, but have no difference on the stream of transcendence. The author discusses, with Zhu Xi’s Confucianism as the center, Mou’s defects in his theory on transcendental being.

Abstract:Transcendent being theory is a significant part of Mou Zongsan's Confucianism thought. In this paper, the author intends to give a comprehensive review of the theory. The basic point is that though Mou's theory has high values, yet taking the Heaven as the subject of creative being has resulted in the theoretical chaos of Mou's transcendent being theory.

Abstract:This paper holds a different idea from the one expressed in Questioning the Major Evidence of "Five Types of Social,Formations" by Professor Duan Zhongqiao.The author points out that Duan's paper regarded Grundrisse as the basis of "The Preface".This showed that Duan actually failed to make a distinction between Grundrisse and the officially published A Contribution to the Critique Political Economy(Book I).Moreover,Duan's interpretation of some arguments in Grundrisse is also questionable.Therefore,Duan's refutation of "five types of social formations" is not well justified.

Abstract:After the middle of Western Han dynasty,the debate between the ancient school and the con- temporary school of Confucian classics is the one among the Confucianists.Most of the ancient school scholars and the contemporary school scholars are intellectuals of middle-class land-owners,and the others are aristocrats.There is nothing more different in their social-political viewpoints,and both of them are a- gainst the governmental control of salt and iron trade.As for the world view,they both talk about strange disasters.Their debate is in essence a struggle for official position,especially for the position of education- al office.Were there any difference between the two schools,it is that the contemporary school is indulged in so-called“sublime words with deep meaning”,i.e.,the idealistic and mystic“correspondence between man and universe”,while the ancient school lays more emphasis on hermeneutics,and less mystic,al- though it also speaks about strange disasters.

Abstract:This essay analyzes Zhu Xi's opinions on the differences between Confucianism and Buddhism on the basis of the following three aspects:the attribute of noumenon,the concern of ethic and the way of cultivating.As to the attribute of noumenon,Zhu Xi considered that Confucianism is "one" while Buddhism "two".In the aspect of ethic concern,Zhu Xi regarded that in Confucianism ethic was endowed by the nature.However,Buddhism considered ethic as a burden and aimed to get away from it.As to the way of cultivating,Zhu Xi held that Confucianism practiced according to the natural order.On the other hand,Buddhism sought peace and calmness in mind with intention.Therefore,Buddhism and Confucianism are different in both the root and the end.Zhu Xi reached the peak of North Song dynasty's scholars' discussions on the differences between Confucianism and Buddhism.His opinions could also inspire modern Confucians.Nevertheless,Zhu Xi's misinterpretation of Buddhism in his analysis,of course,should also be noticed.

Abstract:One of the important features of MOU Zong-san's Confucian thoughts is that his thoughts have established the theory of beyond existence with the traditional Heaven Theory. However, the theory is not consistent with the real development of the Heaven Theory of Pre-Qin. "Heaven" in Confucian School of Pre-Qin is no more than the meta-source of moral disposition, which can merely create moral disposition in a sense of hypothesis and then subsequently moral existence, but "heaven" itself has no ability to directly create moral existence. MOU Zong-san's theory of beyond existence has its vital theoretical difficulty.

Abstract:Theories of the relations between literature and doctrine is the core of HAN Yu and LIU Zhong-yuan's ancient literature theories.In this respect,people pay more attention to HAN Yu and LIU Zhong-yuan's theories of expressing opinions by literature.However,HAN Yu and LIU Zhong-yuan's theories on the relations between literature and doctrine include three levels: literature expresses doctrine;the foundation of literature is doctrine;doctrine is attributed to literature.It is because of the existence of the latter two levels that HAN Yu and LIU Zhong-yuan's theories can maintain a relative independence and become literary theories rather than theories on thoughts.Each one of the three levels is indispensable for the understanding of HAN Yu and LIU Zhong-yuan's theories on the relations between literature and doctrine.

Abstract:As the founders of Contemporary Neo-Confucianism, Mou Zongsan and Tang Junyi developed different interpretations of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s philosophies of qi. In this essay, both the strength and weakness of their interpretations will be critically examined. As a contrast, an alternative interpretation of the School of qi in Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism will be outlined. This new interpretation will uncover that, like Leibniz, Zhang Zai and Wang Fuzhi introduced a non-substantivalist approach in natural philosophy in terms of an innovative concept of force. This interpretation not only helps to show the limitations of Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s understandings of Zhang Zai’s and Wang Fuzhi’s doctrines of qi, but also indicates a way to bridge the traditional Chinese philosophy of nature and modern physics. More generally, our critical discussions will bring to light a new angle with which to re-appreciate Mou Zongsan’s and Tang Junyi’s contributions to the development of Confucianism.

Abstract:In the late Ming dynasty,Lin Zhao-en founded his educational thoughts of "three-in-one",which means the syncretism of the three main Chinese traditions——Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism,which is also called the religion of threein-one,its another name is Xia religion.The thoughts of "Normalization from Taoism and Buddhism to Confucianism and to Confucius" Lin advocated,under the influence of the Yangming School,are the religion of syncretism of the three Chinese traditions,which shows in four aspects: the religion of three-in-one,the agreement of the three religions,not only the three religions,the syncretism of the three Chinese traditions and the normalization of Confucianism revering Confucius.

Abstract:By explanations of origination,development and their fundamental connotations of theories of Zhu-zi and Yang-ming,the modern significations of them will be illustrated.The most vital part of Zhu-zi theory is that of "to obtain knowledge by investigating nature of things",the distinctiveness of which is to do one's best to establish a position for knowledge inquiry activities of people.Minds equaling to sense and acquiring conscience constitute main philosophic propositions,in which "integrating conscience and activities into a whole" shows an important feature of this antilogy.Zhu-zi emphasized the characters of reading and studying,which offers a very good instruction for setting up modern "studying society" and "lifelong education".As for college's general education,the thoughts of Zhu-zi besides those of Confucian's impart the most important sources.Zhu-zi advocated that "own reverence" stands for working attitudes of self-restrained,solemnity and earnest,and diligence and undivided,which still offers important sources to maintain positive ethic for East Asian societies.Yang-ming theory emphasizes practice which embodies "integrating conscience and activities into a whole","tempering oneself by doing things",this kind of philosophic spirits merged with practical philosophy development since 19th century is interlinked well with modern philosophy.The idea of Wang Yang-ming's all things are one merits ecumenical value in terms of human peaceful development and ethic supporting for ecological and environment protection.

Abstract:This article attempts to summarize with a brief comment on studies of Chinese scholars on the relationship of modernism with the new Confucian school and Marxist philosophy. Post modernism as criticism of the negative aspects of modernism both conforms to and diverges from the Chinese traditional philosophy in certain aspects, the modern new Confucian school in particular. Under circumstances of post modernism, the author points out, modernization in China is a really challenging job.
