Abstract:As a pioneer for contemporary American environmental ethics, Thoreau had never been confined to Emerson’s mode of thinking which merely lingered over a sort of theoretical meditation of transcendentalism. Rather, he went into the woods and lived all by himself by the pond for over two years to face the essential facts of life and comprehend the essence of life. We may realize from his natural writings that each of us has two ponds: the physical pond in the Earth and the metaphysical pond in the book, the two interacting with each other. According to Thoreau’s viewpoint, the practical value of ecocentrism lies in the preservation of wild nature and the wise use of natural resources.
