Abstract:Throughout East Asia,women have long been in the field of literature,achieving not only high praises for their masterpieces circulating among the masses,but also acquiring prestigious statuses in the literary world.During the Ming Dynasty when Emperor Jing Tai(1450- 1457) was in power,the literary world boomed with development causing a flood of female works to be produced,published and ready for the masses.However,the trend of graceful writing did not occur simultaneously across East Asia.Female literature was scarce in Chosun compared to the vast number of female writings in Japan.It was only when female writings began to flourish in the Ming Dynasty and spread into Chosun that ambitious local people became stimulated and inspired to create more works of their own,leading to a flourish of female literature in Chosun Dynasty.In the past,the study of East Asian literature history would focus on how Chinese literature was introduced further to the East or how it flowed back.Rarely would our study point to how it would circulate.Both primary focuses,the flow to the East or the flow back,were very straight forward going only in one direction.However,when one looks into the circulation approach,one would find it to be multidirectional,diverse,intricate,and most of all endless in possibilities.The previous unidirectional methods can only skim the surface on how literature spreads,while the multidirectional circulatory method is able to penetrate deep under exposing the heart of the matter.The circulatory method shows a multidirectional dissemination of the books,the process of reading,assimilating,responding and interacting by the readers,while it also contains the consequently changed concepts and cultural perspectives of the readers.The subject matter of this dissertation is of considerable length.Due to space limitations,this prologue introduces a general description to the circulation of female literature in East Asia during the Ming-Qing dynasties.The next six parts would respectfully be interviews,purchases,inputs,gifts,prints,and compilations.Each chapter will provide examples as further illustrations.Questions such as how do people read these books,what are possible misunderstandings made by readers,and what influence would it have on people will be all answered in future dissertations.
