Abstract:The study on Jianye, or Jiankang, the ancient capitalof the Six Dynasties, had been primarily dependent on historical documents as the Six Dynasties remains were entirely overlaid by modern infrastruc?tures of Nanjing, which made large-scaled archaeological excavations unfeasible. The field research on the Six Dynasties capital city was not conducted until the turn of the 21st century, with the Taicheng city at Nan?jing’s Laohuqiao as the first large-scaled site for excavation. The past two decades have witnessed great ac?complishments in this field, which include the discoveries of the sites of the capital’s downtown area and the Stone City, the identification of the location of the Xizhou City, the unearth of a range of remains of Buddhist temples and ritual architectures, and the finding of a large amount of relics, such as tile-ends and ceramics, that contain valuable information on the culture of the Six Dynasties capital. These research findings are of great significance to the future archaeological studies.
