On the Plan for Capital City Jiankang in Six Dynasties

Abstract:By applying the notion of plan,this paper explores the formation process of Jiankang City's spatial pattern in Six Dynasties,and elucidates the inherent logic of its spatial evolution.Taking full consideration of the significant value of the land,the plan for Jiangkang during the Six Dynasties period can be summarized into the following six aspects: Yangguanfucha(Observe between heaven and earth),Xiangtuchangshui(Read the soil and examine the water),Bianfangzhengwei(Take bearings and fix the position),Jilihuafang(Apply a square grid system with one square lias a unit),Zhichenbushi(Set up the layout and configuration),and Yinshilidao(Guide actions according to circumstances).Among these aspects,Yangguanfucha and Xiangtuchangshui focused on the investigation and understanding of the land,which had taken into account of natural factors,their mutual relations as well as the natural integrity so formed;Bianfangzhengwei,Jilihuafang and Zhichenbushi stressed the following as well as utilization of land,which had included constructional(technological) and artistic pursuits to form new integrity;and Yinshilidao laid particular emphasis on the continuous evolution of the city's spatial pattern,which would change in accordance with the environment and ensuing conditions.
