They are the new edition of Explanation of Dunhung Words and Phrases, Dictionary of Dunhuang Language, Research on Dunhuang Documents, and The Collation and Annotation of Dunhuang literature. This paper attempts to make a thorough comment on them.

Abstract:DaFangBianFoBaoEnJing as a Buddhist sutra whose translator is unknown, used to be collected into the catalog of Buddhist classics of the Eastern Han Dynasty. From the perspectives of specific interrogation and question mood particles, this paper infers its time of translation is not earlier than Three Kingdoms period and exact time of translation can not be ascertained. This paper considers that we should textual research and discern the translator and time of translating before we make use the incredible forepart Buddhist sutra in order to gain the credible conclusion.
A Study on the Matching of the Fragments of Dunhuang Avatamsaka-Sutra,the Fifty-scroll Version Translated During the Jin Dynasty

Abstract:The catalogues of Buddhistic scriptures have it that there are three different translations of the Avatamsaka-Sutra: one translation is a fifty-scroll edition translated during the Jin Dynasty,which was then revised into a sixty-scroll edition; a second version is an eighty-scroll edition translated in the Tang Dynasty;while a third is a forty-scroll edition also translated in the Tang Dynasty. Texts from these three translations can be found among the Dunhuang manuscripts,but the fifty-scroll edition enjoys numerical superiority. After a general investigation of all the Dunhuang manuscripts,89 pieces have been identified as being texts from the fifty-scroll edition,among which,4 pieces are preserved intact,while the rest are all fragments. This paper,by putting together broken Chinese characters,analyzing coherence and cohesion,comparing the format of lines in writing and the calligraphic styles,puts 26 fragments together into 11 groups and finally explores the distribution and the naming of the relevant pieces.

Abstract:Since the twentieth century,the archaeological discoveries have provided a great number of new materials for the research of Jijiupian,a textbook of Chinese words.Based on these excavated materials,this paper discusses the study of Jijiupian with new research methods,including new verification of ancient documents,ancient history,and the names and descriptions of items.It also presents some points that should be noticed during the new verification of Jijiupian.
Restoration and Study on the Fragments of Four Apocryphal Scriptures Among Dunhuang Documents

Abstract:More than one hundred kinds of apocryphal scriptures kept in Dunhuang documents are of high research value, since the vast majority have not been recorded in Buddhist canons published before the Qing dynasty. Most of them are fragments, however, which severely impedes research work. Based on comparative analysis of the incomplete characters, context continuation, formats, and calligraphic styles, twenty-six fragments of four apocryphal scriptures, namely Wuliang Dacijiao Jing, Yaoxing Shesheng Jing, Zanseng Gongdejing and Fomu Jing,have been categorized into twelve groups. The more complete information provided by previously restored fragments allows for a more objective and reliable judgment on the form, contents, and nature of these texts.
The Patching-up and Study on Some Buddhist Dictionary Fragments, Represented by NO. 18974, Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Russian Collections

Abstract:More than ten pieces of Buddhist dictionary fragments are kept in the Seventeenth Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Russian Collections, from P. 305 to P. 326. The editors of the book didn’t name and give necessary explanations to these fragments. Judging by the copying style and handwriting, we conclude that these fragments may have a same source. According to their contents, we find they are fragments of Dafang’guangfohuayanjing translated by the monk Shicha’nantuo of Yutian, and its preface written by Wu Zetian the empress of the Zhou Dynasty. After patching-up, we collated these fragments, marking out the sentences where these knotty characters were picked from. Basing on some deliberate or particularly used characters, such as ″qie″,″ming″ and ″lian″ in the fragments, we conclude that they belong to the Heishuicheng Manuscripts and not the Dunhuang Manuscripts. This article hopes to set an example to the patching-up of fragments of Dunhuang Manuscripts or Heishuicheng Manuscripts, and to the judgement of their copying dates.

Abstract:Many scholars conclude that TID1015 fragment of printed rhyme dictionary in the Turfan manuscripts is printed in the Five Dynasties.This paper proposes that the fragment is a revised edition of Tang Yun(唐韵) printed in Liao(辽) Dynasty by analyzing its feature and content.Although its content show some similarities to Guang Yun(广韵),the former is not a master copy for the latter.They are two different branchs of the system of Tang Yun(唐韵) editons.

Abstract:There are many characters which are difficult to be interpreted in the line statements. This paper extends new interpretations of some characters in line statements in the hexagrams of Bi (Union,8),L (Treading,10),Li (Fire,30),and Tai (Peace,11) by drawing references from the silk manuscript of the Zhouyi and the bamboo slips manuscript of the Zhouyi of the Han dynasty excavated at Fuyang,Anhui Province.

Abstract:This paper discusses some variant characters in the remarks affiliated to Sui(Hexagram 17 in current version), Wu Wang(Hexagram 25), Xian(Hexagram 31), and Heng(Hexagram 32) in the Zhouyicopied on the bamboo slips of Chu, and raises new interpretations to the remarks attached to the top line of Sui, those to the hexagram Wu Wang, as well as the remarks to its second and fifth lines, remarks to the initial and top lines of hexagram Heng. This discussion is of fundamental significance to the studies of the Text ofZhouyi.

Abstract:he fragment of Baopuzi is a precious manuscript among scattered Dunhuang documents. This paper introduces the condition of its preservation and collection, and researches its transcription time and textual value. It might have been transcribed in the Northern Zhou dynasty, close to the time when that book was written. Therefore, it records more original information and thus has significant textual value.

Abstract:A number of manuscripts of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties were discovered in Dunhang and Turpan.Most were Buddhist scriptures while a few were Taoist scriptures,Confucian Classics and Letters.The commemoration inscriptions,attached at the Taoist and Buddhist scriptures with the era and rich historical information,boasted great academic value and reflected that most manuscripts,copied in the south,flowed into Dunhuang and Turpan through the traffic route between the Northwest and the Southeast.These information revealed that religious cultural exchanges and communications between the Northwest and the Southeast regions in the Eastern Jin,Sixteen Kingdoms,and Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Abstract:Manuscripts are the main body of the historical documents unearthed from Dunhuang,Turfan,and Khara-Khoto.Many printed fragments have survived too;for example,the fragments of historical works printed in the Song dynasty such as Han-shu(the Book of Han),Xintang-shu(the New Book of Tang),and Zizhitongjian(Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance) are significant for edition research.

Abstract:There are some mistranslations and losses in the published version of the bamboo slips manuscript of the Zhouyi unearthed from the Han tomb at Fuyang,Anhui Province. This paper gives out some amendments,further translates some characters,and discriminates some remanent characters,which are referential to the studies of this version of the Zhouyi. In addition,the paper also points out some problems in the copy of the original manuscript.

Abstract:The Dunhuang manuscript numbered Yu 56 and collected in the Kyōu Shooku in Japan features the first volume of Xuan Ying's Yiqie jing yinyi(Phonetic and Semantic Dictionary for all Buddhist Sutras),which covers volume 36 of the Avatamsaka Sutra(the Garland Sutra).This paper first transcribes the fragmentary manuscript and then compares it with various other versions.On the basis of the comparison,this paper examines the following problems:(1) the relationship between Xuan Ying's and Hui Lin's versions;(2) different compilations of different versions of the Avatamsaka Sutra,namely,the version translated by Buddhabhadra and consulted by Xuan Ying,the Dunhuang Manuscript version,and the transmitted version;and(3) the relationship between the versions in the Tripitaka Koreana,the Jisha Tripitaka and Hui Lin's version.
Translation of Complex Words and Sentences in Two Translated English Versions of A Journey to the West

Abstract:A Journey to the West,or xi you ji in Chinese,is one of the four Chinese classics.It has been translated into many foreign languages.Among these versions,there are two influential English versions: the incomplete version translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,and the complete version translated by W.J.F.Jenner.A comparative study is made in this paper on the translation of such complex words and sentences as proper names of people,poems and proverbs.Though both successful in conveying the original meaning,the two versions are substantially different.Yangs' version is striking for its fluency and exoticism while Jenner's version is faithful and accurate in conveying the Chinese culture.

Abstract:The Turfan manuscripts seldom involve literary materials and are flawed by fragmentation and incompleteness.However,their accidental preservation provides objective testimony to the dissemination of Chinese literature in Turfan oasis society during the period 327-803.The manuscripts can be classified into the three categories of handwritten books,copybooks and drafts of literary works,revealing the evolutionary process and details of the production of Chinese literature in Turfan.Literature in this region evolved in tandem with its counterpart in the Central Plains; it was closely related to cultural diffusion by immigrants from the hinterland,the protection by cultural institutions and the pursuit of literary fashions in the hinterland.These works offer a unique picture of the acceptance and dissemination of Chinese culture in the border regions.The impact of Chinese culture,transplanted here in the Wei and Jin dynasties,survived even the Uyghur cultural domination of the Turfan oasis after the mid-ninth century.In their richness and diversity,the Turfan manuscripts,with their "dual (internal and external) fragmentation" demonstrate the process and actuality of literary dissemination and acceptance in Turfan in middle antiquity.
