A Study on the Patching-up of the Fragments of Golden Light Sutra in the Russian Collections of Dunhuang Manuscripts

Abstract:Golden Light Sutra is one of the most important scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism. It has five Chinese translations in all. Among them,the Tanmo Chen version,translated during Xuanshi period( 412-427 A. D.) in the Northern Liang Dynasty,is the earliest existent translation. After a general investigation of all the published Dunhuang manuscripts,we have found 280 documents of Golden Light Sutra of the Tanmo Chen translation,and 41 of them are newly named. Most of these documents are remnant scrolls or pieces,and some of them came from a same manuscript.Through comparing texts,cracks,writing formats,and calligraphic styles,this paper puts 37 fragments together into11 groups. The patching-up of these remnant scrolls and pieces,not only gathered the separated parts,but also helps us to make a more objective and accurate judgment on the properties of manuscripts.
