Abstract:In late Ming dynasty,the spreading of Catholicism launched a dialogue and integration between Catholic missionaries and Confucian christians on charity. Under the guidance of the"merging Confucianism and Christianism together",the missionaries and Confucian Christians converged the ideas of mercy of Christianity and the ideas of benevolence of Confucianism,and carried out charity practices integrating Christian and Confucian's traditions. The Confucian Christians absorbed Catholic charity thought,and transformed Confucian charity thought and practices. They corrected and supplemented Confucian charity thought dominated by politics and ethics with God's transcendence love,and expanded charity practices"combining mind and body"by integrating both Christianism and Confucianism charitable tradition. Confucian christians' charity practices in late Ming and early Qing dynasties can provide some inspiration to contemporary China's philanthropy,and can promote forming the"public domain"and"civil society"in Chinese society today.

Abstract:A library is the one of best fields of charity aid. Since US steel tycoon, Andrew Carnegie founded the modern charity fund, this field is always focused on by philanthropists and the public. In China, social aids to libraries are the indispensable force in library construction, which demonstrate the social support to spiritual and cultural needs and grass root education of the people. Five types of social forces＇ assistance mode to library in China are induced and summarized in this paper, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of their own are also analyzed. Further, explore the main difficulties of librarians charity and public welfare. Moreover, innovation model of future developmental direction are present in the last paragraph.

Abstract:Due to the influence of traditional culture,imperfect incentive mechanisms,lagging and inadequate laws and regulations,problems such as small total donations,imbalance in the areas of donation and insufficient credibility of charity carriers exist the philanthropy of the rich in China,so that it doesn't fully play its role in achieving social justice.By using social exchange theory,this paper analyzes the intrinsic and extrinsic profits donors and their enterprises and foundations obtain from philanthropy,and then provides several suggestions for further development of philanthropy of the rich in China.

Abstract:Benevolent love of Confucianism can be classified into five levels: benevolent mind,self-love,loving kinsfolk,universally loving others and integration of benevolence and everything in the universe,expanding from the inner to the outer,from the near to the far in compliance with the principle of hierarchy of love. Benevolent love is a humanist concept and benevolence is the essential nature of human beings' conduct. Comparing with the benevolent love of Confucianism,kindness of Taoism,universal love of Mohism,charity of Buddhism,indiscriminative love of Christian and the doctrine of doing good and punishing the wicked of Islam,it can be seen that all the different cultures stress "love",but different culture has different interpretation of " love",which respectively forms its own characteristics. Benevolent love of Confucianism can develops into universal values and it will more and more clearly show its unique wisdom in the present world.

Abstract:Charity organizations are the carrier of the development of charity cause. At present, charity organizations in china are divided into many types in different ways. Cooperation and disharmony are both existed among different types of charity organizations. The reason of disharmony among charity organizations are the nonstandard of passing round the hat, lacking of communication among organizations and consciousness of "big charity". Abstract:Benevolence is the most familiar moral concept for Chinese people.As a traditional Chinese vir?tue which should be inherited and carried forward, it must be endowed the new content of the times. Confucian benevolence focuses on the kinship care and undoubtedly it played a role in the family virtue of"kindness filial piety". Benevolence in the 21st century reveals the universal concern with equality, which includes not only lov?ing yourself and others, but also loving all things. This is the inevitable conclusion by examining the situation of the world in the 21st century. Anyway, loving others and all things are what we need to make efforts to weave a blueprint for the benevolence.

Abstract:Enterprise philanthropy is able to adjust the gap between the rich and the poor.It has a special meaning of easing social contradictions.Nowadays,there are three academic perspectives in the research of enterprise philanthropy,which deserve sustained attention.First,the rational economic perspective,developed in the argument of whether firms have the corporate social responsibility.It puts forward the strategy of combining social charity with business,and thus jumps out of the traditional ″duality of enterprise philanthropy″.Second,the social contract perspective,which takes the demands of stakeholders into consideration and puts moral and collective actions into business.Third,the social isomorphism theory,which believes that the institutional pressure and the community's concerns on charity actions will lead to the consistency of local firms' actions.Since enterprise philanthropy is extremely controversial,it is believed that the utilization of the multi-level analysis frame,which helps us get an integrated understanding of the roles firms play in philanthropy,the sources of philanthropist motivation and the characters of charity actions on the macro scale,medium scale and micro scale,may stimulate enterprise charity activities and promote the construction of a harmonious society in a positive way.

Abstract:Among the study of scholars in the Eastern Zhou,even the entire Chinese thought,Confucianism is always the first to be reminded when it comes the human nature.It's time to change that impression.Apart from the Buddha-nature Treatise of the Buddhism,human nature(virtue or Tao) is an important field in Taoism.However,the form and pattern are somewhat different from Confucianism and Buddhism,which is the reason that the problem appeals to Taoism and Taoist first.And the research surrounding Zhuang Tzu's theory of human nature and Taoist theory of mind is in more detail.Here,I focus more on the evolution and variation of "virtue" and "human sympathy" of early Taoism.Specifically speaking,several concepts like "De","nature","heaven" and "human sympathy" are more likely to be discussed on how these notions are evolved from Lao Tzu to Zhuang Tzu and the study of the Emperor Huang.Analyzing in this way,of course,we presuppose Lao Tzu(including abridged edition) is in the beginning status of that evolving chain,and Zhuang Tzu and the study of the Emperor Huang are the later product.After Lao Tzu,the thought of Lao Tzu is divided radically into multiple lineages as complicated as the Confucianism,though no summary was made by scholars in the later Eastern Zhou.Motivated by interior self-unfolding of thought,competed with other schools,and stimulated by social drastic variations,several concepts of Lao Tzu turned to be abundant later,which remains the same as it is seen from the human nature and state of existence and these concepts of "De","nature" and "heaven".
Evaluating the Charitable Efforts Made by the Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations:Key Issues in the Development of Charity in China

Abstract:The charitable efforts made by those people demonstrating great compassion to the poor and marginal groups reflect the kindness of human nature and also the degree of civilization of society.Charity should be about the voluntary engagement of all people instead of a public affair promoted only by the government.Therefore,the issue on how to mobilize citizens into charitable engagement is more significant than the issue of how governmental agents promote charitable activities.With this understanding,we expose the problems in the operation of a state-directed system in China as it relates to charity.At present,this system plays a dominant role in determining the developmental process of charity in China.However,this system also suffers from widespread criticism among the public through channels like mass media due to various charity-related incidents that have occurred recently.This study explores the resolutions to these problems and concludes that strengthening civic organizations is the main way of enhancing charity in China. This study looks at the development of charitable organizations and the donation levels in China,but stresses that this development is accompanied with many incidents that have resulted in a strong sense of distrust among the public towards state-affiliated charitable organizations.This feeling of distrust was widely reported in the mass media after the ″ Guo Meimei″ incident and has had a strong influence on people's views towards the strategy of development on charity.To deal with these issues,this work examines the charity situation in contemporary China through empirical studies based on data collected from opinion surveys and through social investigation into the behavioral orientations of these charitable organizations. Accordingly,this analysis consists of three dimensions of study in regard to the value,organizational features and the institutional features of this state-led charity system.We argue that the value system that influences people's view on charity has gradually transformed into a new value system that is in support of public management in charitable efforts.Thus,it is not so much as a value issue but rather an organizational and institutional issue that has resulted in limited public participation in making donations.It is for these organizational reasons that some people complain that it is the lack of transparency in charitable efforts as being the major barrier for this development,but this study maintains that it is the shortcomings of this state-led charity system that is the major obstacle as it restricts the roles of NGOs to perform their charitable actions. Furthermore,by deploying a functional analysis about this state-led system of charitable organizations,the study illustrates several by-functions of the system on the development of charitable activities of civil organizations.This paper argues that there is a crucial need for the state to reform this system in order to modify the role of state in charitable operations.This should be the precondition for coming up with ways to further this development.Through analysis,the study raises policy proposals for strengthening the role of civil agents in the development of charity in China.In order to do so,it is very important to correct a popular viewpoint about the nature of charity;namely that it is an extension of social assistance and therefore should be undertaken by the state.Thus,with a goal of empowering civil agents in charitable efforts,we argue for a change in the governmental function in civil administration in the field of charity.The NGOs should have a space for development in the sphere of charity.
