Abstract:This paper makes a statistical analysis of research papers' citation. Through analyzing the indexes of half- life of literature and the reference factors, it is found that there are many shortcomings in the news dissemination studies, such as the short literature suitable period, the deficiency of literature' standard and utilization, the lack of concern to front issues and the problem of excess studying in practice work. These conclusions are consistent with Professor Chen Taowen's analysis, and also show that it is feasible to evaluate this discipline with bibliometrics.

Abstract:With the study on 2,217,047 references of 280,280 source articles in Chinese Social Science Citation Index in year 2006–2008, we discovered the overall aging phenomenon of humanities and social sciences by means of synchronous citation analysis, and compared the aging law of seven disciplines. The results reveal that the aging speed of seven disciplines roughly descend as follows: Management, Economics, Education, Law, Literature, Philosophy, History. This is due to the reasons that the aging speed of humanities is slower than social sciences and the dependence of History and Philosophy on archival literature is the strongest. Moreover, each discipline of humanities and social sciences follows a basic function: half life (H) × Price Index (P) = constant C, C is 2.6 or so. Furthermore, the maximum citation age of humanities and social sciences at this stage is found to be about 3 years.

Abstract:We provide a view of the literature aging features in the sciences and social sciences, at different aggregation levels, of major fields, subfields, journals and individual papers and from different perspectives. Against to the wide belief that scientific literature may become more rapidly obsolete, we found that, in general, the share of more recent references were distinctly lower in 2014 than that in 1992, which holds for all aggregation levels. As exceptions, the subfields related to Chemistry and the subfield energy and fuels, have shown a clear trend to cite more recent literature than older articles. Particle and nuclear physics and astronomy and astrophysics, the two subfields which strongly rely on e-print archives, have shown a ‘polarization’ tendency of reference distribution. Furthermore, we stress that it is very important to measure the Price Index at the paper level to account for differences between the documents published in the same journals and (sub-)fields.

The Time Dimension of Science: Connecting the Past to the Future

Abstract:A central question in science of science concerns how time affects citations. Despite the long-standing interests and its broad impact, we lack systematic answers to this simple yet fundamental question. By reviewing and classifying prior studies for the past 50 years, we find a significant lack of consensus in the literature, primarily due to the coexistence of retrospective and prospective approaches to measuring citation age distributions. These two approaches have been pursued in parallel, lacking any known connections between the two. Here we developed a new theoretical framework that not only allows us to connect the two approaches through precise mathematical relationships, it also helps us reconcile the interplay between temporal decay of citations and the growth of science, helping us uncover new functional forms characterizing citation age distributions. We find retrospective distribution follows a lognormal distribution with exponential cutoff, while prospective distribution is governed by the interplay between a lognormal distribution and the growth in the number of references. Most interestingly, the two approaches can be connected once rescaled by the growth of publications and citations. We further validate our framework using both large-scale citation datasets and analytical models capturing citation dynamics. Together this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the time dimension of science, representing a new empirical and theoretical basis for all future studies in this area.

Abstract:In recent three decades the Chinese humanities and social sciences contributed millions of works.The works vary in citation effect: Political works centered in the most cited ones,and the effects of ancient,either Western or Chinese,and modern humanities works turned to be weaker,while the modern social sciences became more and more influential,especially the works translated from Western academia.This characteristics call for Chinese scholarship's developments and improvements in the future.It proves the importance of the quantitative study of intellectual history.
An Analysis of the International Academic Influence of Academic Journals in China over the Three Decades Since Reform and Opening Up

Abstract:Academic journals,by which academic influence of a country is indicated,provide important sources for research.The number of papers collected by the three US science citation databases(SCI,SSCI,AHCI) is an important index of a discipline's international academic influence.An analysis of academic papers indexed by the three science citation databases over the last three decades in our country reveals that great gaps exist in the number of papers indexed by each database,which embodies great imbalance in the development and international academic influence of the three subjects,of which natural science developed at a high speed,social science developed rapidly,and art and humanities developed slowly.In order to enhance the international academic influence of our country,policies should be stipulated to balance the development of different subjects.The way to classify subjects should be reformed: the philosophical social science should be divided into two subjects——social science and art humanities.Correct methods should be used in evaluating different subjects and measures should be taken to assist academic journals in entering international citation databases and thereby promote the internationalization.
Openness and Knowledge Sharing of Economics,Sociology,Law and Politics:A Comparative Study on Citations of Chinese Social Science Journals

Abstract:As an important part of academic papers which comply with the norms of social science research,citations themselves are of great research value.On the basis of the collection of citation data from top Chinese journals in economics,sociology,law and politics and on the basis of internal and international comparison research,we find that economics and sociology are more open to research abroad while law and politics are less open.And in these subjects,the level of citations to other social sciences is comparatively low.We also find that the percentage of self-citation in economics decreased significantly while that in sociology,law and politics increased moderately between 1998 and 2008 according to the results of the comparison of interdisciplinary citations.On the other hand,the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of sociology and law to economics are quite high,while the percentage of interdisciplinary citation of politics to economics is low.We think that the lack of interdisciplinary journals and the lack of researchers are two key reasons for the underdevelopment of interdisciplinary research in China.
Encoding the Citation Life-Cycle: the Operationalization of a Literature-Aging Conceptual Model

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a new literature-aging conceptual model to study the citation curve and discuss its implications. First, we improve the conceptual model by adding a period to describe the "death" of citations. Second, we offer a feasible operationalization for this conceptual model and implement a set of cross-discipline publications in the Web of Science to test its performance. Furthermore, we propose two measurements according to the new model-"Sleeping Period" and "Recognition Period"-to capture publications' citation curve patterns. For instance, we find that half of the papers in Arts & Humanities published in 1985 receive no or extremely few citations in the first 5 years after their publication; after that, on average, those papers in Arts & Humanities have a 5-year-long period when their citations grow rapidly. In addition, we observe a special phenomenon named "literature revival" as some publications may have multiple citation life-cycles, which has received little attention from current research. Finally, we discuss the implications of our study, especially the application of the Sleeping Period and Recognition Period in improving scientific evaluation and collection development in libraries, and the inspiration of the "literature revival".
The Aging Effect in Evolving Scientific Citation Networks

Abstract:The study of citation networks is of interest to the scientific community. However, the underlying mechanism driving individual citation behavior remains imperfectly understood, despite the recent proliferation of quantitative research methods. Traditional network models normally use graph theory to consider articles as nodes and citations as pairwise relationships between them. In this paper, we propose an alternative evolutionary model based on hypergraph theory in which one hyperedge can have an arbitrary number of nodes, combined with an aging effect to reflect the temporal dynamics of scientific citation behavior. Both theoretical approximate solution and simulation analysis of the model are developed and validated using two benchmark datasets from different disciplines, i.e. publications of the American Physical Society (APS) and the Digital Bibliography & Library Project (DBLP). Further analysis indicates that the attraction of early publications will decay exponentially. Moreover, the experimental results show that the aging effect indeed has a significant influence on the description of collective citation patterns. Shedding light on the complex dynamics driving these mechanisms facilitates the understanding of the laws governing scientific evolution and the quantitative evaluation of scientific outputs.

Abstract:Using the data collected from CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index), this quantitative analysis tries to evaluate the general situation of ethnic and anthropological studies in China in 2005 and 2006. The analysis includes examining citation of papers in this field, the relations between funding and the academic papers, and the academic influence of ethnic and anthropological journals. The CSSCI-based analysis shows the progress of ethnic and anthropological studies in China in several perspectives, such as the extension of research view of Chinese scholars and their attention to the achievement of foreign colleagues.

Abstract:The paper analyses history book review data collected from CSSCI journals, and concludes that history book reviews occupy only a small portion of history literature, that most of history journals publish book reviews, that such book reviewers are all senior professionals. And that most of history book reviews nowadays are only one or three years away from the publication date of the books concerned. It also raises the questions concerning their shortage of accuracy, professionalism and academic value.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.

Abstract:What is the relationship between aging and the character of scientific advance? Prior research focuses on star scientists, their changing dates, and rates of breakthrough success through history. Analyzing more than 244 million scholars across 241 million articles over the last two centuries, we show that for all fields, periods, and impact levels, scientists research ideas and references age over time, their research is less likely to disrupt the state of science and more likely to criticize emerging work. Early success accelerates scientist aging; while changing institutions and fields and collaborating with young scientists slows it. These patterns aggregate within fields such that those with a higher proportion of older scientists experience a lower churn of ideas and more rapid individual aging, suggesting a universal link between aging, activity, and advance.

Abstract:Quantitative cultural studies have witnessed a surge with the rapid development of computer technology in recent years. Since ancient literature constitutes a long-time-span repository for human culture, with quantitative methods and ancient texts, scholars can study the genesis and progression of human history and society across historical epochs from digital perspectives. Nevertheless, traditional humanities scholars often lack the requisite technical skills, creating a demand for interactive platforms. This paper introduces the Evol platform—an online tool designed for the quantitative analysis of ancient literature. Equipped with various analysis functions and visualization tools, the Evol platform allows users to quantify literary documents through intuitive online interaction. Using this platform, we investigated three cases of cultural evolution in ancient Chinese history: (1) the changing attitude of the government towards nomadic ethnic groups; (2) the formulation and propagation of an allusion phrase related to the Battle of Muye; (3) the influence of the Book of Changes across diverse cultural domains. By showcasing cases across diverse semantic units and topics, Evol demonstrates its potential in providing efficient and low-cost experimental tools catering to the realms of culturomics, history, and philology.
