Abstract:There were abundant excavated documents in the twentieth century, of which engraved stone monuments and epigraph tablets took the first place, and could be trailed or dated back to Tang Dynasty If some scholars could exert their efforts to these, they would definitely get a new vision of Tang Dynasty literary history The main important function of these newly excavated documents consists in: first, they provide a wide range of new materials for those observer and writers; secondly, some lost documents are retrieved; thirdly, they widen our knowledge of the background of Tang literature In a word, they are the inseparable materials in an integral study of Tang literature

Abstract:Recently unearthed documents have opened new opportunities for research into the poetry of the Tang Dynasty. The newly discovered documents offer the potential for extensive research into the poets during this dynasty,such as Cui Hao' s appointed official position,Han Yu' s friends,and the position of Miao Fa within his family. Wrong information from the poets' biographies,as described in the official history books,can be corrected with this new information. With the discovery of these documents,research into the poetry of the Tang Dynasty can be expanded.

Abstract:Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern,Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties are known as the middle ancient ages in the history of Chinese literature.The newly unearthed documents will contribute to a reexamination of literary background,literary evolution,literary ontology and stylistic form of these dynasties to correct the traditional heavy reliance in literary history on longitudinal combing.First,unearthed documents play an important role for the research on regional literary history to regain the initiative.Second,the research on unearthed documents is helpful to probe into the literary phenomena buried by history.Third,unearthed documents are significant for the research of essay,especially for the further study on stylistic forms dominated by practical writing.Because unearthed documents are excavated in odds and ends by accident,they should be compared with historical recordation in study.A comprehensive perspective of social-cultural science,based on the restoration of unearthed texts,will thus shed light on the natural process of birth and growth of literature.

Abstract:The document on P.3315,Commentaries on Classic Shangshu(from Chapter YaoDian to Chapter ShunDian),was written by Sun Shi,and so it is called "Phonetics of Ancient Texts in Shangshu." The relationship between "New Text" and "Ancient Text" on P.3315 actually reflects their connection between traditional characters and popular characters,small-seal script calligraphy,and clerical calligraphy,as well as literal "New Text" and "Ancient Text." According to P.3315,we can infer the sources of "Ancient Text" in the version by Mei Ze.They are mainly derived from "Ancient Text" in the Stone Classics of the Zhengshi Reign and "Ancient Text" in Shuowen-jiezi.In addition,the "Ancient Text" in the version of Mei Ze obviously has another source,which often coincides with the Warring States text,and this part of "Ancient Text" is likely to be from the Hanshu(Book of Han),the annotations from Zheng Xuan and Han dynasty inscriptions,based on the Han Dynasty’s scholars’ understanding of "Ancient Text."

Abstract:This article is a study on the twelve newly-found letters written to Tang Xianzu by nine literators in some rare collections of Ming Dynasty.Among these letters,nine of them written by six literators were collected from abroad extant copies.These letters have never been mentioned in previous research works on Tang Xianzu.Based on other related literature,this article is to verify and explain these twelve letters historically.

Abstract:In the reception of Tang literature during the Song Dynasty, the anthology Wen cui 文粹 (Literature's Finest), compiled by the Northern Song scholar Yao Xuan 姚鉉 (968–1020) in 1011, survives as the earliest attempt by an individual scholar to provide a comprehensive overview of Tang literature. The Wen cui collected over two thousand pieces of prose and poetry, making it the largest anthology of Tang literature to circulate widely in the Song and later dynasties in multiple editions. It became famous for its polemical views of “excellence” in Tang literature, which are laid out in the preface to the anthology, and focused its selections on mid-Tang writers, especially those associated with Han Yu 韓愈 (768–824) and antiquity. In this essay, the author demonstrates that the Wen cui vision of the “finest” Tang literature was more nuanced and carefully constructed than its later reputation as simply a guwen 古文 (ancient-style prose) anthology would suggest. By analyzing the claims of the preface, Yao Xuan's unusual organizational strategies, and some key theoretical texts in the “letters discussing literature” section of the anthology, the author shows that Yao Xuan used his selections to defend the necessity of wenzhang 文章 (literary composition) in governance and literati culture more broadly defined. Although this view of literature's importance was challenged by later Daoxue adherents, the Wen cui gives us an important window on the more catholic and diverse conceptions of literature's place in the culture that flourished in the early years of the Song Dynasty.

The paper also analyses the characteristics and significance of his 155 commentaries. And according to the research, the author expounds the importance of the criticism of stories and novels written in classical Chinese for the study of criticism of ancient fiction.

Abstract:A heated discussion has been aroused after the present's paper “On the Authenticity of the Extant Edition of New Anecdotes of the Tang Dynasty” was published in Fudan Journal, No.1, 2004.As a reply to Yang Guangjiao's critical response, this paper provides more problematic points concerning the classification of the content and the deadlines of the writings in the book, which further prove that New Anecdotes of the Tang Dynasty was written in the Ming Dynasty by someone under the name of Liu Su. The paper also points out that the method used in Yang's article is not generally fit for a logical argument.

Abstract:Since Qing dynasty,scholars have discussed what the "Tang Shu" (Book of Tang ) quoted in Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era referred to. This paper reveals that it contains historical records officially compiled in Tang dynasty. In the meantime,it analyses the connotation of "Tang Shu" mentioned in the literature of Tang and Song dynasties. The study concludes that "Tang Shu" quoted in Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era should be the general name of Tang and Song literature and not a specific name of a book.

Abstract:We analyzed historical and literary documents in Chinese to gain insights into research issues, and overview our studies which utilized four different sources of text materials in this paper. We investigated the history of concepts and transliterated words in China with the Database for the Study of Modern China Thought and Literature, which contains historical documents about China between 1830 and 1930. We also attempted to disambiguate names that were shared by multiple government officers who served between 618 and 1912 and were recorded in Chinese local gazetteers. To showcase the potentials and challenges of computer-assisted analysis of Chinese literatures, we explored some interesting yet non-trivial questions about two of the Four Great Classical Novels of China: (1) Which monsters attempted to consume the Buddhist monk Xuanzang in the Journey to the West (JTTW), which was published in the 16th century, (2) Which was the most powerful monster in JTTW, and (3) Which major role smiled the most in the Dream of the Red Chamber, which was published in the 18th century. Similar approaches can be applied to the analysis and study of modern documents, such as the newspaper articles published about the 228 incident that occurred in 1947 in Taiwan.

Abstract:The common edition of The Old Tang History has many omission on the word.Now the scholars can't revise because the Song edition is incomplete seriously.The Yeshijun-collated edition that is found recently was collated on the basis. of the copy-Song edition of ChenCha Zhile Building of Ming Dynasty in Changshu.There are 65 volumes that the extant Song edition hasn't. It is a valuable remedy for the fragmentary Song edition .This dissertation attempts to make a full and accurate research on the circulation of the copy edition of ChenCha's Zhile Building and the Yeshijun-collated edition.From it we know the copy edition of Zhile Building was already incomplete at the beginning of Qing Dynasty.Henceforth it is lost.But the Yeshijun-collated edition which was considered losting is preserved in the Hunan Library.The most valuable part is the Benji through the illustration with examples on the value of Yeshijun-collated edition.

Abstract:Although Qianjia scholars of textual criticism all flaunted the banner of Han learning and criticized Song learning,their studies were to varying degrees associated with Song learning or had a background of it.In fact,the base on facts learning they advocated,which emphasizes textual evidences and the realistic attitude,has significant limitations.It is an apriorism that is based on the worship for LiuJing(six Confucian classics) and the Confucian scholars in Han dynasty.Most of them were not expert in imperial examinations,so it was difficult for them to get an official rank.They tried their best to write books,but the incomes were so low that they had to live a hard life.However difficult circumstances were,they did not just live a sequestered life,but paid considerable attention to the learning which was for a good cause and aimed at practical achievements.

Abstract:There are altogether 30collections of exchange poetry and Ci in the Tang Dynasty.This article aims at the study of the compiler,compiling,purpose,stylistic rules,and the overall characteristics,appraisal,circulation,preservation and loss of the collections.It is pointed out that the exchange poetry and Ci gradually became one of the major academic communications between men of letters and had a profound impact on the later poetry and Ci composition.
CONNOTATORS, BLENDED SPACES, AND FIGURES OF GRAMMAR: REFLECTIONS ON TRADITIONAL CHINESE POETICS THROUGH A SEMIOTIC STUDY OF SU MANSHU’S POETRY

Abstract:This essay probes into the craft and criteria of traditional Chinese poetry through a study of Su Manshu’s poetry. Su Manshu has been praised as one of the last representative figures of classical Chinese poetry, while his distinctive poetic techniques rendered him a precursor of the New Literary Movement in the early years of the Republic of China. A semiotic examination of Su Manshu’s poetry and its intricate relationship with tradition and transformation in Late Qing literary arena makes an ideal case study of the criteria of classical Chinese poetry. Su Manshu’s poetry is interwoven with connotative elaboration —allusions, metaphors and multifarious figures of speech. Meanwhile, function words, colloquial markers and illocutionary acts play in its “less poetic” grammar, making it the construction of both archaic and modern transmutations in the era of paradigm shifts. The approaches of semiotics and linguistics are expected to offer novel perspectives of the poet, providing a methodology hitherto rarely used, if ever, in studies of Chinese poetics.

Abstract:China's wenxianxue (bibliographic study of classical works) is an instrumental discipline centered on the methods and techniques of "working on documents." It provides reliable texts and materials for other disciplines,but also needs to give consideration to its own distinctive features and academic aspirations.Its research topics should focus on the documents themselves,rather than being confined to the methods and techniques of textual collation.Textuality,materiality,historicity,and sociality are the four most important elements of the literature,and the bibliographic study of classical literature should involve the holistic study of all four elements.If we analyze the historicity of the literature longitudinally and reveal its sociality horizontally,combining internal documentary research with research external to the documents,we may be able to attempt the creation of holistic research on "living" literature.
