A Study on Teaching of PhD Candidates ’ Academic English Writing---Cultural Impact upon Chinese Students’ Rhetoric in Academic Writing

Abstract:Many researchers ,such as Kaplan (1976) ,Connor (1996) and Hyland (2003) have found that L2 learners ,particularly Asian students write research papers which often seem “unclear”or“out of focus”to the native reader ,because they tend to employ a rhetoric and a mode of thinking w hich are not accepted by the Western academic community .This research explores the students’ self‐evalua‐tion and their perceived challenges and rhetoric problems in academic w riting through a questionnaire survey ,an interview and a final paper analysis .The result shows that Chinese culture influences the students ,to a great extent ,in their pattern of rhetoric and way of thinking .
