A Review of Researches on Relapse Following Treatment for Stuttering

Abstract:Scientific research on the effectiveness of treatment and relapse following treatment for stuttering has been reviewed in the paper. The data-based research reveals two methods of studying relapse. First, attempts are made to isolate predictors of relapse. Although some promising factors that predict relapse have been isolated, such as pretreatment severity, post-treatment immediate anxiety level, few factors could be considered reliable determinants of relapse. Several factors in combination may provide a reasonably valid prediction of relapse such as frequency of stuttering, speech attitudes, speech rate, personality, locus of control and self-help factors. Second, the effectiveness of anti-relapse strategies is evaluated. The anti-relapse strategies can reduce the risk of relapse and prevent relapse significantly.
