Study on Situations of Leading to Smoking Quitting Relapse

Abstract:Objective: To explore situations inducing smoking qnitting relapse.Methods:Married male smokers in Hangzhou were surveyed about their smoking cessation behaviors using a house hold interviewing. Families inculding were selected using multiple-stratified randomized sampling. Within each selected family, one member was randomly chosen to be interviewed. The survey content included current smoking status,demographic characteristics of the smoker, age starting smoking, and situations related to relapse. The situations inducing relapse were ranked according to frequency of the responses.Results:1922 eligible questionnaires were obtained from 1976 family members. We identified 904 smokers among them, the smoking prevalence was 47.03%. Of this group, 201(22.23%) had previously quit smoking at least once. The situations related to relapse, in order of frequency, included social contact(34.33%), positive emotion(13.43%),negative emotion(13.43%), loneliness(8.46%)and after a meal(7.46%).Conclusion:Smoking is a serious problem in Chinese male, the results of this study may serve as a basis for development of future smoking cessation programs in China.
