Discussion on a New Definition of Community Education

Abstract:Since 1990s,scholars in China have discussed the concept of community education from different perspectives,and put forward the definition as the combination of"community"and"education". Yet these definitions usually emphasized functions as the substitutive characteristics of community education. Words such as improving cultural quality of residents,promoting the develop-ment of community,etc. were usually used to define it. However,functional definitions cannot clearly distinguish community education from other activities in community,as well as other forms of education. This article define"community education"as non-academic, non-certified(occupation certification),non-profit educational activities and process that institutions in certain region utilize various re-sources to organize. The new concept will help us to understand the connotation and denotation of community education,to establish more effective and efficient community education development mechanisms,and to better push forward community education into com-munity governance process.
