Abstract:Educators must make decisions about learner expectations and skills on which to focus when it comes to laboratory activities. There are various approaches but the general pattern is to encourage students to measure ordered pairs, plot a graph to establish linear dependence, and then compute the slope of the best-fit line for an eventual scientific conclusion. To assist educators when they also want to include slope uncertainty dependent upon measurement uncertainty as part of the expected analysis, we demonstrate a physical approach so that both educators and their students have a convenient roadmap to follow. A popular alternative that educators often choose is to rely solely on statistical metrics to establish the tolerance of the technique, but we argue the statistical strategy can distract students away from the true meaning of the uncertainty that is inherent in the act of making the measurements. We will carry these measurement error bars from their points of origin through the regression analysis to consistently establish the physical error bars for the slope and the intercept. We then demonstrate the technique using an introductory physics experiment with a purpose of measuring the speed of sound in air.

Abstract:Uncertainty is an important and fundamental concept in physics education. Students are often first exposed to uncertainty in introductory labs, expand their knowledge across lab courses, and then are introduced to quantum mechanical uncertainty in upper-division courses. This study is part of a larger project evaluating student thinking about uncertainty across these contexts. In this research, we investigate advanced physics student thinking about uncertainty by asking them conceptual questions about how a hypothetical distribution of measurements would change if `more' or `better' data were collected in four different experimental scenarios. The scenarios include both classical and quantum experiments, as well as experiments that theoretically result in an expected single value or an expected distribution. This investigation is motivated by our goal of finding insights into students' potential point- and set-like thinking about uncertainty and of shining light on the limitations of those binary paradigms.

Abstract:Measurement uncertainty is an important topic in the undergraduate laboratory curriculum. Previous research on student thinking about experimental measurement uncertainty has focused primarily on introductory-level students' procedural reasoning about data collection and interpretation. In this paper, we extended this prior work to study upper-level students' thinking about sources of measurement uncertainty across experimental contexts, with a particular focus on classical and quantum mechanics contexts. We developed a survey to probe students' thinking in the generic question "What comes to mind when you think about measurement uncertainty in [classical/quantum] mechanics?" as well as in a range of specific experimental scenarios and interpreted student responses through the lens of availability and accessibility of knowledge pieces. We found that limitations of the experimental setup were most accessible to students in classical mechanics while principles of the underlying physics theory were most accessible to students in quantum mechanics, even in a context in which this theory was not relevant. We recommend that future research probe which sources of uncertainty experts believe are relevant in which contexts and how instruction in both classical and quantum contexts can help students draw on appropriate sources of uncertainty in classical and quantum experiments.

Comparing introductory and beyond-introductory students' reasoning about uncertainty

Abstract:Uncertainty is an important concept in physics laboratory instruction. However, little work has examined how students reason about uncertainty beyond the introductory (intro) level. In this work we aimed to compare intro and beyond-intro students' ideas about uncertainty. We administered a survey to students at 10 different universities with questions probing procedural reasoning about measurement, student-identified sources of uncertainty, and predictive reasoning about data distributions. We found that intro and beyond-intro students answered similarly on questions where intro students already exhibited expert-level reasoning, such as in comparing two data sets with the same mean but different spreads, identifying limitations in an experimental setup, and predicting how a data distribution would change if more data were collected. For other questions, beyond-intro students generally exhibited more expert-like reasoning than intro students, such as when determining whether two sets of data agree, identifying principles of measurement that contribute to spread, and predicting how a data distribution would change if better data were collected. Neither differences in student populations, lab courses taken, nor research experience were able to fully explain the variability between intro and beyond-intro student responses. These results call for further research to better understand how students' ideas about uncertainty develop beyond the intro level.

Abstract:Uncertainty accompanies our life processes and covers almost all fields of scientific studies. Two general categories of uncertainty, namely, aleatory uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty, exist in the world. While aleatory uncertainty refers to the inherent randomness in nature, derived from natural variability of the physical world (e. g., random show of a flipped coin), epistemic uncertainty origins from human's lack of knowledge of the physical world, as well as ability of measuring and modeling the physical world (e.g., computation of the distance between two cities). Different kinds of uncertainty call for different handling methods. Aggarwal, Yu, Sarma, and Zhang et al. have made good surveys on uncertain database management based on the probability theory. This paper reviews multidisciplinary uncertainty processing activities in diverse fields. Beyond the dominant probability theory and fuzzy theory, we also review information-gap theory and recently derived uncertainty theory. Practices of these uncertainty handling theories in the domains of economics, engineering, ecology, and information sciences are also described. It is our hope that this study could provide insights to the database community on how uncertainty is managed in other disciplines, and further challenge and inspire database researchers to develop more advanced data management techniques and tools to cope with a variety of uncertainty issues in the real world.

Abstract:Measurement uncertainty is a critical feature of experimental research in the physical sciences, and the concepts and practices surrounding measurement uncertainty are important components of physics lab courses. However, there has not been a broadly applicable, research-based assessment tool that allows physics instructors to easily measure students' knowledge of measurement uncertainty concepts and practices. To address this need, we employed Evidence-Centered Design to create the Survey of Physics Reasoning on Uncertainty Concepts in Experiments (SPRUCE). SPRUCE is a pre-post assessment instrument intended for use in introductory (first- and second-year) physics lab courses to help instructors and researchers identify student strengths and challenges with measurement uncertainty. In this paper, we discuss the development of SPRUCE's assessment items guided by Evidence-Centered Design, focusing on how instructors' and researchers' assessment priorities were incorporated into the assessment items and how students' reasoning from pilot testing informed decisions around item answer options. We also present an example of some of the feedback an instructor would receive after implementing SPRUCE in a pre-post fashion, along with a brief discussion of how that feedback could be interpreted and acted upon.

Abstract:Interpreting experimental data in high school experiments can be a difficult task for students, especially when there is large variation in the data. At the same time, calculating the standard deviation poses a challenge for students. In this article, we look at alternative uncertainty measures to describe the variation in data sets. A comparison is done in terms of mathematical complexity and statistical quality. The determination of mathematical complexity is based on different mathematics curricula. The statistical quality is determined using a Monte Carlo simulation in which these uncertainty measures are compared to the standard deviation. Results indicate that an increase in complexity goes hand in hand with quality. Additionally, we propose a sequence of these uncertainty measures with increasing mathematical complexity and increasing quality. As such, this work provides a theoretical background to implement uncertainty measures suitable for different educational levels.

Abstract:Physics lab courses are an essential part of the physics undergraduate curriculum. Learning goals for these classes often include the ability to interpret measurements and uncertainties. The Physics Measurement Questionnaire (PMQ) is an established open-response survey that probes students' understanding of measurement uncertainty along three dimensions: data collection, data analysis, and data comparison. It classifies students' reasoning into point-like and set-like paradigms, with the set-like paradigm more aligned with expert reasoning. In the context of a course transformation effort at the University of Colorado Boulder, we examine over 500 student responses to the PMQ both before and after instruction in the pre-transformed course. We describe changes in students' overall reasoning, measured by aggregating four probes of the PMQ. In particular, we observe large shifts towards set-like reasoning by the end of the course.

Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making

Abstract:Uncertainty theory is an area in axiomatic mathematics recently proposed by Professor Baoding Liu and aiming to deal with belief degrees. Retrieving 1004 journal articles from the Web of Science database between 2008 and 2019, and utilizing CiteSpace and Pajek software, we analyze the publications per year and by geographical distribution, productive scholars and their cooperation, key journals, highly cited articles and main paths of the field. In this way, seven key sub-fields of uncertainty theory and their research potential are derived. The results show the following: (1) The literature on uncertainty theory follows a linear growth trend, involves an extensive network of 1000 scholars worldwide and is published in 300 journals, indicating thus that uncertainty theory has become increasingly attractive, and its academic influence is gradually expanding. (2) Seven key sub-fields of uncertainty theory have clearly been identified, including the axiomatic system, uncertain programming, uncertain sets, uncertain logic, uncertain differential equations, uncertain risk analysis, and uncertain processes. Among them, uncertain differential equations and programming are the two main sub-fields with the largest numbers of published papers. Furthermore, for evaluating the research potential of sub-fields, maturity and recent attention indicators are calculated using the citations, total number of publications, quantity of most cited literature and half-life. Based on these indicators, uncertain processes shows the greatest development potential, and has remained a hot topic in recent years, being mainly concentrated on the uncertain renewal reward process, optimal control of discrete-time uncertain systems, and uncertain linear quadratic optimal control. Additionally, uncertain risk analysis is ranked second, and focuses on the analysis of expected losses, investment risk, and structural reliability of uncertain systems.

Abstract:Aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties can be represented probabilistically in mechanical systems. However, the distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties are also uncertain due to sparsely available or inaccurate uncertainty information. Therefore, a unified reliability measure method that considers uncertainties of input variables and their distribution parameters simultaneously is proposed. The uncertainty information for distribution parameters of epistemic uncertainties could be as a result of insufficient data or interval information, which is represented with evidence theory. The probability density function of uncertain distribution parameters is constructed through fusing insufficient data and interval information based on a Gaussian interpolation algorithm, and the epistemic uncertainties are represented using a weighted sum of probability variables based on discrete distribution parameters. The reliability index considering aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties is calculated around the most probable point. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through comparison with the Monte Carlo method in the engineering example of a crank-slider mechanism and composite laminated plate.

Abstract:Pervasive computing is typically highly sensor-driven, but sensors provide only evidence of fact rather than facts themselves. The uncertainty of sensor data will affect each component in a pervasive computing system, which may decrease the quality of its provided services. We provide a general model to represent semantics of uncertainty in different levels (e.g., sensor, lower-level context and higher-level context). Within our model, fine-grained approaches are applied to evaluate and propagate uncertainties. They will help to resolve the uncertainty in each process of context management so that the effect of uncertainty on system services will be minimised.

Abstract:Uncertainty in machine learning is not generally taught as general knowledge in Machine Learning course curricula. In this paper we propose a short curriculum for a course about uncertainty in machine learning, and complement the course with a selection of use cases, aimed to trigger discussion and let students play with the concepts of uncertainty in a programming setting. Our use cases cover the concept of output uncertainty, Bayesian neural networks and weight distributions, sources of uncertainty, and out of distribution detection. We expect that this curriculum and set of use cases motivates the community to adopt these important concepts into courses for safety in AI.

Abstract:It is inevitable to bring about uncertainty during the process of data acquisition, derivation, and visualization. Different from data error and data conflict, uncertainty resides in and propagates along each stage of the visualization pipeline. Uncertainty is an important ingredient of data. Visualizing uncertainty can help the analysts gain insight into the data to make better decisions. In this paper, first we introduce the main sources of uncertainty; then we summarize the state-of-the-art uncertainty visualization approaches into four categories: glyph, visual variable encoding, geometry, and animation; at last we outline some directions requiring further studies.

Abstract:Uncertain statistics is a set of mathematical techniques rooted in uncertainty theory to collect, analyze, and interpret data. To explore the applicability of uncertain statistics in practice, this paper uses uncertain statistical models to model and predict the enrollment numbers of students in general colleges and universities in China, and illustrates the advantages of uncertain statistical methods compared with traditional probabilistic statistical methods. Specifically, some uncertain statistical tools, including uncertain time series analysis, uncertain regression analysis, and uncertain differential equations, are used to model and predict the collected data in this paper. Following that, uncertain hypothesis test is also employed to verify the applicabilities of the estimated uncertain statistical models. In addition, this paper points out the reasons for choosing the uncertain statistical methods instead of the probabilistic statistical methods by analyzing the characteristics of the corresponding residuals plots.

Abstract:We present a home-lab experimental activity, successfully proposed to our students during covid19 pandemic, based on \textit{state-of-the-art} technologies to teach error analysis and uncertainties to science and engineering students. In the last decade the appearance of smartphones considerably affected our daily life. Thanks to their built-in sensors, this revolution has impacted in many areas and, in particular, the educational field. Here we show how to use smartphone sensors to teach fundamental concepts for science students such as any measurement is useless unless a confidence interval is specified or how to determine if a result agrees with a model, or to discern a new phenomenon from others already known. We explain how to obtain and analyse experimental fluctuations and discuss in relation with the Gaussian distribution. In another application we show how to determine the optimal number of measurements as a function of the standard error and the digital resolution of a given sensor.
