How to Understand Parmenides ESTI

Abstract:There are many discussions and interpretations around the single word esti,by which Par-menides shows his way of truth.English translators render it into ‘is’,dealing with it,of which the interpretations are involved in its sense of predication on the one hand and in its sense of existence on the other.Chinese translators render it into CUNZAI,a Chinese word that literally means existence, insisting that the translated version is in accordance with the English understanding of the original no-tion.This paper attempts to show that the Chinese translation is problematic,as it eliminates the sense of predication in both the Greek ‘esti’and the English ‘is’.Furthermore,there are also problems with its corresponding interpretations,which confuse language itself and what the language expresses. The paper maintains that ‘esti’and ‘is’should be translated into SHI,a Chinese word that literally has the copulative sense,so that the Chinese translation would provide the possibility for dealing with its sense of existence,while keeping its sense of predication.The paper also shows that the translation and interpretation of Parmenides?esti are important not only for understanding Parmenides but also for understanding the question of being in Western philosophy in general.
