Abstract:Language is a unique ability of human beings, and one of the standards of language is to express information clearly, but there are ambiguities in language. Ambiguity can be found on many occasions. It is not useless; on the contrary, it is interesting that it can play a positive role in helping people achieve certain value-added speech and communication purposes. So sometimes people try to eliminate ambiguities, but sometimes, language users also deliberately create ambiguities. But at the same time, ambiguous sentences not only have an impact on communication, but also bring inconvenience to computer language recognition, machine translation, human-computer dialogue and language information processing. From the language level, the reasons for the formation of ambiguity are mainly divided into 5 aspects, namely, phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, semantics and pragmatics. This article analyzes the reasons for the generation of ambiguous sentences and the classification of ambiguous sentences, and mainly discusses the syntactic generation of ambiguous sentences. I hope that the in-depth discussion of ambiguity in this article will deepen the understanding of ambiguity.

On the basis of the summing of the aspects, that is the definition of ambiguity, classification of ambiguity, ambiguous pattern, ambiguousgrade and interpretation of ambiguity, combining the theories of the three dimensions, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and functional linguistics, it examines closely the ambiguity again and points out the value and the prospet of the ambiguity study in Chinese.

Abstract:Ambiguity is an critical component of language that allows for more effective communication between speakers, but is often ignored in NLP. Recent work suggests that NLP systems may struggle to grasp certain elements of human language understanding because they may not handle ambiguities at the level that humans naturally do in communication. Additionally, different types of ambiguity may serve different purposes and require different approaches for resolution, and we aim to investigate how language models' abilities vary across types. We propose a taxonomy of ambiguity types as seen in English to facilitate NLP analysis. Our taxonomy can help make meaningful splits in language ambiguity data, allowing for more fine-grained assessments of both datasets and model performance.

Abstract:How do children develop the mapping between prosody and other levels of linguistic knowledge? This question has received considerable attention in child language research. In the present study two experiments were conducted to investigate four- to five-year-old Mandarin-speaking children's sensitivity to prosody in ambiguity resolution. Experiment 1 used eye-tracking to assess children's use of stress in resolving structural ambiguities. Experiment 2 took advantage of special properties of Mandarin to investigate whether children can use intonational cues to resolve ambiguities involving speech acts. The results of our experiments show that children's use of prosodic information in ambiguity resolution varies depending on the type of ambiguity involved. Children can use prosodic information more effectively to resolve speech act ambiguities than to resolve structural ambiguities. This finding suggests that the mapping between prosody and semantics/pragmatics in young children is better established than the mapping between prosody and syntax.

Abstract:Abstract As research into the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) intensifies, questions on the implications of the findings for English Language Teaching (ELT) are increasingly being raised. In this regard, research on misunderstanding in ELF has much to offer ELT practitioners. Awareness of what causes misunderstanding means that learners can be trained to take relevant measures to avoid the triggers that contribute to the problem. Among these, ambiguity has been identified as a major source of ELF misunderstanding. This article investigates further the role of ambiguity in triggering misunderstanding and examines some of the practices speakers employ to increase the explicitness of what they say. Based on conversation analytic procedures, speakers were found to enhance the clarity of their talk through the use of a parenthetical remark that provides illustration, description, definition, and comparison of similarity or dissimilarity. Learning activities that provide learners with opportunities to use the aforementioned can contribute to developing in learners the ability to communicate effectively in lingua franca settings.

We're Afraid Language Models Aren't Modeling Ambiguity

Abstract:Ambiguity is an intrinsic feature of natural language. Managing ambiguity is a key part of human language understanding, allowing us to anticipate misunderstanding as communicators and revise our interpretations as listeners. As language models (LMs) are increasingly employed as dialogue interfaces and writing aids, handling ambiguous language is critical to their success. We characterize ambiguity in a sentence by its effect on entailment relations with another sentence, and collect AmbiEnt, a linguist-annotated benchmark of 1,645 examples with diverse kinds of ambiguity. We design a suite of tests based on AmbiEnt, presenting the first evaluation of pretrained LMs to recognize ambiguity and disentangle possible meanings. We find that the task remains extremely challenging, including for GPT-4, whose generated disambiguations are considered correct only 32% of the time in human evaluation, compared to 90% for disambiguations in our dataset. Finally, to illustrate the value of ambiguity-sensitive tools, we show that a multilabel NLI model can flag political claims in the wild that are misleading due to ambiguity. We encourage the field to rediscover the importance of ambiguity for NLP.

Abstract:Most previous studies concerning the ambiguity effect in language processing have focused more attention on monolingual subjects than on bilingual subjects. This study, by dividing lexical ambiguity into homonymy, metaphorical polysemy and metonymic polysemy, explores the ambiguity effect in lexical processing by Chinese EFL learners with different English proficiency levels through a lexical decision task. The results indicate that there exist significantly different ambiguity effects among varying types of ambiguous words, and such effects are modulated by the subjects' English proficiency levels. On the basis of the "feedback account," a developmental path of bilingual representation of ambiguous words is proposed, after a discussion of its implications for ambiguous word learning.

Analyzing and discussing its type and disambiguation strategies will contribute to improve the accuracy of Chinese syntactic parsing system. Abstract:Ambiguity is neither political tactics,nor rhetoric skill,but the important noumenal property of literature.The fundamental reason giving birth to ambiguity is that literature language is organized according to individual emotional logic,but not realistic logic.The tension between emotional logic and realistic logic makes the magnetic field of ambiguity,which imitates the diffusing property of feeling's flesh.There is a main sequence which transcends realistic logic and creates feeling logic continually in pre-Song poetry history: the image is the most important way that the language leaves realistic logic and creates emotional logic;in one continuous sequence,Wu Ti Shi is the more fargoing pursuit of ambiguity,which losts its topic,meanwhile,it losts the explicit interrelation between its general meaning with its realistic point.The retrospection of such history is helpful for our rethink of the relationship between the modern poetry ambiguity and the traditional poetry ambiguity.

Abstract:Due to its ambiguous nature, culture is one of the most difficult human phenomenons to define. Sociologists and Linguists are continuously expanding the aspects of what constitutes culture in an effort to understand how our individual identities can coexist as simultaneous members of a global community. This paper analysed various theories and literature in relation to the concept of culture in an effort to determine the effect it has on English as a second language (ESL) students. It discovered that although spoken and written discourse is integral to succeeding in a community, there are several non-linguistic methods of communication that can help ESL students to participate and become accepted members of their chosen second language society. This paper also compared the differences between individual and collective cultures and the social and environmental impact they can have on its participants.

Abstract:In this study, we compare ambiguity attitudes—ambiguity aversion and ambiguity-generated insensitivity (a-insensitivity)—toward natural and artificial sources of ambiguity in gain and loss domains with the participation of individuals with various attributes. In our experiment, we use precipitation during the rainy season as a natural source of ambiguity and the Ellsberg-type box as an artificial source. We find that people are more a-insensitive toward the natural source than the artificial source, even though the outcomes are identical. Additionally, people with low cognitive reflection ability are more a-insensitive than those with high cognitive reflection ability. Thus, people with low cognitive reflection ability have more difficulty in identifying likelihood under ambiguity and tend to view the likelihood of all uncertain events to be equal. Furthermore, we examine the relationships between ambiguity attitudes and real-world behaviors with regard to flood preparedness. In the group with high cognitive reflection ability, people with higher a-insensitivity are less likely to adopt flood preparedness behaviors in the gain domain of the natural source. However, we do not find any relationship between ambiguity attitudes and flood preparedness behaviors in the artificial source. Thus, applying ambiguity attitudes toward natural sources is worth considering when explaining real-world behaviors based on ambiguity attitudes.

In the past two centuries, there once arose two debates on the relation between formal resemblance and spiritual resemblance, bearing which in mind, this article hereupon brings perspectives from many a facet into order and analysis for the sake of the discovery of the crux of the conflict. Henceforth, by means of such concepts as form, meaning and content, a boundary between form and spirit is newly set, whereupon new approaches have been touched upon to provide a solution to this conflict.

Abstract:Three tasks were reported to examine the effect of ambiguity awareness on Chinese-speaking English learners’ use of prosody in resolving prepositional-phrase attachment ambiguity. In the first (Task 1) and second (Task 2) tasks, listeners were not informed of the syntactic ambiguity. In the third task (Task 3), listeners were given the specific information about syntactic ambiguity. The analysis of the overall accuracy rate showed that before receiving specific information about syntactic ambiguity, learners did not detect the ambiguity within the structure and tended to interpret the sentence in a “good-enough” heuristic to reduce the computational burden. After being aware of the syntactic ambiguity, they could use prosodic cues to resolve the ambiguity. However, the finding that the learners reversed their parsing bias from verb phrase attachment (VP-attachment) toward noun phrase attachment (NP-attachment) indicated their difficulty in integrating prosodic information to syntactic structure efficiently. The analysis of individual accuracy rate demonstrated learners’ individual variations in using prosodic cues. The result suggests that learners’ failure to use prosodic cues may be attributed to a lack of ambiguity awareness and difficulty in information integration, rather than their low sensitivity to prosodic cues.
