Abstract:Language is a unique ability of human beings, and one of the standards of language is to express information clearly, but there are ambiguities in language. Ambiguity can be found on many occasions. It is not useless; on the contrary, it is interesting that it can play a positive role in helping people achieve certain value-added speech and communication purposes. So sometimes people try to eliminate ambiguities, but sometimes, language users also deliberately create ambiguities. But at the same time, ambiguous sentences not only have an impact on communication, but also bring inconvenience to computer language recognition, machine translation, human-computer dialogue and language information processing. From the language level, the reasons for the formation of ambiguity are mainly divided into 5 aspects, namely, phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, semantics and pragmatics. This article analyzes the reasons for the generation of ambiguous sentences and the classification of ambiguous sentences, and mainly discusses the syntactic generation of ambiguous sentences. I hope that the in-depth discussion of ambiguity in this article will deepen the understanding of ambiguity.

Abstract:How do children develop the mapping between prosody and other levels of linguistic knowledge? This question has received considerable attention in child language research. In the present study two experiments were conducted to investigate four- to five-year-old Mandarin-speaking children's sensitivity to prosody in ambiguity resolution. Experiment 1 used eye-tracking to assess children's use of stress in resolving structural ambiguities. Experiment 2 took advantage of special properties of Mandarin to investigate whether children can use intonational cues to resolve ambiguities involving speech acts. The results of our experiments show that children's use of prosodic information in ambiguity resolution varies depending on the type of ambiguity involved. Children can use prosodic information more effectively to resolve speech act ambiguities than to resolve structural ambiguities. This finding suggests that the mapping between prosody and semantics/pragmatics in young children is better established than the mapping between prosody and syntax.

Abstract:Pragmatic ambivalence refers to a linguistic phenomenon in which the communicator uses vague or ambiguous words to convey the illocutionary force to the other party in a specific context. It is an indispensable communicative strategy for successful communication in daily communication activities. Relevance theory can explain pragmatic ambivalence from three aspects: intentional relevance, contextual relevance and relevance reasoning. Therefore, relevance theory has strong explanatory power and applicability for pragmatic ambivalence as a communicative strategy. Using relevance theory to study pragmatic ambivalence is conducive to people’s further understanding of pragmatic ambivalence as a linguistic phenomenon, and has a very positive significance for the research and development of ambivalence in pragmatics.

Abstract:There are significant differences between Chinese and Western cultures, particularly in terms of communication styles. Westerners tend to be more direct in their way of speaking, often expressing their intentions in a straightforward manner. In contrast, Chinese people, influenced by their traditional culture, tend to speak in a more indirect and roundabout way. They are accustomed to expressing their ideas and purposes in a euphemistic manner. Chinese speakers typically begin with a prelude, using indirect language to convey their true intentions. They then gradually transition to the main topic, unraveling the mystery step by step. This roundabout way of speaking is why euphemisms are commonly used in Chinese communication. The use of euphemisms is preferred by people from various backgrounds for several reasons. Euphemisms allow individuals to avoid the bluntness of direct expression, creating a more comforting atmosphere for communication. They also take into consideration the feelings and emotions of the listener, maintaining the dignity of all parties involved in the conversation. Furthermore, the use of euphemisms contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of communication. By exploring the pragmatic function of euphemisms, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meanings behind the words. This understanding allows for the mastery of appropriate communication skills and facilitates effective communication. In this article, the author will analyze the pragmatic meaning of euphemisms from three perspectives: the avoidance function, the politeness function, and the concealment function. This analysis will be supplemented with specific cases to reveal the pragmatic significance of euphemisms and enhance the readers’ comprehension of their usage.

Abstract:Ambiguity is neither political tactics,nor rhetoric skill,but the important noumenal property of literature.The fundamental reason giving birth to ambiguity is that literature language is organized according to individual emotional logic,but not realistic logic.The tension between emotional logic and realistic logic makes the magnetic field of ambiguity,which imitates the diffusing property of feeling's flesh.There is a main sequence which transcends realistic logic and creates feeling logic continually in pre-Song poetry history: the image is the most important way that the language leaves realistic logic and creates emotional logic;in one continuous sequence,Wu Ti Shi is the more fargoing pursuit of ambiguity,which losts its topic,meanwhile,it losts the explicit interrelation between its general meaning with its realistic point.The retrospection of such history is helpful for our rethink of the relationship between the modern poetry ambiguity and the traditional poetry ambiguity.

Abstract:Natural language is the contradictory unity of accuracy and fuzziness,determinacy and indeterminacy.Its numerous words have accurate meanings so that their meanings expressed in sentences are definite.But there are many of its words whose meanings are fuzzy and indefinite in sentences.Structuralism and deconstructionism have different views about whether linguistic meaning is definite or not.This paper demonstrates indeterminacy of linguistic meaning at lexical and syntactic levels,holding the view that indeterminacy of linguistic meaning is mainly embodied in fuzziness and ambiguity of meaning.

Abstract:Through historic reflection of the definition of ambiguity,this paper thinks that we should distinguish ambiguity from polysemy,purposely creating ambiguity in rhetoric,misunderstanding or misinterpretation.It is made clear that the environment in which ambiguity occurs is context,that the subject is speaker or writer and ambiguity is caused unintentionally,that the material is polysemy language form and that the mechanism by which ambiguity occurs is that polysemy of language can not be dispelled in context.Ambiguity can be defined as the phenomenon in which speaker or writer unintentionally expresses two or more meanings without violation of grammatical rules and logic rules in the specific context.

Abstract:This paper explores how ambiguity affects communication. We consider a cheap talk model in which the receiver evaluates the sender's message with respect to its worst-case expected payoff generated by multiplier preferences. We characterize the receiver's optimal strategy and show that the receiver's posterior action is consistent with his ex-ante action. We find that in some situations, ambiguity improves communication by shifting the receiver's optimal action upwards, and these situations are not rare.

Abstract:Business negotiation is a complex process of communication. It is generally believed that, using precise language is encouraged for fear of causing misunderstanding and inconvenience in business negotiation. However, from this point of view, it ignores a fact that vagueness is an inherent property of human language. Since the fuzzy theory was put forward in the 1960s, scholars have made much systematic researches on vague language from various perspectives only to find that the initial study on semantics can not thoroughly explain the linguistic phenomenon. So they preferred to a comprehensive and profound analysis from the perspective of pragmatics. Gradually, the pragmatic value and significance has been reflected. As a matter of fact, in business negotiation, using vague language has been regarded as a kind of frequently-used and effective negotiation strategy to achieve certain communicative purpose. As one of the pragmatic strategies in business negotiation, vague language is of great importance which should be highly expected. Therefore, the author hopes that the present study may be of some significance in enriching the researches on vague language. Meanwhile, the study can draw some inspiration to negotiators and some reference to business English teaching. Because the appropriate use of vagueness can help negotiators to communicate smoothly and achieve their goals successfully.

Abstract:This paper summarizes comprehensively the studies of the ambiguity in Chinese over last fifty years, mainly according to the times. On the basis of the summing of the aspects, that is the definition of ambiguity, classification of ambiguity, ambiguous pattern, ambiguousgrade and interpretation of ambiguity, combining the theories of the three dimensions, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and functional linguistics, it examines closely the ambiguity again and points out the value and the prospet of the ambiguity study in Chinese.

Abstract:Abstract As research into the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) intensifies, questions on the implications of the findings for English Language Teaching (ELT) are increasingly being raised. In this regard, research on misunderstanding in ELF has much to offer ELT practitioners. Awareness of what causes misunderstanding means that learners can be trained to take relevant measures to avoid the triggers that contribute to the problem. Among these, ambiguity has been identified as a major source of ELF misunderstanding. This article investigates further the role of ambiguity in triggering misunderstanding and examines some of the practices speakers employ to increase the explicitness of what they say. Based on conversation analytic procedures, speakers were found to enhance the clarity of their talk through the use of a parenthetical remark that provides illustration, description, definition, and comparison of similarity or dissimilarity. Learning activities that provide learners with opportunities to use the aforementioned can contribute to developing in learners the ability to communicate effectively in lingua franca settings.

Abstract:Ambiguity is an critical component of language that allows for more effective communication between speakers, but is often ignored in NLP. Recent work suggests that NLP systems may struggle to grasp certain elements of human language understanding because they may not handle ambiguities at the level that humans naturally do in communication. Additionally, different types of ambiguity may serve different purposes and require different approaches for resolution, and we aim to investigate how language models' abilities vary across types. We propose a taxonomy of ambiguity types as seen in English to facilitate NLP analysis. Our taxonomy can help make meaningful splits in language ambiguity data, allowing for more fine-grained assessments of both datasets and model performance.

Abstract:With the rapid developments of science and technology, it appears that the best way to get much information is to appreciate some news items, because they are objectively facts and data that are easy for us to comprehend. However, if there is no vague language in newspapers, the reliability and veracity will be reduced to the degree, and the news items will not be trust-worthy at all. So this research paper aims to analyze certain samples selected from some English newspapers by means of Grice’s Cooperative Principle so as to demonstrate that vague language can effectively stand out the accuracy of the English newspapers. Consequently, the paper reveals that the vague language helps and strengthens the artistic effects of the news items which cannot be expressed directly by the exact number or detailed information in the English newspapers. In addition, all the readers may benefit from this research paper and have the deep appreciations of the vagueness as well.
