Summary of Researches on the Hmong Miao in Southeast Asia Done by Western Scholars

Abstract:Previous anthropological research on Miao/Hmong by Chinese scholars has mainly been limited to the groups within China .However , the importance of Miao/Hmong's transnational and emigrational nature has recently drawn the attention of certain scholars to the large population of Hmong in the Southeast Asian countries :Laos, Viet-nam, Thailand and Myanmar/Burma.Although Chinese scholars have increasing opportunities to continue research in this field, there is already a large body of work related to this population , mainly the work of western anthropologists , missionaries and scholars , who have been working on this field for over a century .This article takes these works as a basis , and traces the history of western scholarship on the Hmong in Southeast Asia , from the nineteenth century to the present .Following and examining the trends of academic fields , this article provides an introduction to the history and progression of Hmong research in Southeast Asia for Chinese scholars to use as a basis for future research .
