Golden Horde Review

Abstract:This review article discusses a new scientific publication of the Institute of Mongolian Studies and the Department of History of the Mongolian State University. In 2019, Steppe Publishing published a collective monograph entitled «History of the Mongol Empire» in 5 volumes. The titles of the volumes correspond to the names of the states that made up the Mongol Empire in the XIII–XIV centuries: «Mongol Empire», «Yuan Empire», «Ulus Jochi», «Ulus Ilkhanate», and «Chagatai ulus». The third volume of the monograph covers the history of the Mongols in the 13th–16th centuries. It is about the state founded by Jochi, the eldest son of Genghis Khan. This book «Ulus Jochi» is the 6th book to be published on the history of the «Golden Horde» in Mongolia, being a new fundamental work of young historians of the country. The оbjective of the study was to highlight the content of the monograph and to reveal the novelty of the recent work by Mongolia’s historians. Research materials: In the course of writing a review, the author sought to find comparative historiographic works on the topic, including those that touch on controversial issues in the history of Ulus Jochi. Results and novelty of the research from the point of view of research methodology, the collective monograph “Ulus Jochi” is written with novelty, namely in regard to its conceptual apparatus. The author of this work agrees with the main provisions and conclusions of the book under review and believes that this work has made many steps forward in studying the history of the Ulus Jochi [Golden Horde].

Reform of the Traditional Historiography and Compilation of the New History:the Purport of A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:There is abundant research on the epic Jangar, which involves many fields such as literature, culture, document, etc. The cross-study between Jangar and different disciplines boosts its continued vitality in the contemporary era. The research achievements are as follows. The comparative research is remarkable and the linkage development trend with domestic and foreign literature is optimistic. Besides, multi-channel cultural research is concurrent with steadily advanced source exploration, and the research field has expanded under multidisciplinary guidance. Outstanding achievements have been made in Jangar and Jangarology, and the research on epic development and literature collation has attracted much attention. Meanwhile, the expansion of theoretical construction and the innovation of communication methods flourish the research on Jangar. However, as for the current research situation, there are still some challenges, such as divides in basic problems, insufficient in-depth and comprehensive research fields, and hardships in implementing the inheritance and protection of intangible cultural heritage.

Abstract:Abstract The vast area of the Himalayas has historically been an important region for multiethnic cultural interaction and exchanges. Due to multiple factors such as history and politics, the overall integrity of this region is always overlooked. This region has always had a special position and unique influence in academic circles both at home and abroad. This article searched for literature on relevant academic websites such as CNKI and Springer, and used research methods such as literature research and Delphi to examine the research achievements of the Himalayan ethnic culture in both the East and the West. Research concerning Himalayan national culture in both the East and the West has facilitated many important academic achievements. By examining research results pertaining to Himalayan national culture from both the East and the West, this paper highlights the fact that Western Himalayan research has undergone enlightenment in terms of rapid development and in-depth research. For instance, the digital age has led to a diversified and multitopic academic process. However, in China, cross-regional national research on culture focused initially on the Tibetan Yi Corridor, the Ancient Tea-Horse Road and the Southern Silk Road in the beginning and subsequently emphasized multiethnic cultural exchanges across the Himalayan region. In recent years, an increasing number of research results have shown that attention to the process by which Himalayan social and cultural integrity research develops has gradually increased.

Abstract:The article analyzes the characteristics of modern world and Russian Mongolian studies, main research centers and results. In 2021, a series of scientific conferences dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Soviet-Mongolian relations were held in Russia and Mongolia, where the problems of the history of Mongolia and Russian-Mongolian relations of the twentieth century were discussed. The article gives a preliminary assessment of the joint Russian-Mongolian research project of the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research «World and Russian Mongolian Studies: national schools, personalities and problems». The article examined historiography of Russian Mongol studies and the degree of study of the history of scientific thought. The complex and debatable problems of studying history and historiography of Mongolia as well as directions of further scientific research are shown. The researchers revealed the necessity of creating a bio-bibliographic reference book «Russian and foreign researchers of Mongolia». The scientific results of the first volume of this series are presented.

Abstract:The article examines the problematic and key issues of Russian historiography, theoretical and methodological aspects of the Mongolian revolution of 1921. Topicality of the study is due to the fact that the current scientific discourse pays great attention to the study of revolutionary processes in a broader historical context, with the involvement of new methodological approaches, previously unexplored materials. The Mongolian revolution of 1921 became a turning point on the path of the socialist reorganisation of the traditional nomadic society, carrying out radical political, socio-economic changes within the framework of the young Mongolian state. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of views in Russian, Mongolian and Western historiography, historical approaches, methodology in the study of the problem under consideration, new controversial aspects of the problems of the political history of Mongolia and Russian (Soviet)-Mongolian relations are revealed. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that the analysis of historical literature showed that the Mongolian Revolution of 1921 in transnational history was a complex and multifactorial phenomenon that included both internal and external factors: the movement of the Mongols themselves towards independence and sovereignty, the advancement of revolutionary ideas Comintern in the East, ensuring the security of the eastern borders from the USSR. The author comes to the conclusion that the Mongolian Revolution of 1921 became a large-scale event in its entire centuries-old history, led to colossal changes in the political, economic, social and cultural life of Mongolian society.

Abstract:Socio-economic reforms of the turn of the 20th century had their effect on the ethnic outskirts of the Russian state. In the Kalmyk nomadic societies of the Astrakhan and Stavropol gubernias and in Kalmyk stanitsas of the Province of the Don Cossack Host, there began a revival movement among Buddhist priests, reconnection to the Buddhist world. The article is to study the renewal process in the Kalmyk monk community drawing on travel notes of the said monks made on pilgrimage to Tibet and Mongolia. Discourse problematics come from the need to analyze the revival movement and the process of renewal of the ties to the Buddhist world. Travel notes of Kalmyk pilgrims are regarded as one of the aspects of the issue. Despite great interest of researchers to the history of Kalmyk Buddhism, the renewal movement remains outside the scientific field. Meanwhile, the revival movement and the process of renewing ties to the Buddhist world are extraordinarily important not only for study of the Kalmyk Buddhism history, but also for inclusion of imperial outskirts in all-Russian socio-economic reforms. The article draws on a manuscript titled “Journey through Mongolia of the head of all khuruls of the Bolshederbetovsky ulus bagshi Dorji Setenov,” which is kept in the fonds of the Russian Geographical Society. The diary written in Russian is an example of Kalmyk pilgrim travel notes of the turn of the 20th century. While the travel notes of D. Setenov and manuscripts of other Kalmyk pilgrims are known to researchers, this text has never been published. The artistic content of the notes has been assessed by literary scholars, but they remained unnoticed as a source on renewal movement in the Kalmyk Buddhism. Source analysis of the travel notes demonstrates authenticity their data on social status, religious life, and monastery education in Mongolia. Comprehensive analysis of the text and use of biographical methods permit to research it in relation to life and actions of its author. D. Setenov’s manuscript is a valuable personal provenance source reflecting the nature of renewing ties to the Buddhist world and uniqueness of the renewal movement among Kalmyk priesthood. The manuscript remains relevant and important to researchers studying the history of Buddhism in Russia and Mongolia.
Research Results of Mongolian Burial Sites in the Territory of Modern Mongolia

Abstract:Since the 1950s, medieval burial sites in Mongolia have been systematically excavated. Among them, tombs belonging to the period of the formation and further expansion of the Mongol Empire have been identified. This article presents an overview of the excavations of such graves that have been carried out. Mongolian and foreign specialists were involved in these activities. The archaeological teams of the Soviet-Mongolian Historical and Cultural Expedition led by A.P. Okladnikov made a major contribution. About 700 medieval burials at over 100 sites have been excavated in Mongolia to date. Not all the results, however, have been published to date. Three main types of burials have been identified: aristocratic graves, burial mounds of common nomads and rock burials. The presented historiographical review makes it possible to identify four stages in the study of medieval burial complexes in Mongolia. The available material provides an opportunity to carry out a large programme of modern, comprehensive research. The results will give substance to various aspects of life and activities of the nomads of Inner Asia during the developed Middle Ages. It will be important to compare such data with written and pictorial sources.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of and comments on a symposium concerning modern Chinese history held in Beijing, China in October 2009. It is composed of four parts: first, the paradigm issues of modern Chinese historical studies; second, indigenous reorientation and the study of regional social history; third, the relationship between social history and regional social history; fourth, the history of scholarship on the Chinese revolution. All the conference participants were prestigious scholars in the fields of modern Chinese history and Ming–Qing historical studies in Mainland China. The attending scholars provided in-depth and well considered views about the macro issues of this discipline. Furthermore, the discussion was very active and productive. This paper reflects the latest trends in the field of modern Chinese historical studies in Mainland China.

Abstract:The history of Erdeni-dzu, the first stationary Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, founded in 1585—1586, is considered, and attention is paid to its current state. The relevance of the study is due to insufficient knowledge of the history of individual monasteries that played an important role in the spread of Buddhism, which include Erdeni-dzu, which was a model for other Mongolian monasteries and had a cultural significance in the ethnic history of the people. The novelty of the study is seen in the conclusion that the first monks — Tibetan lamas, who belonged to the Sakyapa school, contributed to the Mongolian lamas in the study and development of the fullness and integrity of the Buddhist theological tradition. They supported the creation of the actual Mongolian monastic community — the sangha, which, until the closure, the Erdeni-dzu monastery was one of the religious, cultural and economic centers of Khalkha-Mongolia. It is reported that in the 30s of the XX century the monastery was closed, in 1944 it was taken under state protection, in 1947 it was transformed into a museum. According to field data obtained by the authors in 2022, it is one of the most actively visited tourist centers and continues to be one of the main factors in the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Mongolian people.

Abstract:In the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties,changes of social structure leads to shifts of academic thoughts from the sole study of Confucian classics to the gaming and interaction among Confucianism,Metaphysics,Taoism and Buddhism.In the process,in order to strengthen their noble lineage and consolidate their political and economic privileges scholar-bureaucrats paid much attention to the compilation of historical books.So do hedge-writers whose purpose is for the posthumous fame,hence the bloom in compiling historical books.The invasion of sixteen kingdoms of five ethnic groups broke the unified political authority into small pieces,thus creating a vacuum and promoting their cultural communication and integration.For the purpose of being orthodox and hiding arrogation,they also emphasized historical compilation.Historiography is also influenced by the spread of Buddhism.

Abstract:Documents from Turfan and Dunhuang shared similar fate in modern history of China. Comparing with Dunhuang documents which were reserved in a Buddhist library cave and scattered all around the world thereafter, Turfan documents, which were discovered sporadically in ruins of Buddhist sites or ancient tombs, are more various and constantly blessed with new discoveries. While Dunhuang studies encounter the challenge of topic consciousness because of shortage of new materials, Turfan studies still have wonders to discover as more documents are appearing. Foreign scholars had taken the first steps in Turfan studies, but Turfan studies in China began to develop since the 30s of last century. A hundred years of studies had made Turfan an international field of academic studies, absorbing vitality from other research fields both in China and abroad. We can expect new researches appearing in more aspects, such as regional history of Turfan area, relationships between China and the West, social history of medieval China, and many traditional topics will be examined with reference to new materials and from new perspectives.

However, compared with overseas researches on Angkor, researches in China are rather few, espe-cially the case studies on the sculpture arts of Angkor. Abstract:Historical novels of different periods reflect the real social demands of different periods. Since the foundation of the PRC, writers' creation concepts and concept of history have constantly changed along with the influence of all kinds of thoughts of the traditional and modern cultures from China and the West. The creation of historical novels in different periods of contemporary China appears a variety of different specific forms, such as the revolutionary historical novel, the new historical novel, the cultural historical novel, and different creative methods and aesthetics. This paper reviews and analyzes these kinds of historical novel forms, and we can see the creation development of contemporary novels under the influence of different cultures.

Abstract:In Mainland China,the studies on history of Republican China (1912-1949) has been developing very fast within recent three decades,and became a relative independent subject with enormous research achievement.During three decades,the leading historical theory of studying on history of Republican China transferred mainly from the Historical Concept of Revolution to the Historical Concept of Nationalism and the Historical Concept of Modernization.With new fields are carved out and new materials are used in research,the studies of history of Republican China are showing more multiple and colorful in 21th Century.For its brighter future,the Chinese scholars should do their best to re-draw a clear line of research object's demarcation,to re-construct theory system,and to wide their cooperates with academic world abroad.
