Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play two divergent roles as both deleterious and beneficial species depending on their concentration in plants. At high concentration they cause damage to biomolecules and trigger genetically programmed cell suicide events, whereas at low concentration it acts as second messenger in intracellular signaling cascades that mediate several responses in plant cells. At high levels, ROS are unwelcome harmful by‐products of normal cellular metabolism. It causes oxidative damage to lipid, protein, and DNA leading to altered intrinsic membrane properties like fluidity, ion transport, loss of enzyme activity, protein cross linking, inhibition of protein synthesis, DNA damage, ultimately resulting in cell death. In order to avoid the oxidative damage, higher plants possess an elaborate and highly redundant plant ROS network, composed of antioxidant enzymes and antioxidant molecules, is responsible for keeping ROS levels under control. On the other hand, spatial and temporal fluctuations of ROS levels are interpreted as signals required for numerous biological processes such as growth, development, tolerance to abiotic stress factors, proper response to pathogens and cell death. The molecular language associated with ROS‐mediated signal transduction, leading to modulation in gene expression, is one of the specific early stress responses in the acclamatory performance of the plant. ROS may act as “second messenger” modulating the activities of specific proteins or expression of genes by changing redox balance of the cell. The network of redox signals orchestrates metabolism for regulating energy production to utilization, interfering with primary signaling agents (hormones) to respond to changing environmental cues at every stage of plant development. Interaction with other signaling molecules determines the outcome or helps to fine‐tune the biological responses to altered ROS levels. Although many components of the ROS signaling network have recently been identified, the challenge remains to understand how ROS‐derived signals are integrated to eventually regulate such biological processes as plant growth, development, stress adaptation and programmed cell death.
