Abstract:There are some mistranslations and losses in the published version of the bamboo slips manuscript of the Zhouyi unearthed from the Han tomb at Fuyang,Anhui Province. This paper gives out some amendments,further translates some characters,and discriminates some remanent characters,which are referential to the studies of this version of the Zhouyi. In addition,the paper also points out some problems in the copy of the original manuscript.
Collating and Interpreting the Medical Bamboo Slips Excavated from the Han Tombs in Tianhui Town

Abstract:Abstract In July 2012 through August 2013, four earthen shaft pit tombs with timber chambers were excavated in a cemetery located in Tianhui Town, Jinniu District, Chengdu City. The tombs, which had been looted, were of similar size and aligned in the same south–north orientation. Tomb M3 contained 951 bamboo slips distributed across two compartments of its lower chambers: North II and South II . Most of the texts they contain are of medical interest, though twenty fragments appear to be from legal documents. Based on the content of the discovered slips, it has been suggested that the tomb’s occupant was a physician or medical official. Six of the M3–121 manuscripts found in North II concern medical theory, the causes and symptoms of disease, the nature of the channels of the body ( mai 脈 ), diagnosis, acupuncture, and possibly moxibustion therapy. The dates the texts were transcribed fall within the period when Empress Lü 呂后 (187–181 BCE ) was effectively in power and the reign of Emperor Wendi (r. 180–157 BCE ) of the Western Han dynasty. The M3–137 manuscripts found in South II include two texts entitled the Book of Treating Horses and the Book of the Classic Channels . The dates the texts were copied were earlier than those assigned to the M3–121 manuscripts.

[Exploring the changes of inheritance model of medical knowledge as viewed from the description of physicians in the Song Dynasty]

Abstract:From the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty, the models of "master and apprentice" and "physician of long family tradition for generations" were the main ways for teaching medical knowledge. With the rapid amassment of medical books in the Song Dynasty, "reading text" became increasingly important and prominent in the inheritance of medical knowledge, which could be seen clearly from the descriptions on physicians in the Song Dynasty. For instance, Hao Yun's medical knowledge was recorded as a model of "master and apprentice" in Hao Yun's Epitaph written by Zhang Xun. However, in Ye Mengde's description, this model was played down, while at the same time, "reading text" was emphasized. Pang Anshi, though coming from a physician family for generations, got rid of some medical knowledge from his own family and turned to the medical knowledge by "reading text". According to Pang Anshi's Epitaph written by Zhang Lei and Fang ji Zhuan (Biography of Technicians) in Song shi (The Song History), Pang Anshi was a typical model of becoming a famous physician by "reading text". In the Epitaph, Pang Anshi's brilliance was stressed, and in the latter, "reading text" was more important and the family tradition was denied. In the description of the Song Dynasty, Chen Zhaoyu's wonderful medical skills was coming from the "practice", and "reading text" was denied right away. What is more, "reading text" was introspected and criticized through Chen Zhaoyu's lip. The different descriptions of the Song Dynasty reflected the change of inheritance model of medical knowledge.

Abstract:The document on P.3315,Commentaries on Classic Shangshu(from Chapter YaoDian to Chapter ShunDian),was written by Sun Shi,and so it is called "Phonetics of Ancient Texts in Shangshu." The relationship between "New Text" and "Ancient Text" on P.3315 actually reflects their connection between traditional characters and popular characters,small-seal script calligraphy,and clerical calligraphy,as well as literal "New Text" and "Ancient Text." According to P.3315,we can infer the sources of "Ancient Text" in the version by Mei Ze.They are mainly derived from "Ancient Text" in the Stone Classics of the Zhengshi Reign and "Ancient Text" in Shuowen-jiezi.In addition,the "Ancient Text" in the version of Mei Ze obviously has another source,which often coincides with the Warring States text,and this part of "Ancient Text" is likely to be from the Hanshu(Book of Han),the annotations from Zheng Xuan and Han dynasty inscriptions,based on the Han Dynasty’s scholars’ understanding of "Ancient Text."

Abstract:Among the medical bamboo slips unearthed from Han tomb in Laoguanshan of Chengdu, the Zhu bing (All Diseases) is a monograph to discuss the characteristics of signs and symptoms. Based on the differences of writing styles, diseases involved, expounding methods and writing rules, the book is divided, by the research team, into 2 parts: All Diseases(1) and All Diseases(2). All Diseases(1) includes over 130 slips, 2 000 characters with totally more than 100 disease names, containing multiple clinical disciplines. The elaborated classification, varied naming methods, grasping the symptom characteristics guided by the four diagnostic approaches, paying attention to the comparison of similar diseases, and dealing with the prognosis and healthcare in this part reflect the holism of correspondence between human body and natural environment, and syndrome differentiation thought of combining disease with symptoms and signs, revealing its academic significance.

Abstract:Handwritten prescriptions are based on the thorough understanding of diseases and accurate diagnosis of patients by ancient Chinese physicians. This article discusses the particularities of TCM handwritten prescriptions in different historical periods in China, which are crucial to the study of contemporary medicine and calligraphy and the treatment of TCM diseases with their unique writing styles. We aim at study and summarize the evolution of ancient Chinese manuscripts from a historical perspective. As the only way to record the experience of disease diagnosis and treatment, in-depth research on handwritten prescriptions can open up new fields of scientific research in traditional Chinese medicine, promote the wide application and dissemination of ancient Chinese calligraphy works around the world, and provide more opportunities for future generations of medical references. This paper mainly adopts the survey method, literature review method, data analysis method, comparative analysis method and inductive summary method to conduct research, and strive to make the research convincing. Traditional Chinese medicine formulas are the empirical data of generations of doctors in meticulous diagnosis, investigation, prescription, dialectical treatment, and are a precious medical case. TCM has a long history in China, and it is an important foundation for TCM to treat diseases because of its good medicinal calligraphy styles. In-depth research has the potential to open up new areas of scientific research in Chinese medicine and encourage the widespread adaptation and dissemination of ancient Chinese calligraphy works worldwide. Its widespread use increases the number of references available for future medicine.
[An Interpretation of the bamboo slips of acupuncture prescriptions excavated from the Han Dynasty Tomb at Laoguanshan]

Abstract:The bamboo slips of acupuncture prescriptions unearthed from the Han Dynasty Tomb at Laoguanshan include both theoretical elaborations and formulae. Specifications for diagnosis and treatment, standards for needles and a variety of acupuncture techniques are discussed. The 40 acupuncture prescriptions recorded are based on presupposed summaries of theory and experience, rather than empirical formulae. Among them, 28 have needling sites that are maishu (vessel points), with proper names and specific locations. The names of these maishu adopt the pattern of 'the name of the site + the name of one of the three yin and three yang meridians'. Needling numbers are indicated for the majority of the sites of acupuncture stimulation, no matter whether for maishu or for sites at pathological areas. These statements fully embody the distinct characteristics of Bianque acupuncture.

Abstract:This article examines the attitudes of Warring States textual witnesses to the increase in presence of and reliance on bamboo manuscripts in communicating knowledge. Based on a rereading of transmitted materials and four manuscript texts (*Wuwang Jianzuo A and B, *Baoxun, and the Zhou Wuwang you ji) from the Warring States period, I analyze how contemporaries dealt with questions about the status of (manuscript) texts, their use and transmission, their trustworthiness, and their ability to preserve knowledge. These are texts that talk about themselves. They remark upon the physicality of text and the act of writing, the problem of oral and written transmission, and the differences in the ability of memory and manuscripts to store, hide, and reveal knowledge. I argue that these different reflections reveal a change in the predominant medium of communicating knowledge towards an increased reliance on bamboo manuscripts gradually and partially replacing traditional knowledge practices.

Abstract:The compilation of medical bamboo slips, which are excavated from a Han dynasty tomb in Laoguanshan(Mount. Laoguan), has two manuscripts: 'Zhu Bing Ⅰ(cases study Ⅰ)'and 'Zhu Bing Ⅱ(cases study Ⅱ)'. 'Zhu Bing Ⅰ'mainly discussed the pathogenic factor "wind" and "wind diseases" . It also analyzed the features of pathogenic factor "wind" . It classified the "wind diseases" into 17 kinds from 4 point views, and documented the symptoms of 17 kinds of "wind disease" . It was first time that its most ideas were documented in traditional Chinese medicine literatures.

Abstract:Abstract The text discussed in this paper is part of the collection of bamboo slip medical manuscripts excavated from the Laoguanshan Han tomb outside of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, in 2012. We have given it the title Piercing Methods based on its contents. This text provides invaluable new material for understanding the historical development of Chinese medicine and acupuncture over the course of the Han dynasty (202 BCE –220 CE ). We combine analyses of excavated manuscripts, received texts, and excavated artifacts to reconstruct the piercing methods from the early Han presented in this text. Three primary sets of techniques and associated piercing tools have been identified: mai piercing, division piercing, and piercing water (swelling), although only the first technique that concerns treating the mai is dealt with comprehensively in this article.

Abstract:The compilation of "Manchu Anatomy" was based on the positive attitude of Emperor Kangxi towards science and technology, the activities of Jesuits in China, and the exchange of science and culture between China and the West. It integrates the visceral theory of traditional Chinese medicine and the anatomical knowledge of Western medicine, promoting mutual understanding and reference between the two medical systems. The completion of this book not only increased the popularity of Western medicine in China, but also promoted the development of courtly medical education. The Complete Record of "Manchu Anatomy" has become an important bridge for the exchange of science and culture between China and the West, and has enlightening significance for the study of scientific and cultural literacy and interdisciplinary thinking. At the same time, it also demonstrates the openness and inclusiveness of technology and culture in the early Qing Dynasty. However, the closure and conservatism of the Qing Dynasty also had a limiting effect on the widespread dissemination of this work, resulting in the academic theory of Western medicine not being widely applied in China during the early Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:In the domain of anatomy, some Chinese characters in anatomical terms possess distinctive morphological significance. Chinese characters evolved from pictographic characters, with some of these pictographs being created by ancient people based on their own body structure. This implies that the comprehension and depiction of the human body structure have been integral since the inception of Chinese characters, and this knowledge has been passed down and developed through the continued inheritance of Chinese characters. Even today, certain characters retain the appearance to reflect the shape of the human body structure. By examining the characters related to vertebrae, cranial fontanel and heart, we can find the unique and enduring link between Chinese characters and the fields of anatomy as well as Chinese traditional medicine.

Abstract:It has always been considered that Zhenjiu Dacheng (Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) printed by ZHAO Wenbing is the earliest version. In comparative study, it is found that there are two versions in the Ming dynasty, one is the original, stored in the Library of China Academy of Sciences and another one is the revision, stored in the Library of Tianjin University of TCM, Zhejiang Provincial Library and the Library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The last item, Chengjiang (CV 24) in the Acupoint Indication of Conception Vessel in volume 7 is included in the revised edition, but not covered in the original one, which is the difference between the two versions. Both of the versions were in the Ming dynasty, rather than the block-printed one in the Qing dynasty.

Abstract:In Gao Ruone's epitaph written by Wen Yanbo, it was mentioned that Gao studied medicine because of his mother's diseases, reflecting his filial piety as a Confucianist. It was recorded that "more Yun people engaged in medical profession, especially proficient at treating cold damage diseases, and all followed Gao's theory" in Ye Mengde's Bi shu lu hua (Notes Taken When Spending The Summer Days) . In Gao Ruone's Biographyof History of Song Dynasty, the sentence was deduced as "famous doctors mostly coming from Weizhou, and all following Gao's theory" . Meanwhile, Gao Ruone was considered by Huang Tingjian as an important partin the transmission of medical knowledge after Huangdi, Qi Bo and Zhang Zhongjing. The reason was that Gao Ruone did revise and check Zhongjing's Shang han lun jue (Rhymes of Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) , Sun Simiao's Fang shu (Prescriptions) and Wai tai mi yao (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library) to make them circulate, and known to the Song people. The changes in the descriptions of Gao Ruone illustrated the recognition by the Song people on the important role of medical text reading in the transmission of medical knowledge.

Abstract:The material features of the Shanghai Museum *Yong yue and Zhangjiashan Yinshu manuscripts structure their texts in ways different from each other, inviting questions on production methods and the influence of form on the reception of content. I provide an overview of developments in manuscript formatting, noting a gradual development towards increased visual formatting in manuscripts over time. The article examines what the use of codicological features such as manuscript materiality, layout, and punctuation reveal about manuscript production and how these translate to the reception and understanding of text. It analyzes how such features in the two manuscripts contribute to a sense of textual unity, order their respective contents, and facilitate different modes of reading such as vocalization, memorization, browsing, and linear reading. I propose that developments in manuscript formatting increasingly facilitated visually clearer, context-independent, and text-centered modes of reading, allowing for a dynamic involvement of readers

Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed the excavation of a large quantity of bamboo and silk documents in relation to pre-Qin thoughts and society.Accordingly,steady progress has also been made in this regard.As earlier discussions focused on character,gloss and text annotations,we deem it ripe time to avail of the present research to enrich the writing of intellectual history,and to reveal the theoretical meaning underlying the materials.For this purpose,we have invited a few scholars to examine the pre-Qin intellectual world as reflected in bamboo and silk documents either from the macro view of text-thought interactions,the micro view of theoretical construction,schools of thought and their evolution pertaining to a particular kind of classics,or from the methodological view.Professor Ding Sixin from the School of Philosophy at Wuhan University asserts that we can gain a glimpse of the evolution of earlier "texts" and their interaction with "thoughts" from the bamboo and silk versions of Lao Tzu:The Eternal Tao Te Ching and I Ching(The Book of Changes) excavated over the past 40 decades,as well as the evolution and characteristics of these two kinds of text from the Pre-Qin period through to the late Western Han dynasty.Lao Tzu has undergone far more substantial textual changes than I Ching,which has retained relative consistency and stability in the course of textual transcription.We should strengthen the understanding of their textual character and reflect on our academic ideas and achievements.Professor Wang Bo from the Department of Philosophy at Peking University believes that there existed some specific documents interpreting The Book of Odes,such as Wu Xing(Five Elements),Confucian Poetics and Parents of the People during the Warring States period.These documents not only quoted and interpreted the characters and content in relation to The Book of Odes,but also developed the topic of mind,nature and feelings based on the characteristic of "poetry as a means of expressing one's thought and feelings," affirming and stressing the inseparability of mind/nature and rites.The proposition of the study of mind is a necessary result of Confucian meditations on the reestablishment of rites and order.Professor Cao Feng from the Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University ascertains two theoretical clues running through the silk document of The Yellow Emperor's Four Canons excavated from Mawangdui:the "Lao Tzu-style discussions on Tao and politics" and the "emperor-style discussions on Tao and politics." Although such a model cannot be readily used to analyze the still earlier bamboo works on the thought of Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu,such as The Great One Gives Birth to Water,Heng Xian,Three Moralities and Fanwu Liuxing(When the Forms of All Things Become Animate),there exist close relations between later literature and the two types of discussions on Tao and politics,indicating a possibility of further evolvement.Professor Liang Tao from the School of Chinese Classics at Renmin University of China notes that the application of dual attestation to recent research on excavated documents has far exceeded that in Wang Guowei's period.It is used both for an explanation and attestation of ancient history and for a suspicion and discrimination of ancient history.And the diachronic study of unearthed materials and printed materials is more similar to Ku Chieh-kang's "only pursuing its changes." Therefore,the "prototype-meaning evolution theory" not only admits that historical records have their "origins" or "prototypes," but also recognizes the distortions and twists arising from the inheritance,while trying to offer a possible explanation for such evolution.
