Abstract:The article analyzes the essays by students at the Moscow State Linguistic University about Mikhail Shemyakin’s exhibit in Dostoevsky’s House-Museum in Moscow, presenting a series of graphic illustrations to the novel Crime and Punishment. The exhibit, titled “Raskolnikov’s Delusions,” reflects the dreamlike content of the novel. The aesthetic reactions of contemporary students are considered here as a significant example of receptive polyphony. In their feedbacks, the students draw connections between the artist’s visual interpretations and their prior encounters with Crime and Punishment during their school studies, admitting that the exhibition revealed the text from a new, unexpected side, which confirms the idea that the perception of a classic work deepens thanks to its figurative visualization. Immersed in the inner world of the novel Crime and Punishment, the students paid attention to key paintings such as the first and last illustrations, framing the entire exhibition. Here Shemyakin conveyed the main idea of Dostoevsky’s text on resurrection, which was emphasized in many reviews. The association of non-verbal and literary texts undoubtedly affected the attention to the details. For example, the symbolic light emanating from the pages of the Gospel in the hands of Sonya Marmeladova, along with the figure of Lazarus, was noted as important. A careful contemplation of Shemyakin’s illustrations led the students to a deeper understanding of the meaning of Dostoevsky’s novel. Their essays testify that, despite the difference in opinions and assessments, the attitude of modern youth towards Dostoevsky’s work, refracted in the art of Shemyakin, generally corresponds to the spectrum of adequate readings of the novel Crime and Punishment in the 21st century.

Abstract:The article examines the semantics and function of the photographic portrait of Nastasya Filippovna in the novel “The Idiot” by F.M. Dostoevsky’s; the symbolic nature and role of photography in the polyphonic world of the novel are determined. In the middle of the 19th century, this type of visual art was in the zone of increased attention and controversy; the reason for this was the possibility of replicating photographs and, accordingly, their non-unique nature. The purpose of the article is to understand how F.M. Dostoevsky responded to discussion about photography; to determine what meanings he put into this aesthetic sign, what function photography performs in the literary world of “The Idiot”. The research methodology is based on semiotic, historical, cultural and narrative approaches: photography is viewed as a semiotic element (a sign with semantics); as an element of a narrative constructions about the image of Nastasya Filippovna. The historical and cultural context makes it possible to clarify the attitude of contemporaries and F.M. Dostoevsky to the phenomenon of photography. In the course of the study, it was established that photography is a significant element of the artistic image of Nastasya Filippovna; important character traits of the heroine are revealed due to a photographic portrait: pride, the desire for personal significance, a sense of taste. Sharing the opinion of his contemporaries about the impermeability of a person's inner appearance to the camera, Dostoevsky makes photography a structural principle of the female image: a photographic portrait demonstrates the heroine’s external beauty, but hides her inner appearance. In the literary world of the polyphonic novel, photography forms the mystery of the Nastasya Filippovna’s image, its dialectical complexity and contradictoriness.
REINTERPRETATION OF IMAGES FROM DOSTOEVSKY’S NOVEL CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN RUSSIAN ROCK POETRY

Abstract:Russian rock poets focus on Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment and its characters: the old woman pawnbroker, Svidrigailov and Raskolnikov. The hero of rock poetry lives in the initially given anti-space, where the state is a well-organized structure that exists due to the suppression of personality. The classic interpretation of the novel’s idea - the fall and subsequent resurrection of the human soul - is impossible for the rock poet, who is painfully focused on the root cause of social injustice, symbolically embodied in the ‘eternal’ image of the old woman pawnbroker. The emphasized motive of her immortality makes the conflict of personality and the existing system tragically insoluble. The ‘self’ of the lyrical hero coincides with the consciousness of Raskolnikov. The main character of the novel turns out to be only ‘one of many’, any of those who decide to challenge the system - and lose. The moral meaning of the novel is reinterpreted: it only maintains the existing order, showing the impossibility of struggle, because the crime turns against the rebel himself, who is not able to withstand the torment of conscience. There is a redistribution of the ‘weight’ between the characters. The heightened experience of the meaningless struggle with the existing world order and social injustice pushes rock poets to Dostoevsky’s anti-heroes, in particular to Svidrigailov, who becomes an independent tragic figure. He, like everyone, is sinful, in his extreme cynicism he is even deprived of the opportunity to deceive himself - and the last thing remaining for him is bitter irony of himself, life and even the existential problem of human afterlife. At the same time, Sonya Marmeladova - the moral antipode of Raskolnikov - is mentioned in the texts only once, since she is not included in the conflict of personality and society, but acts as its victim, like Raskolnikov himself (therefore, this place in the system of characters is already occupied by a hero, whose nature is identical to that of the rock poet, more expressive, and similar to the demonic images of gloomy, gothic romanticism).

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of the poetics of F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel “The Brothers Karamazov”. This problematic area, despite active research attention, still contains a huge potential for further discoveries. The author focuses attention on the actual problem of subject-material representation of artistic space. This work aims is to study book topics, to identify a system of relationships between stable images and motives, which are represented in the text as the lexeme “book” and its derivatives. Based on predecessors’ studies (A. P. Vlaskin, G. Ya. Galagan, L. V. Karasev, N. A. Makaricheva), the author puts forward and defines the idea of the functioning of the “ontological scheme” of the plot, which is formed by the subject-symbol “book”. Despite the relative paucity of plot situations with the point of presence of the book, a wide branching of the scheme is revealed, because of the principle of duality inherent in Dostoevsky’s poetics as well. In conclusion, the author argues about the significance of this “ontological scheme” for understanding the idea of the novel in connection with the breadth of the semantics contained in it: knowledge, memory, enlightenment, change, “second birth”. The article consists of four parts, which examine in detail the functioning of the book topic in different plot fragments: in the preface “From the Author”, in the narrator’s reports about the biography of Smerdyakov and Krasotkin, in the third meeting of Ivan Karamazov with Smerdyakov. The author uses the structural-semiotic method of studying the text with elements of mythopoetic and ontological approaches.

Abstract:The leading trends in the world literary process are summarized in the article based on the analysis of modern Kazakh, Belarusian and Finnish literature, which are characterized by new approaches to the interpretation of reality, reflecting the postmodern world view. Prose writers and poets build complex spatio-temporal relationships in literary texts, when pictures of the past replace the present, complementing and concretizing what has already happened. The transformation of the structure of the work of art, the chain of incredible coincidences and repetitions, the lyrical-autobiographical nature of the narrative, the metaphorical style, mythological imagery make it possible to fancifully interweave pictures of reality and fiction. The authors continue the experiment with the language and text, graphic design in different fonts, the inclusion of SMS messages, visuals, editing and clip series of images. A characteristic feature of the works is autobiography. The theme of family, childhood and gender policy is becoming a leading topic in modern Finnish and Belarusian literature. The literary text comes closer to the media text. Belarusian, Kazakh and Finnish literature are active participants in the world literary process. A postmodern vision of the world opens up new possibilities for creating characters of heroes and entering into dialogue thanks to new literary translations.
Raskolnikov on the Way to ‘Holy Russia’: Hermeneutics of Raskolnikov’s Image in F. M. Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment

Abstract:The image of Raskolnikov in F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment has been widely researched and commented upon. However, suggesting a particular approach to the material — that of hermeneutic linguistics — and focusing on the problem of holiness (two essential principles of this article) provide new results in understanding the content of Raskolnikov’s image, the direction of its development, and the inner plot of the novel’s epilogue. The paper focuses on defining markers of the idea of ‘Holy Russia’ in the image of Rodion Raskolnikov as well as the role of ‘holy’ symbols both in its own development, and, through it, in the novel’s overall plot. Particular attention is paid to intertextual connections of the novel with the New Testament and established prayers, as well as to temporal and topic religious symbols referring to the hero. The paper argues that both the ideals of ‘Holy Russia’ and Dostoevsky’s ‘Russian idea’ play a significant role in the development of the plot and the hero’s character. It also analyzes the connection of the hero’s inner journey (his spiritual and moral fall and his later rebirth) with embodying the ‘Russian idea’ in the image of an intellectual in the novel. The hermeneutic research demonstrates that Dostoevsky, bringing his hero through the abyss of ‘theoretical’ temptation, inner schism, and jail, discovers in him those powers that can become sources of transformation for his soul and his life, putting him on the way to holiness. The image of Raskolnikov appears to be charged with meanings connected with the ideals of ‘Holy Russia’ both in terms of individual transformation (the way to holiness) and in terms of social unity (the way to self-sacrificial service, mutual Christian love, and the common good).
Actualization of the Epilogue of the Novel Crime and Punishment in Cinematic Transformations

Abstract:The article deals with the transformations of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, with an emphasis on the actualization of the epilogue of the novel in the cinema, from the beginning of the 20th to the beginning of the 21st century. The research focuses on films that are of significant importance for the ‘spirit of the time’ of their era, and, at the same time, that most actively participated in the creation of the cultural phenomenon of Raskolnikov’s transmedial metatext. The analysis reveals the dialogism of film authors in reference to the epilogue, which, in the researcher’s opinion, contains the ‘original message’ of the novel. Several variants of screen interpretations of the epilogue of Crime and Punishment are here analyzed. A first option is when the author develops Dostoevsky’s ideas, so the hero abandons the idea of ‘having right’ and ‘permissiveness’ and evolutes to a new worldview (Raskolnikov by Robert Wiene, Crime and Punishment by Joseph von Stenberg and Georges Lampen, Pickpocket by Robert Bresson). A second option is when the hero remains fixed on his idea and the correctness of his own convictions, however he goes to surrender (Crime and Punishment by Lev Kulidzhanov and Aki Kaurismyaki). A third option means that the hero insists on his ideological platform, but the authorities punish him (Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless). A fourth option is when the hero does not surrender to the police, does not confess the crime, and continues to live in his usual way (Silent Pages by Alexander Sokurov and Match Point by Woody Allen). A fifth option means that the hero does not hide from the law and continues to be a part of the existing social system (Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese, Nina by Heitor Dhalia).

Crime and Punishment: Choreography of Text and Text of Choreography

Abstract:Here is analyzed Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment not as being translated into choreography, but from the point of view of Dostoevsky’s own “choreography” of visualized metaphors of movements, constituting the encoded text of the novel. In the article “choreography of text” means verbal description of various motions, gestures, and positions, whereas “text of choreography” means the way one could interpret their message. In other words, it means the reading of presented visible actions as another unwritten though indirectly expressed text. Dostoevsky often refers to visuality and instead of words he describes silent movements. These movements are symbolic, and they silently speak of inner experiences, emotions, and thoughts, presented in a form of clearly visible events of the external world. A “sketch” to Crime and Punishment from the point of the “choreography of text” in the context of Raskolnikov’s doubleness is The Double, in which the whole fifth chapter is a recording of a complex, dynamic “dance” of bifurcation. Like the story, the novel concerns the inner life of the main character, the difficult path of one Raskolnikov to the other. This metaphysical path is shown as physically existing, and contradictory movements of the hero’s soul gain visibility while going through it. It seems the writer truly possesses not only the art of the words but also the one of choreography and can speak about the most essential things using body language. Sometimes the culmination points of the leading message of the novel are expressed in short but deeply symbolic words, and at times they are rather shown than spoken. Considering that the actual meanings of the text are not lying on the surface, but are concealed behind symbolic words and movements, these details require close attention and a thorough analyses which the essay is dedicated to.

Abstract:The article analyzes the expressing-depicting means of verbalization of the mission «City» in the same name V. Pidmohylnyi’s novel, based on the logical-semantic opposition «City» – «Village». It is noted that the study of the verbalized constants of the specified contrast is an important issue for integrative linguistic history, which interacts with such scientific industries as linguistic culture, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, communicative linguistics etc. The concept of a character discourse is actualized: the most important sign of the novel «The city» V. Pidmohylnyi’s combination of the language of the author and the language of the main character of the work – Stepan Radchenko. It is proved that the discursive zone of the character is the most influential in the formation of the analyzed mental image. The semantic-stylistic features of the «City» are traced, which concentrates artistic narrative of a proactive piece and appears a dominant component of the cognitive-field structure of the relevant concept. Its lexical-thematic and semantic and associative lines, which provide content to the сonnectivity and integrity of the mental image in the vertical context of the novel: «City» ↔ «Village», «City» ↔ «Nature», «Closed space» ↔ «Open Space», «City» → «Art» → «Literature», «City» ← «Love» → «Nature» etc. The conclusion is emphasized that V. Pidmohylnyi one of the first Ukrainian writers of the beginning of the twentieth century. Conceptualized the city as a decisive factor in civilization-historical development of society, «immersing» a person from the village to urbanized space – anthropogenic landscape, «second nature».
THE IMAGE OF RUS’ TROIKA IN RUSSIAN LITERATURE OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract:The article examines the philosophical and cultural meaning of the symbol of Russian troika in the Dead Souls of N.V. Gogol as the Russian logos. The phenomenon of the ‘vast’ Russian space turns out to be metaphysically mysterious and axiologically ambivalent. In Gogol’s metaphysics, death is thought of as stillness, immobility (“They don’t move. Death strikes the unmoving world”), and life is like movement. Vast expanses open up an endless possibility of movement, moreover, they generate it. Therefore, the road ‘saves’ [Gogol 1951: 222], and fast riding on a troika, rooted in Russian nature, becomes a symbol of the life of the soul, resurrection and renewal. The article examines several works where the troika is understood as the archetype of Russia. This is the poem Fields by A.N. Maikov, where a frenzied ride on a troika symbolizes the aspiration of the Russian people to enter a new unexplored future after the abolition of serfdom. On the contrary, in N.A. Dobrolyubov’s poem In the Prussian Carriage, behind the ironic opposition of the Russian ‘living’ troika to the ‘dead machine’ of the West, one reads the criticism of Gogol’s historiosophical concept of inexhaustible ‘liveliness’ of Russia, embodied in the free movement of the troika. Although Dostoevsky is outraged by a caricature of the image of Russia-troika presented by the prosecutor in The Brothers Karamazov, he agrees that the structure depicted is true to life. Metaphysically, the phenomenon of ‘karamazovschina’ understood as Russian nature with its width, passionate desire to transgress all boundaries in everything, is based on Gogol’s symbol, whereas Russian love of fast ride, also noted by Gogol, in Dostoevsky’s novel turns out to be a desire for violent flight and come-downs of his characters. The article aims to show how consistent Dostoevsky was in his reproduction of the Russian metaphysics in Gogol’s sense, giving it a fatal, catastrophic character, yet retaining its positive sense and salvatory intention.

Abstract:The article deals with the role of spatial images in the writer’s consciousness of modern authors, about the peculiar subjective topography of their creative worlds. In the space of consciousness, there is a series of transformations of the realities of the outside world into the multidimensional experience of the writer’s own soul. The books included in the reader’s repertoire of our contemporary are considered – “The Conspiracy” by D. Granin, “The Key. The Last Moscow” by N. Gromova, “Chagin” by E. Vodolazkin, “The Stained Biography” by O. Trifonova, “The Inhabitants of the Funny Cemetery” by A. Ivanov, “The Argentine. Prodigal Son of Russia” by E. Baryakina, “Text as text” by A. Bitov. Each of these authors tries to bring into the system a set of disparate impressions and observations – historiosophical, socio-cultural, aesthetic, everyday. All that it gives grounds to conclude that today the main character of the art of words is not just a person as a third-party object of literary display, but a person, first of all, as a subject of consciousness in all the complexity of emotions experienced, unexpected meanings arising and changing assessments.
Crime and Punishment: How to Create a Deep Text

Abstract:Through microanalysis, the article shows the instruments used by Dostoevsky to create a text of great depth in his novel Crime and Punishment. An excerpt of Marmeladov’s speech on how he got his last job is analyzed, recurring to other episodes of the novel where the author works with biblical quotations or significant names in a similar way (for example, is shown the shift of meaning in the name Afrosinyushka). It is shown how in Crime and Punishment micro quotes from a “denunciatory” biblical text do not always concur to discredit the character the words refer to or the person who pronounces them. It is demonstrated how Dostoevsky when theologizing in literary works uses micro references to Scriptures in a complex way: not as a secret way to propose to the reader his judgment, but to explain to the reader his role towards the world and people around him (i.e., not morally, but ontologically).

Abstract:Ivan Karamazov's nightmare reflects his deep ideological crisis. In the story of Ivan Karamazov's "rebellion" against God, his arguments about recently discovered non-Euclidean geometries play a major role. Confessing that he cannot understand and accept the idea of non-Euclidean geometry and the idea of worlds arranged according to different laws than our world, Ivan therefore denies the possibility for himself to sincerely believe in God. The strange connection between non-Euclidean geometry and belief in God is confirmed by an episode in The Brothers Karamazov, in which Ivan has a vision of the devil. In describing paradise, the devil uses the latest scientific concepts and non-Euclidean geometry, clearly demonstrating that new scientific theories can help a person find faith. This connection, important for the story of Ivan Karamazov, can be explained by the fact that in Dostoevsky's philosophical worldview the existence of "other worlds" plays a very important role as an expression of an unusual interpretation of the idea of immortality. If we accept the idea of people's existence after death in "other worlds", then scientific theories about "other worlds" can be seen as revealing those dimensions of being, where man will visibly understand the existence of God and the possibility of immortality.
THE IMAGE OF A SINNER IN DRAMA «THUNDERSTORM» OF A.N. OSTROVSKY

Abstract:The article studies the image of sinners based on the drama «Thunderstorm» written by A.N. Ostrovsky. This issue is related to the prototype theory, which is based on the image, motivation and plot of the work with similar characteristics to the mythological component.In this way, it can be concluded that the creativity of literature comes from mythology. In this regard, the concept of «eternal image» appeared in literary criticism, which has a certain value to world literature. An important motive of classical literature is depravity. However, this motive is away to shape the image of a sinner.This image exists in different versions of Russian literature:that is, the heroine engaged in prostitution, the «tempted and abandoned» and unfaithful wife, the «camellia»(ladies of the demimonde, kept women) and others.The motives and plots of the hypostases of the image of the sinner are reduced to a certain archetypal semantic core, which is characteristic of Russian literature. The sinner refers to the sufferer in Russian literature; the path is from sin to rebirth, and the events will develop in the following order: «fall-repentance- suffering-redemption-salvation». This paradigm is obviously based on the Christian understanding of sin, mainly referring to the biblical story of the Savior and the repentant prostitute, and is related to the theological triad «sin-repentance- salvation». The analysis of the image of the sinner Katerina in the drama «Drama» by A.N. Ostrovsky is based on a single semantic archetypal core. And this type of unfaithful wife is depicted through a moral and religious understanding of sin, directly related to the concepts of guilt and shame, as well as a philosophical approach to the concept of this category, revealed in the image of the «holy harlot» through the realization of the concept of repentance and forgiveness.

Достоевский в романе «Преступление и наказание» ориентируются на искаженную парадигму человека- выбирают героем убийцу, сумасшедшего, чтобы с точностью показать изменение его душевных переживаний. Несмотря на схожесть двух художественных текстов, отмечается отличие. Русский писатель обращается к психологизму, чтобы довести Раскольникова до мук совести, привести его к нравственному очищению через страдание. Антропологические предпосылки русского писателя опираются на образ интеллигибельного человека, моральной личности, находящейся под присмотром совести. Американского писателя же интересует подробное описание ухудшенного духовного состояния героя. The article is devoted to the consideration of the method of psychologism in the works of the American short story writer E. Poe and the Russian writer F. M. Dostoevsky. The work notes the worldwide interest in psychology in the literature of the 19th – 20th centuries. E. Poe is an innovator in the field of psychological short stories; his creative legacy influenced the poetics of many writers, in particular F.M. Dostoevsky. The relevance of the work lies in considering the features of psychologism in the works of Russian and American writers using the example of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky “Crime and Punishment” and short stories by E.A. By "The TellTale Heart". Both writers turn to the inner world of the character and focus on exploring the human soul. E. Poe in the story “The Tell-Tale Heart” and F.M. Dostoevsky in the novel “Crime and Punishment” focuses on the distorted paradigm of man; they choose a murderer or a madman as the hero in order to accurately show the change in his mental experiences. Despite the similarity of the two literary texts, there is a difference. The Russian writer turns to psychologism in order to bring Raskolnikov to the pangs of conscience, to lead him to moral purification through suffering. The anthropological premises of the Russian writer are based on the image of an intelligent person, a moral person under the supervision of conscience. The American writer is interested in a detailed description of the hero’s deteriorated spiritual state.

Abstract:The summary is dedicated to the 25th International Readings “Dostoevsky’s Works in the Perception of 21st-Century Readers,” which took place on April 19–21, 2023, in Staraya Russa, Novgorod region. The conference was organized by the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Commission for the Study of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Artistic Heritage at the Academic Council “History of World Culture” of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was attended by more than 40 researchers from four countries: Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Japan. The novel Crime and Punishment was the main text that formed the basis of most of the reports, roundtable discussion, and seminar.
“Napoleonic” Petersburg and its Reflection in Dostoevsky’s Novel Crime and Punishment

Abstract:The article is devoted to a specific socio-cultural phenomenon, called by the author “Napoleonic” Petersburg, and its reflection in Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment (1866). In the late 1830s — 1860s the Napoleonic myth manifested itself in several aspects of the cultural life of the capital of the Russian Empire: the names of public institutions, restaurant menus, apartment decorations, museum rarities, monuments, street shows, theatrical productions, literary works, psychological imitation of Napoleon, etc. The article presents an attempt to reconstruct how the “Napoleonic” Petersburg was formed and looked like during the time when Fyodor Dostoevsky, who dedicated several works to the life of people in Petersburg, fascinated by Napoleon (“Mr. Prokharchin,” White Nights, Notes from the Underground, etc.), lived and worked in it, before the creation of Crime and Punishment. The author’s research focuses on the novel Crime and Punishment and Rodion Raskolnikov, trying to become a new Napoleon and talking about the transformation of St. Petersburg and the greatness of historical figures as “living monuments” on which there is “not a body, but bronze.” It is shown how the realities of St. Petersburg (the Egyptian Bridge, the Alexander Column, the Kazan Cathedral, etc.) relate to the Napoleonic myth and are indirectly reflected in the text of Dostoevsky’s novel.

Abstract:The aim of the study is to prove the high degree of influence of Russian classical literature on contemporary prose of the writers in the Arab East today, which has emerged as a result of the growing interest in the Russian classical literature in Arab countries in the past. The article analyzes the novel “Cold White Sun” by the Jordanian writer Kafa Al-Zou’bi, which was shortlisted for the Arab Booker Prize in 2019. The conceptual content of the novel is examined, including its themes (the individual’s loneliness in the world, the predestination of fate, atheism, the redemption of crime, etc.), as well as the artistic techniques of the realization of the author’s idea (imagery, reference to the author in the text, the significance of the natural background, etc.) and the aesthetics of language (choice of lexical units, semantic fields, etc.). The scientific novelty of the work is determined by turning to the little-studied material of the latest Arabic literature in domestic literary studies that represents the postmodernist trend of the 21st century, and attempts to establish its close connection with Russian classical literature. The research results indicate parallels in motifs (youthful maximalism, victimology, etc.) and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s imagery (the atmosphere of Petersburg, the room-as-coffin, etc.) discovered in the book by the Jordanian writer.
