Abstract:PURPOSE: To establish an image-guided treatment planning system used for oral and cranio-maxillofacial implantology. METHODS: We developed acranio-maxillofacial skeleton 3-D visualization computer model based on CT imaging data by a series of methods. Then, the data was programmed in Microsoft Visual C++6.0 and the Visualization ToolKit and the pre-operative planning module was developed. It allowed for repeated virtual surgical simulation and planning including resection planning, bone grafting, implant insertion and measurement of the bone landmarks. RESULTS: The 3-D visualization computer model and the 3-D implant planning module for cranio-maxillofacial defect implant reconstruction were successfully established. The model could present almost every anatomical and pathological structure with high quality allowing for view from various angles, which turned out to be valuable for the precision of diagnosis. Based on the visualization of the preoperative CT data of the patient's maxilla and mandible, the position and orientation of each implant, as well as the size and type of the implant, direction of the abutment could be clinically planned via the 3-D surgical planning module. CONCLUSIONS: With the support of this 3-D implant planning module for cranio-maxillofacial defect reconstruction, virtual surgical simulation and presurgical implant planning can be realized. At the same time, it provides a substantial basis for further improvement of clinical guide of the implant insertion using CT data.
